Kate Leth is a Canadian author and illustrator working in comics, animation, design, and feelings. A grown-up goth and pop culture devotee, Kate specializes in work for kids and teens. Their comics work includes Patsy Walker, A.K.A. Hellcat!; Girl Over Paris; Spell on Wheels; and Adventure Time, among others.

They live in Halifax, Nova Scotia with an absolutely ridiculous cat and several regrets. They are queer and genderfluid/non-binary, a fact that greatly influences their work. Kate uses they/them pronouns, but probably won’t correct you.

I was excited to finally see a 2nd Spell on Wheels story. Unfortunately, this wasn't as strong as the first volume. The story is lacking. There's lots of meaningless filler that should have been used for character growth instead. The girls are travelling across the country in search of a witch that Claire and Jolene have some kind of connection too. It all feels very rushed as they don't actually meet Annabelle until the last issue.

Received a review copy from Dark Horse and Edelweiss. All thoughts are my own and in no way influenced by the aforementioned.

This second volume was definitely better than the first one. The storyline was interesting and fun, I was curious to see what was about to go down with Annabelle, a witch who's causing quite a lot of problems, especially to Claire, who keeps having visions about her. Also, I really enjoyed how the friendship of the girls got better in this volume, I feel like they are a true coven now.
This is a nice witchy read and if you're looking for something like that, then I totally recommend this book!

This series commits to the "wheels" in the title by continuing the road trip down the East Coast in the first volume with a cross-country jaunt along I-10 through the American South. As with the first volume, the detours in the middle in Mobile, New Orleans, and Phoenix are more interesting than the final meet-up with a new witch in California.

While the witchy trio do some nice bickering and bonding along the way, the ride seemed a little bumpier with underdeveloped elements and herky-jerky progress. This feels like the middle leg of a longer journey, and I'm hoping I will one day get to see them back on the road to their home in Massachusetts and some closure to all the unresolved baggage in their trunk.

Volume two of Spell on Wheels felt a bit more rushed than the previous volume and the ending was a little anticlimactic. It wrapped up way too easily and too fast in my opinion. Still, I enjoy reading about this coven of modern day witches and their cross-country journeys.

i didn’t like this one as much as the first, i feel like there was a lot of uncertainty surrounding what was going on for majority of the time. even the characters didn’t seem that strong in this volume. i still enjoyed the illustrations though.

This was such a fantastic witchy read that kind of reminded me of my favroite TV Show Charmed. I loved all three female characters and their strong friendship. The road trip was fun but I feel like the first volume had more going on with the plot. Theres not many stops where we get to meet new characters. We pretty much spend the entire volume tracking down a new witch who is possessing one of them which was interesting but I would have liked a bit more from the story. Besides that I liked the art and dialogue.

This was okay but definitely not as polished as the first volume. Also I simply think Annabelle should get to have little a revenge murder, as a treat. If you can kill your abusive brother and boss with magic why shouldn't you ;)

It was great to see the Andy, Claire, and Jolene again, and wonderful to revisit the world....but ultimately the story felt kind of rushed and I truly would have loved a bit more depth. I am a sucker for friendship stories though, and the friction between the characters as they were trying to figure themselves out was great, if trope-y in moments, but in ways that worked for the most part, but would have been better with more time and pages.

What a letdown this was. I didn't like Jo or Claire in this volume. The way they were treating Andy pissed me off and the rushed apologies from everyone didn't ease my annoyance. There was really no plot to follow. Nothing of note happened to move the story along. This second volume feels totally unnecessary.

I also didn't like the new artwork. It didn't mesh with the story and felt too cartoony. This was just a bad reading experience overall. If you're a fan of the first volume, you might be better off leaving this series unfinished.

This continuation of the story of the three witchy BFFs stays consistently on a plateau of storytelling. It only slightly gives a little more information about the characters and their world. The storytelling is still lacking, but once again, the artwork makes up for the weakness of the plot.

I felt this could have been one issue rather than a volume as there is a lot of mindless filler that doesn't tie into the plot of finding a new magic user. I liked the first issue a lot better than this one, but overall both volumes are good time killers for those of us into modern witches and magical beings.

You would enjoy this graphic novel if you liked Charmed and Buffy the Vampire Slayer in high school.

I’m enjoying this series quite a bit so far, and I was even a bit sad when I finished this volume because there isn’t a vol 3 for me to jump straight into.

I did have an issue with the art in this volume — it didn’t feel entirely stylistically consistent with the previous issues, and a few times Claire’s eyes changed from blue to brown, and I don’t think that was intentional or “magic”

Speaking of Claire, I can tell she is a self-insert character, and fuck is she toxic. So toxic. The kind of friend I would dump for my own self-care. Hopefully she improves in future volumes.

While this was a light read, I didn't feel like there was a point to it. Sure, there was the whole story with the blonde, but I don't feel like there's really an over-all drive to this series. It's just a trio of girls that don't really like each other that travel around even if they don't want to. At least, that's what it feels like to me. The tattoo thing really didn't help, for now it just feels like a toxic relationship as well, where they own each other.

I didn't like this as much as the first volume.
The story seemed too disjointed and too contained at the same time.
While in volume one, they make multiple stops until they find the person they are looking for, all these stops seemed purposeful. This time there were just different locations and small glimpses in what could be more, without really delving deep. It felt too surface level, like we just wanted to get to the final destination without a real journey. This is supposed to be a road trip story, but it didn't feel like one for me.

I also didn't like the conflict between Jo, Claire and Andy. To me, it felt forced and out of nowhere. They seemed to already have such a strong bond in the previous story and had gotten through so much worse, why are they suddenly fighting now? And I also don't feel like the conflict got really resolved (yes, the magic tattoos were nice, but I don't think they should be the "we're absolutely fine now" thing, especially as some conflict still lingers afterwards.)

I also didn't like the ending. It feels like there needed to be more build-up. Annabelle's character felt one dimensional. Yes, she is angry and she uses her powers for bad, but her anger is justified and I would have wished for a more nuanced take on all of it. Especially because the whole "only use your magic for good!" thing was mentioned throughout the story, but we never delved deeper? I wanted to explore this more and feel like the comic didn't deliver on that.

But: I still liked the art and the characters overall. I just preferred volume one to this.

I thought this arc was stronger than the last. Though I think there’s more focus on exciting! Supernatural-esque mysteries to solve than on the characters themselves.

Gorgeous art, but I was very disappointed in the story line. It felt very disjointed and confusing. I didn't get a resolution and am still unclear about the plot? The character development was also lacking like I just couldn't see the characters doing or saying what they did especially with the intergroup conflict. I did not feel like it was a continuation of volume 1 but it's own stand-alone and that was a bummer too since I really loved the first. Rounded up from a 2.5

I don't recommend it and honestly think the first should have just been a stand alone.
