Fell monsters inhabit a network of caves on the borderland between savage wilderness and frontier civilization. Can the heroic adventurers root them out and save nearby towns and villages from attack? The Chaotic Caves is an adventure module for the Basic Fantasy Role-Playing Game. It includes a town setting, a small wilderness area with a number of keyed encounters, a set of underground lairs for various monstrous creatures, and an abandoned manor house. The Chaotic Caves is suitable for a group of first to third level characters, and a number of pregenerated characters are provided for those who wish to get underway quickly.
This is a neat little set of adventures, probably inspired by the Caves of Chaos in B2: The Keep on the Borderlands. It is presented minimalist, even more minimalist than the originals: the DM is expected to provide even the names of townsfolk.
In some town on the edge of civilization, monster attacks are increasing. A basic town is provided, but the GM is expected to use some named but possibly unmapped town of their own. The maps themselves are very nicely detailed.
There are encounter areas in the wilderness surrounding the town, and of course their are the eponymous caves which, while not quite a mega dungeon, are very extensive. Different sections of the caves are inhabited by different groups. If the DM provides each with its own personality, this should be a very interesting and fun several sessions. There are definitely several sessions in this adventure; it will not be completed in one night.
A nice touch is that each encounter includes checkboxes for hit points. Obviously, this is more doable in an adventure for levels 1-3 than, say 8-10. Another nice touch is that the PDFs are available for free download, making it easy to make extra copies of the maps.
