Washington Whodunit #4

K Street Killing

Rate this book
It's the height of campaign season, and instead of relishing newlywed bliss with her husband Doug Hollingsworth, Capitol Hill staffer Kit Marshall is busy with a tough reelection fight for her boss, member of Congress Maeve Dixon. Before Maeve and her staff—Kit included—leave Washington, D.C. to campaign full time in North Carolina, they have one last fundraising engagement. On the iconic rooftop of a restaurant overlooking the Capitol and the Washington monument, Kit and her best pal Meg do their best to woo wealthy lobbyists for sizable campaign donations. Everyone's enjoying the evening soiree until a powerful K Street tycoon mysteriously tumbles off the rooftop. Even with claims the fall must be suicide, Detective Maggie Glass and Kit aren't so easily convinced foul play isn't at work. While balancing Doug's mid-life career crisis, Kit must spring into action to discover who killed the notorious Van Parker before Dixon's candidacy sputters, even if it means investigating Meg's handsome new beau, the victim's conniving widow, and a bicycle advocate hell-bent on settling a long-standing grudge. When threatening note is left on Kit's car, warning her to back off the investigation, she knows she's closing in on the true story of what happened. Book 4 of the Washington Whodunit series, which began with Stabbing in the Senate.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Things in Washington D.C. these days are crazier than ever so there is no more perfect time for author Colleen J. Shogan to take us behind the scenes right before an election and to a fundraiser attended by a bunch of wealthy lobbyists held on the rooftop with a spectacular view. Congresswoman Maeve Dixon is on the committee in charge of the big transportation bill and lobbyists for trucks, trains, and yes, even bicycles want to speak to her so that they get want they want included in the bill. That’s why that have made generous donations to her campaign to attend this dinner.

The candidate has to leave early for one last vote on the hill before she heads home to campaign. She leaves Kit Marshall, her chief of staff, and her best friend Meg to stay at the event to entice the guests to give more to the campaign. Kit decides to sneak out early and when she reaches the street outside she hears screams and rushes to see what happened. It appears that one of the lobbyists has taken a nosedive from the rooftop locale. Everyone immediately thinks suicide, except for Kit and Detective Maggie Glass. They think it is murder. Everyone still at the party becomes a suspect and Meg and Kit are stuck in D.C. instead of following their boss to North Carolina. This death could send the congresswoman’s campaign into a tailspin. Kit finds herself again up to her eyeballs in a murder investigation. If the threatening note she finds on her car is any indication she is on the right track.

Newlywed Kit Marshall is a smart protagonist that doesn’t back down to a challenge and in this story, she has her hands full. A reelection campaign, a murder investigation, and a husband that has just been offered a plum job, but it is not in Washington. She keeps putting her husband off for the time being because if her boss doesn’t win reelection she will need to find a new job. She has never thought about a job outside the beltway. Right now, who pushed Van Parker to his death is her number one priority. I really enjoyed myself following along with her every step of the way. When it is time for the big killer reveal, Kit handles it in a truly classic way.

Ms. Shogan has written another fantastic story that is hard to put down. The characters are well developed and the plot is edgy with plenty of twists. The character’s dialogue is believable and at times pretty funny. We get a wonderful peek at the life of a congressional staffer. Her descriptive writing style brings Washington D.C. to life, from the rooftop restaurant to the congressional office and everything in between.

While this is the 4th book in the series, it can easily be read on its own. Of course, to really get to know Kit Marshall you have to start at the beginning.

With a breezy writing style that included lots of interesting tidbits and history about places and events in Washington DC this novel was a fun and easy to read. The clues to the mystery were logically presented and seemed to flow well. I loved the characters and their interactions. The dialogues were occasionally humorous which helped keep the overall tone of the novel upbeat. There are numerous characters, and sometimes I had a little trouble keeping everybody straight in my head but the author did do a good job giving the main players individual mannerisms, traits, and quirks.

This book is number 4 in a series featuring Kit Marshall but reads fine as a standalone.

The race for Congress is heating up for Kit Marshall’s boss Maeve Dixon. Things are really turning nasty in this campaign. Before they all head back to campaign headquarters in North Carolina, they are hosting one more fundraiser in Washington D.C.

As Kit and her best friend Meg mingle and try to get donations, the fundraiser takes a horrible turn. A wealthy lobbyist, Van Parker, topples over the rooftop to his death. The investigation begins to find out if this was suicide or murder. In either case, it doesn’t paint Maeve Dixon in a good light. Kit fears this will destroy the campaign and possibly even her own career. She will do anything to prevent both from happening.

Kit and Meg work together to uncover the truth about Van Parker’s death. They are quite surprised to discover he had quite a number of enemies. More and more they believe this was not suicide.

This is the fourth book of the Washington Whodunit series. I read the first one and enjoyed it. I missed the next two, but I will definitely take the time to catch up. I don’t think it ruined anything for me jumping to the fourth book, but it’s always more enjoyable when you can watch the character grow with each book.

The characters are well-developed and jump right off the pages. The author’s descriptions of Washington are very vivid and transported me right into the center of DC without ever leaving my seat.

It’s a captivating story filled with much intrigue. There’s a touch of romance, but not much. The story centers around the mystery which is exactly how I like it. The ending surprised me. It kept me guessing to the end. I’m looking forward to the next book in this series.

“K Street Killing” by Colleen J. Shogan is part of the ‘Washington Whodunnit’ series that features Kit Marshall, whose duties as chief of staff for a Congressional Representative from North Carolina suddenly expand to include the need to solve a mysterious death. As if that isn’t enough, her home life is threatening to go through upheaval when a job opportunity opens up in another state, prompting even more conflict between her husband of a few months and her best friend since childhood.

This delightful cozy mystery is a bit different since it is set in the political world of Washington, DC rather than a small whimsical town, but it definitely has an interesting cast. Although this is part of a series, I had no trouble connecting with the characters and getting intrigued by the story. It was fascinating to learn about the maneuverings and legalities involved with fundraising and lobbyists and I obtained a new perspective and new knowledge about the roles various folks play and some of the lines that theoretically regulate their duties and actions. I love Clarence and his foibles and I enjoyed the glimpse of a world that is entirely foreign to me. There were some aspects of the mystery that were a bit predictable, but it was still entertaining to watch the case unfold and I would happily read more stories in this series.

This series is so much fun, and book four was no exception. I enjoyed learning all about Washington DC while guessing whodunit. So many lines made me laugh out loud, like this one: “Compared to Meg, I looked like Mary Poppins. I might as well scream supercalifragilisticexpialidocious and call it a day.” A perfect cozy read!

K Street Killing by Colleen J. Shogan is A Washington Whodunit. Kit Marshall is the chief of staff for Congresswoman Maeve Dixon. It is re-election time and they have tough opposition in Coach Mack Hackensack. That evening Kit, Maeve and Meg Peters are attending one last campaign fundraiser at Charlie Palmer’s before departing for North Carolina the next day. Van Parker, a principal transportation lobbyist, is in attendance along with his wife, Lauren and Dash Dugal, a lobbyist for the American Railway Federation and Meg’s current beau. With only a few stragglers left on the rooftop enjoying the wine, Kit departs leaving Meg to supervise. As Kit is about to get into an Uber, she hears a scream. Kit runs over to find Van Parker sprawled in the alley after a tumble off the roof. Detective Maggie Glass soon arrives to interview the remaining guests and staff. While there are claims of suicide, the detective and Kit are not convinced. Kit needs to solve this conundrum before Maeve’s campaign goes off the rails. Kit must also deal with her husband’s unexpected news. He has a job offer from Columbia that will provide him with some new challenges. It would be a big change for Kit. But first she needs to catch the culprit and get Maeve re-elected to Congress.

K Street Killing takes readers behind the scenes of the Washington political scene. We get to read about the inner workings of a representative’s office and the trials of a re-election campaign. There are a number of legalities the staff must adhere to that I was not aware of prior to reading K Street Killing. I cannot imagine trying to maintain two phones to keep office and campaign duties separate (I have trouble keeping track of just one phone). It made for interesting reading and I could tell that the author had first-hand knowledge. I recommend reading the books in A Washington Whodunit in order. K Street Killing was my first experience with A Washington Whodunit series, and I felt that I was missing out on details especially regarding Kit. I knew that she worked in various political offices in Washington, was currently Chief of Staff for Maeve Dixon, had a dog, her best friend was Meg and was newly married. I would have liked to know more about the main character. I enjoyed the references to Agatha Christie’s mysteries and her various sleuths. I can see where the author obtained her inspiration for the crime in K Street Killing (reminiscent of a movie I watched recently). I thought the mystery was clever. There is misdirection, a handful of suspects and a crafty killing. I would have liked a better resolution of the crime. To hear a confession or the solution directly from Detective Glass. I will admit to enjoying the digs at POTUS. I thoroughly enjoyed Clarence, Kit’s dog, and his antics. His love for food reminds me of my dog, Doozy (who lives up to his name). I wonder what mischief Kit will encounter in the next A Washington Whodunit.

If you like a little politics with your romance, then K Street Killing is right up your alley. The book is the fourth installment in the series, but it can be read as a standalone book. It’s an easy read and you are sure to learn the ins and outs of working for a Congressman. The tone of the book is upbeat and I found a few parts pretty funny. The book contained all the moving parts that you would expect from a cozy mystery novel.

Who would think it…a political cozy who done it? A really good picture of Washington DC, it’s Congressional workings, and the lowly paid staff that work so hard for a Congressperson and/or for a political campaign. Something that really struck me that has never occurred to me - if the Congressperson you work for doesn’t win another election, you are out of a job. You learn something in every book, don’t you?

As I said, Shogan did a good job of describing and painting the life of the staff and of her characters. This is very suitable as a YA mystery. Sort of a Nancy Drew goes to Washington DC theme. I don’t mean this as an insult. This was a nice, clean, fun cozy mystery. Suitable for any age to read. I will say I read enough about hair styles, make-up and designer clothes to last me for a lifetime but that might be my age showing :) Other than that, a very enjoyable book.

This is book 4 of Shogan’s series titled “A Washington Whodunit”. All of the books in the series have pretty good reviews so try them out.

I love a good mystery book and this one totally takes the cake!

This book delves into the elite D.C. powerhouse world where Kit is working as chief of staff for Congresswoman Maeve Dixon’s reelection. At the team’s last fundraising engagement in D.C. before they head off to North Carolina, their night becomes anything but ordinary. While Kit and BFF Meg continue to work the crowd, a powerful K Street Tycoon tumbles off the rooftop. While most people seem to chalk it up toward suicide, Kit and Detective Maggie Glass lean toward foul play. While Kit begins her investigation it’s clear that someone doesn’t want her looking into this mysterious death. With threats and someone clearly after her, Kit knows she is on the right trail. Between having to interview and investigate some uncomfortable suspects, including Kit’s BFF’s new BF, dealing with threatening messages being left for her, and adjusting to married life, Kit is more determined than ever to solve Van Parker’s murder and get back to spending time her new hubby.

This is the second book I’ve read in this book series. I previously read, reviewed, and blogged about Colleen’s third book in this series, “Calamity at the Continental Club,” last year, so I was thrilled to do the same with this book!

I really liked the main characters! And I was so excited to see Kit and Doug finally married! They are so cute together! It was great to see their relationship grow and see them take the next step together. You get so invested in characters sometimes – especially in a book series, so it’s great to see them happy and still together! Also, the supporting characters were well-developed and amply played off the main cast.

This book has an excellent storyline that flows, terrific writing style with detailed scenes, fantastic characters, is fast paced, and keeps you completely entertained through the last page.

This book has exceptional mystery crime solving structure with enough clues and excitement to keep you guessing, but still practical and realistic in police procedures.

Again, I loved the D.C. backdrop in this book series that continued into this fourth book as the author shows her D.C. roots by throwing in so many references throughout the book since the book does take place there. I have been to D.C. a few times and loved it. So, I really enjoy when I read a book from there that the real D.C. is found in the pages – and it sure was!

I love how this author included historical references in her writings as this gives the book that little extra something!

This book has so much to offer the reader, such as, action, mystery, suspense, excitement, intrigue, adrenaline, drama, love, romance, friendship, and so much more!

There are some very predictable scenes. However, there are still a few unexpected twists and turns that you won’t see coming!

This is the fourth book in the Washington Whodunit Book Series. Although, this book is part of a book series, it can absolutely be read on its own as a standalone.

All in all, I really enjoyed reading this book and would absolutely recommend this book to anyone interested in a fun, exciting, intriguing, mystery book.

And they do just keep getting better. I think part of it is sometimes
characters make their way into your world and just won't let go.
That is what happens with the characters that Colleen Shogan
gives us in the Washington Who Dun It series.

I have read a couple books in the series and they do just keep getting better.

In the newest installment all the characters are back including
Kit her husband Doug and their dog Clarence, her best friend Meg, Trevor a friend and fellow sleuth who Meg and Kit worked with previously. And Detective Glass who surprisingly accepts Kits
meddling into police investigations.

Kit runs into a little problem with solving this one though when she
thinks Megs new boyfriend just might be involved. She has to
tread water carefully around Meg while they work together to solve the mystery.

Although each book is written as a stand alone I have an idea
that there might be a little something going on leading to a new/real
romance for Meg. We can only hope. I won't spill the beans. I will
have to wait for the next one to see if I am right!

As with most Cozy's Kit has an ability to run into crime (mostly) murder and a talent to ferret out the criminals.

Old mystery movies tend to give her a little help in solving crimes as does this one. While watching Murder On the Orient Express
everything comes together for Kit and she and her pals set the scene and catch the culprit(s).

The author gives the reader a bit of a tour of Washington. In each
installment sharing facts and places of interest other than just political places to visit.
This is a fun series and I really enjoy it. I am looking forward to the next crime Kit and crew have to solve.

I received a complimentary copy.

Let me say that politics has never really interested me; too many interests, corruption and affairs, no one ever tells the truth and behave only for their interests. So when I started reading K Street Killing I was sure a Congress member would be killed and that Kit Marshall (the main character) would had to discover the truth. I was a bit mistaken about the victim, but don't get me wrong, he was avaricious, with a lot of enemies and not a very kind man. Of course no one deserve to be murdered, so will say the killer will earn going to prison. But a part from that, while we read this book we will see corruption, affairs, lies and a cute dog that loves to eat! So be prepared for a roller coaster at Capitol Hill!
Let me say that Kit Marshall is a good woman, she loves her job (even if I simply hate it just thinking about it), she is brave and always tries to keep everyone happy around her. This will mean that she will have to "lie" a little to her best friend Meg, about her new boyfriend and try to be happy for her husband Doug's news... lucky for her after solving the murder everything will fit in their place after giving a few headaches to her, of course!
It was interesting how they solve the murder, putting everything together to uncover what really happened and discover the truth, there will be only one casualty in this case, I can promise you.
This had been a quick read, and there are a lot of characters, but it was not difficult to follow their lies and interests...! So, even if this is the 4th book of the Washington Whodunit series, you can read it as standalone.

Washington insiders do say that campaign season can kill you….

The 4th and latest installment of Colleen J. Shogun’s deliciously dangerous Washington whodunit series, K Street Killing, shows how hungry everyone in the Capital City can be for power.

At an upscale DC fundraiser for Kit Marshall’s Congressional boss, Kit and her friend/colleague Meg are focused on wooing potential donors to the Congresswoman’s campaign so they can get to the home District and help her cause back there… But when a powerful lobbying tycoon falls from the rooftop at the fundraiser, the pair need focus on figuring out what happened. Suicide or murder? The mystery must be satisfactorily solved or the Congresswoman’s hold on her seat, and their jobs - are going to plummet as well.

Everyone knows lobbyists prioritize their own interests, so Kit and Meg don’t know who to trust. But does anyone really trust anyone in DC??

This one has it all… ambitious females, a fast pace, unpredictable clues to guess the culprit, and so many power hungry politicos! Shogun adds just enough local flavor to give it a true Washington insider angle; but the local commentary is just the icing on the cake.

For those truly interested in the inner workings of DC, with a little extra House of Cards style drama to make it all the more exciting, K Street Killing offers a feel for what its like to work in a Congressional office around campaign season… Cutthroat!

While this is the fourth book in the Washington Whodunit Series, it is the first that I had a chance to read. I was totally taken with Kit, Congresswoman Dixon’s chief of staff, and her associate Meg. Their actions and dialogue demonstrate a true friendship while under the strain of a political re-election and the murder investigation of a prominent lobbyist.

Colleen Shogan gives you a glimpse of the workings of Congress and lobbyists and the functions of the hard-working staffs that are seldom recognized. As a fan of the last Margaret Truman’s DC mysteries, I was happy to find this series. It was an entertaining read that contained humor and a good mystery. I look forward to reading the rest of this series and would recommend it as a good political cozy.

I would like to thank Voracious Reader and the author for making this available for my honest review.

Perfect example of what I would think a political group in Washington DC may may like. Once again our heroine gets to work on the murder during the time just prior to the election. Her boss (the Democratic Representative who's running for reelection) does not place any real demands on her regarding her sleuthing & even seems to encourage her senior staff member to do what's best. Her boyfriend, best friend and co-worker are fully involved in this series. And the police officer in charge of the investigation is told what this group is doing in this who done it, while the officer then is no where to be seen. I really like her style of writing, and who done it style. I like that the characters never painfully try to talk her out of anything she wants to do. I do wish the characters were a tad more believable than accommodating.

Here’s an inside view of Washington politics and murder all rolled up into one. The protagonist, Kit Marshall, comes across as likable, friendly, and caring, especially for her boss’s welfare. Dialogue was well done, and the plot contained twists to keep the reader guessing until near the end.

The multiple issues facing Kit helped to generate tension and keep the story moving forward at a good pace. What drew me to this book was the insider view of the political system. I felt there was sufficient information presented to help me gain insight into a few aspects of our political system without being overwhelmed or bogged down in minutia. This is by no means a political textbook, but is a solid cozy mystery taking place within the wacky world we call Washington.

I received this book via voracious readers in return of a honest review, now let me me state that politics has never interested me at all ; with all the corruption and affairs, no one ever appears to tell the truth and have only for their interests at heart. So before I began reading K Street Killing I was certain that a political person would be killed and that Kit Marshall (the main character) would be the one who had to discover the truth and facts about it. I wasn't wrong but i did find the twists within the storyline more interesting than i first thought.
I enjoyed this book very much

This well written mystery provides an interesting glimpse into the world of congressional staffers and their interactions with lobbyists. Kit Marshall is single-minded in her determination to wrap up the murder investigation and get back to her boss’s campaign. She actively seeks to identify the killer, even though it should be the police’s job. I found the detective’s acceptance of her meddling to be a bit unrealistic. Nonetheless, the well-paced plot held my interest throughout. I found the setup leading to the mystery’s resolution reminiscent of Agatha Christie and other traditional mystery writers. And, of course, I loved Clarence and his antics.

Behind the scenes books always interest me and this one about political shenanigans and varied political characters did not disappoint! I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys mysteries filled with interesting characters. The Agatha Christi references were perfect and the Marple/Poirot conclusion was satisfying.

Review: K STREET KILLING by Colleen Shogan

Reading this enearing series is an education in DC culture. Yes, Virginia, the District of Columbia is "a whole 'nother thing." Fortunately, amidst all the greed, cupidity, egotism, and nonsense, there are some good folks, chief among them our protagonist, Kit Mitchell, her best friend Meg, and Kit' s new hubby, Doug. Kit and Meg are unstoppable amateur sleuths who refuse to be turned aside in their pursuit of justice. When a famous hard-driving lobbyist falls to his death at a fundraiser for Kit and Meg's Congresswoman boss, and Meg becomes a person of interest, sleuthing is essential.
