The closer she gets to the truth, the more she finds herself drowning in trouble
It’s an exciting time in Sweet River, Texas, and the whole town is talking. Maybe, a little too much. Former English professor Ainsley McGregor has gambled everything on her new business: Bless Your Art, an artisan market where local artists sell their wares and teach classes.
The bright, white space is filled to the brim with colorful art, yarn, jewelry, pet treats, antiques and even a few medieval weapons. Oh, and there are wine tastings. Everything is better with wine. Ainsley is surprised by how well things are going–right up until the moment her Great Dane finds a dead body. With her friend accused of the murder, it’s up to Ainsley to find the real killer.
As the suspect list grows longer, Ainsley has her work cut out for her. The task is made more difficult by the fact her brother, the sheriff, doesn’t seem to want her help. If she doesn’t wrap up the case soon, she might be the next wine, um, one to die.

A Case for the Winemaker by Candace Havens 1st in the Ainsley McGregor cozy mystery series. Ainsley returned home to the small town of Sweet River, TX and opened a community art shop that houses multiple neighbors and independent vendors. The day before the store opens Ainsley and her Great Dane discover the body of a murdered man in the park. Opening day has the whole town visiting the store with questions and gossip with a conviction that the man arrested could not be the murderer. Ainsley and her bookclub create a murder board to gather clues and help free their friend from the sheriff’s most likely list of suspects. But someone doesn’t like their snooping around and Ainsley gets several warnings to cease.
An appealing cozy mystery that has a bit of suspense plus a fun cast of friends that “just want to help”. A hint of potential romance in future books as Ainsley scolds herself for admiring the handsome fireman best friend of her brother. The murder board that was a secret to no one was humorous and smart. Great writing flow and tension have me looking forward to reading more of this series.
This is the first book in a new series by author Candace Havens. She is a new to me author, but it won't be the last thing I read by her. I found this book to be an easy, enjoyable read. It has a good plot and the story moves along at a good pace. The characters are well written and very likable. There is plenty of room for the author to continue to develop and grow all of the characters and relationships. Ainsely is a fun protagonist, and I think readers will find her very likable. She is surrounded by a diverse cast of secondary characters which adds to the overall depth of the story. Each of the townspeople adds something different which makes them interesting and able to contribute to this mystery and future books in the series. Ainsley's dog George Clooney provides a good bit of humor and is written so as to be considered one of the secondary characters.
The mystery was not overly complex, but the author did do a nice job of providing a number of suspects for the reader to choose from. There some nice red-herrings which do a good job of distracting the reader, or at least causing doubt as to the actual identity of the killer. My only criticism is that the killer's motive was not fully disclosed. It seemed a bit light. That said, I did really enjoy this book and I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
Solid start for a new series. I liked the setting and the idea of her shop for artisans. The mystery was interesting but I figured out who the guilty party was early on. Otherwise, I enjoyed this and will continue with the series.
In the late 2000’s, (doesn’t that sound so long ago), I read the two books in Candace Havens’ Caruthers Sisters series, The Demon King and I and Dragons Prefer Blondes. I was disappointed when more didn’t come out. So when I saw that Havens had a new cozy mystery series, I knew I wanted to read it.
First off, George Clooney, her Great Dane, steals the show. The way he talks, grunts, and knows what people are saying is so true to that breed.
And I love that the whole town is down to help with the murder board even though it’s supposed to be a secret. It starts off with the book club members, then Ainsley’s college students jump in, and then the rest of the town. I’ve found more cozies incorporating murder boards recently, which I love. I wonder if the authors got the ideas from the various Hallmark Mystery Movies that use them, or from Trial and Error, a two season comedy TV show, that I absolutely loved. The mystery was done well, but I felt like it could have used a few more suspects, just because to me it was obvious early on who the killer was. But that did not stop me from enjoying A Case for the Winemaker.
With all the characters, the artisanal gallery, and the adorable town in Texas, Havens has tons of potential for future books. I’m looking forward to getting to know the book club members more, and already some of the college students are really pulling their weight when it comes to assisting Ainsley with her investigating.
In most cozies you have some law official who tells the ameatur sleuth to stay away from the crime, and in this series it’s her brother. I’m glad he didn’t go overboard with his demands and realized he needed to find ways to help her stay safe.
And there are so many alpha males, who play nicely with each other, in this book that it adds a dollop of deliciousness to the story. It’ll be interesting to see if Ainsley’s attraction for any of them heats up in the future.
A fun start to a new cozy series and I’m looking forward to book two, A Case for the Yarn Maker, which comes out on April 16, 2020.
I really enjoyed the start of this series. This book was a fun, quick, easy read. I liked Ainsley and the other characters and look forward to getting to know them better. The small town setting was cute. The mystery did keep me guessing and the ending was exciting. George was adorable and deserves extra t-r-e-a-t-s for all his hard work.
This is a short cozy mystery. I did enjoy it. I enjoyed the relationship between Kathleen, the protagonist, and her Great Dane George Clooney. I just wish it had been a full length. I would love to have delved deeper into the characters and town. I was interested enough to read the next book in the series.
I wrote this book and I'm so grateful to all of you for posting reviews. I didn't know about the village solves a mystery aspect. I was afraid it might be too different. But you all have shown me that I need to trust my gut. I figured she'd need help since it's her first time to do this sort of thing. Thank you. :)
This delightful cozy mystery - the first from Havens - had me saying "just one more chapter" until I reached the satisfying end. A Case for the Winemaker checked all the boxes - enough clues and red herrings to have me going back and forth on the killer, charming possibilities of romance (the hot fire chief or Idris Elba look-alike coroner. Oh my!), fun quirky characters you want to spend time with, and hints of English professor/market bazaar owner Ainsley McGregor's backstory that are sure to come into play in future stories. Pack me up for a road trip to Sweet River, TX, so I can join the book club, shop the booths at Bless Your Art, and spend time with an energetic George Clooney. I'm definitely looking forward to more books in this great, new series. Havens is meant for this market!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
I really enjoyed this book,it reminded me of the series Murder She Wrote. The characters were very likable, especially George Clooney 🤪 This was my first book by Candace Havens & I’ll definitely be reading more
Ainsley is getting things ready to open her new store called Bless our Art. She decides to walk her Great dane called George Clooney in the park behind her store. While they are on their walk George starts barking and they find a dead body.
Her brother is the Sheriff and all the evidence leads towards their best friend Michael. So he gets arrested and Ainsley sets out to prove his innocence because Michael is her best friends Fiance and they don't think he would have murdered anyone.
This new series features Ainsley McGregor who recently moved to small town Texas to open a new art business. With small towns come big secrets and with big secrets comes gossip. LOTS of gossip! I loved all the characters, including the secondary characters, everyone had a part, a connection, and was necessary for this cozy mystery! I look forward to the next book in this series!
I just finished reading an advanced copy of Candace Havens’ first Cozy Mystery, A Case for the Winemaker. I’m a longtime reader fan of Ms. Havens, and she did not let me down with this venture into a new-to-her genre. In all honesty, I’m very finicky when it comes to Cozies, and I can say I truly loved this book.
I was completely drawn in to this story set in Sweet River, TX. Ainsley McGregor moved back to Texas and renovated an old building – complete with gargoyles – into a big year-round marketplace where local crafters can sell their creations. We meet the quirky crafter who always wears her favorite color, avocado green; Ainsley’s big brother, Greg the sheriff; Greg’s hunky friends; and of course, her Great Dane named George Clooney.
The first day of her business opening, Ainsley sees her BFF’s fiancé arguing with a man dripping with smarm and hair gel. Just hours later when out for a walk behind her building, George Clooney and Ainsley find Mr. Smarm dead under a pile of leaves. After investigating, Ainsley’s brother and another detective show up to arrest Michael, her friend’s fiancé. Determined to make sure Michael’s name is cleared, Ainsley vows to investigate and clear his name. Everyone in town agrees there’s no way this kind, thoughtful, gentle man could kill someone. So Ainsley and her group of friends set out to dig up all the information they can. Even when Ainsley is threatened and almost killed, she doesn’t give up.
I love so much about this book, from the well-rounded, interesting, quirky characters, to the craft market place, to the small-town Texas setting. I was kept guessing till the very end. I can’t wait to read more in this new Cozy series from Candace Havens!
I loved reading A Case for the Winemaker by Candace Havens book one in her Ainsley McGregor mystery series. Ainsley McGregor, a former, and now part-time, English professor, followed her dream and opened an artisan market in Sweet River, Texas. The market, “Bless Your Art”, would be a central location for local artists to sell their merchandise and teach classes, as well as hopefully bring tourists to the town. This space was filled to the rafters with colorful art, yarn, jewelry, pet treats, jellies, antiques and even a few medieval weapons. Can’t forget the wine and wine tastings. Then there’s the little problem of Ainsley’s Great Dane finding a dead body, while on their walk. When her friend is accused of the murder, Ainsley knows she has to figure out what happened and who the real killer is. Her protective brother, the sheriff, sure wasn’t going to let her help nor would his warning her to stop investigating. Then there’s the “Murder Board” that many of the vendors and town folk worked on, helping to figure out who the killer could be. If she didn’t find the killer soon she might be the next victim.
I genuinely enjoyed reading this funny, sweet and intriguing book and had trouble putting this book down. Ms Havens kept me on my toes guessing who the killer was, until I turned the last page. Her writing had me feeling as if I was there, watching the events unfold. I loved reading about Ainsley’s friendship with and crush on her brother’s friend, but who were off limits because of that bro code. I do hope that changes in future books. I highly recommend A Case for the Winemaker to other readers and look forward to the next book in this series.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
A Case for the Winemaker begins The Ainsley McGregor Series, a Cozy Mystery that kept me intrigued and searching for clues (along with the rest of this cast of characters) from beginning to end.
I love a good Cozy Mystery (and this is definitely one of those) but add in an adorable, smart Great Dane named George Clooney, the possibility of a romantic relationship developing over the course of the series (if they can get past the forbidden “bro” factor), a small-town feel with an abundance of quirky residents, and a really good mystery with lots of twists, surprises and red herrings scattered about – then you’ve got me hooked for the duration of the series.
Everything you really need to know to begin this story/series can be found in the Cover Description. And with a Cozy Mystery, I’m going to be even more careful about what I say here. I like Ainsley, she’s a complex character and I really can’t wait to get to know her, and her background even better. Now, any story is better with a dog (or cat), but make that a smart, adorable Great Dane with a swoon-worthy name and the personality to match – then yeah you’ve got me. Although a Cozy Mystery isn’t Romance, I really enjoy a story, even more, when there is a hint of Romance in the air, that possibility of two people falling in love and working cases together is always a draw for me so I’m really looking forward to seeing how that aspect develops over time.
In all, I had a great time with A Case for the Winemaker, easily got caught up in the story, found several good suspects but was still surprised by the ending, and discovered a series that I’ll want to keep up with – all put together, this one is a win for me. The next title is due in April of 2020 and I’m definitely going to be keeping an eye out for that.
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher, Tule Publishing. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*
Ainsley McGregor leaves behind tenure and two muggings when she returns home from Chicago to her small home town of Sweet River in the first book of a new series. Ms. Havens does a great job of balancing the need to build a foundation for her characters while not overwhelming the mystery story with them. I enjoyed reading this quick and easy cozy with lots of characters who seem to care about each other, especially Ainsley's brother and her best friend. Of course he is the chief of police and doesn't want her investigating! I did find that the writing style was a bit simplistic and veered on the side of trendy with things like "As.If." This will quickly become dated. I also wish Ms. Havens had been a big more expansive in her descriptions. Telling me a guy looks like Idris Elba (several times) does not help if I don't know who that person is. And again, I fear this locks the story in a place in time. But otherwise, I am looking forward to seeing what happens with Ainsley, the Idris Elba look alike, and her dog George Clooney. I love how Ms. Havens has really made him a central character and hope that continues!
Thanks to Cozy Review Crew for a copy of this book. This review is my own opinion.
A Case for the Winemaker is the first book of Candace Haven’s that I’ve read and it was a very enjoyable cozy mystery!! Ainsley McGregor has just moved to Sweet River, Texas after inheriting her grandmother’s farmhouse and opens a new business, Bless Your Art, an indoor market for local artisans. She and her dog, George Clooney (what a great name!), find a dead body right off the bat and this starts Ainsley’s quest to find the real murderer when one of her best friends is accused and thrown in jail.
I really liked the cast of character: Ainsley’s brother, Greg – the local sheriff, her best friends, Shannon and Mike, and hunky Jake the fireman. Ainsley manages to dig into places she shouldn’t be and eventually does find the murderer. But not without endangering herself, of course! Her brother is a tad (a lot!) overprotective and doesn’t even want Ainsley staying in her own home. Fortunately everything worked out in the end😊
This story was fast paced and I read it all in a single day. I love stories that really capture my attention and this was definitely one of them. I’ll be looking to read more of this author’s books in the future!
I was given a free copy of this book in the hope that I would review it; I am happy to do so.
This is the first of this author's books that I've read, and I'm really glad to see it's the first in a new series! I thought it looked adorable, and I wasn't disappointed. I love the setting (a quaint little town in Texas), and the protagonist's (Ainsley's) venture into entrepreneurship with the launch of a town artisan market. I can definitely see how this premise could spark ideas for future plot lines! I thought the inclusion of her Great Dane, George Clooney, was particularly cute, and loved the sparks between Ainsley and Jake (the fire chief). I also think it's a great twist by having Ainsely's brother as the sheriff (as sheriffs are usually featured as the heroine's love interest). The humor in this book was great, but a bit overkill, especially at the beginning. Also I pretty much guessed the killer right away. However, the cast of characters was really good and I enjoyed seeing how the story played out. This was a light, breezy read, perfect for being stuck on a airplane for 3 hours or lying on a tropical beach or by the pool! Or really anytime you want to put a smile on your face. :-)
A new to me author published by Tule Publishing. This has hints of romance but it is really a mystery book which is a nice departure from a publisher I know better for romance authors.
Ainsley MacGregor is a recovering academic who has moved to a small town in Texas after an incident in Chicago. Her brother is the sheriff in the town so it isn't as if she has no one there she knows. Ainsley has decided on a complete career change and has purchased an old building and turned it into a huge craft emporium where the local craft artisans and small home businesses can sell their products. One of the local businesses selling in the craft emporium happens to be the local winery. (This does factor into the storyline.)
Right as the emporium is having the grand opening, someone is murdered out back in the park. George Clooney, aka Ainsley's Great Dane, discovers the dead body which of course starts off the wonderful fast paced story. If you have ever watched an old episode of "Murder She Wrote." this follows along similar lines were the lead manages to find the missing clues the local police can't get.
The characters are wonderful and engaging. I can see a possible future romance happening for Ainsley with her neighbor if both of them can get past the don't date your brother's friends/sister unwritten rule.
This book moves at a fast but good pace with a great storyline and characters. I can't wait to read the next book in this series.
I was provided a copy of this book prior to publication by the publisher in exchange for a fair and unbiased review.
There are only a handful of cozy series that are a total hit out of the park for me. I’ve only been reading this genre a few years and can be sort of picky. This book checked all my cozy requirement boxes.
While I normally gravitate towards charming New England settings, I’ve become a huge fan of Sweet River, Texas where the story takes place. If only it were a real place and I could move there. The main character Ainsley, along with her friends, are definitely people I would want to hang out with. Did I mention the lovable George Clooney (Ainsley’s Great Dane) who I wanted to love on through the entire book?! The writing is witty with a side of sass and the story was so engaging that I actually had a hard time putting the book down (adulting is such a pain when I’m trying to hibernate and read for hours). The mystery had enough clues that I’d think I knew who the killer was, but then there would be a twist and I would end up second guessing my pick.
Everything wrapped up nicely in the end but I was sad to finish the book because I wanted to stay in the story a while longer. Now I sit and wait impatiently for the next book because this series is just that good.
Thank you @tulepublishing for sending me this ARC and introducing me to another wonderful author @candace_havens
4-4.5 stars This is a new cozy mystery series and is definitely a new favorite that I will be following. Ainsley McGregor is following her dreams and opening a gallery and market in her new Texas hometown. However, the night before her opening she stumped across a body while walking her adorable Great Dane. She's a smart and savy sleuth who had been through a lot of rough times, but is determined to keep her friend from doing time for the murder he did not commit, not matter the danger to herself. _ This book was a delight to read. I loved the descriptions of the town and especially Ainsley's new store, which will serve as a lovely location for the series. Ainsley herself is a great character and I also really enjoyed all the characters surrounding her (and especially all the hunky men). I hope the murder discussion / book club continues in future books! _ I found the murder a bit predictable, but still very enjoyable to follow. I love how other people int he town pulled together to add snippets of information and all contribute to solving the crime. I also really loved how much George the Great Dane was involved - how protective and smart he is! The ending was fast paced and heart racing. I am really looking forward to continuing this series! _ Thanks to the publisher for a copy of this book. I was happy to give my honest thoughts.
A Case For The Winemaker is the first book in Candace Haven's new Ainsley McGregor cozy mystery series. This was a first read for me by from this author , but definitely will not be my last, I am looking forward to reading the rest of her work. I enjoyed this book, i thought it was well written , entertaining and easy to follow. The characters are believable and likable, one of my favorite characters in this book was George Clooney, I love a good animal character!! I particularly enjoyed the sense of community and the way the entire town came together to help solve the crime and prove their friends innocence. I did figure out the mystery and who the culprit was fairly early but it in no way hindered my enjoyment of the rest of the book. I am looking forward to reading this series and seeing what is in store for Ainsley and the rest of the residents of Sweet River. Maybe she will break that dating rule?! Here's hoping!
I loved every minute of this well-written whodunit from new-to-me author Candace Havens that had me totally involved in all that was happening from beginning to end. I felt an instant connection to Ainsley McGregor who opens Bless Your Art, an artisan market in the quaint little town of Sweet River, Texas and enjoyed her dynamic with the lovable cast of characters, especially her Great Dane George Clooney, her brother Greg (the sheriff) and his best friends, Jake (fire chief) and Kane (coroner and ME). This is a perfect debut to the Ainsley McGregor series and I can hardly wait to read more about what's happening in Sweet River. I received an advance reader copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving my review. This goes on my shelf as one of my favorite books - certainly one that I will read over and over again. I also purchased a copy for my Kindle.
A Case For The Winemaker, by Candace Havers, is a lovely light cosy mystery set in Sweet River, Texas. I couldn’t help but love star of the show Ainsley McGregor, owner of Bless Your Art, a newly established bazaar hosting numerous small arts, craft and food stalls among other things. I loved the sense of community this book engenders. Ainelsy’s Great Dane George Clooney is also central to the story and when a dog features strongly I am immediately immersed. I loved the way the busybody network that is so prevalent in small towns helped Ainsley unravel the murder of a man at the back of her business. This story is endearing because of its characters, and intriguing because of its plot. Very satisfying!
A fun start to a new series. I want a group of friends like Ainsley, not to mention a dog like George. Ms. Havens writing style is very easy to read and she is fast paced enough that you will find yourself quickly engrossed in the story and might even find yourself finishing the book faster than you thought. I really enjoyed the pace and her characters. With as many characters that we are introduced to in this book, the potential for more story lines and interaction. With Ainsly as the focal point, her friends will make for interesting mysteries. I am looking forward to the other books in this series.
A Case for the Winemaker is the first book in the Ainsley McGregor series by Candace Havens. A lovely fast-paced mystery that will have you turning the pages unsure what will happen next. Havens pulls you in from the beginning and holds your attention until the surprising end. The characters are well-written and easy to relate to with intriguing backstories. A Case for the Winemaker is a captivating mystery that is sure to leave you wanting more!
Not only is this a new author for me but it is also a genre that I haven't read a great deal of and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it. There was no angst or major drama It just flowed along and the characters and setting where the making of the story
I am not going to rehash the story line you can read that in the blurb what I will say is that George Clooney almost in fact probably does steal the show. I am also looking forward to a future romance that may or may not brew for Ainsley
With her Sheriff brother's encouragement, Ainsley McGregor leaves her professorial life in the cold north to move home to Texas to build a new business: a haven for artists to display their wares. When a murder occurs behind her building and a close friend is implicated, Ainsley runs a separate investigation to get to the heart of the crime.
While this is, admittedly, a smaller novel I guzzled it late last night. The characters were easy to bond with and the story held me spellbound. I also loved the glimpse into the creative process behind writing. It felt both meta and organic. A five-star rating is rare for me, but this story deserves it.
