Roxy's Recovery

Rate this book
As the newest veterinarian in the small town of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Vaughn Winters doesn't have time for relationships. He is too busy healing injuries and establishing his reputation as a trustworthy vet. But when a strange man waves him down on a stormy night seeking help for his injured dog, Vaughn simply can't refuse.

Obviously homeless and with no means to pay for Roxy's medical care, Vaughn throws caution to the wind and strikes a deal with the hesitant stranger that would allow Roxy the time to heal and provide some much needed TLC to his property as well. As the days pass, Vaughn's curiosity grows. Alex's dedication to the job is as surprising as the sexy tats hidden beneath his rugged clothes. What could have pushed this kind, hardworking man to the streets, or cast such dark shadows in his otherwise bright blue eyes?

Will six weeks be enough time to earn Alex's trust? Or will asking questions cause him to tuck tail and run as soon as Roxy is able?

Roxy's Recovery is a 61k standalone contemporary romance involving two men, a meddling sister, and a seriously sassy pug.

I am an Idaho native who grew up dreaming about traveling the world and writing stories. As a child, I would often spend my spare time curled up with my favorite blanket and a notebook, writing another fairy tale. I never would have guessed those fairy tales would one day grow into gay romances, but that is where my heart led me and I am so glad it did. I write about love because I believe it can happen to anyone, with anyone. I also believe dreams never expire, redemption is possible, and true forgiveness can heal us in ways we never expect. I know firsthand how messy life can get, but as any artist will tell you, a little mess is needed to create something beautiful. That’s why I write, to help others see that anything can be beautiful. You can often find me with a mug of coffee in one hand and a dog toy in the other. There is never a day that goes by without my sweet boy insisting on a game - or twenty - of fetch.

I liked this book, but it wasn't true, undying love and devotion for me.

Alex and his pug, Roxy, had been homeless and on the road for months, when Roxy's leg was broken by a hit and run driver in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

Luckily for them, local veterinarian Vaughn was the person that they flagged down for help, leading him to patch up Roxy and give Alex some much-needed shelter and purpose.

Both of the MC's were very likeable, so the slow-burn romance puttered along as most slow-burns tend to do, but the pacing felt a tiny bit slow.

By the time I hit the 50% mark, it felt as though the story was ready to wrap up, but there was still half of the book left to go. Not that I was entirely complaining, simply stating an observation of my thoughts.

However, there were a few aspects of the book that I wasn't entirely happy with.

First, the lack of genuine communication was pretty present, followed by the much-dreaded "Big Misunderstanding".
No. Screw you, Alex. I wanted to believe this was more than that, but clearly, it’s not.
Then there was the also-dreaded , of which I'm also rarely a fan.

The previous tension in the first half of the story turned into some genuine angst in the second half (accompanied by some pretty-decent steam), so I'd have to say that I found the first parts of the book more enjoyable.

The guys did get an HFN, with the strong, likely possibility of an HEA, which made me happy, so I'd rate the book at around 3.5 stars and recommend it to fans of canine stories.

This is considered a short read for me and I usually pass on them. But I am a sucker for a dog story since I got my pooch, Sassy. Yes, my little gal's name is Sassy. Trust me, it fits her.

The reason I struggle so badly with short reads is that there is always so much pushed into the story making it feel rushed. I had the opposite struggle with this story. There wasn't enough going on to fill the amount of pages it was. It moved a bit slow with not a lot of development. The book could have been shorter in my opinion since it dragged a bit. There was also a confrontation in the book I felt didn't need to be in there. It was bit OTT for me.

I did enjoy their relationship and liked them together. There was definitely a good foundation that was built between them. The cute pups helped.

All in all it was an enjoyable easy read.

Happy reading dolls! xx

Sweet story, but not particularly impressive, unfortunately.

I think this is one of those stories that could have really benefited from a duel POV. Just being in Vaughn's head made the story feel very one-sided. I never felt like I really understood Alex's side of things and his motivations.

The secondary characters didn't add much to the story, and I didn't like Vaughn's judgy sister. Lots of meh here. The plot was cute and puppies!, but a few sweet dogs and a small-town romance doesn't always equal a win. A few too many insecurities and not enough communication also hurt things.

A sweet story that will work for some readers but I wanted more.

This book frustrated me at times because nothing seemed to be happening for ages. I felt like I'd been reading it for days but I was only at 40%.

There was also one particular incident where I felt the reaction of one of the Mcs was completely out of proportion to the situation but, it fit within the narrative so it wasn't wholly out of character.

Having said both of the above comments, they were my only real niggles about what is, in the main, a sweet festive romance which is filled with interesting characters and a nicely done plot surrounding a veterinarian and a homeless man who is struggling to regain his footing.

There's some good secondary characters and I definitely felt a strong sense of place about the setting and the community in which the story takes place.

This was my first book by this author and I will definitely read more from them as overall I enjoyed this romance.

2★'s = it was ok.

Alright, I have put this off long enough. I finished this book a long time ago and tomorrow is the release so no more procrastinating.

Ugh.

I didn’t like this book very much.

This had all the components of a super sweet, meet and fall in love, second chance romance, but it really wasn’t.

I liked the idea of the story but I didn’t really like any of the characters. None of them. The MCs read like spoiled children and not grown 30 somethings. I think Vaughn was 35. He is a veterinarian and has his own practice but he acted like someone in his late teens/early twenties. I didn’t feel like he had himself or his practice together. He just didn’t read to me like a highly educated professional would read and he sure didn’t act that way either.

Alex I never understood. I kind of get his background and all that but still, as a grown up, I just didn’t understand how he chose to be homeless instead of asking for help or doing ANYTHING for himself. What happened to him didn’t scream live on the street. I really wanted to try to just focus on him getting a second chance, focus on hope, but he came across as so ungrateful and his behavior was just so wrong. Vaughn took him in, a complete stranger, and was trying to help and he treated him poorly. I pretty much ended up just disliking him all together.

I didn’t like the sister, she was so judgy and pushy and not very nice. Even the co-workers didn’t seem full of heart, more judgement.

Too much time went by without any conversation. It was so odd and just didn’t make any sense.

The end made me seriously uncomfortable.

Ugh, really, the whole thing just didn’t work for me, at all.

Bummer because the idea of the story sounded so sweet.

Kim Breyon is a new-to-me author and, I’ll admit, I went into this with a wary eye. But I quickly fell into the story, the slow build of the romance, and the deftly executed narrative. It wasn’t perfect, and there were a few small things that bugged me, but overall this is a solid book.

Vaughn is a kind hearted, hard working man. He has a sister who loves him to pieces, even if she’s trying to set him up with a woman she knows, and a mother who accepts him for who he is. He’s building his practice and he has a small, dedicated staff to help. Vaughn’s the perfect person to flag down when you have an injured dog, and he immediately knows he has to help not only Roxy, but her dad. He’s also bisexual, and I love to see positive bi representation.

I actually really enjoyed the slow, leisurely pace of this story. It was a really even tempo'd read.

When Vaughn rescues a homeless man and his hurt dog from the side of the road, he's overly friendly and offers him a place to stay and a job in return for helping take care of his dog.

Alex has been on the run for months, with Roxy, his dog, the only thing he cares about. But, this stranger is offering to give him a place to stay, food to eat, care for his dog, and work to pay it off. After a while, it seems like it may be too good to be true.

The instant attraction, the easy demeanor, the smooth transitions from strangers to friends to more... it just all flowed so well. There was very little angst until the end. The characters were real and emotional and I really enjoyed reading their story and how it all began.

I felt the major theme throughout was paying it forward, which I really enjoyed. It was a nice touch to both Vaughn and Alex's story, but also the book.

Vaughn and Alex fit together so well and my heart melted for Roxy (the epilogue was super cute).

I could have done without and the conflict at the end was resolved too quickly. All in all a very good read.

I have a feeling I'm going to be in the minority in this one. I thought it was just okay. I felt like some of the character development was lacking, and I felt like I was told instead of shown. I loved Roxy and Noel, though! I have a feeling that Alex's POV might have helped me to help me to feel more connected.

This story was such an incredible emotional rollercoaster, with moments of pure joy and tenderness and other when I was tearing up so much that I felt a huge lump in my throat and was fighting really heart not to openly sob (I was reading with my son next to me, and he teases me mercilessly when I cry for a book…). I don’t know what it is about Kim Breyon’s writing, but she has a way of getting to the reader; I just could feel all of Vaughn’s emotions while he was living them. The only complaint I might have that the whole book is in Vaughn’s POV, and I would have LOVED to know what was going through Alex’s head in some moments (that may just be me, I admit I usually prefer double POV).
This is a story about recovery, a physical one for Roxy, the lovely pug who’s been the centre of Alex’s world for the past years, and an emotional one for Alex, who slowly learns to lower his walls and trust again with the help of Vaughn’s gentleness and love.

Kim Breyon is a confirmed one-click author for me, there’s just something about her books that draws me in and speaks to my heart!

Thanks to the author and publisher via A Novel Take for a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.

This story dealt with some heavy issues, but wasn't overly angsty nor swept them up too easily. I loved Vaughn and his big heart for helping animals and their people and his general need be a caretaker. Roxy was a doll with her own personality - I love pugs.

Alex's homelessness and past were dealt with very realistically. My heart went out for him when we learned his backstory and he wanted to try to take steps to find a job and his own place. Vaughn was a little too close to the situation to realize what was going on at first, but Alex's steps made sense, even if he was a little closed off and was still fighting some self-doubt along the way.

There's a running theme of you can tell the character of a person by how they treat their pets and I think that's so true.

I have been such a fan of Kim’s books since reading Back to You. Her books suck me in with their story and likable characters and this one followed suit

The story is about Vaughn, a veterinarian, who falls in love too fast just to get burned. He has the biggest heart out there. He meets Alex on a dark rainy night, heheh not that kind of book, when Alex is in some desperate need of help. Alex is quiet, mysterious, and so badly hurting.

They were perfect for each other even with some communication hang ups but as Alex starts to reveal what has caused all his pain, you can’t help to feel for what he has been through

Throw in some cute dogs in the mix and what else could you ask for. The book had a great storyline and such sweet guys. I would love to get even little snippets of them in the future

And that epilogue. Oh my. I found myself laughing. I never expected that.

First of all! If you've got a soft heart like me when it comes to animals...then you need to know that a beloved pet dies in this story. Now, it's not the pet in the title, but it's a moving scene none-the-less...and I know that some folks can't read things like that. It's written respectfully and ... the main character is a vet so it's not unexpected.

Now, on to the review! I really enjoyed this story. Vaughn is out one night when he comes across a man and his injured dog. Vaughn knows he can help the dog...he's a vet... and he's the kind of person who believes that everyone deserves second chances. Once he realizes that Roxy the pug is going to be okay... tries to understand what is going on for Alex.

It's clear that Alex has been through a lot. He's clearly homeless and seems to care more about his dog than he does about himself. Vaughn is moved to continue to help Alex. He offers him a place to stay while he takes care of Roxy's recovery from her broken leg.

The interaction between these two characters reads as natural and lovely. I really enjoyed the progression of their relationship. Breyon doesn't give up all the details about Alex's past quickly which makes him intriguing. It is clear early on that Alex is putting a less-than-perfect relationship behind him...he's got walls up. While Vaughn falls quickly, Alex is on the other end of the spectrum and seems to resist becoming involved in a new relationship.

I always appreciate authors writing characters who have experienced domestic violence. It's a terrible thing to have to go through and there are so many issues that arise because of it. The author manages to describe the challenge it can be to be supportive to someone without taking over their decisions. Vaughn is very caring... but he can be a bit overbearing when it comes to Alex. The push and pull between them seemed realistic and I enjoyed going along for the ride with them.

And the dogs were adorable! They had it all figured out from the beginning!

A strong 4-stars from me! I'm looking forward to reading more by this author!

A wonderful new winter romance from Kim Breyon.
Right off the bat I fell in love with Alex purely from his love for his injured dog and what he's willing to do for her. He's had a really hard time for the past few years but more so the last several months where he's been homeless. Fate brings Vaughn, a vet to him as he waves down the next car that drives past after Roxy, the pug, is hit by a car. It's pouring rain and Alex is intense in his need for help but that doesn't stop Vaughn noticing the haunted look in his eyes and also how beautiful he is.
My heart broke for Alex and the things he's experienced though these are revealed slowly to the reader as we go through the story as he is very slow to trust someone. Vaughn is the balance as he shows kindness, patience and a willingness to be open. They do make a quick connection and attraction is obvious on both sides though w just read from Vaughn's POV. It feels like a slow burn romance on an emotional level as the two men dance around their past and present whilst there is a time limit on their future. There's a bit of drama as they fail to talk things through and Alex stands up for what he thinks he needs.
I so enjoyed reading Alex and Vaughn's story. So many cute animals, lots of heat and cute moments between two adorable men with a fair bit of drama thrown in! Absolutely a recommended read for me.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

*I voluntarily read this book. All opinions stated are solely my own and no elses*

This is the first book I’ve read by this author and it definitely won’t be my last.

This book made me laugh, smile and even cry.

Vaughn and Alex’s story was sweet despite their ups and downs.

Alex was broken, maybe not physically but without a doubt, emotionally. The author slowly yet gradually revealed things about Alex’s past and it was done flawlessly, without being dragged out. Alex shut away the world and focused on the one girl that mattered the most, Roxy. His love and devotion towards Roxy warmed my heart. One part that made me laugh and smile was when Alex strapped Roxy up in a sling and carried her around - my heart literally melted - could this guy get any cuter?

The interactions between Alex and Vaughn were realistic and down to earth. Alex came out of his shell when he was good and ready and the author took her time developing his character without rushing his recovery.

Alex and Vaughn had great chemistry and I enjoyed watching them steal glances at each other. The author built up the heat perfectly; it wasn’t rushed, it was gradually drawn out until Alex finally made his move.

My favourite part was definitely Vaughn listening to an audio story. He got busted by Alex touching himself and the “moans” and “dirty talk” that followed on the audio that was still playing, didn’t exactly help lol - talk about mortifying lol.

Roxy and Noel were the main dogs the story focused on and they stole my heart with their antics. The demon cat was an interesting addition to the brood.

Fantastic story and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The beginning of this book made me so, so sad. My heart hurts for Alex. But I LOVED this book so much. One of the sweetest stories I've ever read.

This is a story about Alex and Vaughn.

Alex is homeless, jobless and very lonely. After he finally leaves his abusive boyfriend, he doesn't have a place to go so he ends up on the streets with his dog named Roxy. Roxy gets hit by a car and at that moment, Vaughn finds them. I loved Alex so much, he's so sweet and kind, even after everything that's happened to him. Yeah, he's still insecure and I don't blame him for not trusting Vaughn or for standing up for himself. He needed some time to heal, but he is still a man with the biggest heart who cares about his dog very much.

Vaughn is a vet who one night finds Alex on the street and immediately feels the connection between them. He only wants to help Alex, so he offers him his place so he can take care of Roxy for as long as he needs to. I really loved Vaughn too. He's sweet and caring and absolutely smitten with Alex from day one.

Reading about these two sweet souls falling in love made me so happy. I loved every other character too, they were all really supportive.

I received an ARC from A Novel Take PR, thank you!

Roxy’s Recovery by Kim Breyon…. WOW… just WOW!

This book grabbed my heart from almost the opening words and by I think chapter 2 I was in tears (and I don’t cry often when reading).

The story of Vaughn and Alex was beautifully done. Alex’s pain and hurt was tangible but more importantly so well done as him being slow to open and share perfectly suited the character crafted.

The use of Vaughn’s sister added to the story but it wasn’t drama for drama, the author pulled it off as genuine care and love.

Alex slowly opening up, Alex’s work ethic all had me wanting to reach into my kindle and hug him.

I will say the why Alex was on the streets may make some readers really think about how they judge others and the perception of those who might just need a helping hand; I am not going to say more though I will add more as it relates to some stereotypes about abuse and gender this really pulls at the reader. I am going to say anymore because I am to let the reader feel all the feels and have their heart broken and repaired by this new to new author.

The use of the animals in this book is so perfect especially for a Vet and man who when we meet feels the only thing that will even love him is his pug, Roxy.

I know without a doubt this family has their forever happy!

Oh the epilogue….. I must mention that because it was pure perfection!

Despite this book featuring abuse, bullying, and metal illness, it actually came across as a sweet read.

Vaughn was a knight in shining armour, what he did for Alex was wonderful. At first I wondered why Alex was so standoffish after Vaughn's good deed, but once I got to know him better, I understood his reasoning.

Both men are well matched. Alex has been hurt very badly and has gone through so much, Vaughn was just what he needed. I enjoyed the way Vaughn never pressurised Alex, and encouraged him to grow and develop his self confidence in his own good time.

One of the best things in the book for me personally were the dogs, Roxy and Noel. I absolutely love pooches and their antics. Roxy was a little star the way in which she tried to look out for Alex. It was almost like reading two stories in one, following the growth of Alex and Vaughn's relationship, alongside that of the dogs!

To be honest I did find the book a little wordy, and felt that the story could have been wrapped up sooner. I also would've liked to have read more from Alex's point of view. However, all in all, a sweet read, with some misunderstandings between the two MCS, but those soon overcome to give our heroes and their dogs a happy ending. 3 and a half stars.

✮ (¸.•´Loved Roxy's journey!

It started with a rescue and ended with love. I truly enjoyed these men's story and the difficulty it took to get to ever after. Vet Vaughn was one to wear his heart on his sleeve. Alex, homeless and hurting, needed a tender heart. Saving man and dog opened Vaughn to what could be and showed Alex that he could actually have it all.

With slow romance, sweet heat and animals, this book took on a life of its own and kept me interested. Though some angst made an appearance, Vaughn and Alex needed to meet in the middle and know that each had his issues, but that could be resolved.

The only downside was that I would have liked to have Alex's POV in order to feel him. Otherwise, good story.

I voluntarily and honestly reviewed this book without bias or persuasion from the author through LesCourt.

I was given a copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

Sexy men and adorable dogs are pretty much everything I need in a romance novel. This is the story of a sexy vet who picks up a homeless hitchhiker with a wounded dog. Patching up Roxy’s leg turns out to be the easy part - her owner’s scars cut much deeper. This is a sweet and gentle read about the relationship that slowly builds between Vaughn and Alex while Roxy recovers.

I love dogs in romance writing and Noel and Roxy are wonderful. I actually fell for each of Vaughn’s patients - the author brings the animals to life beautifully. The men in this story are pretty great too. Vaughn’s maybe a little bit too saintly for my tastes but it’s impossible to dislike the selfless vet. Alex’s secrets kept my attention and I loved the slow build romance between the men.

This is a relatively low heat, slow burn romance. It’s kinda an m/m romance novel version of a Hallmark movie. A little bit of troubled back story, a tiny bit of miscommunication and a whole lot of personal growth. It’s a gentle, easy read that made me feel warm and happy.

This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I found it very enjoyable.
It was well written and moved along at a good pace. It was easy to connect with the story and the two likeable main characters. There was a dash of angst and there were a couple of emotional spots that brought a tear to my eye.

Vaughn is the town veterinarian and Alex is a homeless man passing through the small town in Idaho, until circumstances means he needs to stay for awhile.
Alex has tattoos, is kind, hardworking and filled with pain. Vaughn is busy with his clinic, has a huge heart and gets burned by falling in love too quickly.

Both of them are really sweet and good natured but they do have to overcome some miscommunication issues before they get their HEA. As a side benefit, we get to meet their really gorgeous dogs who are are deserving of side character status, especially with the very original epilogue.

My first story from Kim I will be reading more of her novels. A masterful combination of raw emotion, abuse, bullying and mental health, descriptively written, had substance, loveable characters including pets and a slow burn romance. At times there was a lack of communication between Vaughn and Alex, which was frustrating. I loved the intimate scenes very hot.

I voluntarily reviewed an arc of this book for my honest opinions of which I’m under no obligation to do so. I honestly recommend this book.

This is the first book I've read by Kim Breyon and I'm so glad I discovered her!

The plot is tight, the characters admirable but flawed (aren't we all!), and the animals precious. When one vet steps in to help an injured animal, he had no idea he'd be helping the owner, and himself. But love has a wonderful way of weaving its self into our lives and making each day more precious. Snow helps too!

Of course we have to learn to trust. To communicate. To ask questions and not just assume. And to step back and let each other grow.

Give this book, and author a chance. You won't be disappointed!

I received an ARC from the author.

Vaughn has a huge heart. When he sees a man that needs help with is dog on the side of the road and in the rain, he knows he has to stop and help.

Alex is quiet, mysterious, and closed off. Vaughn tries to get him out of his shell and slowly Alex starts letting his walls down. But when he starts standing on his own, he begins to question if he should be with Vaughn or learn to live on his own for awhile.

This is a low angst read with two fun dogs as supporting characters. One man falls too hard, too fast. And the other is hesitant to fall in love again.

This was my first time picking up a Kim Breyon book and while I wasn't a fan of some of the romance bits, I really enjoyed the characters and the animals. Readers should note that there are some heavy topics surrounding the story that could be a bit difficult for some.

Vaughn was a really sweet guy who took a chance on someone who needed help... the fact that this wasn’t for Alex, but his injured dog, helps in the decision

Alex is a man with a past he's running from, and willing to do whatever needs doing for his beloved pet. I wasn't a fan of how closed off he could be, but understood why.

Overall, I have to say I think Roxy was my favorite part of this book! I loved her and her loyalty to Alex.

I cannot wait to dive into more of Kim's books soon!

I love reading books that feature pets in the supporting cast. The love of pets is unconditional and can be the difference in keeping hope and falling into despair. We see this especially with Alex. This was a sweet and low angst book with two special pets as supporting characters. Anyone looking for a book where dogs play a strong role, look no further. And for the record, I loved the epilogue! Thanks Kim Breyon!

Cute read, fast paced and adorable dogs.

While the story was nice and I could get behind Alex’s problems, I found that the development of it all was a little bit rushed and left me feeling very confused.

I didn’t care much for the romance, but I did care for the well-being of the characters AND THE DOGS.

The story goes like this: Vaughn is a vet who works too much and who finds a man on the streets after his dog was hit by a vehicle. Obviously he helps and finds out that Alex (the guy on the streets) cannot afford to pay for his dog’s treatment. They make a deal in which Alex will work for Vaughn in the clinic to maje it more welcoming. Sparks start to fly...

Vaughn wants to know why Alex was living on the streets and starts to push a little bit too fast.

But yeah, like I said. It’s an enjoyable book but left me with more questions than answers.

Vaughn is a veterinarian. One night in a rainstorm he stops for a hitchhiker. Alex’s dog Roxy had been hit by a car. He takes them both to his clinic where he can plainly see Alex is homeless. After examining the dog he knows her injuries aren’t life threatening. Feeling sorry for Alex he offered a solution to both the man and his dogs problems. Become the handyman the clinic needs until the dog’s injuries heal. Vaughn’s dog Noel gets in on the act too. At first standoffish she soon become fond of Roxy. This is when Vaughn realizes both him and his dog have been living a very lonely life.

Sweet story about two dogs and their men. Sort of a slow burn. It’s not angst free but it was still a happy book. Without a lot of background information this book still managed to be a complete story. I like the authors style of writing. The epilogue was great.
