Magical story that includes fun adventure in the ocean learning about sea creatures. Short chapter book. Wish it had pictures or perhaps photos at the end of the book of the sea creatures that the children encountered with a few more additional science facts for readers who want to dig deeper. Geared for 2nd - 3rd grade readers.
Two kids go to a magical junk yard/antique shop and have a wonderful adventure under the sea. No Yellow submarines though. Pretty entertaining for children.
It looked so cute, but it was such a disappointment. I preread my children’s literature and at 25 of 100 pages, the author has the kids lie to their parents. Authors, please stop having kids lie or run away from their loving parents and good homes. Kids do it in real life, so they need all the positive role modeling they can get in this world. It was completely unnecessary in this story and didn’t do anything for the plot either. Lying is damaging and if there were children in a junk yard and the parent said “don’t play here because it’s dangerous” then that’s a reasonable request for their safety. Unnecessary lying like this cultivates poor character and defiance for selfish reasons. So far, I would say a lot of children’s literature involve kids lying to their loving parents. If you would like a book like this, but with better character, try Zoey Sassafras. The author deliberately punctuates how a child can have safe fun, loving parents, and do both without lying.
This is the second book I've read by Tevin Hansen and this was as good as the first. Eli and Grace have another amazing adventure starting in Uncle Larry's store. This time they're in the ocean where they experience some of the sea's fantastic life. It's a great way to introduce youngsters to both science and the pleasures of reading. I won a copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway for this honest review.
This is a fun read for the 3rd grade boy. Part Adventures in Odyssey, part Magic Tree House, the adventure engages the imagination with characters we like. The writing flows well for reading aloud without feeling like it is avoiding words that are too difficult.
