Losing all her skills and stats after her deification has left Kumoko weaker than the average handbag, relegating her to luggage status. This couldn't have come at a worse time because the Demon Lord's party is about to come under attack by another reincarnation who's become a demon berserker!
So, post-house spider in a LitRPG, now a weakling god.
There are worse story-fixes, I guess, but it's kinda weak. Still, it's continuing to be fairly amusing, so I'm getting into the stories of one of the other missing kids -- an Oni.
I read this in a few hours, I miss reading books. All I do these days are read textbooks or Chinese webnovels lol.
Warning, this is part 1 of 2, and it takes place 2 years after the previous vol!
We finally learn Wrath's backstory, which was pretty messed up. I find it interesting how so many of the characters are interconnected and that the indirect consequences of their actions can change the lives of people they never know. The bk does a really good job showing that because A happened, B happened, which lead to C happening, etc. When I think of all the unintended consequences that happened as a result of Oka telling P about reincarnators I jus want to sigh, and smack her "I'm their teacher" out of her lol.
Looking forward to how things get resolved, it seems almost hopeless for one character, but we already saw in the future chpts said character is fines so I'm really interested in how that happened.
In the end, this series always makes me feel good, not sure why, just does.
I’ve gotta say, I’m really enjoying seeing things fleshed out more in these recent volumes. I think focusing more on White and the rest of the Demon Lord party instead of hopping from the spider story to the human story and back again really allows for more character development to occur. We get to see Sophia, as well as Ariel, the Demon Lord herself, and of course White grow.
Sophia I think, is one of the more interesting of the bunch. She has so much she;s dealing with, not only from her past life, but the current one as well: she was bullied and ridiculed daily back in her past life, and in this one, she’s had basically her entire world ripped from her, apart from Mera. To see how that affects how…it’s tough. Not to mention how her upbringing might not have been the best, though I suppose nature vs nurture could also be looked at here. We know how she ends up due to the “S” stories about the other incarnations, but seeing how she ends up the way she does is wild. Being raised by White, Ariel and Mera turns out to be quite the combo it seems.
Speaking of White, with her now being a god and having a fully human form, her life is tougher than ever. And that’s saying something! She’s spent most of her life in fear of death, always on the verge of being killed, and now she’s back to living like that. She isn’t able to even be on her feet long enough to walk down a long road without succumbing to exhaustion, which is a far cry from her being able to outrun enemies dead set on killing her. It’s such a surreal thing to see: A nigh invincible monster that goes from being able to defeat most of her enemies with no effort, to not being able to even walk for an extended amount of time. let alone fight. Even little Sophia is able to do more than her.
I honestly never thought the day would come where she was so underpowered!
Aside from White’s trials as a weakling, we get to see more of the behind the scenes things happening with a younger Ms. Oka, and her quest to gather the reincarnations, the battles between the adventures and the “antagonist” of this Volume. Funny thing is, that antagonist, and I do say that very loosely, is one of those reincarnations: Sasajima Kyouya, the Oni that’s been wreaking havoc this Volume. You can’t help but feel for him the more you learn about his situation and the life he’s lived. I’m interested to learn how things pan out from here with how things wrapped up…
My thoughts on "So I'm a Spider, So What?" (蜘蛛ですが、なにか?) Vol 8
Written by Okina Baba Art by Kiryu Tsukasa
Thanks for reading my reviews until this point, I've finally caught up to the English release and it was a pretty enjoyable ride to binge read all 8 volumes in a week.
The story: So this volume Kumoko and the gang have to cross a very dangerous mountain to basically get to demon country. The volume has a new very important (?) narrator, another reincarnation that reincarnated as an ogre, and damn did he had a very bad time.
(spoilers ahead) So this volume is 2 whole years after last volume and Kumoko lost all of her powers when that UFO fight, so mostly all of her chapters this volume are about how being even weaker than a human in a fantasy world is. (End of spoiler)
The verdict: Apart from the fact that this volume didn't really have a conclusion (and nothing was actually resolved) the rest was very enjoyable and fun to read, I'm really looking forward to vol 9 to see how things with ogre-san wrap up 8/10
I agree with the other low score reviews. This chapter is just unnecessary filler. It feels like every other page mentioned how strong the demon lord is or how pervy the vamps are for each other. Really dissatisfied this book should not exist in the series.
This is an interesting one, and there are two reasons for that.
The first is the newbie goddess, Shiraori, experiencing the growing pains of her new divinity. She hasn’t been this powerless since she was a tiny Taratect, and even then she had high speed and spider abilities. But this time, she’s not alone. She’s basically being doted on by her grandmother, and protected by her cousins. Which is super cute. Her character arc here is trying to figure out how to use her old skills without assistance from the system.
The second major plotline for this volume is the re-introduction of Wrath (a.k.a Kyouya). We’ve seen him as part of the Demon Lord’s council in the “present” timeline, so to speak, but we don’t see much of him. Here, it stands to reason why he and Shin have grown so far apart. He might have gotten the worst deal out of all the reincarnators. Also, that was an interesting set-up for the goblin society. Seriously, this takes the idea of goblins being small-and-weak humanoid creatures and does interesting things with them.
All of this ties with the higher-level political stuff with the Word of God religion basically dominating any sort of information war.
Trickster Eric Novels gives So I’m a Spider, So What volume 8 an A+
Overall a good entry to the series, but I can't help comparing it to the web novel so have a hard time judging it on its own.
I like the changes made, especially the fleshing out of several characters and events, but I also feel like some of the Oni story was cut/shortened and feels rushed. On the other hand, it's been years since I read this part in the web novel, so I may be conflating Oni chapters from later on (Shun timeline, the Demon war, the Elf war, etc.). I also feel like Shiro is weaker than she was in the web novel, which is ok, just a little frustrating. Then again, it's also totally within her character; I'd just have preferred to have seen her putting some effort into training her magic and abilities again, rather than just her brief references to it.
So, I enjoyed it and thought it was a great entry to the series. Just conflicted due to expectations having come from the web novel.
The story changed quite a bit since the first volume and that's not a bad thing. It's certainly frustrating to see White be THAT terrible at communication, but I get that it's part of a character. It was a bit hard to get through this one for me. Before, I liked the short random character interludes that went for a couple pages. But now it just really feels like trying to dredge through a swamp. I just wanna know more about White and her journey and don't particularly care about anyone else. It was still a fun book to read though and it's more of a personal issue, I think. So take time to decide for yourself how you feel about it.
Kumoko (White) is there, but she doesn't feel like the center anymore. The world really screwed over that summoner dude. Who's this series even about anymore? If the author hadn't teased her powers coming back, I wouldn't be in. It was kinda funny to hear from Ariel about what the seven deadly sins skills do to their users.

It's way too good. Especially Goblin/Oni and White's part. And Vampy too. Her jealousy was pretty funny. Some of the minor characters have amazing character moments, including one of our puppet spiders.
Better than the last in my opinion. I hoped to see more White progress, I miss the early days of constant improvment, but it was overall a really enjoyable reading with some welcomed explanations and interesting developments.
I cannot in good faith give these books 4 starts even though I eat them up as if they were. This is by no means the most innovative, exciting, and well written book series you will encounter yet I cannot help but keep going.
It was fun to see our MC live life as a weakling after all that time as a strong being. And watching how other reincarnations got to the point they were at (mindset-wise) in the current day is also interesting to watch.
A genuine pearl of the Genre! Great fun to read! Plot complexity: 5* Suspense & Plot twists: 5* Consistency: 4* Humor: 4* Character depth: 4* Literary aesthetics: 2* Literary depth: 1*
