Oh my word, if you want to be annoyed listen to this book on audible. The reader drags the words out “the eeeliiixiiierrr” so much! Oliver the hero is 11 and talks about true love and how everything is the worse thing to ever happen to him, he’s 11!! I will not punish myself anymore with this series. You’re welcome.
This is book 3 of the Oliver Blue and the School for Seers series. It's is a fun, easy to listen to, fantasy series with lots of magic and action and epic quests. As an adult I think I'm bothered more by the plot holes and weird arcs than I think I would be if I was the intended audience. I'm having the most trouble believing the 11year old main character could be so in love (in basically a love at first sight scenario) he'd be willing to risk as much as he does in this book.
I really enjoy the story line and fantasy aspect of this book. I find that I struggle to like Oliver. I know he’s a preteen, but he is portrayed as much older and gosh he can be annoying. I also feel that in this book things were overstated. Such as Professor Amethyst as Oliver’s mentor… yes, yes we know that - this is the third book… we get it. It’s mentioned when Oliver thinks of Prof. Amethyst. There are also some uncanny similarities to the Harry Potter series as well. Pressing on to book 4.
What worked: Oliver has been having issues with his brother Chris since the series began. Chris loved to bully Oliver at every opportunity, but his anger and fury have increased with every page. The second book saw Chris recruited by the Obsidians, a school using dark magic to upset history, and he was sent on a mission to kill Oliver. His failure has put Chris into an uncontrollable rage, and this book sees him traveling back in time to end Oliver’s life. Plus, Chris now has received training with his dark powers, so he rivals Oliver’s abilities and is even more formidable than before. Each book in the series finds Oliver traveling back in time to maintain the integrity of historical events. This time, he goes back to meet Leonardo Da Vinci and Michelangelo in order to finish the recipe for a magical Elixir, although his motivation is saving Esther from dying due to time-travel sickness. It just so happens that creating the Elixir and saving her life will also save history and the future existence of everyone on earth. Oliver is always helped by other seers and minor characters from the past. Every moment in time has a school for seers, and they’re always stepping up to help Oliver uncover clues for his mission. The story reveals another famous person in history who was secretly a seer. Additionally, the author introduces the possibility that a seer might have been corrupted and is working with the Obsidians. Obviously, this adds another layer of conflict and doubt to Oliver’s quest, as he questions the motivations of some allies. By the way, the truth about Oliver’s parents is finally revealed. What didn’t work as well: This book is the third in the series, and you should read the previous two books first. They explain the seer powers and how things have evolved to this point. Many sequels in other series recap previous events from earlier books, but The Obsidians assumes readers already have important knowledge from the past. The Final Verdict: The search for an Elixir to save mankind. Readers should read the series from the beginning, as this book continues the tale. Lovers of history, science, and magic should enjoy this book.
It's amazing how Morgan Rice continues to captive her audience. Her book are a readers marriage made in heaven. Great series that doesn't take forever to get to the subject matter. I'm sure that it Morgan Rice books were offered to an individual that claims to hate reading; they would sing a different tune. She ranks up the with the best fantasy authors. Robert Jordan, Terry Brooks, Terry Goodkind, Raymond Fiest, Anne Rice and Morgan Rice not particularly in that order. If the satisfaction of finishing a book is important to you as a reader Morgan Rice is your best choice to start with. Short chapters that demand the readers attention. At less she has kept me as a faithful patron...
Oliver Blue and his companions are searching for the Elixer to save Elizabeth’s life. It takes them through portals into other times as they track clues and meet unexpected people. Everywhere they are go they are pursued by Oliver’s step-brother Chris and his dark seer team, who are bent on killing Oliver and assuming control of the universe.
This book is a suspenseful and exciting read. It keeps you on the edge of your seat! I received a free copy but my review is honest and voluntary. I couldn't put it down until I finished it!
This is a good sequel that features Oliver Blue in yet another thrilling storyline full of magic, combat, and love. He and his group of friends travel back in time to 16th century Italy in order to craft the Elixir which will save girlfriend Esther's life. They are upheld by the Obsidians, a group of dark magic students from a competing school, and Oliver once again has to face his brother Chris.
The appearances of Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci are a bit farfetched, but it's an enjoyable read nevertheless.
The story line on this one just fell a bit boat. It was still a bit interesting to want to know what the book has but it’s not exciting and the action is just meh. The second book did so much better to give you the excitement during the action and keep you at least slightly captivated. I can honestly say I don’t remember parts of this because my brain got a bit bored. I’ll be finishing off the series because there is something just interesting enough at the end that made me want to know how it ends.
This series, while I get that it's geared towards a younger audience, got less and less interesting for me over time. I like the blending of elements that are clearly borrowed from other novels--such as His Dark Materials--but the simplistic driving forces on the characters eventually got old (that is to say, Oliver makes very few of his own decisions and a lot of what he does is entirely motivated by "follow the plot") and so with this third one, I'm putting the series down.
I quit a third of the way through this book, although I did read the first two books to the end. This one was just too much. An 11 year old that is thoroughly in love? Everything repeated over and over (How much does Chris hate his brother, Oliver? How impressed is Oliver with Professor Amethyst?). I know the book is written for younger readers, but even they don't need to be told over and over and over and over...
The storyline is good, this telling of the story is not for me.
OMG. Another smash for Morgan Rice. This book was an amazing experience. Just takes the series up another notch. It seems to be like a fine wine it just keeps getting better and better. Mrs Rice might want to beware soon people will be mentioning her and JK Rowling in the same sentence. Truly a must read can not wait to read the next installment. If you like fantastic books check it out.
This book is really amazing. The characterisation is awesome. Chris had shown compassion even though for a second. Oliver got jealous of the parallel Oliver, gave him more common human feelings. There is always a vivid and beautiful description of the place, they are in. Each character has their own importance.

A fun and brilliant read. Will keep you hooked till the end. The way all the characters are potrayed and they also bring to life the great men of our history is something worth the read. Spectacular!
This book 3 of the series sees the characters developing their own stations in life and as well the suspense and story line begins to take on a life of its own. This book is full of action, suspense, historical tidbits added in (which I love and find fascinating), and keeps you wanting to read more as each chapter ends. A truly good book.
