Mai sottovalutare i libri per ragazzi, seppur semplici possono far scoprire molte cose interessanti e sconosciute anche agli adulti.
Ho comprato questo libro perché sono stata sempre affascinata dai "nasi" degli animali; ovviamente è un libro per un pubblico molto molto giovane ma i disegni e le nozioni che sono comprese nei capitoletti che illustrano quanto in ogni ambito naturale (difesa, riproduzione, fame etc.) sia fondamentale il senso dell'olfatto sono veramente belle ed interessanti!

ABSOLUTELY FASCINATING! Such interesting (and less familiar) and up close facts about different noses. Did you know that a dog's nose is separated into two compartments - one to breathe and the other to smell? That mother ewes spend a lot of time licking her newborn to clean it but also to memorize its smell which becomes an "access code" for feeding? Or that mosquitoes can locate us because they smell the carbon dioxide we breathe out?

Figueras' writing is clear and kid-friendly but doesn't shy away from describing the technical aspects of noses and using relevant vocabulary (e.g., pheromones, odorant molecules, olfactory membrane).

Love the large format and layout and design of this book. It's organized into sub-topics (e.g., newborn scents, sniffing out a meal, stink to impress). There are flaps students can look under to learn even more. De Gastold's illustrations are very appealing. Students can look at this over and over again, picking up new fascinating facts to share with friends.

I'd READ ALOUD in bits and pieces to 2nd-6th grade students and then leave in the classroom library to be snatched up.

First published in 2019 in France, this browser book was translated into English and simultaneously published in the U.K. and the U.S. later that year.

Filled with flaps to lift, The Nose Knows is filled with trivia about the noses of many different kinds of animals from around the world - many times comparing them to human noses. Pheromones are discussed as a way that animals communicate to each other. Also covered are shapes and names of noses, which animals have the best "sniffers", what newborns smell, different ways animals use their sense of smell to find food (including mosquitoes), importance of stinkiness in nature, how they find their way home, and use smell to stay out of trouble. Each page on this oversize browser covers a topic in a paragraph or two, with excellent illustrations by Claire De Gastold extending the message.

Well constructed, this will keep curious minds reading cover to cover.

This is a fascinating book about the different ways different animals smell and what they use their sense of smell for (avoiding detection, attracting a mate, finding their way, etc.). My preschoolers in story time enjoyed it, but I only read them about 3 spreads and picked and chose what parts of each spread to read and focus on. It's huge and has great illustrations so it's wonderful for reading to a group. It's a good nonfiction book to use to illustrate to parents how to read picture book nonfiction with really young children (e.g. you don't have to read every word on every page, or even every page - just pick what looks interesting and enjoy it!).

Review: I found this book really cool because it had elements that you don't always think about in your life. Learning about how different animals can be really helpful to the students that are super interested in animals. Going through all of the different areas in which animals can smell is super interesting because a lot of us don't think about how it can be different from our own noses. I also think that this book would be great in an elementary school setting because it allows creativity and the students learn more about the animals they have come to love!

Incredibly intriguing! This book was so fantastic and its use of its pages and illustration. The topic of the book itself is so unique and really it's a niche that I think a lot of young readers would really appreciate and grow to love. I especially like how you can lift the flaps to learn about some
of the wild methods animals use to communicate with each other using their noses, antennae, and scent glands.

There is so much cool information in this book. It's presented in bite-sized pieces whether that's in a box near the top of the page, the strips at the bottom, or on the back of a flap.

The illustrations seem very true to life, but somehow still more fun than technical.

I recommend this 2019 book a lot to older readers (approx 7-10 yrs.), interested in animals and some who request ‘pop-up books.’ This ‘lift-the-flap’, informational text is a thorough, beautifully illustrated account of animals and their sense of smell. Bite size, detailed amounts of information, together with vibrant illustrations make this over-sized book full of facts and fun! Clean layout with bold headings; great use of white space opposite a page with a different animal(s) against a colorful habitat, make this book far less overwhelming than it could be. With humor and the element of surprise which lift-the-flap (and pop-up) books can bring, Nose Knows is all the more engaging as a result. With a Table of Contents, Index and “Selected Sources.”

This one would be a 3.5 for me, and I loved all the flaps that were available for me to lift in order to learn even more about the topic as well as the large, colorful illustrations. The book's content is exactly what its title indicates: It provides an overview of the sense of smell and how various animals smell. Obviously, noses come in all shapes and sizes, but it is worth noting that humans are low on the totem pole when it comes to smell with elephants having the keenest sense of smell. It was interesting to read about how parents and their offspring bond through scent and how animals can use this sense to locate food or to attract a mate. For those who are plagued by mosquitoes, there's even a short section about the preferences for certain bacteria smells that various mosquitoes have. Every page has something noteworthy, and the entire design of this oversized book is attractive. Readers will be curious to learn even more, and the helpful index serves as quick reference point for anyone just interested in getting a taste of this topic. This one would be another good choice for those interested in building a science classroom library.

Fun book for kids that describe how scent is used by animals. We as modern city dwelling humans can't really appreciate the extent to which smell is used by other creatures. Fun pictures and lift up flags maps it tantalizing for kids.
