okay, this one is great—it's one of those WHAT IF __ WAS REALLY __ kind of stories or one of those times where you're watching a true crime documentary that's suddenly lovecraft. i guess the takeaway here is...give serial killers the benefit of the doubt?
A twisted tale of sacrifices and obligations - and how they can be misinterpreted outside of their origins. It's a story that will make you think, though the conclusions are not for the squeamish. For that matter, the story isn't either.
The first 'story' I really liked in this anthology (the Brian evenson one doesn't count), this is an imaginative spin on the Serial Killer trope that manages to enter pure lovecraftian territory. The real beauty in this story is, to be honest, it's ability to move from small town murders to apocalyptic scenario without seeming forced. It isn't scary but it is horrifying and dark and works on multiple philosophical levels - questioning monotheism along the way. I loved it.
Lots of reviews are praising this story, but to me, the whole concept seems very disrespectful, in several different ways. If this had been the first story I would not have kept going with the anthology.
An interesting twist of a serial cannibal murderer and the ancient Aztec-like god only he knows how to appease - but of course, a modern Wisconsin town wouldn't understand the connection, and their justice just might cost them even more...
Well that escalated quickly (literally). From deranged serial killer to burdened savior. I didn't expect dark gods to make an appearance, but that was a great touch.
