~Gay American Dom with a fabulous sub juggles romance and bondage with Scotland Yard police work.~

When Brian Harrison first met Jackie Vasquez at a Hawaiian wedding, Jackie was sixteen and troubled. Six years later they meet again; Brian’s career at Scotland Yard is budding with promise, while Jackie’s student days at the University of Nebraska are rolling toward a strong finish. Magnetic mutual attraction pulls them insistently toward one another, but the ocean separating their lives makes for a simmering romance.

When the waiting ends and they get together for a weekend in Denver, Dom Brian and sub Jackie both know they’ve tapped into something scalding hot, and much deeper than sharing an artful session. Shibari, lust, and love are all on the agenda -- but for Brian, so is his police career, and a strange series of crimes seems poised to threaten their romance -- and maybe their lives.

Lou Sylvre loves stories and likes to conjure them into books. When the stories are about love, the sweethearts on her pages are most often men who end up loving each other and likely saving each other from unspeakable danger. As if you’d want to know more, she’ll happily tell you that she is a proudly bisexual woman—a mother, grandmother, and cat-herder (with a dog). Her love of languages is no doubt a result of her interestingly mixed up heritage. Her over-the-top love of her rainbow-colored demi-tasse set cannot be adequately explained. She also loves music coffee, chocolate, and wild roses. As a writer, she works closely with lead cat assistant Boudreau St. Clair. Lou grew up in the Los Angeles area, where barefoot was always best for a kid. She now lives in the lush, rainy part of the Pacific Northwest, and hearing from a reader unfailingly brightens the dismal weather. Her email is louwrites@rainbowgate.com.

Bring back that lovin' feelin'
'Cause it's gone...gone...gone
And I can't go on, woah...

Seriously this was my mental sound track as I read this story...

I love the Righteous Brothers. I truly do but nearly 200 pages of the same song running through your brain over and over...well, let's me tell you it gets tedious after a while...actually it gets downright monotonous and dammit even my mental voice doesn't sing near as good as The Righteous Brothers...

Looking at current reviews for this book I'm not sure I shouldn't duck and run as I do this. I've put this off for a couple of days now thinking I might change my mind. If you've seen any of my reviews for the original series that this book spun off of than you know. I loved without reservation the entire series Vasquez and James was such an absolute treat for me. I devoured the books and wallowed in their wonderfulness!!! Apparently I should have quite while I was ahead. I'm thinking maybe I should have stopped there but really how could I? When this was written by an author that is a no questions asked must buy for me.

Unfortunately for me this book failed. The characters were flat. The spark of attraction that seemed to begin between Brian and Jackie in Finding Jackie book 3 of Vasquez & James just wasn't there for me. There were some repetition issues that for me got in the way like the constant repetition of the fact that as well as being in love they both wanted a D/s relationship. This was repeated over and over in various ways but still the same message. It was something that I wanted to feel through their actions and interactions and not simply be told over and over again. There were glimmers here and there mostly towards the end of the story that made me feel potential for these two men but overall it just wasn't enough to save this story for me and to add to all that I found the mystery/thriller aspect of the story to be predictable.

While there were occasional moments that I enjoyed I have to admit that all in all my favorite thing was the cover. I mean seriously look at that cover it's gorgeous and that man is so Jackie. I don't need to look anywhere else for the perfect representation of that character. I desperately wanted the story to be as beautiful as the cover and for me it just wasn't.

At the end of it all. I still love Lou Sylvre's writing and when the next book comes out I'm going to be reading it because one not so great read in my eyes does not make me willing to give up reading an author who has taken me on five very incredible and emotional adventures not to mention creating one of the sexiest m/m couples going.

So, Ms. Sylvre maybe we were more miss than hit this time but I have faith and I'm crossing my fingers that for me the next one is a hit. By the way did I mention how much I LOVE that cover.

2.5 Hearts

The framework of this story is good; it's the fleshing out bits that I took issue with. I chose this book for obvious reasons and those reasons played only a bit part which, I admit, was disappointing, though not my primary quibble. The redundancy and spoon feeding of minutiae is what sapped my enjoyment. I will say if I'd read this book as little as two years ago I likely would've had a very different reaction, so bear that in mind.

A Shot of J&B can be read as a stand alone, though it seemed to be a spin-off of an earlier series involving Luki Vasquez. Brian is living in London and working his way up the ranks of Scotland Yard. Jackie and he met when Jackie was still jailbait. Brian was involved in rescuing him from a sociopath and they both left lasting impressions on one another. They meet up again and carry on a brief long distance relationship prior to Jackie being accepted to a graduate program in London. The secondary thriller storyline involves two women teaming up to study the effects of fear on the human psyche through a series of malevolent "experiments". Both of these women are whackadoodles and it's clear early on who they are and what the end game is which when coupled with the too tidy ending left me wanting.

The good elements to this book are a long haired ginger MC, shibari, MANTIES, thriller aspects, sort of part of a series-all things I like. It came down to the writing style, a writing style I found mostly frustrating and had me skimming frequently.

Example:

He followed his own instructions, took some deep breaths, got himself a glass of water and drank it down, stretched, then sat down with the letter and a pocket knife. He cut the envelope neatly on one end and extracted the paper inside.

There's telling and there's showing and then there's overkill, overkill that usually involved sentences that stretched into paragraphs akin to the above topped off with stilted dialogue.

I will say the sex was medium hot. I could've done with less labeling of power dynamics and I'm not a fan of the sub being cast as perpetually in need of rescue and meek despite protestations to the contrary, but there is no doubt they are hot for each other. Unfortunately, that wasn't enough to sustain my interest in the long run.

A Shot of J&B is the first book by Lou Sylvre that I've read. While I thought this story had potential, I didn't think it was really met. I'd still like to read the series that A Shot of J&B is spun from, just so I can get some background on the characters and where they come from. You don't need to read that series to follow this story, though. A Shot of J&B stands well enough, on its own.

At the start of the book, Brian and Jackie live on different continents. Brian Harrison is working for Scotland Yard, in London, where he has lived for the past 5 years. He left the US after Jackie's rescue in Finding Jackie because he thought he was getting too attached to Jackie and vice versa. Jackie was 16 at the time, and Brian 22. And that is a line that Brian will not cross. Besides, Jackie needed to heal physically, mentally and emotionally from his ordeal. So, Brian went as far away as he could. But now, Jackie is 22 and about to start grad school and he's really come a long way. And when they reconnect, Brian discovers that his draw toward Jackie never went away.

Jackie Vasquez is young, but he's seen things and experienced things that no one of any age should have to endure. But he's strong and he's worked hard to heal and become a healthy young man. Jackie is also fiercely independent and resistant to anything that would take that independence away. But with Brian, Jackie finds that he is willing to give up control - at least to a point. Jackie is a sexual submissive and he not only craves that submission, he needs it. And Brian is his counterpoint, the Dom who matches him so completely.

And I loved that - or the potential of it, anyway. But we're told a lot more than we're shown, unfortunately, and Brian and Jackie seem to go in circles a lot about what they want from each other and their hopes of a D/s relationship. And I don't mean they wavered at all, they really didn't. It's just that they kept repeating it, in some form or another until I just kind of wanted them to get on with it, already.

And when Jackie moved to London to attend grad school, he and Brian never felt so far apart to me. Brian's job was all consuming and while Jackie was busy with school, he was starting to feel like an afterthought. He's young and being in a relationship with a detective takes a lot of fortitude and commitment that maybe Jackie wasn't prepared for. And, to me, their connection suffered. And so did my enjoyment of the story.

There were certainly things I enjoyed quite a lot - I loved Brian and Jackie as characters and as a couple when they were together. I loved that Brian practiced shibari, which can be so very beautiful. I loved Jackie's resilience. I loved that he loved both leather and lace. I even liked the overall story and the thriller aspects, though it was somewhat predictable. Oh, and I would be remiss is I didn't mention just how gorgeous I think the cover is.

But there was a tendency for unimportant tasks, like getting ready for school or bed, or opening an envelope to be vastly over-described and that, along with the repetitiveness of the writing tended to take me out of the narrative a bit. I don't really need the minutia of their day described in great detail just to fill space, and that's how it seemed at times. I think with another round of editing to tighten things up, the story could be a solid 4 - 4.5 stars. But as it stands, I'd give A Shot of J&B an overall 3 stars.

I adore Luki and Sonny and I think maybe Brian and Jackie suffered through comparison. I was eager to read their story and they were a fascinating couple but there wasn't that instant love that I felt for Jackie's uncles. The story seemed quite slow-moving and sedate until very nearly the end when it exploded in to life. I don't know whether there will be more to come from Brian and Jackie but I do have a funny feeling that they could very easily grow on me.

When Lou Sylvre originally offered a ARC of this book for her fans in her Facebook group Sylvre Linings I wasn't going to take her up on it because I had read the original release of "A Shot of J&B". (Which I loved) FORTUNATELY I had sense enough to ask if she had changed anything, or added new content to this version! To which she replied that this version was a greatly expanded version of ONLY the first half of the original, (which was written in 2 parts, you can see this in the blurb of the original found here in Goodreads) And that there will be a expanded version of the second part in a follow up book. So of course I opted to throw my name into the hat for the ARC at that point. (The original Kindle edition was a total of 224 pages for the entire book. THIS edition, only covering part one of the original is 158 Kindle pages long! Do you think Lou will fit the next book, covering part 2 in the remaining 66 pages? NO! This shows how much more information she has added to this part of the story!)
That being said... I think I need to do a 2 part review here. I review for those readers who, like me, HAVE read the original, and a separate review for those who HAVEN'T. (*note: You do not need to read the original book in order to enjoy this one. However if you want to know more about Jackie and Brians background stories which are alluded to in this book, I do recommend reading the 3 book omnibus "Vasquez and James, vol.1" prior to this.)
For myself I would give this book a 5 star rating, but because it may draw readers new to the stories, who may find it a bit confusing, I am only giving it the 4 star rating.

For those readers who HAVEN'T read the original:
This is a beautiful love story between 2 men who reconnect after nearly 6 years since their original very brief meetings. (this book includes the first meeting, and mentions the events of the second meeting, which is told in the Omnibus story Finding Jackie).
In this story Brian is a well defined Dom, (more into Shibari bondage than inflicting pain), with enough experience to make him well able to perceive the needs of each individual sub he encounters, and the care and ability to be able to fulfill those needs.
On the other hand Jackie knows he's a sub at heart, but doesn't have much experience, (has no knowledge of Shibari) and so hasn't defined his needs for himself yet. He really wants to explore this with Brian, as well as getting to know Brian better, who he's been crushing on since their first meeting. (Brian also hasn't been able to get Jackie out of his mind since then either.)
The biggest problem is Brian lives in London, working for Scotland Yard, while Jackie is finishing up as a college student in Nebraska. So their interlude here will eventually end, and they will have to continue their romance long distance, via email and text messages. However since the true focus of this book is about both Brian and Jackie learning about each other as men, as well as setting the stage for the events which will follow in the next book, it works. But because of this, this book DOESN'T end with "happily ever after". Instead it ends with "to be continued".
And this is something the reader really needs to understand. All the content herein regarding the Gaslighter case Brian is working on for Scotland Yard, Jackies hobby of geocaching, and the excerpts about the Professor in England are all building up to the events that will be in the next book. They won't seem to tie in here, but truly are important in giving insight into the next book.

For those who, like me HAVE read the original:
OMG I absolutely LOVE how Lou fleshed out the story here! This is, as I mentioned, only part 1 of the original. So if you're expecting all the exciting action and suspense, kidnappings and chases of the entire original book, DON'T! That all comes along in the second half of the original! (check the blurb for the original and you will understand that!) This book instead basically fleshes out the initial romance between Brian and Jackie, and gives us more information and thus insight into the Gaslighter case, and the antagonist we all know and hate in the second part of the original book! (That part here is both eerie and chilling!) As I said in the above, this book sets us up for the one to follow. I can't wait to see how much more exciting the NEXT book will turn out to be, with all the fleshing out she's going to do there as well! (And dang it Lou, how long will we have to wait?!!) Like I said, for me, this book warrants 5 stars!

WARNING: if you haven't read at least up to book 3 in the Vasquez &James series, this review can be 'spoilerish. Also. This story takes place BEFORE events in 'Because of Jade'. Just to verify up front. This story with Brian and Jackie is 6 years after 'Finding Jackie' and events to do with Jade have NOT taken place yet.

I love that this is going to be its own series, and as with all of Lou's stories, felt like I was wrapped up in a comfortable, handmade blanket that left me feeling warm, cozy, and happy.*sigh*

If you have read the James & Vasquez series, you will recall that we were only given a teasing glimpse of the possibilities of a relationship between Jackie and Brian in 'Finding Jackie'. And, the fact that they both share a kink..except, well, Jackie only has the 'potential' of submission, and Brian, as a fairly new Dom, removes himself from temptation and the innate connection he feels with Jackie upon first meeting him at only 16-yrs-old to Brian's 22-years. And he does it in quite a drastic way. By moving all the way to London to follow his interest in becoming a member of Scotland Yard.

It is good that we see them in the opening chapters meeting after all these years away from each other. After Jackie is no longer 'jail-bait', and has had the loving embrace of his uncle, the rest of his family, and therapy to heal from his trauma. But, can Brian be sure Jackie isn't 'broken', being submissive due to fear and circumstances, not the innate naturalness of a healthy sub?

I love the awkwardness and really sweet way both of these guys reconnect. The first tentative emails, and the way they have to go about getting each other's physical mailing address or cellphone when good ol former 'Boss' and 'Uncle' Luki refuses to give out personal information about anyone! It made me smile...

I enjoyed this story due to the following:

The beauty of more artistic hand-crafting, with Brian beginning to master Shibari (Japanese rope work), and Jackie learning leather-craft. The visuals of this handiwork from both men are so much richer with this, bringing back memories of Sonny with his beautiful handmade dyes and fabric 'paintings' and weaving.

The BDSM element. Pretty light in this story. Which is a good thing in my opinion due to Jackie's past. Appreciated the questioning of how much his submission is a product of abuse or just weakness. I love that it wasn't an unrealistic 'fix' and some effort was put in to the 'why' or possible pre-wiring of a submissive nature even before the 'abuse incidents'.

It was fascinating learning about geocaching. And that it is a hobby many can get into worldwide. I love the description of the clothing, when they prepare to go to a club... The clothes that Jackie wears as a sub (yummmm, self-designed, buttery soft leather corset, and lace), and visualizing Brian as the Dom in black jeans and silk shirt with leather jacket.

The 'Shibari' rope work. It sounds beautiful. And Brian knits and crochets! Yet he is not in any way lessened as a 'manly man' *smiles* And animal lovers will enjoy Marley and his independent ways.

The London foggy, marshy, damp, aged atmosphere gave this story a nice spooky quality, almost like an old gothic horror/suspense novel... images of Jack-the-ripper around the corner, in a dark, dank alleyway. Ooooooh...

This story had all the elements of a good suspense novel. It starts out so that we, the reader, get a glimpse into the making of a criminal mind, then we get to follow both our MCs, and sit in suspense waiting for them to figure out what we, the reader, already suspect.

There were good little twists and turns, and I almost wish it could've been drawn out longer, with more detail, as there seemed to be a few little jumps in events that felt almost cut short, but I most definitely enjoyed this start to a new series, with visits from our previous, well-loved characters, and the light BDSM twist with the possibilities of another generation of sleuths. Most fun! Also, this ends with more of an HFN rather than an HEA, leaving room for more adventures and personal growth with this couple.

Highly recommended!

I’m already a fan of the universe Lou Sylvre has built with her Vasquez and James series so I was excited to learn that she is writing a spin off series featuring characters from that series—Jackie and Brian. I love series, and next generation spin offs.

The title 'A Shot of J&B' works on a couple of levels. It’s not only Brian’s favourite drink, but is also their initials.

As with all of Lou’s work, this was a very smooth and lyrical read. I got sucked into the story and invested in the characters very quickly. Part romance, part detective/action drama, this has a bit of everything but comes together as a very integrated whole.

I also enjoyed the change in location as a lot of the action takes place in the UK, and the research that has gone into the story. While it’s definitely Jackie and Brian’s story, there are still appearances from Luki and Sonny, and the introduction of new characters. I loved Brian’s cat, Marley, and their other new addition to their family—but that one is a spoiler so not mentioning it here. Brian and Jackie’s relationship grows over time although their attraction is immediate, and I thought the way Lou handled it was very believable. Her guys are always very loving, and respect and trust each other—I really like that about them.

Lou certainly knows how to rack up the tension, and the bad guy in this is really disturbing, but realistically so. Like in all good detective stories, the clues were there, but it’s only as things come together that the reader puts it all together, and like Brian, hopes like hell it’s not already too late.

An early night I had planned became a lot later, as I had to keep reading to see what happened next.

Another five star story, and a great start to a new series. More please.

I am sure I will come back and finish this just I need to step away now.
No real spoilers here, the dialogue is killing me with its sugary goodness. So far the story is mostly working within the romance part with small snitches of some evil doer. Its not working for me. I think I'm going to go back and read Loving Luki Vasquez. I feel a disconnect and I can't figure out what/where/how its happening. No rating as I am not completely sure its not me here.

I think this suffered some for me simply because I haven't read any of the series that this was spun off from. The characters were interesting especially Jackie although I felt if I was missing some things about his past that were part of the past series. He was an interesting mix of independent and vulnerable. What I found lacking in the book was the connection between the characters. Brian was working all the time and honestly I didn't get him loving/not loving Jackie as a kid then picking it back up as an adult. I also found the mystery sub plot in this completely bizarre and just didn't fit with the overall story.

Sweet and hot

Jackie, the subject of abuse and kidnap in prior volumes with Luki and Sonny gets his story. He and Brian are shown forging their connection as a D/s couple, very light BDSM, just some bondage. The authors style gives their characters a very polite and formal style of dialogue that doesn’t always feel completely natural but still works for them. I’d recommend reading Finding Jackie before reading this one.

This review and much more can be found at Love Bytes Reviews
This is a truly intriguing start to this series. For fans of the Vasquez & James series, this is a spin-off centering on Jackie, Luki’s nephew and a key character in Book 3 of that series and Brian Harrison, a former colleague of Luki’s. Brian and Jackie met briefly before the main events of Book 3 and this story begins almost 5 years later.

Brian is working for Scotland Yard now and has been living in London. During a Christmas visit to see his family in the US, he makes a visit to see Luki and his husband Sonny. As it turns out, Jackie Vasquez is visiting his uncle at the same time 🙂 Brian has never forgotten the beautiful and intriguing boy who has now grown into a man. If anything Jackie has only become more attractive to Brian. When they see each other again, it’s apparent that Jackie is also drawn to Brian. Jackie is finishing up his undergraduate degree in psychology and he’s done a lot of difficult work in healing from his ordeal. Their attraction is fairly obvious to anyone with eyes 😉 Brian, who has been dabbling in the BDSM scene in London and he rather quickly discerns that Jackie is a natural sub.

When Jackie issues an invitation to Brian to attend his university graduation, Brian is excited to make the trip. Jackie and Brian have communicated during his final semester at university and Brian cannot wait to see Jackie again. He has only one concern – which is Jackie’s habit of geocaching on his own. He’s committed to no longer doing this to give Brian peace of mind. He has a very special graduation gift for Jackie – a trip to Denver for the two of them after the graduation along with a shibari demonstration at a local club. The heat builds between them and they experience a wonderful night together. The idyll of their trip is interrupted by Brian’s case in London and he’s pulled into research. But they have established something much bigger between them.

This new version of this story is really about establishing the relationship between Jackie and Brian now that Jackie is an adult. They have never forgotten each other after the drama of their previous contact. Jackie is ready to move on to an adult relationship. He’s done so much work to heal himself from the trauma that he endured and he’s accepted things about himself. He’s excited to let his relationship with Brian transform to one of equals and he’s equally intrigued with the D/s dynamic of their sexual relationship. He’ still got things to do, but he’s definitely interested in moving forward with Brian. Brian has a demanding job and he’s done well – but he also has a lot more to do. Only time will tell if they will be able to build on this trip and have something more lasting and real as opposed to a vacation tryst. Looking forward with some trepidation as to what comes next – particularly given the sinister aspect of Brian’s case. Recommended and can’t wait for more!

4.5 stars

As a swooning fan of Lou Sylvre’s superb Vasquez & James series, I was very pleased to see her writing a story for Jackie and Brian. Readers first meet these characters in ‘Finding Jackie’, book three of the aforementioned series. ‘A Shot of J&B’ takes place about 6 years after events in ‘Finding Jackie’, but prior to events in ‘Because of Jade’ (the most recent V&J book). This book could be read as a stand-alone, but please, please do yourself a favor and read at least up through ‘Finding Jackie’ in order to experience its full background and emotional impact.

I’m so happy that the author is planning a full series for Jackie and Brian, as this book left me brimming with wonderful warm feelings about their relationship and where it is heading. Lou’s flowing, expressive writing style is something I’ll never tire of. ^_^

A brief synopsis …. Jackie and Brian first met in Finding Jackie. 16 year old Jackie had been kidnapped and 22 year old Brian – who was working at the security firm run by Jackie’s badass uncle Luki – aided in his rescue. Brian was very drawn to Jackie, but due to their age difference and Jackie’s abusive past and recent traumatic experiences, he left for London to potentially pursue a career with Scotland Yard.

This book opens with Jackie and Brian meeting again after 6 years. Brian comes to visit Sonny and Luki on his way home to London after the holidays, not knowing Jackie will be there. This time, his attraction to Jackie hits like a gut punch Brian can’t deny, nor is he able to conceal it from anyone. The best part – Jackie is definitely attracted to Brian too. Their shared ride to the airport becomes a fragile start to a budding relationship. Luki and Sonny are ever on guard for Jackie’s well- being, but never controlling or overbearing. The glimpses of them and the supportive role they play for Jackie were totally in character. Their love for Jackie was a welcome, soothing and familiar balm.

The manner in which Brian and Jackie slowly got to know each other better via e-mails was sweet and revealing. I felt it was a good way for Jackie (who admits to being fragile at times) in particular to initially communicate his feelings, without risking becoming overwhelmed or overly vulnerable. Brian‘s painful awareness of Jackie’s past was of course a good thing, but he also had the responsibility of handling Jackie with care. He was a Dom. He knew Luki would have his hide if he didn’t proceed cautiously. He had a club in London where he was comfortable interacting. Did he really want more? Did Jackie want to be his sub? The answer to both questions was – yes. As earnest as the situation with the guys was, I still got a good giggle over Sonny covertly supplying phone numbers and addresses to the pair of them. Humor is genuinely interspersed with great effect throughout the story.

Jackie happens to be studying forensic psychology. Given his history of past abuse and trauma, I was intrigued as to how that would plausibly come together, with a D/s

relationship added on top of it all. My faith in the author was proven out. First of all, Jackie at his core is a very strong person. He is never portrayed as a weakling, nor is Brian portrayed as his savior or someone Jackie is dependent on. Luki even tells Jackie he may very well be the strongest person he’s known. Jackie also confides that he’s held submissive tendencies since he was an adolescent, pre-dating any abuse. I felt re-assured by this, as did Brian. There was no darkness what so ever regarding Brian and Jackie’s D/s relationship. It is in fact beautifully portrayed. Brian is a Dom whose kink is rope play. Learning about the art of Shibari rope bondage as I read this story was fascinating. The love making scenes where Brian and Jackie engage in combine warmth and love, thrill and eroticism. There was deep trust and tenderness amid the heat of their passion. They wanted everything from and with each other, not merely their D/s status. The guys had a few bumps to get over on their way to achieving a solid foundation, but they learned from these and were stronger for them. I absolutely experienced their bonding, their apprehensions, and their strong love for one another.

One of the things I admire about this author’s writing is how artistic her characters are and how they are completely presented as unique and complex individuals. I always loved picturing Sonny weaving, working with his fabrics and creating new pigments. Jackie is talented as well, designing and crafting fine leather pieces. These are described in gorgeous detail, including a sumptuous corset which he wears in a memorable scene. Brian also knits and crochets, and has a soft spot for four legged friends. The author strikingly captures this individualism with her words. The story settings are likewise vivid and alive. Whether the characters were roaming the sun kissed plains of Nebraska, hanging out in Brian’s flat, or scrambling about in the dark shadowy depths of London, I felt as though I were there.

The sinister crime aspect in this story built slowly. It lurked in the background for the first half of the book and had me itching to see how it would play out. As Brian was promoted to Detective, he found himself wrapped up trying to solve a series of mysterious pranks designed to illicit great fear. There was interesting delving into the twisted criminal minds behind the pranks. This led to some unexpected twists and turns in the story. It also proved to be a genius way to show Jackie and Brian confronting their greatest fears, and proving their resilience and fortitude. I’m particularly looking forward to finding out how Brian ultimately processes his thoughts about his future as a detective…

The story ends with Brian and Jackie firmly together, but with so much more to learn about themselves and one another. I eagerly look forward to exploring that territory with them, as well as the adventures that are sure to come along the way.

Thank you Lou Sylvre for another lovely read. The Reese Dante cover on this book is yummo icing. So. Freaking. Gorgeous.

I just finished this book, and now I'm going to binge-read the entire series (the next five volumes). That's how interesting this series is. In this first volume, we get introduced to the characters, and then we get a taste of what we'll find in upcoming books. Fortunately, all the books are out now and I didn't have to wait for the author to publish the next book. I'd go crazy if I had to wait for the next book because this book doesn't give you the whole story. However, since all the books are out, you can jump right into the second book and continue the story. Love the story so far.

This story is part of the Vasquez & James universe and takes place before Because of Jade. Brian has never forgotten the young man who caught his attention several years before, and when he is visiting Luki and Sonny and runs into Jackie again Brian discovers that his feelings are just as strong but this time Jackie is old enough to pursue. But has Jackie’s kidnapping left lingering scars? Jackie has always remembered Brian as the man he felt safe with after his kidnapping, meeting him on equal footing has Jackie eager to get to know the man better but a long distance relationship isn’t ideal. Accepting the university he wanted to attend has Jackie and Brian in the same country and their relationship picks up, but Brian’s job and Jackie’s studying has their time together limited. As Brian hunts for a criminal who likes to scare people Jackie’s new friendship with fellow students and geocaching buddies leads to him being held captive by a psychopath and Brian has to move quickly if he wants to save the man he loves.

The first thing I’d advise everyone is to ensure you have read the Vasquez and James series or at the very least to have read Finding Jackie before cracking open this book as you will get the full background of events that are mentioned in this story about one of the main characters Jackie.

When we meet up with Brian and Jackie again six years have passed since the events in Finding Jackie and we see the progress that both men have made in their lives. Brian has become a Dom who specialises in Shibari (rope play); he has been working as civilian staff at Scotland Yard and has applied for police recruitment. Meeting up with Jackie again has him longing for the man as his sub, but he is unsure if Jackie is ready or is still suffering from the lingering effects of his kidnapping. Jackie has done his best to move forward from his imprisonment, his therapy not only helped him with his mental recovery but has made him realise that it is also a subject that fascinates him. Jackie has also never lost his interest in submission and Jackie is confident that Brian could be the Dom for him. Together these men are wonderful, it isn’t easy for either of them though as everyday life seeks to keep them apart.

Lou Sylvre has written a wonderful story where her characters take centre stage, their inner emotions are there for all to see and we are with Jackie and Brian every step as they work out what they feel. We also have the touch of angst and danger that Lou manages to infuse in her stories, Jackie and Brian both angst over their first tentative steps in the relationship and then there is the danger that Jackie inadvertently finds himself in. The mystery/suspense side of the story really is kinda hair-raising, and I won’t give anything away except to say there really are some sick puppies in the world *shudder*.

This story flows smoothly with Jackie and Brian’s relationship moving at a good pace, they have some very sensual moments and boy are they hot together! I found myself captivated by this story, seeing Jackie and Brian connect and begin their romance was very sweet and watching as they juggled their lives to spend time together was a refreshing change from seeing couples instantly fitting their lives together easily. So we have a budding romance, a touch of light D/s involving some very sensual rope play, we have a dash of chills as the suspense unfolds and then we are hit with danger as a psychopath finds thrills in fear.

Hmmm I suppose I would have to recommend this story to those who love romances that struggle to get off the ground, who love light BDSM, who loves a slight mystery, who adore chills and a dash of danger, who love characters who have been through hell and back and stand strong and who find the love they deserve.

4.5 star review by Vicki

Oh I was so happy to see this pop up for release! I have enjoyed the Vasquez and James books and I was sad to see them end. I had hopped Jackie and Brian would get their own story, and here we have it!

Brian and Jackie have appeared in previous books in the Vasquez and James series, Brian worked for Luki, Jackie is Luki’s nephew that had some serious issues. Brian helped rescue Jackie from a kidnapping, and bonded with the younger man, but knew the time was not right for anything to happen between them. Brian leaves Luki’s business and heads to England to make a life for himself. Jackie heads off to get some serious counseling.

Brian returns to the US to celebrate Christmas with his parents, and visits Luki and Sonny while he’s in the area. Jackie is also visiting Luki and Sonny, and Brian gets a look at the beautiful man Jackie has become. They share a car ride to the airport, exchange email addresses, and show some interest in one another. This starts a very tentative, long distance relationship between the two. They agree there may be something beautiful between them, Brian being dominant, and Jackie being submissive. They talk through their likes and dislikes, kinks and such, and seem compatible. They reunite at Jackie’s graduation and the relationship is cemented. Yum.

So there are two sides to this story, as happens with novels like this. The lovely relationship that carefully builds between Brian and Jackie. Jackie has some trust issues, having been abused by his father, then kidnapped and tortured, he is rightly slow to trust. But he’s healed both physically and mentally. He has always been submissive, but has to walk a careful line in his submission, not liking pain, and having been abused. Brian is dominant, but is more in to bondage, Shibari specifically, and less in to providing pain. They actually are the perfect matches for the other. But damn, do they make it hard for each other to get together! I loved the slow gentle buildup, I loved their scenes together, and the sex. Just perfect.

Then there is the mystery. Creepy. With a capital “C”! I won’t say what happens, it was slightly predictable, I could see what was coming, but it was still well done. Lou gives us just enough of a plot to give Brian and Jackie’s romance a nice background and drama, something to pull Brian’s focus away, and leave Jackie open to make some poor decisions. I wanted to slap him, watching him do it! Duh. I liked the catalyst for the drama, it is a hobby my husband I used to do, and I like seeing it used in a book, but was disturbed to see how it was used! It had never dawned on me that it could be a bad thing. See how I’m carefully not saying what our hobby was? Anyway, good use of that hobby, creepy characters, and a great ending.

I loved seeing glimpses of Luki and Sonny, and I love Brian and Jackie as a new couple. I’d be happy to read more stories involving the two of them. Seems like they have an exciting life ahead, career-wise and in their D/s relationship!

I like Lou’s writing style, although I admit it took me a book or two to get in to it. I don’t really have the words to describe it, slow and meandering maybe, but not in a negative way. She’s very gentle, even when telling a hard story, or when describing a naughty bit of BDSM. It worked very well in this book. The relationship needed to be slow between Brian and Jackie, and that slow easy style was perfect.

If you have read the Luki and Sonny books you’ll like this one. If you haven’t, you should! But you would probably be ok reading this one as a standalone. There is certainly background stuff for both of these men you’d be better off knowing, but you could enjoy the story with out it. But I’d go get the first Luki and Sonny book and start there!

Oh yes, I should say that I love the cover, and the title is very clever!

“One of the greatest discoveries a man makes, one of his great surprises, is to find he can do what he was afraid he couldn't do.” ~ Henry Ford

Brian Harrison quit his job at Vasquez Security and went to London because of his unsettling response to Jackie Vasquez, who was only sixteen at the time; but Brian never forgot Jackie. Six years later, Brian visits Jackie's uncle, Luki, where he also gets to see Jackie again. Brian is stunned at the difference between the boy he left and the grown man he is now. Interestingly enough, the mysterious bond between them is as strong as ever. Brian would like to explore these feelings, but because of Jackie's traumatic past, he hesitates. Brian's kink is Shibari, a Japanese bondage style, and he fears that involving Jackie in such an activity may cause him harm.

When Brian and Jackie decide to pursue this inexplicable bond between them, they both know the road is going to be a rocky one. They have both changed a lot and have to learn a lot about each other. Brian is still wary of hurting Jackie, but Jackie definitely wants to be with Brian and boldly pursues him. At first, their relationship is long distance, which is always complicated, but somehow they manage. Brian works for Scotland Yard; Jackie is still in college, but fortunately is accepted to a graduate school in London. They take time to get to know each other, pushing limits, but mindful of each other's reactions. Brian learns that he is very right about Jackie being a natural born sub. He becomes his Dom and carefully works with Jackie, initiating him to the art of Shibari, which Jackie takes to very naturally. Both of them are almost overwhelmed by the emotional and lustful scenarios their lovemaking involves and become closer in every way. They blend together, two halves making a complete and beautiful whole—yin and yang.

Even though Jackie wants to be with Brian, he insists on getting his own apartment rather than moving in with him. He knows that he's still got a lot of growing and thinking to do. He has taken his therapy very seriously and pushed himself hard to understand himself, but his shadowy past still interferes with his life, keeping him guessing whether the fear he feels is real or imagined, a lingering effect of the horrors he's had to overcome. He is determined not to let them control his present and future. Life as a cop's partner is never easy. Brian might be called away at any time; it's hard to make plans. When they are together, they burn up the sheets with passion which is extremely emotional at the same time. Brian makes Jackie feel safe and takes his responsibility to him seriously. When Jackie inadvertently becomes involved in a case, he is, once again, placed in a position that could either make or break him. Jackie must use the coping techniques and self-examination skills he has worked so hard to master. His choice will determine his future and Brian's as well.

This story is well-written and multilayered. The passionate love story is seamlessly fused with the mystery and suspense portion. 'A Shot of J&B' could be read alone; but, beside missing fantastic stories with great characters, to truly understand the complexities of Brian and Jackie's relationship, I recommend reading the 'Vasquez and James' series first. If you like a bit of light D/s action along with a passionate romance, self-growth, suspense, and mystery, this may be a story you will enjoy. Thanks, Lou, for giving Brian and Jackie their well-earned happy ending.

This an excellent story about the romance between Brian and Jackie, six years after the events in the book "Finding Jackie," the third in the Vasquez and James series. In essence, young Jackie was kidnapped and tortured, and Brian was a member of the team that rescued him. Six years later, they meet again and begin a tentative romance, one that is long distance and excruciatingly sensitive for a number of reasons. Jackie is working on his master's degree in forensic psychology on the west coast of the US. Brian works for Scotland Yard in London. Jackie is also the nephew of Vasquez, Brian's old boss. Brian is a Dom, and Jackie is on the brink of discovering himself as a submissive.

I'm not a big fan of D/s stories, but I am when they are written well, and I think I've discovered a new kink of my own—sweet kink. I found the D/s scenes here to be elegantly done and with a new dimension for me, Shibari. The long distance romance is never easy, yet they are able to work through the issues that come up, though the author always makes them work for it. When Jackie is admitted to a master's program in London, they are finally able to eliminate the long distance issue, but another problem has cropped up. Brian has been working a case where a psychopath, fascinated by fear, has finally murdered someone, and the psychopath's next target is Jackie.

I am definitely going to read the other books in this series. I love fast-paced mysteries and suspense, though some of the time the romance just seems to get in the way, and visa versa, but this novel is a graceful blend of all the elements.

A Shot of J&B is the first book in the Vasquez Inc by Lou Sylvre.

This book isn’t a mystery but an introduction, or rather re-introduction, to the main characters. These men, Brain Harrison and Jackie Vasquez met when both were much younger and there was an immediate connection. For reasons, only one of which was the fact he was only sixteen, Jackie was in no position to enter into a relationship. Brian recognizes this and puts his feelings for Jackie on his mental backburner, realizing when and if the right time ever came, their patience would pay off. Fate smiles on Brian and brings he and Jackie together again enough years later they’re both adults.

Throughout the story Brian and Jackie rediscover each other. At first, it’s mainly through correspondence but eventually Brian arranges a weekend getaway for the two of them. Both of these young men are multilayered and complicated people. They’re cautious when it comes opening up to other people and that makes for a very interesting dynamic between them. They have common kinky desires and begin their exploration, falling in love along the way. The Dom/sub element of their lives falls into place naturally, but not too quickly, which is nice. The reader gets to savor their journey without being rushed along.

There is a set up for the mystery to come in the next book in the series and we’re introduced to a truly diabolical villain.

A Shot of J&B is a quick, hot, emotionally charged story that will draw the reader into the world of Vasquez Inc.

Jackson Vasquez "Jackie" and Brian Harrison have known each other for a while. Despite their age difference there was an immediate attraction. With a past trauma in Jackie's life that Brian witnessed and with Brian fighting his feelings for the much younger Jackie, Brian leaves and finds himself living alone in London.

Brian's job is one where he is to search out patterns in seemingly different assaults. Someone is scaring people almost to death.

I enjoyed the mystery in this story and that is perhaps what really captured my attention. I thought that the romance/love aspect of the story was somewhat weak. Also, there were times when it was very apparent that there needs to be another edit done.

I would have liked to know more about the relationship between Jackie and Brian. Both of their thoughts and feelings - it could have been so much more, but it almost seemed an afterthought for most of the story. In reality, this was a mystery book with some romance thrown in.

Also, in the end, I thought that it was wrapped up very quickly. There was all of this buildup and then it was just over. This was a good mystery book. It was just an OK romance book.

I was given this in return for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads.

Four stars!
I loved seeing Jackie, Brian, Luki, Sonny, and all of the rest of the Vasquez clan in this book. Even if some of the characters are only there briefly. It was wonderful seeing Jackie grown and mostly healed. I truly enjoyed the scenes where Jackie submits to Brian and where they delve into some Shibari and rope bondage. So sexy! I kept trying to figure out who the bad guy was. I went back and forth a few times before the reveal on if my guesses were right or not. Lou Sylvre always does a wonderful job adding little details that bring the story to life. Like Jackie’s love of geocaching with stories that feel real (I’m going to assume they are since they seem like it). Not the only example, but things like that always make a story more enjoyable and help me connect with the characters even more. I’m curious what’s going to happen next for Jackie and Brian, but they are solid enough in their relationship that I can wait for the next book to find out. Sort of patiently. Maybe.

This is a spinoff of the popular Vasquez security series. A Shot of J&B takes up after book 3. You do not have to have read any of the previous books to enjoy this at all. I will say I am one of the few that hasn’t read the others ( but I will as soon as time permits… even more so now that I had a taste) If you don’t like spoilers and want to read the other books I think you should do so before reading this book. I, on the other hand,, love a bit of spoiler; it just makes me want the other book more.
I love the title A Shot of J& B and love when titles are worked into books. This one is spot on! I love the double entendre and how that too is carried on throughout the story. This story has a little of everything from sexy men, new love, new jobs, bondage, D’s, and even some mystery and suspense. You would think this would be too much, but it’s a perfect mix of it all and some hot man-sex as well.
So if you are like mystery and suspense, BDSM, new adult, hot sex, or romance…here ya go…all rolled into one!

Brian is no Luki-like

I was really bummed that we didn't get to see Brian and Jackie at the club and back at home, after the last page! I really wanted more Shibari and sex.

Aside from that, I was not as happy with this book as I was with Luki and Sonny's stories. I did like it, since this was a couple I looked forward to reading about. Jackie deserved to have good things happen after the past he had. There was the author's careful character and world building, since we didn't get too much of Jackie and Brian in the prior series. However, it was a little too dragged out, with too many details. I didn't care for the little break up, either. I felt it was unnecessary and Brian's sudden doubt about his Dom role, contrived.

The setup for the mystery was also a little too easy to guess. That seemed like an over-extended set-up, too. Then there were so many convenient events forced into a short time frame to deliver a more exciting ending. One of those was the circumstances around finding the dog. Overall, I did like it, I just felt it wasn't as smoothly written.

This is my first book by this author, and it started out so well. I little confusing with them jumping not just State to State but country to Country, but I started to over look that and get to the story which seemed promising. A teenager kidnapped, a young man tasked with finding the kid only to find out he’s the one that he crushed on and then stepped away from because of the age difference. Years later meet again, rekindle the feelings they both shared. And then the murder, mystery aspect all made for a really great foundation.
Problem was, for me at least were the consistent repeat phrases, suggestions, words. We get it, Jackie is into geocaching and that will be his downfall. And as the title suggests lots of shots of J&B are poured and drank, among, other issues I just found too annoying and took away from the enjoyment of the story. However, I did like the twist at the end, just wasn’t enough to make up
for the whole book.

I received a copy of A Shot of J&B by Lou Sylvre recently and wound up liking it so much more than I expected! It turns out that Jackie and Bryan are perfectly suited for each other. Jackie with his horrific past needs a strong man and Bryan is just the perfect mix of strong and caring to fit the bill. Bryan likewise needs someone just for him and Jackie is happy to oblige. Bryan finds his work for Scotland Yard consuming most of his time and rarely sees Jackie, even though he is in graduate school in London. The two worlds come crashing together in a way that threatens Jackie yet again, but of course Brian saves the day. I loved the way Lou took a potentially sad animal situation and turned it into something positive and happy. My only caveat would be it might be helpful to have read the books in the Vasquez and James series, as this is the next generation of Vasquez Security.

Jackie is such an amazing personality and character in this series, it is no wonder Brian is completely enthralled. Brian is a solid comforting presence for Jackie, whereas Jackie breathes life into a man much too young to be so set in his ways. I love the sincerity in their emotions, and how they lay everything bare for each other, with no fear of ridicule or recrimination. The bond they share is the perfect counterpart to the spine-tingling suspense laid out by an author who can definitely hold her own against any crime novelist.

I received it through a Love Bytes giveaway!

This was such a good book. I loved the characters Jackie and Brian. The Dom is the best kind.. Loving, gentle, generous and pure of heart. As well as human enough to make mistakes.

The mystery is so well thought out and frightening. I do question how the murderer was able to go to another country and be undetected. Still trying to figure out the blood in the shack. I think I know where it's from but nothing is clearly stated.

Both M/C's had wonderful support networks and people to work with.

I'm looking forward to reading more by this author.
