I wish this book was much longer. It suggests deep breathing to calm down. Maybe other emotions and helps could have been included. Sweet illustrations.

I’d be interested to see if this book helps busy bodies. Teaching them breathing techniques and metacognition at an early age might be beneficial. Eric Carle’s style is as wonderful as ever. I didn’t think the “happy” page was quite accurate.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar guides children through a simple relaxation technique featuring Carle's trademark illustrations.

An excellent way to introduce preschoolers to the concept of mindfulness.

So, Goodreaders, have any of you been told that you have "Monkey Mind," and it is necessary to calm it?

Many people believe in this advice, but you sure don't have to.

As a teacher of Transcendental Meditation for 16 years, I never did that to my students. Since I believed and still believe that the "Monkey Mind" idea, in pursuit of personal development, is utter nonsense. Unhelpful. And even kind of cruel.

Once I stopped working for Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and went out on my own, in 1986, founding Energy Spirtuality, guess what? I've helped people on every continent that doesn't have an ice cap. Never, ever have I taught people to distrust their own minds, nor to stifle them.

Yet I've helped a lot of people to self-actualize a great deal, sometimes even moving into Spiritual Enlightenment. But never by trying to whip their "Monkey Mind" into submission, feed it some metaphorical bananas, or anything similar. (To learn more, google on "Energy Spirituality for Spiritual Enlightenment" -- and be sure to include quotes in your search.)

ALL THAT SAID

What if you happen to believe you have a "Monkey Mind." Maybe you believe that it "can't hurt" to follow this outdated kind of teaching?

What if you further believe that you are helping an innocent toddler, reading "Calm" to your child, thereby becoming complicit in teaching that child to "let thoughts cross your mind like clouds floating in the sky"? (Yep, I'm quoting this book here.)

Then you may well LOVE this book. Well, you --not I -- would count as the intended audience for this "Calm." On your behalf, my official rating is FIVE STARS.

Below I will, however, add a comment that you might find worth reading.

A simple approach to mindfulness and naming feelings, with illustrations featuring several characters from the world of Eric Carle. My 3 year old is enjoying learning about different emotions and this has been a much-enjoyed bedtime story where he asks me if I feel happy, sad, jumpy, calm, fluttery etc. then tells me which ones he’s feeling.

I wish this book was longer. This book is a basic introduction to mindfulness. This book helps the young reader with naming the different emotions that they may be feeling. It gives simple relaxation techniques to help the reader calm down. It would have been great if the book was longer and gave more examples. The illustration in the book was cute.

Great book for bedtime reading for both kids and adults, and it's nice and short. I wish it had ended with the cloud page and not included the last page with the instruction to smile.

Herkenbare Eric Carle afbeeldingen maar helaas zonder prominente rol voor het rupsje zelf. De inhoud is diepzinnig en voor volwassenen ook zeker erg passend. Echt een boekje om mindfulness eenvoudig toe te passen.
