Mixed memories of reading this as a kid. The kidnapping scene was vivid and frightening but the rest of the story about hiding in the bush with wild cats escaped me. Might need to reread this one ... [edit] … which I just did! And I enjoyed it substantially more as an adult. It is actually very well written. The author captures the feel and tone of the wild Australian bush very well. The characters are interesting and one is almost a “magical child”. It is tense and engaging and I really wanted the boys to escape their captors. My only issue is I felt it was a little anticlimactic and I thought the boys letting the crooks off the hook rather than escaping and letting them get their comeuppance was disappointing. But otherwise - a good solid read that would be enjoyed by older kids or adults. I also think it could be made into a very interesting period film

Just put this down. A quick delightful read! Hadn't read an adventure/suspense in ages and had fun! I picked it up at a country market and after reading a couple of pages at home was surprised to see on the back it's a children's novel. Quite creepy for kids! Loved it and loved that it was set in Australia, which I didn't realise when I bought. She's so great at describing body language and power dynamics. Might seek out more of her 'children's' stories ha
I have very fond memories of this book, it reminds me of other 'gone bush and then it all went wrong' stories.
There is definitely something to be said for getting along, helping others just because you should and a little bit of revenge. I saw this book at the lifeline book fair and had to have it!
