I consider this book a must in the self- help world. The "givenizer" is now replaceable with more up to date technology but the idea behind it is infallible. I love how seriously this man treated his time.
I bought and read this book as a bit of nostalgia for myself personally. I’m a self help junkie and yet did not realize that Charles Givens had written this book in 1993 - yes, it’s old, but I can see where many of the themes and strategies he employed were part of the same thought process as many authors I have read since. Makes me want to research some origins of techniques. Most of the book is timeless solid advice and well worth your time - of course some is irrelevant. I owe a debt of gratitude to the author as his previous works Wealth Without Risk / Financial Self Defense, greatly shaped my financial strategy and I can now look back and say he was absolutely spot on. Sadly he passed away in 1997 at the relatively young age of 57 due to cancer, but as you read this book, it’s clear he left nothing on the table and I admired that he put his family first-advice I have always tried to follow.
Writing this review as a thank you to the author - RIP Charles and thank you for making a positive impact in my life.
Also note, at this stage - 27 years after publishing, there isn’t really much new that isn’t in all the self help tomes, but this is a interesting compilation and very comprehensive. Almost written like a list of life hacks - fun to read but dated.
I really enjoyed reading the book. It’s easy to follow and explains in depth some key mental issues that most of us have without noticing. I really enjoyed the goal setting part of it. Will definitely do it. Perhaps a newer version is out there. The version read talks about fax machines and car phones. Yeah, it’s an old version but about 95% of the content is still useful today.
This guy looks like a child molester. I can summarize the good advice in the book in 1 sentence: write down your dreams, goals, values, action plans, and daily activities list. Unfortunately, this is surrounded by late night infomercial drivel. The dated advice (install a car phone and get a fax machine) is pretty funny, though.
I originally read this book in the mid 90's when Givens was busy doing seminars and infomercials all over the US. The book is definitely dated but I am glad I read it again. His goal planning, achievement and effectiveness advice are still valuable although many of the "nuts and bolts" ideas are no longer valid.
Superself actually does what the title states, show the reader how to become more effective. It is a book about action, not just reading. There is a lot of information, which the author strongly suggests you act on. I found myself doing just that, even when I didn't want.
