Charlie Rourke is an ultra fabulous human whirlwind on a mission to launch the next biggest band in the world. However, he might have taken on more than he could handle when he signed on to manage Zero. Promoting a rock band and finding gigs shouldn’t be hard. They’re a talented group with a ton of star power. If Charlie can find the right record label, he’s sure he can help them get to the next level. The only problem is the skater boy slash bassist with a quirky sense of humor. He’s annoying and silly, and he’s exactly Charlie’s type. Except he’s straight.
Ky Baldwin isn’t afraid to switch things up. He loves a challenge as much as anyone, but Charlie doesn’t make things easy. Zero’s manager is a force of nature with a razor sharp tongue, a quick wit, and a no-nonsense attitude. Ky can’t stop thinking about him. Winning over Charlie becomes Ky’s pet project. But when the ice between them thaws, neither is prepared for the intensity of going from enemies to lovers. They’ll have to decide if they’re willing to start from scratch and take a chance on the unexpected.
Lane Hayes loves a good romance! She’s the bestselling author of the Out in College, Starting From, Better Than, A Kind Of, Right and Wrong, and Leaning Into Series! Lane loves red wine, chocolate and travel (in no particular order). All things she can find in sunny SoCal where she lives with her amazing husband in a not quite empty nest.
Ever since Charlie was introduced in book one I've been dying to read his story and it definitely didn't disappoint. This is book two and while it isn't a follow-up,the stories are connected so I would advise reading that first. Also to fully appreciate the characters and the family dynamics, especially Charlie's-I even struggled a bit initially remembering things.
So Charlie is just a bit fabulous (I'm sure he'd use that word to describe himself!). Sassy, driven, immaculately turned out-a true force of nature. He's taking his job managing the up and coming band Zero very seriously. What he doesn't need is distraction in the form of a band member....the sexy skater boy Ky.He seemed to fight his attraction to Ky from the start. With his laid back vibe Charlie is sure Ky won't be sticking around and the last thing Charlie wants is casual. They weren't exactly enemies but the book certainly has that enemies to lovers vibe at the beginning.
For his part Ky doesn't do labels. He's bi but has had more experience with women than men.I loved his attitude. He wasn't constantly lamenting himself for his attraction to Charlie-he kind of just went with it.These two were pretty perfect together.Opposites, their relationship developed at just the right pace. And these boys know how to burn up the sheets.....
A bit of family drama with Ky added some angst and I loved how Ky handled things in that respect.
Overall I really enjoyed Starting from Scratch and would definitely recommend it.

This is the second book in the Starting from series by Lane Hayes. It can be read as a standalone but I advise you to read the first book too to better understand the dynamics between the characters and to avoid spoilers about other characters.
I loved this second book much more than the first one. I got invested into the story pretty quickly. Both main characters are lovable, sweet, interesting.
I adored Ky/Kyle! He was amazing with his surfer appearance and his love to skateboard. Behind his carefree attitude he has a lot of fears and pain coming from his horrible relationship with his father.
The main characters have such a wonderful chemistry! This book has a lot of HOT scenes and I loved them all. The angst isn't over the top. The ending was extremely sweet and I finished this book with a huge smile on my face!
I really enjoyed this one. I especially loved the chemistry between the two MC's. Loved this one so much more than the first.
Charlie is a whirlwind of words and I adored him and his antics as much as Ky did. Ky... I am all about this skater boy and is carefree spirit. He was the calm to Charlie's chaos. They balanced each other so well. I loved how much Ky wanted Charlie. Wanted his attention, his words, his body, and in the end, his heart. Charlie wanted Ky just as much and couldn't believe this person who he first thought his enemy, could be his forever. Both men have past issues when it comes to their upbringing and their relationships with their parents. It definitely brings some complications to their love story. Just a bit though. Mostly it's these two having some amazing banter and some really steamy scenes.
You really can't read this story without mentioning Oliver. At least I can't. I adored him! He is the cutest little brother of all time. I loved how much he looked up to Charlie. When he would say things like how Charlie was his best friend I would absolutely melt all over my kindle. I really loved their relationship. Ky was really great with him too. I just loved every time he got some page time with the couple.
This was such a fun read. I highly recommend it when you want something to read that will make you not only laugh, but even tear up a bit. It did me.
Happy reading dolls! xx
I was given an ARC by IndiGo Marketing and Design in exchange for an honest review.
Great addition to the series. I quite liked Charlie. And Ky!
Some bits seemed a bit repetitive...descriptions of Charlie's dads and family dynamic. His self-worth issues. All explained through internal monologue.
Didn't ruin the story for me.
Hoping Tegan gets a book....maybe with Declan as the love interest? There's definitely something there!
I really loved book one and was super excited to read Charlie's story. He is a great character, sassy, witty and funny. However, this story is missing the most crucial thing in a romance: chemistry.
I hope it works better for other readers; this is just my opinion.
Starting From Scratch is book two in the Starting From series by Lane Hayes. This is Charlie and Ky’s book and I admit I was already partly in love with Charlie from the first book so I knew I was going to love this one. I was not mistaken!!
Charlie Rourke is twenty five years old and he is amazing. He’s a man that lives his life loudly. He dresses colorfully, has endless self confidence, and has no filter, at all! The band, Zero has been together for six months now and Charlie just knows they are destined for greatness. He has taken on the roll of their manager and now just has to find the right label to produce their first album. But finding the right fit is easier said than done.
Ky Baldwin is twenty eight years old and is the bass player for Zero. He’s a surfer/skate boarder/musician who doesn’t believe in labels. Ky has a painful past but he is determined not to let it define him. He feels like he is doing exactly what he is supposed to be doing.
Charlie and Ky have reacted to each other from the beginning. They annoy each other but are drawn to each other at the same time. There may have been some practical jokes involved but I believe their reaction to each other was more like the, I want his attention thing. Ky realizes that Charlie’s presence makes him happy. So he decides that he is going to win him over no matter what, and he does. It was so much fun to watch these two come together and fall for each other.
I think what I loved the most about these two is the respect they had for each other. I adore Charlie and he wanted so badly for Ky to be happy, to be free of the past that still haunted him. They may seem like opposites but they just worked together. They complimented each other. Yes, there were stumbles but I was confident that they were going to be able to work through them.
I’m reading this series with the box set which includes all the short stories. So, next, I am going to enjoy some more Charlie and Ky goodness in the short story, Charlie Has a Cold.
Fabulous Charlie is one of a kind. Not only out and proud, but out and proud and loud. His thoughts (and his mouth) go a mile a minute. He's emotional yet very smart. Few things (or people) can stand in his way. Managing the band Zero is a dream come true for him. He'll be able to branch out on his own without depending on his Dad's influence. He is determined to make it work. He doesn't need a sexy, bass playing, skater boy distracting him from his goals. Thank goodness that distraction is straight.
Ky has been bisexual since his teens, but it's not something many people know about him. In fact, he doesn't like labels at all. He prefers to go with the flow, following whatever catches his eye. That's how he went from the skater circuit to playing bass in a hot, up and coming band. Now Charlie has caught his eye. He loves the snarky, take charge attitude Charlie gives him. Going with the flow leads to a kiss, which leads to a make-out session, which leads to...
These two! Oh my goodness, so different from each other, yet so good together. I loved reading their story.
This is book 2 in the series and I think you can read it as a stand alone. But why would you want to? Book 1 is just as good.
A huge thank you to Lori at Indigo Marketing & Design for this ARC.
The second entry in Lane Hayes' rock band series is an absolute classic tale of a pairing which really shouldn't work on paper but in actuality are utterly perfect.
Charlie has no filter, he's hilarious but his outward confidence is hiding a young man who still feels abandoned by his movie producer dad even though they have a good relationship. Kyle is laidback, a skater dude who exudes cool vibes but is hiding his own set of secret hurts.
Together they spark like a firecracker and the dialogue between them is wonderful, the pacing races through their unexpected relationship from first crushes and into a deep and purposeful relationship which is healing for both.
Although this can be read as a standalone, I personally wouldn't advise it as you will lose some of the nuances of the storyline where it comes to Ky's bandmates Zero, as well as Charlie's (non-sexual!) relationship with Gray, Justin's partner.
I have to say though, I did snort my tea at a couple of references to Ky's pole and it threw me a little bit out of the story at that point. Still, for a bisexual boy who was really moving into embracing that side of his attractions, he certainly knew how to work said pole 🤣
Sweet, steamy, relatively low angsty, it's a Lane Hayes book in all its glory.
Now, I'm reckoning (okay, I'm really hoping!) the next one in this series is going to be an enemies to lovers hate sex filled redemption for Zero's drummer Tegan and previous bandmate Declan.
#ARC kindly received from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review
I wondered how these two could work together in the beginning but ended wanting even more! They both have such big personalities in their own way, but compliment each other in a way that I wasn't expecting. They play off each other beautifully and enhance the good in one another. I've quickly fallen in love with the members of Zero and I can't wait for the next installment!
I enjoyed reading Starting From Scratch but listening to it, was even better!
Starting From Scratch is one of the hottest , sweetest and quirky , friends to lovers , M/M, Rock Star Romance I read in 2019 .
And now, I am adding listened, to the statement above.
Michael Dean narration was exciting, enthusiastic, engaging and OTT. His performance of the hot AF, explicit - dirty-smutty and utterly delicious sexy times were A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. This audio is so hot that I almost feared of self combustion 😉😁😍
Lane Hayes is one of my absolute favorites, for real. I love getting to read her books and am rarely disappointed by her stories. I smile, I laugh, I sometimes get a little misty eyed and, well, I almost always get hot and bothered if you know what I mean ;o)
This is a perfect example. I freaking loved this book. The more I think about it the more perfect it becomes.
This was such a great addition to this series. We got to meet Charlie in Starting from Zero and I knew his story would be special because he is special. I love, love, love Charlie and am so glad he found someone that totally gets him and man, Ky so did. He is such a force of nature and feels so much he needed someone that saw him for his perfection and man oh man, he found him. Kyyyyyyyy…whatta guy. Really. No complaints whatsoever about him. He is so freaking real. He just lives, come what may. Go with the flow and it is beautiful. HE is beautiful. I just loved these two together. I love that it just happened because of a kiss that happened just because Ky wanted to do it. No preconceived notions, just want and then do. No games. Gah. I just loved this story!
The whole book pretty much worked for me and I can’t think of anything I didn’t really like.
Still some answers needed but I am sure there is so much more to come and I can’t wait!

Lane Hayes is one of my all-time favorite authors. There's something about her storytelling that always hits the spot for me- and now that's she writing in dual POVs-
Anyhoo, let's get to Ky and> Charlie.
-Highlights:
-Love their personalities, and their opposite personalities helped ground the other. Soothe the noises in the other's head. One is a force of nature, and the other is laid back and will face things as they come.
-Chemistry was there from the start. You could feel the UST jumping off the page.
-Overall, pretty low angst except for some family drama.
-A sprinkle of mystery.
-A little bit of an enemies to lovers vibe.
-Quirky humor.
-I loved the relationship build-up. I'm always a sucker for a relationship that starts off casual and grows.
-And in usual LH fashion, the epilogue was all kinds of sweet.
++Can this book be read as a standalone? Yes, but I think it works better reading book 1, Starting from Zero, first. While each book is about an individual couple, there's a continuing story of Zero, the band, and their journey of becoming big.
I think, Starting from Scratch is a wonderful addition to the Starting From series. It's romantic and sexy, and left me anticipating the remaining books in the series!
I've decided to hit the pause button... and wait to gather my thoughts on this one until after I've had the chance to go back and read the first book...then revisit this one. At this point, I think my feelings might change once I fill in some of the missing (emotional) gaps. I think it will be a much more enjoyable read once I have the foundation I think is missing.
When I read the first book I wasn't sure if I liked Charlie or not. He was pretty chaotic and he talked non-stop about everything and nothing. I thought it would be exhausting to read a whole book with him as a main character. But.... I was so so wrong about him!
Charlie is a sweet person with a huge personality and a heart of gold. He is strong and loyal. It turns out that he only talks a mile a minute when he's nervous or he wants to divert the attention somewhere else. The rest of the time he talks at a regular speed and it's easy to follow his thought process.
Ky, the drummer of Zero, is an enigma at the beginning. At first, he gives the impression that he's this laid back type that's always looking for a good time and never takes anything seriously. As the story progressed though, a whole new layer of Ky was revealed. He's actually suffered a lot in his life and had to depend on himself for many years. He was family issues that go way back and have played a big part in who he is today.
Charlie and Ky start as antagonists. Their attraction and chemistry is obvious but in trying to stay away they end up bitching at each other and constantly getting in each other's face. Charlie's little brother helps bring them closer together and as they spend more and more time in each other's company they stop resisting what they want.
The band keeps making it's way to stardom slowly but steadily and they're in the process of getting a deal from a label. They're just looking for the right fit, but it turns out that's more difficult to find than they thought.
I liked Charlie and Ky as a couple, they balanced each other out. I liked how Charlie was there to support Ky when he needed it and be strong for him. Ky on the other hand is able to keep Charlie on the more mellow side of his character.
The story had some strong scenes and a bit of family drama. Ky's father confused me and I never understood what really happened with him and what was a lie. He was a weird character, bitter and a little unstable.
I'm liking this new series by Lane Hayes and I'm excited to see whose story will be next and to find out what the future holds for Zero and each one of it's members.
*An ARC of this book was kindly provided to me in exchange for an honest review. *
Charlie is such a wild ride, he is a go-getter with a lot of self confidence and Ky is his laid bad skater boy!
I thought this book was good but I think book one was better… I am nervous to go to book three I saw some mixed reviews form people I follow.. but I love me a good enemies to lovers trope sooo I might give it a shot
This was cute and sexy, but something was missing. I found myself completely bored around the 50% mark and almost DNF. I am glad I pushed through, but it was just ok in the end.
Charlie was fun and fabulous, Ky was hot and sexy, but they were both immature and annoying. It almost felt like a college book, but these guys are in their late twenties.
A cute addition to the series but not a book I’ll remember or want to reread.
"That's exactly what I want, Char. Crowd me, overwhelm me. I don't want space. I want you." Lane Hayes delivers a romantic book without schmaltz, pretense, operatic drama, or false angst. Sure, there's Charlie who may be some folk's idea of 'too much' but is really just an authentic person in a sea generics.
I say do yourself a favor and read this series in order because it's really the story of a rock band in the modern world, from soup to nuts. Each installment delivers the love story of a member of the band and brings the next step in the band's progress. Here we have Ky, the bassist, former skater boy, and generally aloof SoCal guy who's really more than what you see on the surface. He's been covertly eyeing Charlie, the band manager, who's learning on the fly, and doing a bang up job. Charlie who doesn't know the meaning of the word plain, and can overthink any situation like a champ. Charlie isn't unaware of Ky and neither is a simpering Miss. In other words this is "Opposites Attract Heaven".
I don't know what LH's plans are for the next installments, but I'm hoping for a story for Sebastian, Charlie's father, and Grey's former partner. He's not a member of the band but ... hmm? What about Sebastian & Tegan? Too much?
I gotta say, I didn't love this as much as I was hoping to. While I liked Ky and Charlie individually - although for me Charlie took some warming up to - and together they had their moments and they had chemistry pop out here and there, I found the story and their relationship somewhat lacking.
Now don't get me wrong, I liked this enough to round up instead of down, and there were certainly enjoyable parts throughout this, but I was just missing a little too much to give this a full 4 stars or more.
There was no enemies-to-lovers or all that much banter. These two had some prank wars, sure - mostly off page, so...didn't help - and some snarky convos, but they weren't that snarky and there wasn't any hatred to be seen at all.
This is my problem with books that label the relationship "enemies-to-lovers" or at least "adversaries-to-lovers" when there really isn't any of that. It creates a false sense of what the relationship will be about and then it's kind of like "oh...okay, so there was no hatred and the misconceptions and the "i hate them, i do!" while also not being able to stop thinking about them" and so on...like there was none of that. They were just a little banter-y and that was it. Like no, if you're going to give me a summary that says or implies that two characters will be butting heads at the very least, I expect to see that in the story. Not like a scene or two where they banter or have a problem with each other and then it's all cleared up and they were never really enemies or anything like that to begin with.
Although with this it just kind of says "when the ice between them thaws" to be fair, but still...there wasn't even iciness between them *shrug*
Anyway, and there was a few things here or there, like with Ky's dad - it was made into such a big deal, and yet the fallout wasn't that bad. And then when Ky sees his abusive father (I don't care if he was only abusive for a time, he was still abusive) who has been horrible to him for about 20 years of his life, it seemed like that would be the end, Ky was moving on with his life, he got his closure, but then
But anyway, overall this was enjoyable, but it was just missing the chemistry overall and the plot wasn't overall all that exciting, and some other things bothered me here or there, so 3.5 stars for me. This was not one of the stronger reads for me in this author's collection. Still an enjoyable read, but could have been better, in my opinion.

I love Charlie! He cracks me up so hard 🤣 it’s been awhile since I’ve read a book about bands and Hollywood/entertainment industry. It’s not a new storyline, definitely something that’s been done over and over again. But! The execution was awesome. Especially the characters. Charlie definitely made up for a lot of this book.
I still don’t have the inclination to read book one but I’ll definitely keep a look out for the next book though 😬
What's hotter than watching two people fight the chemistry that is between them. I mean really it's like total foreplay for when they finally come together and that is exactly what we have with Charlie and Ky. These two men are so different from one another, yet they are a lot alike when it comes to relationships and their fears and this has to do with the way they were both raised.
Charlie is out and loud and proud and a whirlwind of energy always on the go, always needing to do something. Where Ky is more laid back which is true to his surfer dude looks and charm. They are sort of a yin and yang when it comes to fitting together. You wouldn't look at them and think they make sense but once you see them together and feel their energy and pull you'll get it.
There is quite a bit of angst in this story but not so much that it took away from the budding relationship of Ky and Charlie although they did have their moments. This was a fun, sexy read that occasionally got a bit emotional, nothing over the top though, so I'd keep tissues around but you may not need them.
I am really enjoying getting to know all of the men in the band ZERO and I look forward to reading all of their books.
This is an easy book to recommend to lovers of MM Romance that enjoy the Rockstar trope as well, and even if you don't like Rockstars I would still suggest you give it a read because these guys are more than just their careers.
I really enjoyed this. Entertaining story and likable characters. No unnecessary drama and they address their issues like adults and communicated and supported each other. There were some funny scenes and some lovely romantic ones. They were hot together too. So far this series is working really well for me. On to the next book.
Starting from Scratch is the second book in Lane Hayes’ Starting From series that focuses on various members of an indie band called Zero. Picking up pretty much where the first novel left off, we get to know Ky, the bassist for the band, and their new manager, Charlie. I have to tell you that I loved Charlie from the start. His straightforward approach to just about everything was refreshing and often humorous. But it was the dynamic between him and Ky that made this book really hum. They were a perfect foil for each other and I enjoyed watching Ky painfully admit to himself that most of his life he had been running from everything—especially commitment. From the very beginning, Charlie calls out Ky’s tendencies to avoid things by disappearing and tells him flat out that if Ky is going to leave the band high and dry, to do it now to save them all the grief later. Ky assures Charlie that he’s no longer the guy who dumps things and leaves and that moment marks the beginning of a mutual attraction that flairs to life and sizzles with heat.
Before I start this review...let's just take a minute...
to admire the view (and by view I mean cover)...ok, now let's move on...
"Starting From Scratch" is the next installment in the series 'Starting From' by Lane Hayes and for me the second book was a bit more enjoyable than the first one. I'm not saying that the first one was bad, just that for me this one was a little bit better.
We met both Charlie Rourke and Ky Baldwin in "Starting From Zero". Charlie became the manager for the band, Zero. While Ky is the bass player for Zero. Charlie's sure that Ky hates him, but Ky knows that the problem is Charlie hates him...are you seeing the issue here? Two men making assumptions about each other...it's enemies to lovers...it's a match made in heaven or it will be once Ky wins Charlie over.
Charlie's determined to make Zero a success without the help of his successful producer father. He needs to do this on his own merit...he knows his dad loves him and means well but for all of his bravado and confident exterior Charlie needs to show not just the world but himself that he can make be a success based on his own merits.
Ky long ago walked away from his father and learned to make his way in the world without any help from his father and he has no desire to see that change. Ky's a skater boy bassist with a quirky sense of humor and he's silly and annoying and while Charlie's trying not to admit it, in his heart he knows that Ky's perfect.
I loved Charlie and Ky together they worked for me. Their journey from enemies to lovers was filled with banter and snark with passion and heat. These two complimented each other perfectly. Charlie was heat and passion, Ky was cool and calm...except when he and Charlie came together...then everything became scorching hot!
Michael Pauley was once again the narrator for this story and I have to admit I can't really say that the narration worked better for me so much as I listened to this audiobook right after 'Starting From Zero' so I think I'd started to become a bit inured to the things that had previously bothered me. So this combined with the fact that overall I enjoyed this book a bit more than the first one resulted in a better overall rating from me.

An audio book of 'Starting From Scratch' was graciously provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.
I liked this one more than the first book in the series. I met Charlie in Starting From Zero and was immediately drawn to this mercurial character. I couldn't wait to read his story. He and Ky were a good fit after they got past the drama. Great narration by Michael Pauley. Recommended!
