Howler Brothers #1

Claiming Bite

Rate this book
What if the one thing you wanted most was forbidden?

Alpha werewolf King Howler seems to have everything he could want: power, wealth, and his own club where he can act out his dominant fantasies. But the one thing he lacks is his fated mate.

Shy loner Emerson has always craved submission, not to another human—to a shifter. Handing over control to anyone could be dangerous, but with a shifter, it might be deadly. Yet all his fantasies star a werewolf who can make him beg.

When King and Emerson meet, the bond between them is instinctive and undeniable. King can't resist the pull he feels toward the younger man, even though giving Emerson what he longs for is risky. Emerson doesn't care how vulnerable he is. He knows he belongs with King, and he's willing to do anything to prove it. As longing turns to love, King knows he must find a way to keep Emerson safe, both from his enemies and from himself, because in the end, nothing can stop an alpha from claiming his mate.

Claiming Bite is book 1 of the Howler Brothers series. Five brothers all looking for their fated mates.

Hello sexy werewolf BDSM! Silvia is always great with the kinky shifter stories, and this new series is off to a great start with this story.

King is a wolf shifter and is the leader of his pack and also a leader for the other shifters. He's an alpha through and through, controlling, demanding, and stern. The last thing he expects is to discover that he has a mate - and a human one at that. I actually loved that the shifters are very animalistic. King is frequently on the edge of letting his wolf take over, and he worried about harming a human being during any physical time together.

Emerson was a great character. I loved that even though he knew he wanted submission to a shifter, he also stood up for himself and refused to just be told what to do outside of the bedroom. He stood up to King, who needed it at times, and put him in his place. Emerson is truly the perfect match for King.

I can't wait to see some of the other pairings in this series - I think Henley and Damian have a story to be told!

I received an arc in exchange for an honest review.

Claiming Bite is a super sexy, kinky shifter story with some really nice world building. I enjoyed Violet’s take on the shifter world, as shifters are known to humans but have been mostly pushed into illegal enterprises. King comes from a powerful, incredibly wealthy shifter family, and he is trying to bring them, and all the shifters, to the right side of the law. But that plan is being met with resistance and King knows there are many who would like to take them down — and those he cares about along with him. While the story here mostly focuses on King and Emerson, Violet does nicely round the book out with some interesting and creative shifter lore. I also really enjoyed the interplay between King and his brothers. It is clear his family is very important to King and I liked the way they all supported him, but also gave him a hard time when they thought he was wrong.

One of the most ridiculously underdeveloped books I've ever read. Characters, plot, relationship, romance, "suspense" subplot, BDSM, worldbuilding, you name it - it was bad.

A disappointment

I found the BDSM part of this story to be disappointing. King was supposed to be this completely hardass Dom who demanded strict obedience - but the description just didn't match the reality. This book took place over several weeks, if not months (time isn't exactly clear), and there was only the merest token of a hint of Emerson being trained in anything, as a submissive. We got a couple of random spankings, orgasm denial, and an edging session that was supposed to last hours and only made it to about 30 minutes because King couldn't wait.

Unfortunately, so much time and real estate was devoted to this lackluster D/s relationship that there's not much to say about the rest of the story. I liked that Emerson wanted to be a partner to King, as well as his sub, but found it odd that both Emerson and King kept saying that they wanted a much more lifestyle relationship than they actually insisted on having - it was confusing. Also, I really don't buy the whole 'shifters have no magic' thing in a story where shifting clearly causes a change in mass (i.e. avian shifters flying out of small windows), and fated mates being a real thing.

Overall, the story was ok, but I didn't think that it was particularly well plotted and I don't know that I'm curious enough about any of the characters we've met to be interested in reading further in this series.

Not to bad for the second time reading this author.

The world that she built was very different from the ones that I'm used to. For me this book was engaging even though King was a dick and needed Emerson to balance him out. I'm looking forward to the rest of the Howler clans adventures.

My biggest issue with CLAIMING BITE is that there was something off about the BDSM elements and I don't quite know how to explain it. I just know I wasn't feeling totally comfortable with how it was going and how King was acting as a Dom. Emerson wants to learn to be a submissive and he's interested in pain play but there's concern because King is so much stronger as a shifter and usually shifters don't have sex, let alone rough sex, with humans.

As they started exploring their sexual attraction it never felt like King was really teaching Emerson anything and he spent most of their scenes telling Emerson that he should do this specific thing or action because it would make King happy. And yes, making King happy is what Emerson wanted but it just felt like Emerson's needs weren't addressed as their own thing and were instead just something Emerson felt in order to satisfy King. I don't know if any of that makes sense or is even accurate to an actual safe and consensual D/s relationship but that's the best I can do to describe how I felt reading about them.

Additionally, I really didn't like how many secrets King was keeping and his refusal to be honest with Emerson about the danger he was in. King just kept telling him the shifter world was dangerous and that Emerson needed a bodyguard but he never says why (up to the point I read). And poor Emerson is confused about why he's so drawn to King and why he's willing to risk his literal life in order to explore his pain kink with a shifter when really its because he and King are mates but King won't tell him that. Emerson puts all his trust in King from the very beginning and King isn't returning that trust in even the simplest ways.

This one was okay for a mindless, fairly entertaining read. Nothing heavy, no crazy BDSM stuff, pretty basic alpha wolf shifter book. Sex was pretty hot and the characters likable. Overall, not bad.

*I voluntarily read this book. All opinions stated are solely my own and no one else's*

King was controlling, dominant and stubborn and at times a little overbearing. There were times I thought that King would never get his head out of his rear end.

Emerson lived on the edge, as he went head to head with King and was more than happy to live with the consequences.

King and Emerson had great chemistry. The BDSM element in the book consisted of: spanking, flogging, chastity cage, bondage and edging. Their sub/Dom relationship was intense and I liked the fact that Emerson wasn’t afraid to question or challenge King.

I’m kind of conflicted with this review, to be honest. I adore this author’s work but I feel like it missed the mark with ‘Claiming Bite’. The world building—having humans know about shifters but so much fear has led the shifter clans to only be able to survive in the criminal enterprises— is a very interesting one that I’ve not really seen before. So I liked that part. I liked Emerson very much. King is an asshole, no two ways about it, and regardless that he has to be in order to be the head of the shifter council and protect his family... his arrogance just went over-the-top for me.

As to the BDSM... safe, sane, and consensual is held to but Emerson is a complete newbie with only a vague understanding of what he needs and desires. I felt that King could have done more actual instruction and real teaching instead of constantly reminding Emerson that he would do “this” because he wants to make King happy. I’m not really expressing myself well and I apologize for that. Also, this is just my opinion and I’m sure others will feel very differently.

I do hope there will be more to come in this world as I’d love to see mates for a few of the rest of the Howler brothers.

I really enjoyed reading this fascinating MM shifter romance & sincerely hope this is the first book in a new series. I found the story-line & plot quite interesting with a different approach to the shifter/human relationship. The main characters are fairly well-developed with a variety of traits & different sides to their individual personalities. There is good support from the secondary characters.
There is: a dominant but rather solitary alpha werewolf (King) has everything he ever wanted but a submissive fated mate then he meets a bratty young human male (Emerson) & the attractions flare, a conniving lion shifter (Leon), various kinds of shifters, a council, some twists, intrigue, drama, danger, threats, enemies, abduction, conflict, violence, unexpected allies, alliances, heartache, defiance, ultimatums, apologies, domination/submission, BDSM, spanking, punishment, contentment, love, steamy scenes & a wonderful happy ending.

This is the story of King Howler who is the leader of his pack and is trying to quietly move his more shady business dealings into the light. This is met with resistance from the other shifter packs and causes him to be a bit wary of others.
One night Emerson walks into his shifter bar and gets wasted. King is made aware of his presence as he is the subject of a few shifters wanting to do naughty things with him.
King recognises his fated one at first sight. Unfortunately it is not so obvious to Emerson at first glance. It takes a few days for him to start to feel the pull.
This was a good read in the way the author describes the disagreement between packs about how to move forward or to keep the mafia type of existence they already have.
My problem was with the two leads. Although I liked both characters, I found it hard to feel the instantaneous connection between them. I thought that could of used a bit more work.
Enjoyed it.

King didn't walk his BDSM Dom talk. Emerson was a brat. Story became boring. DNF at 60%.

Not a bad start to a new series. Had the elements of everything I love Shifters & BDSM. What’s not to like. I love Silvia take on this stories though. Combining the shifter world with the mafia element of a underworld crime boss. King came across as a sexy domineering Dom/Godfather who you didn’t want to cross or go against or you would reap his wrath.

I love how the book begins inside a BDSM club with King discovering his mate scents. The story progress along very well for a few chapters before I got lost and couldn’t focus. At some point the story drag and I got bored. I was left wanting more. More drama, more action, I wanted more. King began to drive me crazy at some point when he kept refusing to claim his mate. The supporting characters though I love them all. They were one of the main reason that kept me reading on.

Even though we had some scenes of King & Emerson acting’s a few BDSM scenes together. I was left a little disappointed there wasn’t enough hard core BDSM scenes going although King did come close once with Emerson on one of the stretching scenes.

Silvia drop the ball on Kings adversary’s Leon. I did not like the conclusion she came up with him after building his character to be such and adversary to King and the way he challenged King... only to come to that conclusion was disappointing to say the least.

Maybe I need to reread this story in one sitting without having to put the book down to see if I may have missed something. I hoping the next book do not leave me wanting more with the plot scenes.

This was good, but there wasn't much to the story. It starts with Emerson going into King's club and getting harassed by some other club-goers. When King, a wolf shifter, is called over by security to help with the situation, King instantly feels the connection to Emerson, a human, as his mate. From that point on, Emerson goes to live with King and his brothers at their estate. So, there is no backstory on Emerson. He lost his job and has an ex-boyfriend, that's all we know. I really liked Emerson, so I would have liked to get to know him better. There were some BDSM elements to the story--spanking, flogging, orgasm denial--but I didn't feel they were integral to the story.

I liked getting to know King's brothers and watching them all interact, both in human form and wolf form. They're a very close family and I look forward to reading each of their stories.

Happy I finished it

I really liked this book and the author's writing was easy to get sucked into. I had a hard time putting it down, and honestly would have finished it in one night if sleep was a requirement. Having said this i unfortunately have to only give it 4.5 stars instead of 5 because as a person who loves reading D/s books I felt like this was a bit forced in the beginning. Emerson came into this with only fantasies about what he wanted. I felt there should have been a little more time spent on introducing him to what he really wanted/needed and the life style. Other then that it was a nice short read, def worth reading.

Human mate

Emerson is a human that has a fantasy but he quickly finds out more comes with that when he meets King.

I liked the D/s relationship though I wish I could have seen alittle bit more of it. Emerson came in with ideas and they just jumped into the deep end. I also missed out on the big fight scene, I think we all wants that death and then it happened off the pages which was a bit of a let down. I loved seeing the family that surrounded them and I'm can't wait to read the brothers stories.

If you're looking for a story with lots of passion, danger, and steamy scenes, look no further than Claiming Bite. The Alpha, King, was a complicated character torn between his duty as the leader and his love for a human. The only thing negative I have to say about this book is that I wish there was so much more ti this story between King and Emerson. All in all, worth the read.

A very steamy bdsm story of shifter and their mates. This is the first in the series where King leader of the wolf clan and head of the shifter council discovers his true mate is a human . Its well written and I loved it. Highly recommended

This book is a great read with various shifter types, fated mates, mobsters and romance. While some bad things happen this isn’t a very dark story and I can’t wait to read the rest of the series
