This easy-to-use guide is essential to researchers and genealogists pursuing ancestral histories within the Confederate military. Complete with detailed lists of various heritage Web sites, this valuable information can help anyone trace the lineage of their family. It also provides battlefield information and instructions on how to peruse Southern state archives and libraries while also providing an educational approach to indentifying those persons who served in Confederate military units. This book is an outstanding manual for anyone interested in learning about Confederate heredity and makes any quest for knowledge on Southern soldiers a thorough and successful one.
I have several Confederate Ancestors and this book truly helped point me in the right direction. While this edition was updated in 2008 and included a little computer technology, it could use another update now, since tech has evolved significantly in the past 12 years. Nonetheless, genealogy is a labor of looking finding and looking at originals and the manual techniques discussed by Segars can be converted to computer by anyone facile with a computer. Or trust Google to search for you if you are creative. I also have to mention that Segar mentions many additional Confederate (and Northern) Civil War books as resources. Since many are now our of copyright, they can be found online and downloaded for free. Others can be found online and "borrowed" for free. Still others, since they are close to 20 years old or older, can be purchased through discount bookstores at considerable savings.
