He Who types Between the Rows

Rate this book
In January 2006 Mark Sieber created the Horror Drive-In website as a home for his new message board. The site also provided a platform for Sieber to discuss his lifelong books, movies, music, publishing, drive-in theaters, and the horror community. Not merely content to review and comment on the state of the industry, Sieber offered insights and revelations into his own life as a horror devotee. He Who Types Between the Rows offers a tour of the genre from 2006 to 2017. From King and McCammon to newer writers such as Rio Youers and Caroline Kepnes, from Evil Dead to Nudist Colony of the Dead, Sieber's essays cover the vast spectrum of horror in all its forms. This book gives readers a view of the field from the trenches, written by a true fan. So hurry back with your snacks, make one last bathroom stop, and grab that illicit case of beer from the trunk. Showtime is in one minute. This edition includes a Foreword by Jeff Strand, and an Afterword by Thomas F. Monteleone.

He Who Types Between the Rows is a ten-year retrospective of the author’s website, Horror Drive-In. It’s laid out in chronological order, and it’s fascinating to read his thoughts from several years back, like his take on Netflix before it was streaming, and thoughts on rising star authors like Jonathan Janz. The second piece in the book is a rave entitled “Who the Hell is Joe Hill?” written before Seiber knew of Hill’s then-secret lineage.

There are movie and book reviews (I’m making a list as I read), along with tributes to favorite authors, closed bookstores, horror conventions and one very personal essay about the loss of his brother.

I started this book by flipping through the pages and reading whatever titles jumped out at me, but now I’ve gone back to the beginning and I’m reading it as intended — chronologically. As a fan of horror, books and movies, this 10-year retrospective is one of my favorite nonfiction reads of the year.

HE WHO TYPES BETWEEN THE ROWS: A Decade of Horror Drive-In by MARK SIEBER

Mark Sieber's trilogy He Who Types Between the Rows collect his posts from the blog Horror Drive-In.

Many are reminiscences from younger years: Drive-In theaters, grindhouse flea-pits, fun with friends now gone.

Other posts celebrate new and old horror authors. Sieber clearly reads horror like most of us do: purposefully, casually, and therapeutically. New voices excite him, so my own reading list is expanded.

Sieber's tone is confident but relaxed. His pieces recall forgotten pleasures that require cry out for our attention again: fiction, nonfiction, VHS tapes, DVDs and always, always, the Drive-In.

These three collections will take you back. In a good way.

He Who Types Between the Rows: A Decade of Horror Drive-In is a collection of essays by Mark Sieber talking about all things horror over the span of 10 years. And a lot of his essays read like prophecies because he wrote something before it happened (like an upcoming author who would light the scene on fire) or before certain knowledge was officially made public. His insights are spot on and these essays were just so fun to explore. Already looking forward to the 2nd collection of his essays that recently came out.

I didn’t agree with him all the time. I disliked his being stuck in the past but I could tell he understood he was stuck. I got lots of great ideas for new reads. Something I think he would enjoy very much

This isn't a book I sat back and read every night until I finished it. "He who types..." is a very satisfying book I read in between books I read every night and for quick dips of reading. Mark has great tastes in books, movies and even music or if his taste isn't great it certainly matches mine. The book is a lot of short essays that Mark previously posted online that I never came across. They range from book and movie recommendations to dedications over a recent author death, sadly there are many of those. Mark also sheds a little light on who he is so you get to know him better as you read along. If you need ideas for a book to read next or a reminder of all the great books and movies you've read and seen "He who types..." has that and more. I've already bought the next books to continue the journey of Mark's musings.

The book wasn’t exactly what I was expecting. I guess I figured that in a decade there would have been some decent horror movies. I certainly was hoping to discover some movies to watch. No such luck.

It was a different story in regards to books. He covers some of my favorite authors, McCammon and Wilson to name two. And I did find over a dozen books, and two authors, that I plan on looking into.

But I skimmed through many of the chapters, not being into slasher movies or books. And I was put off some books and movies just by their titles. So, sort of 50/50, not great, but not bad. I’ve discovered that there’s a second volume. Will I read it? Not sure.
