Heartfelt Lies

Rate this book
Lies of omission are still lies.

Ella Jones

I'm no stranger to lies. Growing up with an unstable mother will do that. But when tragedy struck, I seized the opportunity to start over in a new town in search of the happiness that evaded me. When I met Kohl, I thought he was the answer. This gorgeous guy with captivating green eyes, he made my palms sweat and heart soar. I had no way to know he had secrets of his own. Just when I’ve found my peace; I discover an intricate web of deceit that could unravel the very fabric of my life.

Kohl Kingsley

I never meant to hurt Ella. From the moment I laid eyes on her, I was drawn by an undeniable attraction. She was the new girl in town, yet there was a small voice in the back of my mind that whispered there was something familiar about her. It didn't take long to put the pieces together. The instant I did, I prayed she would never find out the secrets I was hiding. Now, I will do anything to protect her from the ugly truth that needs to stay buried.

If she discovers my secrets, will she find it in her heart to forgive me? Or will the reality of the past destroy our future?

From Author Alexandra Christopher comes a heart wrenching story about the healing that comes from the anguish of buried truths.

This is part of the Healing Love series but can be read as a standalone. Each novel in the series will feature a new couple.

Not a bad debut book on Kindle Unlimited. The mc’s are young (18-20ish) and it shows with YA vibes… Kohl is very clueless to OW machinations and Ella is a runner… but I read it for the OW drama, and the ex and BFF run circles around these two. And although YA isn’t my thing, I do have more patience with 18–20-year-olds acting immature than 30-year-olds. 🤷‍♀️

Kohl wasn't bad. It felt like he was always in trouble, but most of that was because he's blind to being manipulated, and his girlfriend is very sensitive. He did all the heavy lifting, chasing, reassuring, and coddling.

Ella has some issues. She had a neglectful mom that commits suicide in the prologue, and I know this is going to make me sound like a heartless bitch, but I felt like her trauma from that was a smidge overplayed. Lots of people have less than desirable childhoods and possess some coping skills… and don’t sit around constantly feeling sorry for themselves. I think it bugged me because we’re CONSTANTLY TOLD how strong and resilient Ella is, but CONSTANTLY SHOWN her crying, bemoaning, shutting down/running, and needing time to process every little setback… and that got old.

But if you can avoid getting too hooked by that and enjoy evil wannabe OW shenanigans, Kennedy and Lily won’t disappoint.

Bottom Line- This is a newer author, and it shows, so if you prefer a rock solid/super polished book… this probably isn’t for you. If you want loads of deep feels and development… this probably isn’t for you. Some of the drama/reactions felt contrived (especially the last conflict) and at times the h’s need to process and avoid discussing things slowed the flow down. But if you’re entertained by drama-llama (think 90210)… you might give it a shot. If you enjoy the clueless H with a wannabe OW via his BFF he looks at as a sister that’s secretly in love with him dynamic. You might look at Molly and Flower.

Eh, going to delete my negative review. This is someone’s first book.
Just gonna put here that I didn’t feel the love due to the writing style, and I found the h a doormat.

I did like the ow drama and the angst from their conflict, since I am on an angst binge at the moment.

This is a YA book.
H20- h 18.
Love scenes are steamy.

Safety
He unintentionally emotionally cheats, but not physically.
One of the OW is his first love, so the h is his second love. The ow broke up with him.

My rating: 4 stars

What I liked: I liked how strong Ella(h) was and communicated with Kohl(H) when he would screw up. I really liked when Kohl finally told Lily (best friend who is in love with) that she was no longer his friend.

What I didn’t like: H was totally blind and made some stupid choices (he really needed to put them in there places) I also wanted more of a confrontation with the ex.

How hot was it: 2 out 5

————————————————-SPOILERS—————————————-

Triggers: OW drama. Two women cause problems for H and h. First is an ex that wants him back (he catches his ex and a friend having sex and flips out when he finds out they were sleeping together while H was dating her, this makes H mad and he rips the guy out and beats him up yelling “you slept with my girl”) this makes h think the H still has feelings for ow. The second is his best friend who is love with him. The H in the beginning goes jet skiing when he was supposed to go out with the h (the h catches him) later H goes on vacation with a group of friends and ow (best friend) gets drunk and kisses him. The ex videos it and sends it to h. Lastly, ow(best friend) tells h that H’s dad killed her dad which wasn’t what actually happened (this causes them to break up for about 3 months) Death of both parents.

Final thoughts: I really enjoyed this book, I just needed a little more of a confrontation, I especially would have loved for the h to have witness it. I will definitely read more from this author.

Not amazing but enjoyable enough. I didn't connect deeply with the characters. It had a YA feel to it even though this is NA. The mains, Ella & Kohl, are both in college; she's 18-19 and he's 20. I don't usually read about this age group anymore, but I didn't realize that's what this was going in. Maybe that's why for me, it felt surface-level? I wasn't overly invested in the story. Still, it didn't turn me off reading it. I was curious about the angsty drama is supposedly had. The first part was slow, with not much really happening and too much inner-monologuing. Later, I did really enjoy the OW drama. Yeah, I'm one of those readers 😆

Kohl was a sweet guy. In my opinion, he never truly messed up. His trouble were the girls terribly obsessed with him--an ex and his BF. They plotted against him and Ella at every turn. He might have been oblivious about his BF being in love with him, but I can understand how he never saw how conniving she was all along. I thought Ella was a decent heroine. She wasn't a weakling. If she kept giving Kohl another chance it was because he actually did have some damn good explanations and he always seemed sincere and extremely apologetic. I was never annoyed by the mains' actions or decisions. They were both victims of those plotting witches.

The angst was good which is why I’m rounding off to 4 Stars. Kohl's declarations of love, loyalty, and devotion to Ella, were sweet, believable, and satisfying. It's not 5 Stars simply because I never once felt deeply about the story. Angst, yes; love, no. Not going to lie, I skimmed some.

Sweet HEA with 2 short epilogues: "2 1/2 Years Later", and "4 Years Later."

Debut author? Well, color me impressed! Heartfelt Lies was well written and deeply engaging. If I had to pick one word to describe it, it would be emotional. Because it evoked a lot of emotion from me—sometimes I felt sad, happy, and annoyed. Very well rounded, as you can see.

Let’s start with the good. The story was one that I felt really brought out the love and connection that two characters can have upon meeting each other. I liked that Ella was a strong and independent woman. You sometimes get books where authors claim the heroine is a badass... and she’s just not. Ella, I’m happy to admit, was great! Kohl is dreamy, kind, and an all around good guy. Next book boyfriend for sure!

With that being said, I’m going to contradict myself for a second. I wasn’t a fan of the insta-love aspect of the book. I never have been. Of course there are exceptions to that rule. I’ve liked—even loved—some stories that dealt with characters seemingly falling in love at first sight. This book isn’t exactly love at first sight but they have an instant connection that I didn’t feel was genuine. It takes a lot for me to be on board with that kind of connection in a romance and I just wasn’t sold on it here.

Of course, I’m gonna contradict myself again and say that I was able to overlook everything once I could fully connect to the two characters. The love they had was real, raw, and true. By the end, I truly believed that their love one of light and goodness. And all the yummy and sexy things in between!

Overall, this is for the readers who dare to dream and aren’t afraid of going after what they want. Maybe you’ll see a part of yourselves in Ella—who is as badass as they come. Or even better, you’ll find a Kohl all for you own!

*Thank you to the author for providing a free copy for an honest and unbiased review. All thoughts and opinions are completely subjective but are my own.

"We all make mistakes. It's those mistakes that are made out of the fear of hurting the ones we love that are worthy of forgiveness."

Ella's life has revolved around lies. So now that she has a second chance of a new start, she's not expecting to build that new foundation on more lies. Kohl felt a deep connection with Ella at first glance but isn't life ironic when he discovers that he has the power to destroy Ella's new beginning. Alexandra Christopher manages to pull of dramatic situations with a sense of realism in a way that it's clap worthy. I loved the characters connection, I hate when miscuminacation between characters is used as a main plot. So I really appreciated as a reader how well the two MC's communicated, even in the mists of dramatic and tough situations. With the ever present subject of lies, it got me thinking: are we justified to keep things that are only going to be hurtful to the ones we love? Do we tell them these hurtful things for their benefit or are we honest to appease our own guilt? Things were kept out of selfish and selfless reasons but with that comes forgiveness and I really liked how forgiving those we love and ourselves was handled in this book.
I can't wait for Reeds book, guys best friends really are the best and Kennedy I really hope your skank ass gets an STD!

Raw and emotional.
Ela's mother died because she was a drunk and now the heroine lives with her grandmother. She thinks that she is the one to blame for her mother's death because she did not take good care of her. She doesnt know her father because her mother did not say a thing to her about him. She is now finding out that he was killed when her mother was pregnant.

Kohl works at a construction company., for his father. He meets Ela and instantly likes her and wants to protect her. He has an ex-girlfriend that is still hoping to be with him and a possessive BFF, and also a secret that could cause him to lose her* something about her father's death. *

This one was just ok, some sweet moments, instant love from H but way over the top drama from not just one OW but 2! first the H's ex g/f and from his best friend (female) who was in love with the clueless H. Felt H didnt push enough to have h involved with his established friendship group. Sweet relationship between h and her newly discovered grandmother.
Book/story was not bad, just something missing, hard to say but overall not bad either.

A raw and emotional story that will touch your heart and soul. It will take your breath away.

When tragedy hits home Ella carries a burden of guilt on her shoulders. She must learn to forgive herself before she can forgive others.

Kohl is a hardworking young man who works at a construction company. He and his friends like to party and go on adventures. He notices a new girl in town. Beautiful and mysterious. He feels as though he needs to protect her. He also has a secret that could cause him to lose her.

As their relationship grows there are obstacles that are thrown in their path to destroy them. Jealousy, vindictiveness, lies revealed, secrets exposed and deceit.

Will Ella be able to for Kohl for his lie by ommission.

Sometimes things aren't always as they appear. Would you reveal a secret in order to make yourself feel free of guilt knowing it would devastate the one you love?

I can't wait for Reed and Emerson's story!!

This was decent. Definitely very YA though. Very steamy for a 20 and 18 yr old 😂. I was never this mature. But the H Kohl did keep messing up with his ex girlfriend and best friend. I wasn't sure if he was just naive or stupid 🤷🙈. Everyone was warning him about them, but he never listened. Kinda drove me nuts. Ella was very mature for her age, but also a little skittish. Rightfully so though with her childhood. Though I think she was too hard on Kohl when she ran away after learning the secret he kept from her. She shouldn't have blamed him for everything which she unfortunately did. If she placed blame anywhere it should have been with Kohl's dad.

Though the love scenes were steamy, I wasn't really feeling good chemistry between them. It was definitely instalove, but because of Ella's skittishness, and Kohl's fuck up's they didn't really seem that compatible unfortunately.

Overall it was an enjoyable read just more leaning towards YA

I’m really not sure what I just read. Look it delivered on OW drama x 2 but it just felt childish and petty… It missed the mark for me. And the ‘lie’ didn’t really make sense. I can understand being upset over it but it was a little OTT for an adult a YA yes but adult none the less

Emotional and Beautiful

Hot Damn!!! This story is attention-grabbing, with raw and emotional moments.
Heartfelt Lies is a YA/new adult book, where the heroine Ella experiences neglect, loss, and heartbreak. I felt more connected to Ella than Kohl because of the struggles and life's unfair curve balls thrown her way.
I will admit, I wasn't a fan of Kohl, he’s just bland and lackluster.
Besides that, I enjoyed the storyline.

Wow! I can’t believe this is a debut novel! Heartfelt Lies is such an emotional and moving story! I’m pretty sure I had tears in my eyes for the last half of the book. (I’m an emotional reader 🤷🏼‍♀️) it’s about being strong, finding your inner strength and above all...forgiveness. As we get older, we learn to keep our circles small, wayyyyy less drama and more sincere friendships. Ella’s circle is small to begin with, but that was something that Kohl has to deal with.

“Even if the reason is heartfelt, a lie of omission is still a lie.”

Ella hasn’t had the best childhood. When her mother dies, a series of events brings to light that she has been lied to all of her life. When the person she loves most life withholds something significant from her, she has to figure it having him in her life is worth it.

“What's left of my heart is telling me to never give up but my brain tells me it's over.”

Kohl and Ella have an instant connection from the first time they meet. It’s not insta love, but a meeting of two souls finding each other. Their journey to love is filled with ex girlfriend, drama galore and secret that could end it all. When that secret comes out, are they going to survive? Will Ella be able to forgive him? Will Kohl be able to forgive himself? Does love really conquer all?

“If there's one thing I know for certain, it's this—life may not always be easy, things won't always go as planned, but if you surround yourself with the ones you love, it'll always be worth it.”

Wise words, from a wise person. It really sums up this book perfectly in my eyes.

I loved Ella and Kohl’s story. I was hooked from page one. I can’t wait to read more from this author! I really, really hope that we get to read more about Reed and Emerson 😉

Lots of angst and steam!

Ella and Kohl meet not long after Ella gets to town and the attraction is instant and the chemistry hot. However, both Ella and Kohl have a lot of baggage in their way. Ella has family history and toxic things in her past that she is working to overcome, and Kohl has a former girlfriend unwilling to let him go and a female best friend that is a little too friendly. I'm a huge fan of other woman drama and interference and was in the mood for this kind of read. I love the angsty emotions you get every time Kohl makes a choice that lands him in hot water with Ella, sometimes not completely of his own making because of the two women not wanting him to have a new girlfriend. It was almost a little over the top at times, and I'm never a fan of long separations, but I did enjoy this and will look for more by this author to read soon.

3.5-4 stars. This kind of plot is my jam. New-to-town Ella Jones is trying to restart her life after leaving behind some less-than-stellar memories. She didn't have the best upbringing, but she's not the type to wallow in self-pity. Kohl Kingsley is a longtime local who is earning his way through his job with his dad. He's been burned in the past so he's not looking for anything serious at the moment. Yet when he sees Ella, he's immediately smitten. I enjoyed the aspect of them getting to know each other and having to fend off drama through Kohl's ex girlfriend and female best friend. Kohl meant well and tried to do the right thing, yet it kept backfiring and hurting Ella in the process. I admired her spirit in terms of laying down the law of what she would not tolerate. I couldn't even hate Kohl because he wanted to be a good guy, yet he needed to set boundaries. They had a great connection and chemistry, the writing was fitting for a debut novel, yet I still enjoyed the book and felt that the characters were adequately developed and likable.

Perfect Debut novel

HEARTFELT LIES
was a wonderful and emotional debut novel from Alexandra Christopher. Heartfelt is the perfect way to describe this story, heartstrings are certainly pulled on from the very first page.

For as long as she can remember Ella Jones' life has never been easy. Raised by a single mum, but never feeling loved, Ella wishes for more. Rocked by a tragic event, Ella finds herself in a new town amongst unfamiliar people. She also discovers that her life has been built on a foundation of lies, everything she has ever been told has been a lie. Now she has the chance for a new beginning, but first she must learn how to heal internally and then forgive others.

A move to Gale, Kentucky changes her world when she meets Kohl Kingsley. Kohl is a student who also works for his father's construction company and is instantly drawn to Ella from the minute he lays his eyes on her. owever, when he realises who she is he knows that he has a secret that he must tell her, but he knows his secret will devastate her even more. Kohl feels extremely protective of Ella and will do anything to prevent her heart breaking even further. When Ella discovers Kohl's secret will she be able to forgive him for not telling her? What does Kohl's father have to do with Ella's past?

This was a truly beautiful story. Ella and Kohl's relationship goes through many evolving stages and there are many hurdles to be jumped. Friends become jealous and vindictive ... especially ex-girlfriends ... one who I would really like to punch. Best friends are both extremely supportive and highly jealous.

I absolutely loved this book. Ms Christopher has an easy to read writing style, her charcters are realistic and well developed, she writes with pure emotion enabling her readers to feel what her characters are experiencing.

I'm really looking forward to reading the next book in the series which involves Ella's best friend Reed and Emerson.

A highly recommended read.

This book was a great first read from this author. Her writing style is so good and she really manages to capture you as a reader.
The story is about Ella, a young girl who you really do feel for. She hadn’t had the best start in life and yet she still manages to be such a sweetheart. She’s a truly lovely character who is strong. Events lead Ella to leave her home and move in with her grandmother in a new town and having to start over. Whilst there she meets the very dreamy Kohl and the two are instantly drawn to to each other.
The attraction and chemistry between them obvious from the start.
However Kohl knows something from Ella’s past that could potentially shatter any happiness they have together.
But the connection between the two of them is hopefully enough to keep them strong.
I’d also like to congratulate the author for writing a character like Kennedy who really manages to get under your skin and be someone who you really despise.
I’m excited to see what’s in store for Reed in book 2.

I wanted to like this, but the H kept pissing me off.

I hate when their dumbasses are so clueless, even when multiple people tell them that they're being stupid.

Constantly putting other's feelings ahead of the h because they don't want to cause waves or whatever is so dumb.

The Ex needed therapy or something. Why was she so obsessed with him? She was only faithful to him for the first year of their 4 year relationship! And with his friend!? I wanted to see more of what the friend had to say for himself. We never see him again.

How did Lucy and her family find out about what happened to h's father? Was that addressed, and I missed it? What was the fallout from that? Did they ever get their just deserts?

I admired h's resolve for honesty, but there are other important factors in a relationship, such as respect. I just got annoyed with how often H hurt her, and she let it go because he was honest.
