I told a friend I wanted a lighthearted, humorous read, and she suggested I try this one. I’ll admit, at around 10% I told myself if it didn’t hook me at 15%, I’d put it down. Next time I looked, I was at 33%. Things definitely hit the ground running at that point and didn’t stop until the end.

In considering this book as a whole, it is definitely a women’s fiction book, and not one I recommend for teens. There is a bit of discussion about consummating marriage and the wife seducing her husband (which, in context, is for a husband and wife and nothing immoral). Overall the romance thread is a bit stronger in this book.

I deeply appreciated the characters’ constant turning to God and seeking Him. Some of the characters did seem to have a genuine faith and not just a few convenient words here and there. However, there is a slight bit of confusion because one of the characters lies about an immoral sin, she it doesn’t seem as if she feels convicted over it.

Just one word on Larry: creep! He was authentic and I hated him. Yet found his story so sad.

I loved this book WAY MORE than the first one. If this book was made into a movie, I would buy it! I could see it playing out in my head the entire story.

I love Opal and Willa. Both of them are spitfires in a "quite defiance" sort of way and it was so nice to read about.

I'm curious to see what I think of the last book, since I didn't really care for the first one. Let's hope I like that one a lot too!

Book Description:
Two feuding families, the Specks and the Grogans, have been maintaining a tenuous peace in the Nebraskan Territory of 1857. So when Adam Grogan gets caught trespassing on their land, he knows the murderous Speck men won't listen to reason and let him walk away. Adam's prepared to meet his maker, but things take a turn when Opal Speck declares he's the father of her unborn child. Will Adam accept the slur to his name and marry the girl in order to save his life? Or will Opal's desperate lie ignite the flames of hatred to an all-out war?
My Review:
Kelly Eileen Hake has written a beautiful historical romance in The Bride Backfire. The feuding families bring a unique twist to this romantic relationship. The characters of Opal and Adam, both wanting peace, are caught in the middle of the violent hatred between their families. The tension builds to an explosive level when Opal steps in to save Adam’s life, but the lies she tells have consequences, and in the process she loses Adam’s trust and respect. Opal not only has to overcome the challenges of her relationship with Adam, but also living with a family that hates her simply because she is from the wrong family.

I enjoyed this very well-written story. The characters of the two families and Opal’s friends are diverse in personality and moral fiber. The book clearly demonstrates Biblical consequences of hate, lies, and jealousy, but also what is possible with love and forgiveness. The Bride Backfire is a lovely, romantic tale, and I hope the characters of Opal and Adam are included in another book in the future

In Nebraska Territory, 1857, there is a longstanding feud between two neighboring families, the Specks and the Grogans. When Opal Speck’s father discovers Adam Grogan on their property, he threatens to kill him. Opal saves Adam’s life the only way she can think of: by lying that he is the father of her unborn child. Thanks to her lie, Adam’s life is saved, but it also results in Opal and Adam being forced into a shotgun marriage.

From the start, Adam doesn’t want a real marriage. Not realizing that Opal made up the entire story to save his life, he believes that Opal is pregnant with another man’s child, and her purpose in lying was to give her child a name. He is frustrated that Opal continues to refuse to tell him who the child’s real father is. Opal doesn’t know how to tell Adam that what he is believing is wrong, that she isn’t pregnant and only wished to save him from her angry father. When she begins to fall in love with her husband and longs for their marriage to be a real marriage, but she doesn’t know if Adam, who was forced to marry her, could ever love her for real. Can she manage to set things right with him?

The Bride Backfire is an enjoyable western romance for readers who like inspirational romances or clean love stories that don‘t have graphic adult content. At times I got frustrated with Opal and wished she’d just tell Adam the truth already, but that didn’t keep me from enjoying the story, and I would give other books by this author a try.

After reading an ARC version of the first book in the Prairie Promises Series, "The Bride Bargain", I was confused at two name changes, but that happens and it is my on fault for getting distracted and forgetting that had been an advanced reader copy before final edits.

In this story once again readers are treated with descriptions of food and cooking of recipes on the prairie that bring interest and cause a mouth to water. There were more in the first book, yet this one also offered descriptions of bee-keeping that I never knew before or rather had even thought to ask. It was fascinating.

This book brought a much deeper intrigue for me than the first as I honestly had no clue what would happen in the end of of any of the twists and turns to get there. That impresses me in a novel. I enjoyed picking up on the lives of characters I had met in the first book of the series and applaud Kelly's descriptions of their inner thoughts through what could only be reference as difficult situations. Scripture lessons on life and shocking surprises are woven through the page of this novel and I look forward to the final installment of the trilogy and of more to come from author Kelly Eileen Hake in the future.

This book was big on confusion, too many names to remember and a very simple plot. It just kept going on and on, would she tell, would she not tell? For 286 pages the insanity continued about whether Opal's lie about being with child in order to save the family would backfire on her. Her husband didn't believe her, then he did and back and forth and on and on. Written on a fourth grade level and not worth the time.

The Bride Backfire is a Hatfield/McCoy fueding story, except Miss Hake's families are the Specks vs. the Grogans. Quirky characters and two families bent on obliterating the other add for humorous situations and heartfelt drama, especially when young men and women from opposite families develop an attraction to one another. This is a cute story.

Far better than the first. In fact, when these Main characters were introduced in book one on the side, I instantly wanted to know more about THEM. Adam had a solid presence. Steadfast Opal made herself known.

Feuding families!?!? Sign me up! Loved this TENSION throughout. And we have a “despicable” villain/anti-hero duo. (Talk about a nasty mother-in-law!) The MC motivations were 🤌🏼. The whole idea of just throwing them together worked.

Did it anger me that Opal didn’t tell the truth? YES. Did it bother me Adam was too honorable/blind/stubborn to see the truth? YES.
Did it all end too quickly? YES.
Yet, you understand, because these characters are operating on the fears that their families will “literally kill” each other if the truth comes out!

Midge makes her return as the saucy and devious friend who tries to help Opal become more attractive to her husband… but these plans get foiled most times, demonstrating that everything could have been solved if the MCs just told the truth/openly communicated! But honestly, these interactions fueled the chemistry btwn the MCs, and made me laugh.

Also, I was recognizing a lot of parallels with OT biblical stories. Mother scheming for her son Jacob, Adam as a farmer, the snakes in the desert wilderness, Ruth & Boaz… you can see the Scriptural inspiration.

Again, the book ended rapidly, and this time, I did think a couple loose ends should have been tied up. i.e. - What happens to the mothers-in-law? & We needed more exposition on Willa’s relationship.

Overall, a good story.

I must admit, I felt...mislead by the front cover quote from Romantic Times as this being "a witty, laugh-out loud, rollercoaster...". I actually found this story a little heartbreaking. The feud between the Grogan and Speck families is legendary in the small town. But not all of the family members understand the WHY of the feud. Why must they hate one another? Why can't they live with civility?

I honestly think that allowing the feud to go on and the hatred to go unchecked between the families has poisoned Lucinda Grogan's mind (the mother of the Grogan clan). And, in turn, the mind of her middle son, Larry. There were small sections which came off as 'light humor', but the dislike and lies voiced/acted upon by both Lucinda and Larry overshadowed the lightness the marketing of this piece may have intended.

The story was well written. The characters were believable. I was just expecting something different. I read this story as a stand alone title.

This one wasn't as good as the first book in the series. The first one was just so funny with the hilarious situations that Clara got into while trying to match-make. They almost set up her adopted daughter, Midge, to be the matchmaker in this one and it doesn't fully work. There is a lot of miscommunications in this one and it made me frustrated, I mean I guess that would be expecting too much for feuding people to talk. Adam and Opal end up with a shotgun marriage and a lot of miscommunications. They have been the peacekeepers in their families for a while and now it is sometimes easier and sometimes more difficult to keep the peace because they are married. Are they happy? Can they find a way? Read to find out. ha.
It is a rather sweet story; beneath all the stress, upset feelings, and antagonism. I look forward to reading the last one and hope it is good.

This needs to be read!

I love that this author tackles topics that can be difficult to face but she does and shows you how with Faith without being preachy. I don't love that reviews show this as a comedy in some way because I don't think the lies, abuse, and casual way the issue of sex outside of marriage is addressed is humourous at all. Needs to be talked about and I liked the way she did it, I really liked the book ( Don't let me scare you off). Just wish for more honesty.

This is one of those stories that you just have to stop and take a breath. 😔 I cheered so hard for these two but at one point I had had enough of Larry and his Mama and I almost stopped reading altogether.😑 Their interference was making me so MAD😤 and that was when I realized how much I loved this story. 😊 The ending chapters were a surprise 😦 and I almost felt sorry for Larry but at the same time I remembered Opals bruises and it passed. 😒 By far my favorite of the series so far. 😉

I enjoyed the first book of the series more but this second book further develops Midge's character and involves the two peacemakers of feuding families. A lie is told to save a life which inhibits the growth of the peacemakers' relationship. Midge tries to help her friend by giving her tips on being more seductive, but every trick in the book falls flat on it's face. In the background, a sinister danger lurks close by and threatens to strangle any chance of happiness.

This second book of the series didn't disappoint!

I absolutely love this author's writing style! This book pulled me into the mix of these feuding families, the history and bad blood between them. Such a great book, the second in this series. I liked book 1 and this one was even better and I didn't think that was even possible! You won't be disappointed!

I liked that there were bees (an apiary) in this story and there were lots of secrets and suspense that kept me turning pages. I would have liked to see a happier ending, but over all, it was a good book.

Lots of drama. Tackled the mature theme of illegitimate pregnancy as well as family feuds. Trope: miscommunication and reading into the significant other's motives, half-truths, and silences.

Historical Western American christian romance set in 1857 in the mostly settled Nebraskan Territory.
We get the classic feuding families that neighbor each other and occasionally threaten death to each other, until the next generation comes along and falls in love with a Romeo and Juliette style of shotgun wedding.
Opal Speck and Adam are trying to keep the peace in their families so they marry based on a pile of lies so it isn't a surprise that this is a 'clean' romance because until they start telling the truth, they don't make a real marriage. Adam and Opal have more problems with their crazy families, but they do have some allies in Adam's sister Willa and Opal's big brother Ben, who end up getting their own surprise wedding as well.
The Christian themes are very heavily laced into the story which felt very realistic to that time period, but I didn't love the characters as much as the clean Christian themed books of Karen Witemeyer like a similar in plot story of Short-Straw Bride which was very good.

I had the privilege of interviewing Kelly Eileen Hake, on our radio show "Kingdom Highlights", for her new book, "The Bride Backfire", Book Two in her, "Prairie Promises" series published by Barbour. Within these pages Ms. Hake takes us back to Buttonwood, Nebraska and continues the adventures begun in the first book. This is a stand alone story so you do not need to read the first one but you will be depriving yourself of the fun if you do.

The Specks and the Grogans, two families of Buttonwood have been feuding for so long they have forgotten the cause of the feud but, yet, they maintain it. Opal Speck is in love with Adam Grogan but neither can admit it, to themselves or to their families. When Adam Grogan, in an attempt to stop bloodshed, enters Speck land he is caught and about to be shot when Opal comes to his rescue. The only way she can save his life is by saying he is the father of her unborn child. In what is literally a shotgun wedding the parson is called and the two are married. However that is just the start of the problems.

This is the story of honoring one parents and at the same time leaving the family and cleaving to the wife and honoring the husband. It is a story of unhealed trauma and how that causes bitterness and it is a story of romance and how love will overcome all obstacles that come before it.

The Bride Blunder is a deeply moving story of how God wants to cleanse us of all our wounded emotions and restore us to Himself and to each other. Ms. Hake has done an excellent job.

After a bit of encouragement from a friend I decided to continue in this series and boy howdy, am I glad I did! I loved this story and can't wait to get to #3. Thanks to Net Galley for my digital edition for this review. I grew up in Kentucky all around the Hatfield and McCoy Feud stories but this one takes the cake. Opal Speck and Adam Grogan try to be each family's peacemaker in the Speck-Grogan feud that has gone on for generations. Each one struggles inwardly to have faith that God is stronger, even when on the wrong side of a gun, so to speak. These two have grown up with all the angst and danger of the feud and numerous digs from each side to fuel the flame for all their years, so they trust no one. The entire town distances themselves-even at church. So when Opal and Adam show up at church having been 'privately' married just days before, the whole town is knocked off kilter. Is the feud over? Has it begun anew? Why did they get married?

Well, you'll just have to read it to find out. It's another I-couldn't-put-it-down-even-at-2am-and-then-hit-it-again-for-breakfast book. And the heat factor!!! Where's my fan...The sexual tension starts in chapter two for Pete's sake and ends with the last sentence in the book, my word! Which, by the way, is the most irritating way to end a book-just when the two characters....well, I don't want to be accused of putting in a spoiler. Suffice it to say I wanted one more chapter-the tidy bow on this gift.

I commented on The Bride Bargain's cover not being to my liking in that book's review. This one's cover at least made sense to me and I liked the picture of the dugout but the rendering of Opal is lacking somehow, just as the one of Clara is on The Bride Bargain. Just sayin', you know?
