Nate Temple #8

War Hammer

Rate this book
Two old dudes want to kill me. Oh, and one of them is my ancestor…

And after centuries of practice, they’re pretty good at the whole murder thing. But at least they want to kill each other just as badly.

Now, I’ve taken down a Greek Goddess, worn a Horseman’s Mask, and I ride a homicidal unicorn who hates rainbows with a passion. Some might say sending two senior citizens to a permanent retirement home should be a breeze.

It ain’t.

Because that’s not my biggest concern. One of my friends is in danger, or possibly dying, and I need to get her back before her fiancé kills me. But finding her introduces me to new worlds of pain. The biggest of these being my own past—which has been a blatant lie—and a parting gift from my parents—which might have just been the coin toss for the Apocalypse Olympics.

I’m beginning to realize that none of the old Gods, Legends, or Monsters have been idle the last few centuries. They’ve been waiting, picking sides, and scheming schemes.

Of course, maybe one of those two old dudes will punch my ticket and save me the headache. A wizard can Hope, right? Because either way, I’m about to have a very bad series of days…

Why aren't there more people reading this?!

The world is a sad, unjust place if series (and authors) like this one aren't more popular.

This series is part of a whole Universe. The books intertwine, but I'm not sure if I will read the other series now or if I'll leave them for when I'm looking for an amazing time.

Anyway, all I can suggest is
READ THIS SERIES!

This is the eighth book in the Nate Temple series. Nate is enjoying a very brief respite with his friends, waiting until he can rescue one his friends before something terrible happens to her in Fairy. But after getting ready and making the trip, Nate finds out more truths about his past, truths that change things. Will his friends and enemies be ready for the changes or will more gods fall? I never know what to say when a series goes this long that I haven’t said before. But, since this book followed the trend and was the best book so far, I have to give it my best shot. Wow, just wow! Yes, this book wasn’t as action-packed as his others (don’t get me wrong, there was plenty of action, just not as non-stop), but there was so much growth with the characters that needed to happen, especially with one, which I can’t say too much about as I don’t want to spoil it. The revelations in this book were very surprising, and to tell the truth, I wasn’t sure that Mr. Silvers could surprise me so much…you would think I’d know that by now, wouldn’t you?!? As with all the books I’ve read by this author, this one was well-written, great fun, and very hard to put down; it had all the things that make a book fantastic and it definitely was! If you are a fan of this series, you will love this book as much as I did. If you haven’t started this series yet, do so, and start from the beginning, as this series is one of the best!! Highly recommend! Thanks to the author for the e-book which I reviewed voluntarily.

Finally, Nate Temple starts to get some answers about his past and his family’s past. Some. It’s not necessarily what you think. It’s not what he expected.

Also, spurred by conversations with Callie Penrose and with Pestilence, who also wants to take the name Conquest, he again makes something of an effort to grow up, at least in relation to how he handles his friends and supporters. Callie has suggested that Nate needs to tell his friends more often that he appreciates them. Just theoretically being ready to die for them isn’t enough.

This is not to say that there is any less of Nate’s caustic wit in this book. In fact, it just may be the funniest of the Nate Temple series so far.

There are somewhat fewer heart-stoppingly terrifying moments in this book as well. But that does not mean that there aren’t instances of real danger as Nate and his friends return to the land of the Fae with an item that was stolen from them long ago and that the Fae have been looking for ever since. And with Matthias still running around mad with grief, and the implacable Castor Queen constantly trying to kill both him and Nate, there is still a lot for a wizard, or a horseman, or a Wylde Fae, or a godkiller to do.

You know that feeling you get when cold weather arrives, and you slip on that lovingly battered leather jacket? You get that feeling of amusement, of home, not only because of the look and the feel, but also because of the silent acknowledgement of the miles you have traversed together and the miles you have yet to encounter. That's the feeling I get opening a new Temple Chronicles book.
War Hammer raises the stakes, blowing everything you think you know out of the water. You think the crew descends just to save a friend, while the reality is that they find and save a piece of themselves. All to face the fallout involving tiny gods. Be ready to run the emotional gamut.

Once more, Silvers finds a way to rattle his status quo and stir up his world building. While not the titanic jumps in stakes or dynamic turn-arounds of some of the previous books, this one works on a (slightly) more subtle level, instead focusing heavily on the characters and dealing with the developments of their relationships in regards to prior events, and with new events that shed light on their history in ways they'd never imagined. The focus on characters over the fighting, though plenty of that still comes up, is a welcome addition given the tumultuous nature of everything in the last few books, and helps re-establish the development of many of the secondary characters who had been slipping into the background.

Silvers is also holding his stride with his overlapping protagonist interactions, Callie Penrose once again making an appearance and setting up another small but important building block in her relationship with Nate Temple, helping him re-establish his humanity a bit with his family and friends. Her part is significant for Nate but not overplayed, and Silvers manages the timeline between their series like a well handled juggling act, not giving any spoilers for her storyline but showing that she is also still growing and developing in her own way during all of Nate's adventures so the balance of power, experience and maturity between the two of them remains a close balance.

The books is also of course rife with hints as to the things coming in the future, Silvers likely looking to ratchet up the stakes a few more times before any of it starts to really unfold directly. Things are again pushing towards new revelations and for everything answered, more questions appear. Overall the book doesn't disappoint in any regard, and as always I look forward to what Silvers does next.

Best one yet!

How can I express the wonder of this book without including spoilers? It will be difficult, but everyone should be able to experience the magic without foreknowledge of any of the outcomes.

Mr. Silvers wields a scythe sharp with wit and a lance punching through the mists to deliver a story satisfying in every way. I've grown to love these characters like family and await each installment as if waiting for a phone call from a beloved brother. His stories take me away from the tedium of real life and propel me into a world where anything is possible.

While this book can be read as a stand-alone, you will appreciate the story more if you know the previous history. If you read this book first, give yourself the pleasure of going back and starting the journey afresh with Obsidian Son (I mean, who could resist cow-tipping the Minotaur?). Nate grows with each book until he becomes the beloved rogue you find in this book.

Love this series....

Love this series but hate when there is long lag time for the Author's release of the next book. I read so much and usually have at least 4 books that I'm reading simultaneously. So if there are slow release dates on series books....I forget a lot of the important details in the plots and sometimes need to read the first and last chapters of the last book in order to jog my memory. This means I have to keep the last book in the series rather than returning it since I am on the Kindle Unlimited plan. If I am reading several series, this means holding on to several books. Just inconvenient but this book was entertaining and even though series books can get old after awhile, I haven't hit that wall in this series yet!!

Oh, this is a FUN one!

I obtained this book through the Kindle Unlimited program.
I selected it because it is a finalist for the 2018 Dragon Award in the 'Best Fantasy Novel (Including Paranormal)' category. And the review will be SHORT because I'm under a deadline.
However, a MUCH better treatment is available at my blog, Papa Pat Rambles.

This book is number 8 in the series, and when I discovered that, I was a bit put off, thinking I was going to be lost.

That turned out not to be the case.

I wish I could analyze the technique, but I can't, because this is a book review, and not an author review. Sufficient to say that WHATEVER, HOWEVER he did it, starting with book number 8 in the series caused no problem for this reader.

Nate Temple is a man with strange friends, strange enemies, and a strange person who fixes the wall around his property. He risks a dangerous trip into the land of the Fae, to rescue one of those friends, and there he discovers secrets about his life he had never suspected.
And fights battles.

Just get the book. Get the SERIES of books. Then, get the other series.

A good candidate for the award!

A wild ride

Shayne Silvers once again proves why the TempleVerse remains one of the most dynamic and engaging urban fantasy series out there. Blood Debt takes readers on another wild ride, with Nate Temple’s story shifting in unexpected ways that keep fans hooked from start to finish.

As always, Silvers masterfully balances action, humor, and heart, ensuring readers stay on the edge of their seats. Nate’s growth—both as a character and in terms of his ever-evolving power set—keeps the story fresh and unpredictable. And let’s talk about that budding romance—Silvers delivers all the feels, adding a new layer of depth to Nate’s journey.

The side characters continue to shine, bringing their own wit, charm, and badassery to the table. Every interaction feels meaningful, and the dynamics within Nate’s circle remain as entertaining as ever. And that ending? Absolutely did not see it coming. Silvers knows exactly how to drop a bombshell that leaves readers desperate for the next installment.

Overall, Blood Debt is another fantastic addition to the TempleVerse, proving that Silvers has no intention of letting this series stagnate. If you’re a fan, this one is a must-read. If you’re new to the series—buckle up.

-4 stars. constant action.

"little heavy-handed, don't you think?"
"i have tiny balls. i have to overcompensate where i can."

"i realized that no matter how loyal of a friend i had been, i had pretty much given everyone Post Traumatic Stress Disorder for xmas gifts."

"show them that they matter. not that you're willing to give your life to save theirs, but that their lives have saved yours."

"they know monsters live inside you, and that you're willing to let those beasts loose to keep your friends and family safe. but they need to know that you love their monsters. not just when a life is on the line, but all the time. that it's okay to be a monster."

"it wasn't that he couldn't take a joke. it was that he already felt like a failure, and my constant teasing had only reinforced those insecurities, driving them bone-deep."

"just...be my compass."
"well, we're all fucked if i'm the moral compass."

"disco ball of death!" [this was a war-cry! hehehe]

"gah! who the hell are you?" i snapped, trying to keep him in view without staring at his twig and giggleberries. [he was naked]

Wizards? Yup. Fae? Yup. Greeks? Yup. Norse gods? Yup. Answers to sooooooooo many questions we’ve had about Nate Temple and friends? Oh yeah baby! I didn’t think author Shayne Silvers could surprise me but his vast reservoir of plot twists is apparently bottomless. Nate and company must journey to the Fae lands to rescue his best friend’s (and local alpha werewolf alpha) fiancé, Ashley, who was taken there in order to heal by Pan himself. What was she healing from? A backstabbing attack by Nate’s ex fiancé, immediately after Ashley defeated Hercules. Yes THAT Hercules! Before Nate and crew can even start their journey, two of his greatest enemies, one an ancestor who became the legend of the Mad Hatter and the other, an almost god-like Maker of extreme power, both decide to try and kill Nate. Oh and did I mention the Beasts and the REAL truth behind Santa and his reindeer? No? Well then grab a copy and hang on—it’s HAMMER TIME!!

Rating For All & Funny Story

I know, I should do this for every book and I have no good reason why I'm not.
Every one of these books are a pleasure to read, are hard to put down and make you laugh out loud. I can't count how many days I've gone to work tired because I couldn't stop reading one of these books! There just aren't that many "good places to stop reading". You do miss somethings if you stick with just the books in the Nate Temple series. I couldn't find the one about the daddy daycare. It doesn't take anything away from reading the books, though.
Funny story time: my husband asked me if in all my reading if I'd come across a character named "Nate Temple". Yeah, kinda. Why? My husband has read a couple of series by other authors that are magic and fantasy series and they're always referencing a wizard by that name who is feared and respected as the most powerful bada$$ who ever lived!
Way to go Shayne!!!

The stage is set to return to the Land of Fae, to save Ashley and Pan. But to go back there, is risky, many people are wanting Nate’s head. But many new secrets are revealed that are shocking and even more questions are haunting both Nate and the reader. Some of the characters will come into their own in this one. This book is action packed and not as heavy as the last book, it continues to progress and stay fresh and exciting. I really hope Nate gets some down time soon, he needs to sleep for about a week straight.

I like that Callie came back briefly, which is (hopefully) setting the base for a relationship with Nate in the future. She’s a thousand times better choice for Nate than Indie was. This series also has a couple of different spin-offs now, and it’s a universe that keeps on giving.

Nate Temple is a man to be reckoned with. He wields the powers of a wizard. He is friends with dragons, vampires, werewolves, etc. He's even killed a god. However now, he has some new problems. Not one, but two "tiny gods" want him dead. Preferably as painfully as possible. As if that wasn't enough, he must rescue a close friend from the land of the fae. To do this, he has to help some more of his friends get in touch with their inner monsters, while making sure they all understand how important they are. For those familiar with Nate and his exploits, this is the beginning of a new journey. For those unfamiliar, start from the beginning. It is a bumpy ride unlike any you have ever been on.

“Two old dudes want to kill me. Oh, and one of them is my ancestor…. But at least they want to kill each other just as badly.”

I have absolutely adored every single one of Shayne Silvers’ The Temple Chronicles and War Hammer proved to be no exception. It’s plot is the perfect mix of snarky laughs, mystery, action, thrills and adventure. It’s hero, Nate Temple, is actually better than Jim Butcher’s Dresden - which for me is the highest of praise (and a praise I never thought I’d give). Add in a perfect supporting cast and superb writing and you can see why I recommend this in the strongest terms (though really, this series is so good that you’re much better starting with book 1 than missing out).

F-in' WOW.

I am speeched stunless.
The plot is amazing.
The characters are a few orders of magnitude beyond that.
Reading these books is the literary equivalent of falling in love with the right person. The kind where love fills every last atom of your existence, and you just KNOW it can't possibly get better... And the next day you realize you were wrong, it could, it DID. Every story of Shayne's I read, I just KNOW it can't possibly get better. And then he gives us the next one.
I think the only thing I can say is:
Thanks for sharing your imaginary friends with us, Shayne.

To everyone else, I'm sorry this review isn't very descriptive. Just... Go get the first one, and read them. All.
Oh, great. Now I feel like a drug dealer. "Here, just give this a little try..."

OMG

Shayne, my dear, you have done it again!!! War Hammer is incredible. I am loving how you are spinning Callie into Nate's stories and vice versa. I am also loving how you continue to flesh characters out during the series, instead of the "well, you met them and I told you a little about XYZ in the last book, and that is all you need to know" that some authors do. All of your main guys and gals are still growing and we can see that. I love it!!

I just got my daughter hooked on your books (she's in her 20's) and I have already heard her laugh out loud reading the first one. Keep it up, Darling. I can't wait to see where the crew goes from here. U certainly can't imagine them taking a break for long.

The only reason I'm reviewing this and not the whole set is because I read the rest of the series during my Christmas time off. I love paranormal fantasy and this series, or anything by Shayne Silvers is worth reading, especially if you enjoy this genre....but seriously, it's a fun read even if you don't.

There are great characters whose personalities are sometimes a little familiar, there are a ton of pop culture references and the most entertaining snark. Nate is a mage with some exceptional powers that he didn't even know he had when the series begins. His friends are from a variety of supernatural backgrounds, some suprising. There is constant issues, consequences and a ton of action..........and a whole lot of fun.

I'm thinking this is the last one of these I read. Nate Temple has supercalifragilisticexpialidocious powers, he's in line to be the 5th Horseman of the Apocalypse, his servant/bodyguard is the Greek god, Pan who is also Puck and Oberon, who is also King of the Wylde hunt, and there are lots and lots of other fantastically stupid plot devices being used and now Nate has been give a War Hammer which looks and acts suspiciously like Mjolnir, Thor's hammer!

Maybe it is because I have been reading some truly fantastic books by genuinely talented authors in between reading these and Silvers' other series, that has made me like these less and less, but I don't think so. I read some other indie authors' books which I have very much enjoyed. I didn't like this one.

Tote-taa-lyee oooh-mazing

This book settles any and all previous gripes. I am officially a Team Temple fan! Dedicated hardcore, just read EVERYTHING I can get my hands on! I don't know how Master Shayne sleeps, if he sleeps, with all the activity going on in that head of his.😂 Said with total affection. Back to the story. It was packed with action, explosions, (My inner tomboy rejoices) beefcake, dragons, fairies, Gods and magic galore! Too much to focus on any particular part without giving away spoilers. You'll find a cast of characters so loveable that you cheer them on to defeating their enemies, then slam dunk a couch cushion while celebrating in your best Thriller zombie 'victory' dance. Now. I'm ready for book 9.💖

Wow! Just wow!
Where to begin? I really can't do this masterpiece justice!
Shayne let Temple do some serious introspection and positive growing.. I was really happy to see it as it addressed a few concerns of mine. Several of the other characters were taken on their own personal growth journies as well.. Very well rounded..
There are also a lot of very funny scenes, one liners, and situations - beginning with "The Great Leafblower Incident".
Many questions were answered and almost as many new mysteries were born..

The Dedication to Amy was very touching. She was a Friend and will be greatly missed..

War Hammer is the latest in the epic Nate Temple series. So much can happen in the fantastical worlds created by Shayne Silvers. Between Chateau Falco and the Fae world what could possibly happen? we will find new artifacts. See power like never before. We get to see the clashes that have been building. Some of the characters we love will get their time to shine. Oh, big one here, we get to learn about Nate's birth and childhood! From snark, paintballs and red shoes there is so much to love about this story but with great stories can also come a little sadness. It is hard to talk about the book without spoilers so just grab a copy and start reading

I could live in Nate’s world all day

It’s hard to believe that here we are in book 8 of the Nate Temple Chronicals and not only is the story line still fresh but exciting. Each book unveils another layer of the complex life of Nate.

I don’t want to give any spoilers but you are missing out if you are not reading this series. It has action, adventure, badass characters, dragons, wizards, God’s and LYAO snarky humor.

In fact this book was over the top with so many comedic zingers it’s hard to pick which ones made me laugh the most. I loved them all. I rarely go back and reread a book but as soon as I finished this one I read it again!

Wow, every book is even better than the one before!
The Nate Temple Chronicles started with Obsidian Son and I absolutely recommend this series not least because each book manages to be even better than the one before, which is really impressive as the bar was set so high with Wild Side which was the book before this one. These chronicles are so packed with characters and mythology that you'll just have to read just 1 more chapter (or 2 or 3)?! I won't tell you the story as I couldn't do it justice but I will tell you that the Nate Temple kept me on the edge of my seat with the action and made me laugh out loud with his pure snark and lack of respect!

Amazing!!!

I absolutely love nate temple!!! This series should never end. When it does I may never pick up my kindle again. Each story leads you to the next, Ms. Silver's is a very creative writer,Nate and his best friend gunner I remember he was a cop at the beginning of the series, have a true friendship and the people who have been added have only made the series better, unfortunately I have to wait for the next one to come out,but I am going to read about calling and see if I like that series as much as this one!!!!!
