Have fun learning about language! One book is never enough to explore the wide range of synonyms! In this follow up to Pitch and Throw, Grasp and Know , the crazy and zany cats deliver loads of additional examples to illustrate the power of synonyms to make writing superb or terrific. Brian P. Cleary's playful, rollicking verse and Brian Gable's comical cats or felines turn traditional grammar lessons on end. Each pair or group of synonyms is printed in color for easy and simple identification. Read this book aloud and share the delight of the sense―and nonsense―of words.
Part of the Words Are CATegorical series. Children's nonfiction picture book about synonyms. There is another book in this series about synonyms, Pitch and Throw, Grasp and Know: What Is a Synonym?, which is a bit more straightforward and geared better towards the targeted age group. This book's subtitle is "More About Synonyms" but the content is very similar to Pitch and Throw, Grasp and Know: What Is a Synonym?. I would select that one over this book when introducing synonyms to children.
This is a great book to aid in introducing synonyms. It is fun and interactive and contains sets of synonyms in a rhyming fashion. Some of the words are quite difficult, so it would be best suited for 2-4 graders.
Part of an excellent series on English grammar for kids - I'm going to be doing lessons on synonyms in both First Language Lessons and in All About Reading, so this seemed an ideal introduction to the concept of synonyms. This book ("MORE about synonyms," as it promises) gives further examples useful to understanding the concept . . .
As with all the others in this series, I got these to share with my children as a fun and cute way to discuss language and have not been disappointed. They are cute and engaging for kids.
This is a very colorful and rhyming introdcution to synonyms.
Review
This book is an excellent introduction to synonyms. It defines the concept and has many examples as well as the purpose of synonyms. The book has few words per page and colorful, humorous and related pictures just like a good picture book. The pictures are very illustrative for a child trying to understand meaning. But it most definitely increases vocabulary and introduces kids to what language can do. This is illustrated in the passage, "They give us alternatives, substitutes, choices and help give our stories more interesting voices." To further underline the instructive quality, the words that are synonyms are in colorful text as opposed to the basic black of the rest of the words. Overall this is an effective book in being both instuctional and entertaining.
Critical Reviews
Kirkus Kirkus highly recommends this book for the classroom. It also highlights many of the aspects that I found notable such as the colorful synonyms, entertainment and context clues from illustrations. It calls this series "education disguised."
We really enjoy the books by this author. He makes learning fun, and this is a silly and humorous rhyming book about synonyms. His books really entertain children while teaching them basic concepts; our girls really like them. The illustrations are cartoony and cute, too - we love the cats.
We've read several of the books in the Words are CATegorical series and we've really enjoyed them. We will certainly look for more books by Brian P. Cleary at our local library.
The cats in this book walk you through a humorous book full of synonyms. This would be a great book to read at the beginning of a synonym lesson or when teaching students the importance of a thesaurus. Give students a list of words and have them find a synonym in the thesaurus. Good for a literacy center
This book is set up perfectly to talk about synonyms. It explains to the reader what a synonym is and how we can use it to describe 1 thing in many ways. It does have a good part where I would ask the class to name synonyms for the word laugh. I can write all of the words on the board and discuss them. Then I would continue reading to see if we as a class came up with the ones in the book.
This book about synonyms provides a definition and many solid examples of synonyms for students to understand. The illustrations are wonderful and also lend to comprehension of the concept of synonyms. I will use this book in the future in both reading and writing instruction to support student learning about synonyms and words with similar meanings.
This book about synonyms helps students understand there are several words that mean the same thing. This book could be read to various grade levels and help students realize the puporse of a thesaurus.
I like how the book has the definition clearly stated right from the beginning. It has lots of examples of the same words and very cute images to illustrate those. It illustrates the meanings uniquely throughout the story, Very entertaining book to read while learning about synonmys and rhyming.

A great rhyming book to help teach synonyms and great links and activities on the Brain Cleary website. My class enjoyed this today, and it broadened their vocabulary!
