I had this book as a child and my nearly 3- year old found it at my parents’ house. We’ve read it over 20 times since finding it- she loves how simply the book captures exactly what happens on a plane. While this book is older, it’s still relevant and does a great job of everything that happens before, during, and after a flight. Unlike many contemporary books, this doesn’t dumb down the experience. I’d love more books like this one for my kids.

Five stars for the love my younger brother & I had for this book, which my grandmother sent us once before we came to visit her (though accompanying our mother, not alone like Elizabeth & Jimmy Baldwin). We truly dog-eared this book, scouring every last little detail in the engaging, brightly colored pictures. When our mom read it to us, we made her switch the children's names to ours, & it felt like such an exciting adventure. This book literally gave our imaginations wings.
One star for the fact that it's not going to serve much point anymore. No young children will have any experiences like the ones portrayed here in today's much less friendly-feeling travel climate; both practices & equipment pictured here are almost shockingly outdated (at least, considering how well I remember air travel being like this & yet how young I still feel!) so it's not a useful educational tool & kids will therefore be bored by it, since they won't be able to relate to any of it. There are, I'm sure, many wonderful new books to fill its place - experience books like this really require being redone every so many years as things change. So because all of this basically makes the book irrelevant, & it's no doubt been effectively replaced, I'm ignoring these things & giving it the rating that the little girl who read & loved this book in 1983-86 would have given it, had she had such a thing as Goodreads.com, & leaving it at that. And now that I'm done waxing mildly philosophical on a picture book for children, I'm off to re-read it with love & warmth tinged with a slight feeling of loss. If that doesn't prove just how powerful an experience the act of reading is, I don't know that anything can.

This dated book I suppose was written for children who were about to embark on their first flight. Because it documents the process of flying, it was boring. Plain and simple. Telling about baggage handling, flight attendants, etc. just holds no interest. That it was written 30 years ago before high security and when there used to be meal served inflight, this is just a mess all around.
Merged review:
Dated. The mother comes onto the airplane to say goodbye to the children, but she doesn't have a ticket. Yeah, that would never happen these days.

A gorgeous, vintage picture book depicting a brother and sister taking their first airplane trip in a more civilized 1982. Colorful and visually appealing, a cute way to show young children what an airplane trip entails...even showing a detailed view of the inside of a plane. Loved it and so did my son.

We're taking qn airplane trip

The image is wrong.
The book is a story that allows children to connect personal experiences and text. Many children have had the experience of going on a plane. This book explains the process in simple format for kindergarten.
