Emma Darcy is the pseudonym created by the married writing team of Wendy (1940-2020) and Frank Brennan (1936-1995). Their life journey has taken as many twists and turns as the characters in their stories, whose international popularity has resulted in over sixty-million book sales. With more than a hundred titles, Emma Darcy appeared regularly on the Waldenbooks bestseller lists in the U.S.A. and in the Nielson BookScan Top 100 chart in the U.K.

Wendy was born 28 November 1940 in Australia. Her sister was the novelist Maureen Mary (Miranda Lee). Her father was a country school teacher and brilliant sportsman. Her mother was a talented dressmaker. She obtained an Honours degree in Latin and initially worked as a high school English/French teacher. She married Frank Brennan, an Australian businessman born in 1936. She changed careers to computer programming before marriage and motherhood settled her into a community life. She was reputedly the first woman computer programmer in the southern hemisphere.

As voracious readers, the step to writing their own books seemed a natural progression and the challenge of creating exciting stories was soon highly addictive. They were published since 1983. In 1993, for the Emma Darcy pseudonym's 10th anniversary, they created the "Emma Darcy Award Contest" to encourage authors to finish their manuscripts. After the death of Frank Brennan in 1995, Wendy wrotes books on her own. She lived in a beachside property on the central coast of New South Wales, and liked to travel extensively to research settings and increase her experience of places and people.

Wendy Brennan passed away on December 21, 2020. She is survived by her children, grandchildren, and sister, writer Miranda Lee.

This was a pleasant surprise for me, as a reader. Emma Darcy is hit and miss for me, when it comes to Harlequin Presents. I often find myself alienated by a romance story that is too modern and overtly sophisticated, and doesn't touch me, when I read her stories. But, that is not the case with The Outback Bridal Rescue.

I like the prominent male point of view with Johnny's character. Johnny was an orphan, who never knew his father, and lost his mother at a very young age. He was abused as a foster child, and learned to keep people happy by turning on the charm. He got himself into trouble at the age of sixteen. As a result, he and two other boys were sent to Patrick Maguire's sheep station in the Outback. This turned out to be a life-changing event for Johnny, as he found a mentor, and honorary father in Patrick. He never forgot what Patrick did for him, and considered the sheep station a home away from home. When he gets word that Patrick died, he's devasted. It turns out that Patrick has left 49% of the financially-ailing sheep station to him in his will. The remaining 51% was left to Megan, Patrick's daughter, who despises him, for all intents and purposes. Yet, Johnny cannot allow that to stop him from doing his part to see that Patrick's legacy doesn't fade. He's determined to get Megan to accept his help, and to work with him to save the sheep station.

Megan fell deeply in love with Johnny as a very young girl. When he fails to be there for a very important moment in her life, she starts to believe that she doesn't matter to him, and the caring treatment she received from him was nothing personal, just part of his usual charm. She grows quite bitter towards him in the intervening years. When she finds out that her father left almost half the station to him, she feels betrayed. She's determined to do what she can to limit his involvement in the station.

This couple butt head initially, but they come to an understanding because of their mutual love for Megan's father and the station. They decide to be friends and to work together. But the night of Patrick's funeral, they ended up being more than that. As a result, Megan ends up pregnant, and Johnny insists on marriage. From this point, the story is about Megan coming to terms with her insecurity about herself and how she can fit in the life of the international celebrity and singer that Johnny has become. Johnny enjoys the fruits of his successes, but he never forgot the lessons that Patrick taught him. Deep down, family is the number one thing for him. He's torn, because he can see how the celebrity life aspects torture Megan, and he's ready to give it all up, for her. I liked that Megan showed some maturity, and was able to get past her insecurities, to encourage Johnny in his career.

As I said above, this was a deep story, with a lot to offer, emotionally. I liked both characters, finding them to be sympathetic. I felt bad for Megan that she was feeling so unwanted and inadequate, although Johnny never saw her as being either. I sympathized with Johnny in his feelings that Megan hated him, but he wasn't sure what he had done to cause her dislike. I wanted them to come to an accord, and to see if they could make things work between them. This story did touch me, and I liked the aspects of Johnny trying to integrate his professional persona with his life with Megan on the sheep station. In the end, he was really trying to find himself, and by the end of the story, he is able to do that. I also liked that Megan came to terms with her insecurity and was able to focus on being the supportive wife that Johnny needed, meeting him halfway, and accepting the love he had for her. This book had a good message about family and finding what you felt you could never have, and about love giving us the ability to compromise for the greater good.

Recommended read. Overall rating: 4.25/5.0 stars.

"The Outback Bridal Rescue" is the story of Megan and Johnny.

The hero and his two friends are homeless teenagers, when a kind man takes them in and becomes their rock. Years later, the hero has become a famous musician and upcoming film star, when the man dies. He realizes that he has been named as the benefactor in the man's will, much to his disapproving daughters' chagrin. They meet at the funeral, there's war of words and soon sparks fly, there is separation, pregnancy, reconciliation and HEA.

Sweet read with a nice warm ending.

In this series, the three men have been great, along with the secondary characters. It’s a series worth reading, IMHO. (I’ve happily reread it many times.)

In this one, the heroine was really disappointing to me. She supposedly loved the H from childhood but chose to be antagonistic or mean through several interactions. In the beginning portion, she was a bigoted, outspoken bitch, attributing horrible actions to the H without any proof. She let her insecurities absolutely rule her long after she should have been maturing, and ‘punished’ him for things he didn’t do. She typecast him and then treated him badly based on her own views. It was actually not kind and not really loving, considering her so-called lifelong love for him. Her immaturity was not a positive, especially at 28 years old.

Their romance was overshadowed too much by everything else going on, too.

Would’ve liked a little more happy at the end just because he deserved better treatment and I wish we would’ve gotten to see some of it.

Again, the three main H characters + one wise older male character in the series were great.

SERIES/STAND-ALONE #3 in Outback Knights Trilogy
CHARACTERS Johnny Ellis/ musician; Megan McGuire/ joint heir of Gundamurra
TIME/PLACE Australian Outback/ 2000's
FIRST LINES: Johnny Ellis rode into the old western twon that had been guilt for the movie.
COMMENTS: This is the 3rd book in the trilogy featuring the 3 young men that were taken in by Patrick McGuire. They each were rebellious and had done something to illegal to put them away for awhile. Patrick McGuire the owner of Gundamurra gave them another chance on his Outback Station. Each of the 3 young men matured and learned well. They all had a bond to the McGuires and the land but went off to become successful in their careers away from this isolated area. This story features Johnny Ellis who has become a famous Pop/Rock star and now entering the movie scene. When Patrick McGuire passes, his will stipulates that both Megan, his daughter, and Johnny will hold equal shares to the land. Megan is resentful of this and thinks she is entitled to it all, but has secretly harbored feelings for Johnny altho she feels he has only seen her as is kid sister. She also feels his fame and fortune not suited to the Outback. Johnny, however, has had the limelight for the last 2 decades and is ready to settle down. He 's not sure why Megan is so cold to him and is almost ready to sell his share to her to make her happy… Always nice to travel to Australia. A nice read.

This book actually surprised me. I really enjoyed it. Even though Megan annoyed me to the end, but I get why she was like she was. I loved Johnny sooooooo much!
