La seule phrase qui peut définir mon expérience de lecture ? "J'ai connu pire." Coin perdu pour mourir est un livre policier assez simple, n'ayant pas une si grande expérience de ce genre j'étais curieux de lire un livre avec pour décor l'afrique du sud. C'était un bon univers et la déambulation du narrateur était sympathique ! Certains personnages se révélaient intéressants dans leurs constructions par moments et même si j'ai trouvé le coupable facilement je pense que c'était un bon choix. Malgré la mosaïque de personnages qu'introduit l'auteur dans son livre, par moments chacun étaient traités de manière superflue ou stéréotypée (désolé mais les femmes qui portent des robes blanches, qui sont des beautés fatales aux longs cheveux bouclés et qu'on décrit comme "ayant des traits féminins" ça a un peu le don de m'exacerber dans les romans policiers.... tout autant que le psychiatre qui déteste sa femme sans aucune raison...) Il y a beaucoup de zones d'ombres qui sont laissés à la fin, c'est un choix comme un autre mais je trouve ça légèrement frustrant.

Excellent introduction of an interesting protagonist (a Jewish psychologist who works for the Department of Prisons in apartheid South Africa. He is called in to determine if a kaffir (black) prisoner killed his landowner’s son by poisoning him with mushrooms and if he is too
Mad to be held accountable. Yudel Gordon does not believe he is guilty and investigates the case, opening up family secrets and a white Supremacy group. Looking forward to finding the additional books in the series.

A while back I picked up The October Killings having no idea that it was part of a series (#4 to be exact). It feels good to go back and see where it all began. I came for the mystery and was rewarded with complex characters and a strong sense of place. The social and political climate of South Africa in the seventies is laid bare in the pages of this book. For this, I can forgive the minor flaws in the plot. It was fairly obvious [to me] from the beginning who was responsible for the murder Yudel was sent to investigate. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series. As I've already read the fourth book I know it only gets better from here.

I liked the most recent book by this writer, so went back to find earlier books. Kind of hard to find, he is south african. Anyway, I like mystery writers with the chops to be able to weave the political climate into their books. This was an early book, late 70's, so very different from the latest book. Very interesting race and power context, I definitely enjoyed the social fabric more than the mystery.

Une découverte que ce roman situé en Afrique du Sud en plein apartheid (1979) où le héros est le psychiatre de la prison. Une lecture très agréable avec un portrait sans fard d'une société blanche raciste vivant dans la peur de "l'homme noir" et de la vie de ces domestiques et ouvriers agricoles, proches de l'esclavage. Le format est classique mais j'ai envie de lire la suite de ses aventures.

Nudaaaa

Toto zahrniem v krátkosti - kniha mi nič nedala, žiadna akcia, žiadne pocity pri čítaní, totálna nuda.
Teraz seriózne, ja som normálne zaspávala pri čítaní, nútila som sa do toho a ešte ani koniec nebol prekvapivý. Bolo to velmi predvídateľné.
