George Baxt, the US playwright, scriptwriter and novelist, in New York City, USA.

He began his career as a radio announcer, an actors' agent, and television scriptwriter. He claimed that as an actors' agent he threw James Dean out of his office because he needed a bath. George Baxt's career developed into scriptwriting cult horror films. He made a contribution to The Abominable Dr Phibes, although it was uncredited. His first novel A Queer Kind of Death, (1966), introduced the detective Pharoah Love who was the first in the genre to be both black and openly gay. The novel was very well received and marked the start of a new career in writing. Two further Pharoah Love novels soon appeared and were widely regarded as superior to the first. Nearly three decades passed before the final outings of Pharoah Love in two novels.

Meanwhile George Baxt introduced the detective duo Sylvia Plotkin and Max van Larsen, but these were soon abandoned and several non-series novels were produced. Starting with The Dorothy Parker Murder Case, George Baxt then began to use his knowledge of Hollywood life by using celebrities as characters in a series of detective novels.

He died following complications after heart surgery.

I read a few of these in my teen years and loved Pharoah Love. Was going to collect them again and re-read them, especially the one or two I missed the first time around. Pharaoh is a black, gay detective with attitude. He's sometimes snarky, but has heart. I enjoy his banter with others and his point of view.
But somehow I just couldn't stay with this. It starts out well; he ends up in a shootout with an old school friend, knowing that the friend set him up to take him out rather than go to prison. Even though the former friend had turned to the wrong side of the law, and Pharaoh knows he did the right thing under the circumstances, it's still a lot to process. All good. But somewhere after this, I got lost in the sauce. I still love Pharoah Love, but just couldn't care much about the other characters or the plot. Seemed like a lot of running around to interview people and not make much sense of what they say. Maybe it's me. Could be not the right timing. I dunno. Setting it aside. May try again some time down the road.

As with the others in the series, fun mystery investigated by the gay detective, Pharoah Love. This time he is investigating the death of a pair of twins who were gang-raped by a bunch of gangsters. Suddenly the rapists start dying in pairs and Love has to determine who killed the twins and who is seeking retribution for their deaths. Interesting characters, campy dialogue.
