They are children just like your own. Except for one murderous moment when they become Children of the Dark. Suddenly they are transformed into killers of unnatural strength and power - killing the adults around them.
During the 1980's, he read the entire Sherlock Holmes canon to his then-ten-year-old daughter at evening story time. She's now become historical novelist Anna Elliott and he's thrilled to be her coauthor on the Sherlock and Lucy Mystery Series. There are now thirty-four Sherlock and Lucy adventures on Amazon, with more coming!
The blurb on the back of this book describes it as a cross between Carrie and Coma which is pretty much spot on. The children are creepy and scary as they succumb to their evil sides created by who knows what? Is this a scientific issue? Or does God have a big role to play in this? The book is science versus religion as the characters look to find the answer for this outbreak of terror. It did become bogged down when it came to science as various theories were thought of and discussed in hard science language. It was also spreading from one town to another but I never got a feeling of urgency or a threat to the whole nation. It was chilling as the innocent children went blank and transformed into strong evil killers with no memory of what they had done. An interesting ending but not a great one. An enjoyable late 70’s horror tale.
Never managed to get all the way through this until I just gave up and skimmed through as best I could - I wanted to know what happened, but I couldn't endure battling through all the sex and violence to get there.
I'm not sure I'd say it was badly written per se, but it reads like pulp fiction & that's not a compliment. I likely would never have picked this up had I not inherited it, along with a few hundred other books, from my mother, who usually had excellent taste in reading material.
If anyone reading this wants to try it, please let me know. I'd happily pass it on (I have plenty of other books I've inherited from Mum, I won't miss this one!). I'm likely going to register it on BookCrossing & give it up through BookMooch as a controlled release. I need the points...
3.0 I was actually really enjoying this for 285 pages, then the end got weird. This book has a lot more to it than the cover would have you think (I have a different cover than the one shown here). I was quite impressed and felt it would have made a great cult classic type early 80's horror movie. I just didn't get or like the end. I feel there were so many other ways it could have gone. Even with that, I love finding hidden gems like this at the used bookstore.
Pretty good story for an older book. The premise of our children losing control was terrifying. The secondary story lines had some depth. Overall, it kept me interested through the end. I didn't enjoy the ending. I was hoping for a different type of explanation.
