A quality photographic history of one of World War II’s best aircraft. I especially enjoyed the vignettes from pilots and crew chiefs and the spreads of photos detailing the differences in type. The Mustang is, perhaps, the most aesthetically appealing aircraft of that time period, and the accounts of its development and use provided great context that I otherwise would never have known.
Published in 1974, 'Mustang at War' is short history of the famous US WW2 fighter aircraft, illustrated by nearly 200 photos and filled with great anecdotes. Some of the facts in the development history might be a little dubious, at best perpetuating myths that have been discarded in more recent histories of the type, but it still made a great book.
Excellent history of a period when we began to think of weapon systems and how they integrate into a combined arms military philosophy. The P-51 was just that sort of weapons system. The history is complete running from its beginnings as a low altitude Allison engined British army co-operation machine to Merlin powered air-superiority fighter to the end of its career in Korea as a tactical strike aircraft. The oral histories are excellent and on point, research meticulous and an enjoyable writing style is employed. One of the best books of its type.
