Hawker #9

Atlanta Extreme

From the jungles of Belize to the streets of Atlanta, Hawker s war rages on The CIA wants James Hawker dead. For years, his one-man campaign against organized crime has struck fear into America s most corrupt politicians, and now they re striking back. Then anticommunist crusader Colonel Curtis invites Hawker to Belize, where he s been assisting the rebel movement in the fight against tyranny. His enemies have powerful friends back in the United States, who would kill Curtis to protect the regime. For the sake of liberty, Hawker must stop running and resume his battle for America s soul. #9 in the Hawker series. This 1986 series entry by author Randy Wayne White writing as Carl Ramm is disappointing. The CIA has placed a hit on James Hawker for not following instructions but they are prepared to forgive and forget if he will handle their problem with Col. Curtis. In Belize, Curtis is waging a war using atrocities against the communists of fictional country Masagua (actually a region of Guatemala) financed by some of his thugs running a protection racket in Atlanta. For political and legal reasons, the CIA must farm out this operation. In spite of the book's title, Hawker spends more than half of the book in Central America assessing Curtis' operation (including having a pornographically described interlude with his 'confidante', Laurene Catocamez. Then Hawker heads for Atlanta to do what the vigilante does best before heading back to Belize to finish the job. a quick read but without any literary merit,

Atlanta extreme was the first Hawker book that I did not blow through. I quite enjoy the hawker series and so far have reviewed each book as a five star action novel series. Unfortunately, Atlanta extreme did not capture what I look forward to in a hawker series. The action is there, but comes very late in the book and is only a couple pages. In the 170 pages about 140 of them is setting the backstory for the two pages of action. The story is interesting, and in reality this book should not have been called Atlantic extreme, but something more of the lines of jungle warfare. We don’t actually spend much time at all in Atlanta, but mostly in the jungle and gorilla warfare.

Maybe it was because of a busy schedule, but I had a hard time coming back and wrapping this book up. Usually, I finish a book in a day or two days extreme however took me two weeks simply because I wasn’t gripped enough to come back and finish. This was by no means a snooze fest of a hawker series, but felt more like the author was trying to stretch out the book. Overall, it was still an enjoyable hawker series, but so far my least favorite in the set. Four stars only two more hawkers to go.

This time, our vigilante is on the run from the C.I.A. He finds himself in Belize. Soon, though, he is offered to join a rebel group out to overthrow a fictitious country in Central America. The thing is, the American that is running the coup is nutty as a fruit cake. He cuts off innocent villagers heads to promote dissension among the populace. The thing is, Hawker is there undercover to take him out.

If you are wondering why this is called Atlanta Extreme, it's because Hawker goes there to cut the head off the funding for the rebels. There are two thugs that blackmail and intimidate people around the state out of money. Even though I gave it four stars, which it fully deserves, I would say this is my least favorite of the series so far.
