This is the first comprehensive and up-to-date biography of Henry Dundas, First Viscount Melville (1742 - 1811), and of his son Robert, Second Viscount Melville (1771 - 1851).

He is the author of The Scottish Empire (2001), How the Scots Made America (2003) and Wild Scots: Four Hundred Years of Highland History (2005). He has also written numerous articles on modern Scottish history and several political pamphlets. He has contributed to most major Scottish and British newspapers and has been a weekly columnist for The Scotsman, The Herald and The Sunday Times.
