Kaah Maah had been the reaper for over a millennia. The mundane repetition of collecting souls night after night from an ever-increasing population was beginning to grind on him. Kaah had witnessed an ocean of unique faces, all confronted with their final moments on earth. Though different in appearance they all showed one final emotion—fear.
Kaah wanted a change. He craved quiet serenity, where he could perfect his yoga poses while listening to his favorite singer Michael Bublè. Kaah wanted nothing more than to retire and become a ‘no one special’ in a ‘nowhere special’ town.
When strange things began happening in Deadend, Ohio, the question had to be asked.
You might be able to take the reaper away from death, but can you ever actually take death away from the reaper?
Dzintra is an Australian author, living in Queensland, Australia, where the weather is always warm and sunny. She writes a perfect blend of drama, comedy and romance all mixed up in a paranormal/fantasy mash up. Her characters are addictive and her books fresh and new. Her favourite thing to do is to take beliefs aand characters you think you know and turn them upside down. Take a chance, you won't regret it.
I went into this not knowing what to expect at all, and boy was I surprised.
The plot is simple, Kaah, also known as The Reaper, also known as Death is retiring. And he's going to need a place to settle down. Accompanied by his trusty goblin sidekick, Kaah does the best he can trying to adapt to civilian life, and a kind of human interaction he's not at all used to.
One of Sullivan's strengths his definitely diversity. Her writing and story goes from dark and dreary to humorous to sexy all in the same paragraph. I was often reminded of the TV-show Supernatural, it has that kind of down to earth vibe.
I'm going to go ahead and guess that I'm not the target audience for this particular type of story, and though I did love the mystery, it's probably aimed at someone who's more partial to romance. I did enjoy that Sullivan managed to blend the two genres so well though, while at the same time keeping it light and funny.
Recommended to anyone who's looking for a supernatural and funny romance.
Wondrously fresh take on the traditional cozy mystery. We have all the beloved tropes of a cozy here: the small-town setting with a cast of interesting townspeople/suspects, the appealing protagonist who stumbles into being an amateur detective, the sweet romantic love interest. It just so happens our hero in this case used to be the reaper of souls before deciding to retire to a quieter life. There are lots of fun fish-out-of-water shenanigans as Kaah and his loyal sidekick, Rork, attempt to blend into their new home, but there is also a nice touch of poignancy as Kaah yearns to live a normal life despite both the power and the limitations his true self imposes upon him. In this first book in a series, the author does a great job of developing the concept and giving us a satisfying solution to the mystery at hand while setting the scene for further adventures for our unusual detective. Fans of cozies with a twist, written with intelligence, humor, and warmth may want to check this one out.
Once Upon A Death was - for me at least - the written equivalent of a Studio Ghibli movie.
Now, let me explain that statement.
I love me a Disney movie. But those movies have a kind of formula which works, and works because that formula is familiar. The first time I watched a Studio Ghibli movie, I was blown away by how animation could be presented in such a whimsical and quirky way. Now I lean more towards Ghibli.
Once Upon A Death, takes that familiar figure of the Grim Reaper and flips the script on him in a likewise whimsical and quirky way. And I loved it!!
What if the Reaper wasn’t the spectre of death, here to claim your life. What if instead he was a benevolent being who arrived at the moment of your death to help transition your soul?
And what if instead of being a skeletal figure of terror, he was instead a buff dude - by day at least - who practiced yoga and loved easy listening music?
And what if he retired to a sleepy little town and tried to get a normal job in order to try and fit in?
Kaah - as the Reaper goes by in the book - has been around for a long time and he knows a lot about the world. But...he doesn’t know how to live in it. How to relate to people. Much of the joy of the read is following Kaah as he acts like a Klingon out of water!! (The way Sullivan’s written him, reminds me of Worf from Star Trek...but I digress!)
The book is packed with interesting characters that I hope we learn more about as this series of books progresses, and the Town of Deadend itself holds some mysterious secrets!
Sullivan also writes in a kind of laid back style, which I loved. It’s a gentle read. There’s this whimsical nature - which I mentioned earlier - to her description of the town and it’s goings on. From old school diners to Apple-bobbing contests and town committees and crocheting groups. On the one hand it’s kind of surreal to see the Reaper (and his assistant Rork) in these situations, but I simply found it adorably...whimsical! Lol
I won’t say anymore, just encourage you to go give it a whirl. I’ve already ordered the second book in the series, so I’m all in for the adventure!
A very different pace with this cozy mystery but a fabulous story and it just shows how versatile this author is with her writing.
Kaah Maah, aka the Reaper, and his assistant Rork, who is a jelly baby eating hobgoblin, retire to Deadend, Ohio where they start a new chapter in their lives. A new job, new friends, experiences...including being involved in a murder mystery..and a new life in general.
Once again this author has treated her readers to some outstanding expressions and descriptions, for example when describing Kaah’s shirt...’a crisp white shirt that clung to his muscles like a damsel to her hero’. As well the humour in the story is on point, the fun banter between characters, sarcasm included, the innuendos and the actions that take place put a smile on your face or make you laugh out loud.
There are some extremely clever ties in this story to real life situations, I’m not going to give anything away but I do want to applaud this author for her inventiveness that is very believable. As well the emotions flowed and yes, I admit, a tear or two did escape in certain scenes.especially the chapel one it’s the garden of flowers but then even the reaper was drained in that one.
Great characters that are easy to relate to, even Kaah, and likeable to boot. Rork is a gem of a character and deserves special mention. The Deadend women are mostly pips, I say mostly because Susan..well yeah not so much. 😂
I thoroughly enjoyed this story and it did keep me guessing about who and why.

Wowza! If you're hunting a supernatural mystery then Once Upon A Death is one you cannot miss!
From the word go, Sullivan drew me into the reaper's tale with a day-in-the-life-of.. or rather, a drop-in of that final shift in a millennia-old job.
Kaah's age-old stint as collector of souls may be at an end, but his journey is just beginning. As the surprisingly human ex-reaper adjusts to life among mortals, it quickly becomes apparent that all is not as it seems in peaceful, accepting Deadend.
From flying corpses to complex relationships, an ever-present depth of intriguing supernatural lore and a beautifully woven story of unexpected discovery, this whodunnit had me hooked on every syllable.
Sullivan proves artful in bringing her characters, setting and plot to life in a way that had me dying for the next instalment.
10/10 would recommend to any fan of supernatural mysteries, strong character development and perfectly spiced humour.
I read this book in like 8 hours on a road trip. No, I wasn't driving! Not my usual genre, but was a great change of pace and style for me. It was effortless to read between scaring my driver with loud "HA!s" and getting into Kaah's head and that of his personal assistant, Rork. As much as I love Kaah, Rork steals the show. Dzintra Sullivan has a way of taking you to a place where you say to yourself, "self, I didn't see that coming at all." Also, as I sit here drinking coffee, I'll never look at it the same way again. Thanks for that (ugh!). I don't usually read cozies, but this one was witty, bordering on OMG, and the world she builds here, is just enough without being in your face. A perfect read for me, and I've put more books down lately than I've finished. Kaah and Rork will stay with me for a while.
Once Upon A death this book hit my kindle and i was so excited to read it that i did nothing at all but read. Kaah is a Reaper like no other set in a small town where he decides he wants to live and be more than just THE Reaper. Deadend is a small town and written in such a descriptive and beautiful way that it sounds just like home. The characters are each their own person with their own lives woven into their town which also helps make it sound like home ( trust me living in a small town i know lol). The story line and plot are amazing and set the scene for more books to come and that i hope is soon as the town and people in it can weave their way into your heart. There is a death and no poor Kaah didnt do it can he figure out who did?, can he figure himself out? will he stay and live or will he go and take his job back at being the reaper? ....to find out you need to read this amazing book
Great Read! If you are into mysteries with steady pacing, funny banter, and characters you won’t be able to walk away from - this is the book for you.
Kaah didn’t choose death, death chose him. What does that even mean? Hilarity. Sullivan hilariously offers up a tale that implies even a Reaper - ex Reaper - can get burnt out. You won’t be able to get enough of the merry band of characters that forms in the small town of Deadend after Kaah and his best goblin Rory show up.
I rated Sullivan’s newest work a 5 based on readability, plot development and pacing, witty banter, and over all fun. I’d recommend to anyone who likes steady paced mysteries, light and fun romance, and just overall great reads.
Once a reaper always a reaper. Kaah is a reaper, but he doesn’t want to be one anymore. He moves to a small town called dead end. Death follows him and pulls him into a murder investigation. Along the way he meets Jodi. Watch as he tries to ignore his attraction to her. Can he help find out who the murder is? Will he get a chance with Jodi even though she is human? Come help solve a mystery.
How does one start a review, on one of the coolest, most hip tellings of how Death, himself, would handle retirement? Between him having to get a REAL job on earth. To having Rork: a goblin friend/servant, who's witty, quick to help, and one to be as real as a character can get, in this beloved masterpiece. Dzintra slams this story, out of the ballpark!! If i could give it 1,000 stars, I would! Go purchase this book, and see just how fun it is.
Absolutely entertaining take on, in my opinion, a much maligned Supernatural
I'm not a loss for words, mind you. I am a writer after all. I've even written about the Reaper. Having copped to the truth, Once upon a Death is freaking awesome. In my humble, okay, that's not true. In my lofty opinion, this story about the Reaper is better than mine, hence the five 🌟's. I laughed so hard my cat ran away. Seriously, a unique and quite enjoyable look at what I refer to as the deadliest servant of the gods. Seriously, read it. You can thank me later.
I enjoy mysteries with humour and this book has the mystery. Unfortunately, humour has a different taste and meaning to everyone. The humour in this book did not amuse me, and the characters and story were not really portrayed well. Each to his/her own but, to me, this book would fit better in the YA category.
Found this book on Kindle looking for some humor to brighten up the lockdown due to Covid. Needed a bit of humor to brighten up the isolation.
New author to me, well written storyline, reader engaged in the plot as the story unfolds. Will now seek other titles by the same author. Interested to see how the series story line unfolds.
This book has left me with huge smile on my face. Really exciting read, with murder, mystery and lots of laugh out loud moments.
Kaah the Reaper has decided to hang up his scythe and give up reaping souls. Him and Rork move to Deadend in the hopes of a new start. New job and maybe meet new people....Only you can take the Reaper from death, but not death away from the Reaper hehe..
This was the first Dzintra Sullivan book I've read. It sure won't be the last. Each page dripped with delicious humour and fantastic characters. Kaah and Rork's master/servant relationship was hilarious and felt so real. So much fun to read. Awesome.
What happens when Death decides to retire? Kaah has been a reaper his entire existence. His life consisted of turning into a skeleton at night and collecting souls. Now he wants to retire and enjoy his days in the suburbs. He and his hobgoblin assistant move to a house in Deadend. For a being that never lived with human adjusting is hard. He has to learn to talk to people, how to drive a car and even how to order food.
However, death is never far away. :) When a dead body is dropped by his feet, he has a hard time staying away and is sucked in by the mystery.
It's such a fun read, there was something to lol on almost every page. It's a joy to read, there is a mystery, paranormal stuff, it's funny and the characters are great. :)
Once Upon a Death is a clever idea for a mystery novel and does a good job of introducing the characters and developing their personalities. I liked the town and the different events taking place in the town. I also enjoyed how the main character had to start doing normal things that were expected of him as a citizen of a small town. I enjoyed how the story evolved and how naturally the mystery was introduced into the story.
The only drawback I found was that the dialogue tended to be somewhat robotic at times and the writing could have been tightened up in my opinion, but that is likely a personal preference that others might disagree with.
I am pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book! Mystery isn’t really my genre but I’m so glad I read this Paranormal Mystery book. There is a touch of romance which is my usual genre but I’d of been fine if it wasn’t in it.
Kaah Maah had been the reaper for over a millennia; he pulls you into the storyline from the very beginning. I adored Rork; his assistant and best friend. The friendship between those two had me laughing several times. I look forward to what Dzintra Sullivan does next in this series!
Mrs. Sullivan out does herself with a quirky tale of what happens when death decides its time to retire. The characters in this book are brilliant and entertaining. Part of me wishes I could live in Deadend the fabled town my favorite reaper retires too. It feels like a good place to call home, if you don’t mind a few supernatural neighbors. Overall this book was fun, inventive and refreshing. I have longed for a new premise and this story hit all the marks. A definite must read!!! #Brathahood
Oh Kaah Maah you Bublé loving reaper. You really are trying to be Sherlock Holmes with your investigation skills in Deadend.
So Kaah retires from being the reaper and ends up in the small town of Deadend with his assistant Rork. To blend in with the community he ends up working at the local funeral home, seems he can’t get away from death especially when a dead body falls at his feet every night.
This book has twist and turns I never saw coming but still the fun side we’ve come to love with Dzintra Sullivan’s writing. Such a great book I can’t wait to see what happens with Kaah and the town folk of Deadend next.
The reaper decides to retire so he moves with his assistant and best friend, a hobgoblin, to a small town in Ohio. This begins a series of events a reaper should not have to face as the townspeople open their lives to him! Funny, fast-paced and unexpected!
Once Upon a Death was a delightful read by a new to me author!
I started this book with no expectations. I didn’t know if it was going to be scary, funny, or anything in between, and even now that I’ve finished it I’m hard pressed to label it with a genre. It’s an intriguing murder mystery story filled with elements of romance and the supernatural, and I loved every bit of it.
Kaah, the ex-reaper, is such a fun character. I was instantly drawn into him and Rork’s story, and I found it hard to put down. My only small complaint was that the ending came too fast! I wanted more, but I’m excited to see the series continues and I’ll be reading more by this author soon!

The whole concept of following the Grim Reaper on his journey into retirement piqued my interest right from the start. Now that I’ve finished this book, I can tell you that no one could pull off such a plot like Dzintra Sullivan. She’ll suck you into the world she created for Kaah and from the very beginning you’ll find it believable.
After Kaah hangs up his scythe, he retreats to a seemingly small, unassuming town where he should be able to live a relatively quiet life. But that’s not how things go for the retired Reaper. The fast-paced storyline quickly reveals a mystery that Kaah finds himself in the middle of. After taking up a new career at the most ironic of businesses, the mystery further unfolds and brings the reader along for a curious ride.
Sullivan writes the charming Kaah with flare and throws in memorable wit, sarcasm, and humor. His sidekick, Rork, adds an element of hilarity to many scenes as he gets himself mixed up with an unlikely hobby while assisting, and sometimes frustrating, Death himself.
This is a fun, consuming story that never fails to entertain. Trust me when I tell you, you’ll never think of the Grim Reaper the same again!
This book was unexpected. I expected it to be good, and it was all of that and so much more. The story is what I was not expecting but I loved it, absolutely. The author writes in a flowing style which is incredibly easy on the eye but none-the-less great writing. It is masterly practised prose which kept me turning those pages until the end. I love the main protagonists and I'm a sucker for anything with a whiff of romance. The characters are very likeable, the plot completely believable for all its supernatural connotations. I was hooked from the first paragraph onwards and continued to be suckered in as the story developed to its ultimate denouement. It's one of those stories which leaves you wanting more, and wanting to hear more about those characters. I'll look forward to another outing soon. It's lighthearted, funny, delightful and I can do no less than thoroughly recommend this book.
No one ever said it would be easy being the reaper, what with all the misrepresentation in the press and in literature, turns out he’s not such a bad guy. This is a funny tale of a reaper’s retirement and going to settle in a small town. I won’t give any spoilers, but I will tell you what I loved about this book and strangely for one who is not human, it’s his human side. I love his relationship with his best friend Rork and his uncomfortable interactions with the women that hold every powerful role around the town. This mix adds up to a delightful story, full of laughs and fun. The author’s voice is enjoyable and use of certain words (you’ll see what I mean) give it a unique character in the nicest possible way. All up, I would recommend this book to anyone who likes laughing and being engaged in a cool story.
