Penny White #7

The Weariness of Were-Wolves

Rate this book

‘I’ve been very patient,’ Raven said. ‘No drake will chase a draka who isn’t interested, or not yet ready for him. But you’re no longer attached to Peter, and you chose to remain in this world for my sake. How much longer am I to remain waiting and wondering, paradoxical Penny?’

Raven. The darkly beautiful search dragon has been a constant in my life ever since I first stumbled across the magical country of Lloegyr. Now he demands to know whether we have a future together.

But there are other challenges in my life. The humans stranded in Lloegyr need homes and jobs. Clyde is facing opposition as he explores a calling to the priesthood. A warren of traumatised were-rabbits has somehow become my responsibility. And what should I do about Llewelyn, the kind and generous were-wolf who wants us to be more than just partners in ministry?

Good thing Lloegyr has its own distilleries. Surviving all this will take copious amounts of whisky…

Priest by day, writer at odd times of the day and night, I live with a small green parrot called Tilly because the upkeep for a dragon is beyond my current budget. Plus I’m responsible for making good any flame damage to church property. I love ‘Doctor Who’, landscape photography, single malt whisky, and my job, in no particular order. When I’m not looking after a small parish church in the Midlands (England) I like to go on far flung adventures to places like Peru, New Zealand, and North Korea.

I've been enjoying the Penny White series on and off since I read the first book, and I'm glad to say that "The Weariness of Were-Wolves" is another excellent addition to the series.

For those of you who haven't read anything from it before, it's about a female Anglican priest who stumbles upon a magical alternate world populated by dragons, unicorns, and other fantastic beings. The Church exists on the other side of the divide too, and Penny becomes a kind of liaison between the two branches of it. Now she's stuck on the other side, and finds herself embroiled in Church politics, as well as personal problems.

The books often strike a light tone, with plenty of humor and nerdy references to Doctor Who and other fantasy classics, but they also deal with serious themes. In "The Weariness of Were-Wolves," Penny struggles with the ethics of meat-eating and violence, inter-species relationships, social justice versus unity for the Church, her spotty relationship with God, and a growing drinking problem. So while it reads like light fare, it delves into a number of important issues. Although the book, like the rest of the series, is unapologetically Christian, it doesn't provide pat answers or doctrinaire positions. Penny wrestles with her personal demons and her troubled relationship with her vocation in a way that people of all faiths and callings will be able to recognize. Recommended for fans of urban fantasy, Doctor Who, and readers who like to consider some of the deeper mysteries in life.

Chrys's books are a captivating blend of fantasy and social commentary, and this series in particular is an immediate read for me. I wait eagerly for each new installment and Weariness does not disappoint.

One would think being stranded in Lloegyr would be a dream for Penny White, but unfortunately it brings a whole new set of obstacles.

It's both humbling and heartbreaking to watch Penny as she tries to cope. Add the challenges faced by her unconventional family (Morey, Taryn, Jago & Clyde) to the situation with Raven and the care of her new "flock" of traumatized were-rabbits and you can sense the storm a-brewing in the distance. I laughed, I cried (real tears y'all), and experienced all the feels. As always, Penny White and the Weariness of Were-Wolves was well executed and highly enjoyable.

*** I received an advanced electronic copy from the author which I then chose to voluntarily review. ***

I continue to enjoy this fantasy series about a Church of England vicar who has become an ambassador to a parallel world filled with fantastical beasts including dragons, gryphons, unicorns, mermaids, and were-people of all sorts. Besides the fantasy themes, the author introduces a lot of social issues. It might be a bit heavy handed at times, but I appreciate her point of view, so it's not a problem for me.

Penny is stuck in Lleogyr, for good, thanks to her meddling with the thin places that let beings cross between. And she may be drinking a wee bit more than necessary, but circumstances do call for it. For one, all the humans stuck in Lleogyr are taking up residence in an apartment complex owned by the Consortium, and nothing from them is ever truly free. And now Penny is working with the not-weres, thanks to a gaffe made while trying to help out her fellow humans. It's not bad, but certainly not what she had hoped for. No, things are not ideal, but Penny hangs all her hope on the thought that she's doing what is best, no matter who might disagree.

This was a difficult book, watching Penny's downward spiral. But sometimes you have to hit rock bottom before you can start changing things. Now, if I can only get my hands on the next book asap. ;) As always, an excellent story with a surprising ending that leaves you wanting more.

Penny's life is complicated. The humans who are stuck in Lloegyr are in need of homes, food and jobs, Search dragon Raven is starting to want to know if they have a future together, were-wolf Llewelyn wants them to be more than just partners in the ministry, Clyde has a calling to become a priest (which is not universally accepted) and Penny gains responsibility for a warren of were-rabbits. Is it any wonder she has the occasional glass of whiskey to cope with it all?

Penny was certainly busy in this story. It was great to see her as very human in this one and that she can be just as susceptible as anyone else. Lets of drama and excitement in this one and I feel her relationship with Raven met a turning point at the very end - one that I sincerely hope brings them both happiness in the next book in the series. Well written and very enjoyable, this was a joy for anyone who loves stories set in fantastical worlds with dragons, unicorns, etc. Very much recommended.

As of the start of this book Penny is stranded in Lloegyr through her own choices. (If this sounds new to you, dear reader, please stop reading this and pick up the first books in the series. The review will be here when you get back.)

This is not an easy read as Penny's life spirals downwards. Again, mostly through her own choices - though some are less 'choice-full' than others. But, Penny and her 'family' unconventional grouping though it may be, have come to matter to me as a reader. Author Cymri brings them and their trials to life.

There are light-hearted moments, moments that make you want to both laugh and cry, and moments of sheer outrage. Again, it takes a talented author do to that a reader.

And it takes a bit of cheek from a reader to immediately want the next book, but there you have it. I'm going to be cheeky. Next, please? Puhlease?!

Penny and her various “family” members, along with others, are unable to return home now that the thin places have all been sealed between Great Britain and Lloegyr. Penny’s relationship with Raven, the Search Dragon, continues to be unsettled, Jago still cannot fly, and my most beloved Clyde is still determined to be the first Snail Shark to be priested. Added to Penny’s problems are the intentions of the Werewolf, Llewelyn. There is not one thing I don’t love about this series, and I am beyond sad that there are only two more to go. There is the perfect balance of fantasy and religion in the series and characters that I want in my life (especially Clyde 😊).

I thoroughly enjoyed it

This whole series so far has been amazing. My kindle battery nearly dead but I had to finish. The way that the real Christians all support Clyde is marvellous and so they should

As I always say in these reviews, you really need to start with book one to get the true value of the series. Also, it’s becoming increasingly more difficult to write these reviews without giving away any spoilers. However, there were some great new themes in the Weariness of Were-Wolves that I want to share with you.

One is that we have our first same-sex relationship! I always comment on how inclusive this series is (even if many of the characters are fictional beings). The author frequently touches on the important issue of race but to have same-sex relationships in this book is a wonderful inclusion.

In the previous books, we saw the strength of Penny and how she is always there for her friends. Now the tables have turned and Penny needs her friends more than ever. She is struggling not only with personal problems but to see that her friends have her own interests at heart. I can’t wait to see how this storyline evolves.

Picking up a new Penny White book is like coming home. The sense of familiarity it brings comforts me every time – even in this crazy year we are experiencing.
