Another grand adventure with Fergus and Diana. This time it’s a search for Steve, Diana’s ex- who may or may not be alive, on top of the investigation into a set of 30 year old bones found on Diana’s land. Fergus is as irreverent as ever, but may be facing a threat to his “friendship” with Diana in the form of a new Sheriff/DCI in town.

This is book five in the Diana Flowers Floricultural Mystery series and has Diana expanding her flower plant base, by planting some lupins, but finding bones instead! She was digging the earth in a new area, to put in her new lupins, when Diggory, her somewhat wild pet dog, runs off with a bone. She then finds more under the earth and the fact one of them is a human skull, makes it clear this is no old animal skeleton she has uncovered with Diggory’s assistance. She needs to report this to the police, but with her recent dealings with a certain detective in charge, Detective Walter Miller, she knows he will think she is responsible for the body – even if it’s a pile of bones!

Fergus, her overfriendly, conspiracy theorist and author, has a theory about who the bones might belong to and this time it might turn out to be true. Most of his ideas are pretty far out and his web site has tons of followers for all his outlandish theories. This however, may be based on a more local link. Looking at the age of the bones, no actual body this time, means this happened about 20 years ago, if not more. Diana will have to wait for the ineffective detective to get back to her, but it seems he may be getting replaced, and by someone that doesn’t have a grudge against Diana and her family! A Detective Scott Langley.

Tracing back through the history of the area and any missing people, soon link Fergus’ theory with a real case of a missing Lord of the Manor nearby. What is now Diana’s land, is where the Manor house used to be, before it burnt down shortly after the Lord went missing. His car was found elsewhere and it was thought he had disappeared to avoid some large money problems, leaving his wife and daughter behind. All the fuss about this old missing person case draws the press to Diana’s home and business, inadvertently placing one of her signs in the news and leaving her snowed under with work and with media people all over her property and access, even tramping over her flowers.

At about the same time, Diana signs for a delivery, only to find what looks like a bomb inside, leaving the bumbling Walter to act like a hero and end up with a promotion. It turns out the package contains a desperate message from her missing ex-boyfriend and previous workmate, George. Turns out after his desperate visit before Christmas, that he has gotten into some trouble and needs some help, only problem is, he hasn’t exactly said why or even where he is. So, now Diana has two cases to work on and her friend Fergus supposedly helping her, as well as loads of new business selling her flowers.

Having to keep their previous interactions with the mysterious IngCorp and its actions nearby secret, leave her wondering if they may be responsible for George’s disappearance and who was responsible for the mystery surrounding the missing Lord. Both mysteries add to the drama in the book and even take Diana and Fergus, with their dogs, into London for the day and add a lovely bit of doggy led chaos and danger. Solving one of the biggest conspiracies that has ever happened in their neck of the woods, will take all of their skills, persistence and doggedness. Another great addition to the series!

Each of the books is a readalone mystery, but you will get so much more from reading all the other books in the series. We get to find out whether Diana and Fergus’ romance will get off its feet finally and what on earth happened to George. Getting to solve the mystery of the missing Lord and not having to deal with the old detective, Walter, mean Diana gets listened to this time. But, does this new detective have some sort of agenda of his own? His move from London to a quiet little town is rather an unusual one. There must be something more behind matters. Something else for Diana to figure out whilst business carries on as usual.

Also add in justice finally being found for the young female victim, killed in the wife’s (of the Lord) home, on the night he disappeared, now the actual culprit might have been found! Her family will now be able to rest in peace, knowing someone has finally been found responsible for her murder and the proof confirms it. It had always been thought that this was part of the reason for the Lord’s disappearance. Diana’s ideas of justice finally bring the cases to a satisfying conclusion. Another fascinating read with loads of mystery, mixed in with a historical case of murder, danger, doggy chaos and even some romance. I received an ARC copy of this book from the author and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

The Lord Beneath the Lupins #5 – I enjoy reading this series and The Lord is no exception. All of the books in this series is actual substantial compared to many of the cozy mysteries; with plenty of planning and research and common sense. Ms. Loren has put plenty of changes and twists in this story giving the reader a glimpse of what is to come. The old storylines merged well with the present storylines and the future books promise several good mysteries to solve as well as pursuing an influential evil monster. There is a good change with some of the characters. Diana gets a bit naughty with some of her actions, but with good reason. There are lots of trust issues going around that add more intrigue to the pages. OK, I will stop here; I am starting to sound like a book report, which goes against my grain. Reviews are not book reports. Needless to say, The Lord is taking this series into deeper muck with different road to travel from the previous books. I contacted this talented author to review her books. 5*

Diana Flowers series:
The Florist and the Funeral #0 - The prequel to the Diana Flowers series. A quickly read, fun story about a chemist, with a high IQ, interested in growing and selling flowers to meet the growing demand. Along the way there's a death, which she solves since she is smarter than the old Lt. There's quite a bit going on in this novella and the "killer" is a big surprise and not what you expect. Another series that may be the match for Madi's zoo series. I contacted the author to review her books and received this one. 5*

Gardenias and a Grave Mistake #1 - My favorite series by this author is the Madi Amos Zoo Mysteries, but this is an interesting series so far. The prequel should be read first to get the foundation, The Florist and the Funeral. I like both Fergus and Diana; they're perfectly matched to each other, tin-foil hat optional. The other characters worked in their roles. The story took a little bit to get rolling but it did get interesting and had some good twists. Diggory is a character all of his own. I was disappointed that Di let the nematodes get to her; there's an easy, nonpoisonous fix to get rid of those critters, but there's always a change that works out better in the end as I found with Madi's series. Included with the story is a free offering of the prequel and a list of edible flowers. I contacted the author to review her book. 4.5*

Delphiniums and Deception #2 - This story had me so immersed in it that I just let it carry me along. The bunker had overtures of several sources, including the Saw series, so I saw several ways this could have worked out. Several people in a isolated location with a murderer and the deceased. But Ms. Loren made this theme her own and unique, and it was hard to put the book down. I figured out three possible murderers, but I missed. I liked the way the Floral Arrangement retreat was arranged; and certainly enjoyed the punishment feature of the classes. There are many interesting storylines for the characters. Fergus really shined brightly in this story, from his heartwarming gift to his ability to surprise. 4*

Poinsettias and The Perfect Crime #3 - A good addition to the series, with plenty of new characters and twists. There are plenty of storylines weaving their contributions throughout this story, all well thought out and moving at a good pace. There is still the funny and interesting relationship between Diana and Fergus, adding to the mix of townsfolk and new characters. The new characters are developed just enough pull their share and are believable - you believe they're up to something. Fergus pulls his load and comes up smelling like a rose again. There's a bit of originality with the crime and a very good surprise with one of the special characters. There's traces of Egypt and India meshed in behind the scenes that lend a different flavor to this series. I contacted the author to review her books. 5*

Peonies and Poison #4 – Wow, the best book of the series and Fergus plays a big role. I loved the way the book started with the new florist in town and I enjoyed the conspiracy. Quite a bit of intrigue to keep the reader immersed in the story. Ms. Loren writes a bit above the regular cozy mold and this book is above her usual. Good suspense, good mystery, good descriptions; all that make this a must read. I contacted the author to review her books. 5*

The Lord Beneath the Lupins by Ruby Loren

Book Five in the Diana Flowers series

The book opens with Diana busy planting one of her new fields with orange lupins - plants which erstwhile flower enthusiasts will know are a magnet for all the slugs and snails in a five mile radius (believe me, they sit in hiding watching and waiting while you carefully plant your latest treasures only to pounce the second you're finished and turn your back. By the time you reach the house and look back to admire your work all you will see is an empty expanse of ground while you can hear echoes of the mocking laughter from the combined army of slugs and snails as they make their way towards the next victims garden. Yes, you guessed correctly, I too have tried - and failed - to grow lupins).
However the unlucky lupins are the unfortunate victims of a different curse this time, in the form of a skeleton complete with a hole in its head.
Yet again Ruby Loren spins a tale which includes hints of a possible solution to another story, a continuation of something which began in the previous novel; an answer to a question which had been quietly bugging Diana as well as a possible new ally for Diana and Fergus against a mega corporation, all while involving the reader in a storyline which, once begun, I couldn't put down until I had finished.
Truly one of the UK's top writers in the mystery genré, Ruby Loren never fails to impress and has managed once again to write a book which leaves the reader breathlessly waiting for more.

I've read every story in this series so far and consider this one of the most enjoyable so far. 😊 A fun mix of mysteries and Diana Flowers is in the thick of things with conspiracy theorist Fergus and a new twist. The Peter Principle has moved Diana's local police nemesis Walt Miller on to bigger and better things. His replacement is younger, well-muscled and competent, but can Diana trust him? And will she ever discover what happened to former fiance and fellow chemist George? Or why a 30 year-old mystery has been laid at her doorstep?

The mystery surrounding George's whereabouts was my favorite part of this story, but Diana has to worry about George while dealing with the murderous mess she turned up while digging in her own backyard. Her flower business takes backstage while bones, mysterious emails, an unsolicited package with a cryptic message, sinister "journalists" and worries about the far-reaching INGCORP occupy her attention. There's so much going on! It's bewildering fun and at times dangerous, but Diana once again puts her chemistry knowledge and gray cells to good use and finds the answers.

Look for good writing, lots of plot threads, a little mischief-making from some beloved pets, and a smidgen of romance to round out a pretty great mystery.

I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.

The fifth book in a fun to ready cozy mystery! Diana Flowers and her "side-kick" Fergus a conspiracy theorist are in the middle of it again. While Diana was planting her Lupins in trying to reclaim a garden, she comes upon a skeleton. Fergus believes it is the dead body of a missing man who mysteriously disappeared years ago. Will Diana and Fergus get involved in this cold case? Of course they will, after all the skeleton was found on Diana's property. Could the evil far-reaching INGCorp be involved in this? What about her missing ex George? And then there is a new DCI assigned to the town and her nemesis DCI was assigned to another town very quickly. Is something sinister going on? The new DCI comes with far too many incredible credentials to be assigned to their little quiet town. Drug dealers? What?!! Ruby weaves all types of strange threads together to reach a great conclusion! And how will the new DCI Langely continue to fit into the little town? How will he fit in with Diana and Fergus? I LOVE this series which is so deftly created by the imagination of Ruby Loren and you will too! I received an ARC from the author but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

The story of Lord Lucan with a twist

A good read. Okay not the best as I've never enjoyed reading about Lord Lucan but it does have an interesting twist. The characters are slightly off in this book especially the main one. Not sure how but there is a difference to her in previous books.
Planting lupins would have been a quiet activity if she hadn't found the skeleton, had to call the police (and again have to deal with the bigoted officer), found a bullet hole in the skull and had a ticking parcel delivered to her. A parcel that contained a clock in the shape of a bomb. Was the skeleton that of the missing Lord that allegedly killed the nanny? A secret message in the clock, a piece of paper, photographs of a crime scene, a phone call and a raid. Will she be able to work out who killed the nanny? Is her former boyfriend still alive? Why was there an extra bone with the skeleton? Will the all powerful organisation get back at her?

Diana is digging up a new field where she wants to plant her lupines when she discovers bones. Her friend Fergus is sure she has found Lord Rushmore. 30 years ago Lord Rushmore's wife accused him of killing the personal assistant and he was never seen after that. Could it be him? Diana is also worried about her ex-boyfriend George. He has disappeared. Nobody has heard from him or seen him. Where could he be? Detective Chief Inspector Walter Miller gets sent to a different town. The new DCI seems to be over qualified for the job. Is there something else going on? This is a multi-layered plot with interesting characters. Mystery, action, suspense. The best story in the series so far. Very well written.
I voluntarily received a copy of this book and I'm voluntarily posting a review. My opinion is entirely my own.

This is the latest in this very enjoyable and well researched cosy mystery series. The main character, Diana, is very believable and well written and the other characters are also very well described, this really helps bring the story into focus.
The story is quite involved which makes this a satisfying read, and this is enhanced by the appearance of a new police detective to the village, especially as it isn't clear if he is on the side of the angels, or not!
There are references to occurences in earlier books in the series, but this doesn't prevent this from being a great stand-alone read, although as always with series, it is better to read them in sequence to watch things develop.
I received an advance copy of the book from the author, but have voluntarily written this honest review.

Here we have an old case, a cause célèbre in its day, which brings the conspiracy light to Fergus's eyes and also brings the press in hordes to annoy Diana – and incidentally advertise her flower business. And balancing the now-solved historical disappearance of the desperate lord we have the still-mysterious disappearance of Diana's treacherous ex, George. A baffling note suggests he, at any rate, is still alive, but Diana will need to help the police with both cases to bring a modicum of justice and freedom to the more-or-less innocent. A very satisfying story, with an excellent new character and an ingenious puzzle. It held my attention really well.

Two mysteries in one. First is the body that is found when doing planting. I hope the Lupins survived. Second is what happened to George. Now add the issue of INGCORP and other conspiracy theories.

Diana seems to lose focus sometimes but how she finally figured it out amazes me. I had it figured out earlier than her when a key piece was mentioned. Rad the book to find out.

Wow book 5 in the series. amazing to me ; feels like I just started reading this series. I was really grateful for the little hints of past books to help my aging memory, lol.

This is my honest and freely given review. I did receive an ARC book.

Muddled

Another great mystery by the talented Ruby Loren. Diana and Fergus are still trying to find proof that INGCORP is a corrupt entity. They get tangled up in the mystery of the death of Lord Rushmore, the murder of his wife's personal assistant, and the ever pressing problem of locating George. Everything is so muddled that I am surprised Diana did not have a stroke or, at least, a panic attack. She and Fergus stumble and bumble around in their usual crime-solving routine until all the pieces fit and justice is served.
A really intriguing little mystery with a new character added for good measure.

Diana is in trouble again....she's found yet another body, and her nemesis on the police force, Walter Miller, is only too keen to arrest her.....but suddenly he's no longer there.

In his place is a young, attractive officer from London...could he be a rival to Fergus for Diana's affection?

The plot is loosely based on the Lord Lucan affair, but has enough red herrings, twists, and surprises to make it fresh.

The addition of London as the setting for some scenes is a bonus.

As usual, the plot moves along smoothly and the characters are well written and well rounded.

This is an enjoyable addition to the series.

Well Diana does it again! This time finding bones under the plot for lupins. We could say it was all Diggory's fault as he found them first. As usual Fergus turns up with his conspiracy theories.

A change to the normal with this story as nasty Walter Miller has been replaced by the dishy DCI Scott Langley who isn't intent on arresting Diana.

Lots going on involving Diana's ex George and INGCORP.

A good murder mystery with plenty of humour thrown in plus a teaser whether a romance may flourish in future books between Diana and Fergus or would the new DCI give Fergus a challenge.

Altogether very enjoyable.

Plot of ground that hadn’t been touched in thirty years, having already encountered bricks and rubble, and now. It caught her attention, can’t be of importance, her hound may have buried it. Thoughts of “ not again”, can I cover it up, then curiosity came to play. Another delightful, charming story. I especially enjoyed this one, the plot flowed, and one was caught up from the beginning. Was also curious, for knew it would be a cold case.
Readers will definitely enjoy another story in this series. Give. ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.

I love this cozy mystery series and think this is the best so far. Diana finds bones in her garden and reopens a 30 year old mystery. There are several big changes in this book and I’m not going to spoil the surprise for you! This author’s writing is always fresh and skillful. The plot is tight and multi-layered, and the characters are well drawn and believable. It was an enjoyable read and I’m looking forward to future installments. Another great book from this author. Diana was just breaking ground on her last fallow field, so that she could plant her new Lupin seedlings, when she discovered a human skeleton. Her friend Fergus turned up and told her that it was probably the remains of Lord Rushmore, who had gone missing in the area thirty years before. The investigating police trampled her seedlings; she got inundated by reporters; and her ex-boyfriend sent her a mysterious message. Although she didn't want to, she found herself investigating the mystery along with Fergus.

There really seems to be little hope that INGCORP, whatever and whomever they really are, will get any final justice.

Diana and Fergus live to debate another day, and currently face some success - which seems another sort of a trap to me. The duo have an odd crush with little romance, alongside some jealous bits as Fergus flirts his way into gaining info and Diana is admired into some police assistance.

Perhaps a few wrongs might be righted along the way. I foresee more chaos ahead. What fun! Great KU mystery read!

Diana Flowers is a former chemist who grows and markets flowers. Fergus is a cohort who is into conspiracy theories. When Diana uncovers a skeleton while transplanting her lupins, the local police and news descend on the scene. In the midst, Diana receives an odd package that she has to decode. Can the murderer be found?

This is my favorite Diana Flowers to date. Her chemistry plays key to one of the mysteries. The new detective is actually a detective. Although a series, each story can be read individually. Loved it!

Diana and Fergus find themselves in the middle of yet another fun mystery. Lord Rushmore died over 30 years ago and although he was thought to be alive and in hiding, he was in fact killed at the same time as his wife’s personal assistant. Can Diana and Fergus solve the mystery before the new DCI? Will Fergus use the information he has about the Lord’s murder for yet another conspiracy theory? All this and a great cast of characters make this a fun and enjoyable story that should be added to your TBR list.

While Diana is planting a new crop of flowers that she thinks will go well with her clients. She digs up a bone, and then proceeds to uncover an entire skeleton. She calls Fergus, who decides that along with all his other conspiracy theories, that she has dug up a 30-year-old cold case. He may actually be right.

With the sudden replacement of the local DCI, This has just become a lot better of a series, and I think it is definitely the best book in the series.

Diana tries to do the right thing. Unfortunately, she's easily distracted. But things frequently work out. It seems that this story needed crutches. One to fill a plot hole. And another to add tension. Both of which added words, but neither of which were satisfying to me. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the story.

Entertaining. Tragic. Twisted. Unpredictable. Wonderful characters.

I received a copy of this book as a gift. This is my honest review.

Miss Marple with green fingers and with just a touch of wit and sarcasm sums up my first thoughts of this book. Diana is a florist and with Fergus her friend, writer and conspiracy theory lover both investigate or maybe just kind of fall into murders and unsolved crimes. With lots of comedic scenarios that had me cracking up. A funny and witty book that is also a blooming (pun intended!) good read

I liked that this book wrapped up some lingering items from other books in the series. The story continued to develop the relationship between Diana and Fergus. The introduction of the New DCI added a nice layer of developing character relationships The mysteries were multiple and well developed keeping the reader thoroughly engaged. I look forward to reading more of Diana and Fergus adventures

Diane seems a magnet for trouble, or should I say dead bodies. Between Fergus and his conspiracy theories, their crazy dogs, a sister who is a journalist, and a police chief who only considers any evidence that he can accuse her of malfeasance her life is anything but serene. Come along and join the chaos. The adventures just keep getting better.

The fifth in the Diana Flowers series has Diana finding human bones when planting lupines in a field that hadn’t been used in a long time. She and her conspiracy theory loving sidekick, Fergus, get involved in searching out answers to this old murder. The story keeps moving, side stories and interesting characters keep it interesting. This series is best read in order.

Diana and Fergus are back at it with another mystery (or two) to solve. While digging in her garden Diana unearths human bones that reopens a 30 year old mystery. Next, a ticking package is delivered that also contains a cryptic note hidden inside. This series is full of great characters and is best read in order since each story builds on the previous book.
