I always enjoy Emily Murdoch's historical romance's and this is another 5 star reading experience!!

It takes place during the French Revolution, a time of chaos. Gorgeous Prince Eduard, is out on his own looking for a spy who is supporting the murderous Revolutionaries with information.
Beautiful Giselle, whose noble family she worked for were killed, she flees. The Prince sees her at a tavern and according to him, she looks suspicious.
I'm not crazy about series, I make excceptions if I like the authors previous books. So I anticipate book 2.

This book was super cute! Giselle is a beauty who has been forced to spy and is on the run. Eduard is a prince searching for the Great Whisperer so he can help. Eduard never once thought that the whisperer could be a woman. He has no idea that he is trapped with the "man" he has been searching for.

This book was a short and sweet and honestly hot regency romance. I 100% am going to continue with this series!

Steamy with a story.
I never really thought about the nobility in France during the revolution. Of course there would be spies and others, trying to save them.
In the middle of all the chaos and danger, there is a small island. You can guess what happens when a beautiful woman and a handsome man have to keep each other warm during a cold Christmas night...

I originally read this story as part of the box set 'Seduced Under the Mistletoe' and this is what I said about these stories:
"Oh Wow! This Christmas anthology of 15 steamy-hot romances by 15 authors who know just how to capture the reader's imagination and keep one turning pages is a total delight!
"This is the perfect gift for the time of the year and I am quite happy to recommend it.

Peril with a Prince, Ravishing Regencies Book 0 by Emiky E K Murdoch.

Stranded on a deserted island, Eduard and Giselle's suspicion of one another soon gives way to other feelings entirely. A short-but-saucy story to kick-off a series of interlinked (but relatively standalone) tales.

I enjoyed this novella, but I did feel that Eduard and Giselle's instant-love was a little out of place as the connection didn't really build enough to support it quite so early on. I would have preferred the realisation to come later, when they parted on the island. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, after all!

I also thought that Giselle's behaviour was rather incongruous with one purportedly 'innocent' prior to their first intimate encounter. I'm not sure that 'she's French!' is enough reason for her to approach the situation with such confident abandon, or so few concerns about ruination. Pregnancy would have cost her everything, including her main objective; finding her brother. That she gave this no pause seemed out of character for a spy living in her wits.

The writing is rather clunky throughout with a lot of clumsy repetition, but it is not so bad as to hinder my enjoyment. (For example: "She managed to get out of the boat after grabbing a small dagger from the bottom of the boat." Or, "Eduard could hardly admit it to himself, but if he was honest with himself he was a bit afraid of her."

The narrator, Julia Eve, put in an engaging performance once more, handling the French accents well and contributing to the sense of peril in the more turbulent moments.

I'd recommend this audiobook to people who like HEA's, flamboyant historical romances, and the idea of being castaway with a handsome prince. The perfect holiday listening for a day on the beach!

Super cute, super quick, this first in series is set in England, at a time when the French are attempting to clean up after their revolution by making a bigger mess.

Content warnings:

- Blackmail
- Espionage
- Revolutionary Trauma
- Historical Trauma (as in, character’s history)
- Stranding
- Survival skills

Characters of Colour?

No; there were Italian characters, whom were not considered “white” at this time in history, but there were no Black folx, no folx beyond the English, & the French (nobility). There are also only two characters who appear in more than one scene, so I can forgive this.

Disabled characters?

There’s certainly a lot of trauma in the pasts of both these characters, which has left one of them with hyper awareness that is noted as being distinctly well prepared for any eventuality.
There are no physical disabilities mentioned, no intellectual disabilities, & no mention of any ongoing mental health issues - despite some discussion of trauma.

QUILTTBAG/ Queer characters?

I guess it could be interesting to read this with at least a Bisexual lens, but the relationship that time & effort is put into is a cis-het one, with no explicit discussion of Queer identity.

Worth my time?

This took me all of 2 hours to read. Definitely quick, but undeniably satisfying, I found. There’s a little bit of Insta-Love, though friction & admiration preceded it, if only by a hair. It was highly enjoyable.

Re-read?

If I got hold of this series, and it’s all this good?
H*ck yes, I would happily re-devour this book as part of a series run.

Recommend?

Have you got a spare hour or two, & want something quick, heartfelt, & a little bit wild? This is absolutely for you.

MY RATING GUIDE: 2.5 Stars. I had expected to enjoy this little novella but it was more of a teaser than a complete story so I was disappointed. Perhaps if I was already invested in this author’s characters or her other books I might have enjoyed PERIL as a brief interlude or as an intro. With that thought, other readers may enjoy this novella much more than I.
1= dnf/What was that?; 2= NOPE; NOT FOR ME; 3= This was okay/cute; 3.5= I enjoyed it; 4= I liked it a lot; 5= I Loved it, it was great! (I seldom give 5 Stars).

Christmas Eve during the French Revolution of 1798 ~
Following the murder of her beloved family, Giselle flees France and begins working undercover as the Great Whisperer assisting French nobilities escape the clutches of the guillotine from inside England. At a planned waterfront meeting of one of her contacts, a man suddenly accosts her. Not guessing Giselle’s true identity, Eduard, age 29, claims he is after the Great Whisperer and she must assist him in capturing “him.”

Comments ~
1) PERIL WITH A PRINCE begins with the classic mix up of identity - not my favorite conflict device/trope as numerous misunderstandings soon followed which otherwise might have been avoided. This was a large basis of the story.
2) PERIL WITH A PRINCE is the prologue to a series but there simply wasn’t enough present to hook me into the books which follow. I liked the use of dialogue but the characters repeated themselves.
3) PERIL was quite nicely performed by Julia Eve. I would purchase a book read by her again.

READER CAUTION ~
PROFANITY - Yes, but mostly in French.
VIOLENCE - None.
SEXUAL SITUATIONS - Yes. 2 scenes of intimacy.

A prince hiding his identity, and a woman hiding hers – and sparks will fly when they have only each other to rely on…

Prince Éduard of Aviroux is hunting down the Great Whisperer, the spy helping the French nobility escape the guillotine, and he’s so close when thwarted by the delectable Giselle.
Will Éduard discover Giselle's terrible secret - or will he reveal some of his own? And can a perilous time with a prince ever lead to something more than just the heady delights of the flesh?
Will revealing their secrets be the end for both of them or turn into an everlasting love and passion? It is a somewhat steamy read.

I read this short regency in one sitting. The story has it's moments of passion and secrets revealed.
I gave this book 4.3 of 5.0 stars for storyline and characterization. This book is the prequel of the new Ravishing Regencies series.
I received a complimentary copy of this book to read. This in no way affected my oppinion of this title which I read and reviewed voluntarily.

This was a French Revolution romance and did not take place during the Regency time period. Prince Éduard of Aviroux is searching for the spy the Great Whisper, who is helping French nobles, because he is a French nobleman himself and he doesn’t like that the revolutionaries are killing French citizens based on their birth. He sees Giselle meeting with a man in a tavern and thinks that man is the spy he is looking for. When Giselle and the man run, he catches her in a boat and they end up stuck on an island. She was a servants’ daughter, whose parents were killed because they worked for French nobles. There is confusion as they both think the other is on the side of the revolutionaries. Their romance happened very quickly and it seems to end just as quickly when she leaves him behind on the island with no way to get off. I would have liked to have known more about the man Giselle met with and what happened to her brother. Maybe that will be revealed in a future story.

Peril with a Prince is a hot period romance about a French spy who gets trapped on an island with a Prince. The story has a bit of intrigue and a lot of romance. These short, spicy romances are a bit difficult for me as they seem to progress at a rather unrealistic pace and the couples fall in love so fast, but so far this is one of the better ones in the series.

Recommended for mature readers only. Contains graphic sex scenes.

The narrator is well suited for these books. Her male voices could use some work, and some of the spicier scenes are occasionally cringeworthy, but overall she does a pretty good job.

I received a complimentary copy of this audiobook. This is my honest and voluntary review.

Peril with a Prince

What a fool. He could far more easily swallow the lie that she was hunting
down the Great Whisperer than the truth that she was the Great Whisperer.
Men. What idiots they were. I loved the storyline. The only thing that bothered me
while Giselle’s character being a spy was naturally more matured. Éduard’s at times
was more that of a teenager out on an adventure. And then near the end it flip flopped.
I would have liked to see Giselle do a little more apologizing. Especially in the last
few chapters she seemed rather spoiled. Ala in all I enjoyed the book and look forward to reading story. And also finding out what became of Pierre.

I’ve always loved stories where things slip away from what we expect — that feeling of, at the most inconvenient moment, you who had everything carefully planned suddenly find something that completely overshadows your plans, no matter how hard you try to return to them…

And that’s exactly how this couple is: at first glance, they seem gracefully opposite, each wanting something the other appears to stand in the way of.

I had the opportunity to experience the story first as a book and then as an audiobook, and I recommend both. The reading captivates you with its details, while the audiobook immerses you in the experience.

Giselle d’Epilucon never meant to be a spy. Fate intervened though and to save her brother she became the spy known as the Great Whisperer.
Prince Eduard Aviroux sought to join the Great Whisperer to help save the French nobility from the revolutionaries. Eduard never dreamed the spy he sought was actually a woman. Thrown together can Giselle trust Eduard and can he come to believe the beautiful woman is actually the one he seeks?

Peril With a Prince is fast-paced, suspenseful and romantic. Two people trapped on a deserted island, both of whom are evasive, leads to misunderstandings and misdirection. Christmas dinner was not their usual fare, but they weren't lacking in mutual attraction. The story is well-written and comes to a satisfactory close. It also ties up with other books in the Ravishing Regencies series by this author.

In a world of danger, two souls find each other, although they are being deceptive. This deception almost cost them their opportunity for love. Giselle was a strong woman, doing what she had to in order to protect family. I loved how Eduard wanted to help Giselle. Julia Eve put feeling into her narration. I have been enjoying this series.

I received a copy of this audiobook as a gift, and this is my unsolicited review.
