An incubus who'd rather die than feed... and a witch determined to save him.
Ryan has never enjoyed being an incubus. He hates the hunger that constantly plagues him and hates the need to feed off the sexual desire of others. But most of all he hates the power of his aura and how it removes the inhibitions of other people. Ryan is not about to push himself on a person magically forced into being willing. Instead he spends his weekends at various clubs, gleaning what he can off the energy in the air. And the handsome, all-too-tempting new bouncer at one of his regular haunts? Ryan can deal. He’s gotten good at denying himself.
Chris is a tattoo artist by trade and a bouncer as a favor to a friend. He also happens to be a witch with a talent for reading auras that is second to none, and he’s been paying attention to frequent club-goer Ryan for a while. Sure Ryan's gorgeous and totally his type, but beneath that glossy exterior Chris can tell he's in pain - and his aura is so weak it's scary. When he steps in to stop Ryan from getting unwanted attention from a handsy club patron, he realizes Ryan is an incubus… and that he’s starving himself to death.
Ryan needs to feed before it's too late, but can Chris convince him it's not just about sex? Will Ryan ever believe that someone might want him of their own free will?
Riley Rivers has been writing since they were a wee thing and aspires to be That Person who regularly sits in coffeeshops with a laptop and knows all the baristas. They are well on their way to achieving this dream.
This was quite the emotional ride, a witch and an incubus who has been starving himself because he doesn't understand his powers and feels like he is taking advantage of others! Chris and Ryan are so sweet and adorable together while also scorching hot in the sack! What a wonderful read!
This could have been so good. If these guys would just have communicated! But unfortunately this entire story was based on these guys keeping all their feelings and thoughts to themselves.
Ryan is an incubus and he hates that his aura makes people want him. People always try to touch him and he feels guilty that he’s making people do that. So that’s why he’s starving himself. It used to be enough to be in a club and absorb people’s lusty feelings. But now it doesn’t seem to do the trick.
When bouncer Chris encounters the starving incubus, he knows exactly what’s wrong. Since Chris is a witch, he feels that Ryan has not been feeding. When they both leave for the night, Chris asks Ryan out for coffee the next day. And Ryan accepts, even though he’s not quite sure why Chris would want to go out with him.
When Ryan faints during their date the next day, Chris tells him he is a witch and offers to help Ryan out as a willing sex partner. And even though Ryan accepts because he really does want Chris, he’s sad that Chris only wants him because he wants to help him out, not because he’s attracted to him…
This book was really frustrating. These guys both think the other one doesn’t want them and that doesn’t get cleared up for most of this book. Chris also takes a really long time to explain to Ryan that he’s wrong about how his powers work. Something constantly seemed to come up and I can’t tell you how frustrating that was.
They literally left me hanging. They cut of the story in my opinion to soon and two books could had turn into one whole book. But still a cute enjoyable short story.
this was amazing.. so much fun.. interesting and kept me on the edge of my seat curious to know what was next. i had to click as fast as i could to find out.. i cannot wait to see what book 2 brings.. this was wonderful
I love the easy flow of Riley’s writing and Ryan and Chris are just wonderful to read.
I loved Ryan! I haven’t read about an incubus before but I loved Riley’s take on the creature. Ryan is shy, lonely, and has a lot of self-loathing due to being an incubus. He mistaken knowledge of how his powers work has haunted him his whole life until he meets Chris. I thought Chris was a great, well-rounded character. Endearing, caring but not overbearing. He sparks up a friendship with Ryan, even though they both want more.
As there friendship grows, so does their feelings. I liked that this story wasn’t about fated mates but friendship to feelings type of story. The story ends with a happy for now ending that I hope there will be more of in the coming books. Ryan and Chris’s interactions were hot and I really enjoyed Ryan coming out of his shell once they admitted their feelings for each other!
This is a great, light, story that you can easily devour in one sitting!
Nothing wrong with the writing, but something was amiss. I didn't quite get Ryan. Did something bad happen in his past that he is so upset about being an incubus? Or is it because he is shy? Or is he just repulsed by the idea that people like him, because he is an incubus and not because of him as a person. Since the whole book revolved about Ryan's issues with being an incubus, I would have expected a bit more about it. Another thing that bothered me was that Ryan didn't know anything about incubi apart from the things he learned from his demented grandmother. If I was that miserable with my life I'd have done some research about my kind a long time ago. It shouldn't have been that hard, considering that Chris found something within a short amount of time, even though he didn't seem to be the most internet-savvy person to have around. Lastly, I didn't get the thing the two of them had. They didn't really talk to each other and they didn't really know a lot about each other. A lot of important things just happened in their minds, while they should have addressed them verbally. So yeah, not really my cup of tea, but I'm sure other people will love this book. 2,5 stars.
This was a delightful story full of angst as Ryan, and Incubus fights himself to keep from taking advantage of people and starving because of it. Chris is a witch and tattoo artist. Meeting Ryan at the bar he is a bouncer, he sees his aura is sickly and thin. The two get together and Chris holds back in trying to start a relationship with Ryan so as not to take advantage of him. Thus a relationship full of angst and misunderstanding, starts to grow. Throw in a stalker and you have a really entertaining book that I would recommend to the other paranormal nuts out there like me. I voluntarily read and reviewed this ARC book.
Cw: sexual assault, questionable consent One of the things that really struck me about this story is how concerned both characters are with consent. The entire premise--a starving incubus who needs sex to survive--screams of questionable consent, but the author handles it really well. The book could have used some expanding on both characters' pasts and the reasons for their emotions, but overall, it was a nice quick read that kept me entertained and invested from beginning to end. Really glad I picked it up.
A fun story that explores the same theme this author seems to love writing about - a character who doesn't think anyone can actually want him due to some kind of inadvertent coercion on his part. In this case, due to Ryan being an incubus, but the author basically wrote a variation of the same story, or at least the same theme, in Unicorn Unashamed and The Werewolf's Brash Bear. Still, a quick and easy read with some sweetness. This one should probably come with a trigger warning for the attempted date rape, but even so, I personally consider it a very low angst book.

This one was a cute sweet slow burn story. Ryan struggles so hard with being an incubus. He is so worried that his powers takes away people’s consent. Chris is such a sweetheart. He really does start out just wanting to help Ryan. He sees him struggling and wants to ease his burdens. I loved how they started out as friendly people who became more. It ends with a happily for now, in a good place. Enough that it does make me want to read the next one but not where I feel like I HAVE to get the next one. Defintely recommend.
The Incubus's First Real Meal is the first book in the Craving More series by Riley Rivers. It is a quick but incredibly sweet read.i absolutely adore Ryan and Chris. They are great characters and I love them together. The story was fun. Great start to a series, I definitely will need to read more.
I received an advanced reader's copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review and recommendation.
Pretty good read all in all. Some places where a bit of extra proofreading would be useful -- I found a couple of sentences that didn't quite make sense until I realized there were words that didn't belong (probably not cleaned up from an earlier draft?) and of course the big question about Ryan's past that didn't really get answered keep it from being 5 stars. However it's the first book in the series so I'm optimistic.
I thought this was going to be a smexy popcorn read, and in reality it’s a novella about unpacking past trauma and learning that we don’t invite abuse. On one hand, I would like some queer joy. On the other, this got me emotional. We stan a golden retriever himbo who places consent front and center.
The communication would have bugged me if it dragged on, but it worked for me in novella form. I’m curious about book 2, which I will almost certainly read.
I would say that this was a slow burn romance and considering Ryan is an incubus that might sound weird but he has so much misinformation to overcome. Chris was such a sweetheart and exactly what poor Ryan needed. I'm really hoping that there's more Ryan and Chris to come.
*I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book*
I enjoyed this story but felt a few questions were left unaswered. I never did understand WHY Ryan feels as he does about being an Incubus and that bugged me for the entire story since it's a pretty big part of why he won't feed... ...but the overarching storyline was sweet and Chris was the perfect foil for Ryan.
A cute little story of an incubus who is so against compelling people against their consent that he tries to exist of residual sexual energy. A temporary bouncer/witch realizes something is wrong and finally convinces him that he's not being compelled and that it's not how his magic works. There is also a persistent suitor to deal with. So cute and light easy read.
OMG.... this was one of the quickest, cutest reads ever!! I was in love with the characters & the storyline was great. I loved the twist of mystery included in the book!! I can’t wait to read more from this author!!
Series starter, Rivers presents a modern day paranormal short which resolves with communication and education. The vicarious aspects of feeding versus the physical heat of hot mating ...
These books are just sweet, perfectly quick reads. I just snag one and binge it in one happy sitting. They're like cozy mystery meets paranormal with just the right amount of spice.
Quick read. Sweet characters with low heat sex scenes. I spent too much time being confused about the magic and supernatural elements not explained. Misinformation, sweet, paranormal, mm
I received this book as an ARC and this is my honest review. Personally, I really enjoyed this book. It was low angst between the MCs. Both characters were extremely likable; the self control exhibited by Ryan, even though he was an incubus, was refreshing, and Chris had a good heart (plus he has my name :-P). The world building was good as it revolved around our MCs. I was happy with how things turned out at the end and look forward to the next book in the series, where a leftover question or two may be answered. Definitely worth the read
