New favorite! Whoa!
Such a refreshing read. Charlie is a woman with confidence; she knows what she's good at without being foul-mouthed or obnoxiously cocky. She trusts herself, her skills and instincts. She shows us with actions how badass she is, not empty words that means nothing when sh*t actually hits the fan. She acts her profession; calm when needed, furious when needed. Speaking of her profession, I love it! Sorry RH authors but it's nice to see a woman with a profession other than artist and waitress. (I don't mean to talk down on women with those jobs, it's just that after reading X amount of books where the women have the same jobs... the pattern becomes a bit repetitive, if you know what I mean.)
The absence of sexism was also a refreshing wind I didn't know I needed. It's just kinda always been there in RH books, usually because of the setting (many main characters tend to be waitresses or been abused in the past) or because there tend to be a lot of guys (good and bad) because of it's genre so there always has to be at least one sexist a**hole, right? Nope! You can do without all the bullsh*t and it's so nice!
Finally, there's just so much going on in this book. I don't want to spoil anything so let's just say I was hooked from the first page to the last. If you're a fan of RH, this one is a must-read. Really looking forward to the second book!

What a start to a series. Loving the plot, the twists and turns of the secret society... great and interesting characters that I can’t wait to read more about... really enjoyable and was hooked instantly...

I was really hoping to like this. I enjoy crime and military themes, but this didn't work for me. I didn't connect with any of the characters. They all felt a bit bland. It seemed like the fmc was be portrayed as unflappable, logical and in control of herself at the beginning, but her emotional responses didn't follow. She was rude to Wyatt, never apologized, and her enotional conflict with Reed at the end was unreasonable. It was weird that she felt ethos to be untrustworthy, but she continued with the rites. Idk, she almost seemed to act like she was forced into it.

Potential reader:
Stop deliberating. This book is 100% worth the read. Just be careful of picking it up when you don't have time to sit through it. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go finish stuff that was supposed to be done yesterday.

Devo cominciare questa recensione parlando di quello che non è The Rites.
Non è un Urban Fantasy, non lo è stato per tutto il tempo tranne che per le ultime 2 pagine dove viene introdotta una vaga componente fantastica o fantascientifica (si parla di portali e una super tecnologia).
Insomma, se cercate poteri alla X-Men o vampiri e licantropi questo non è il vostro libro.
Non è Smut, chiunque abbia dato questa classificazione, evidentemente non ha mai letto libri di questo genere o sono almeno 15 anni che non ne legge uno.
Non solo ha un livello di spicy nella media, ma io direi addirittura un pò al di sotto.
Ci sono solo 2 scene che mostrano un rapporto sessuale della protagonista con 1 degli MMC, esplicita, ma non così tanto, e un breve flash all'inizio del libro di Reed e Ramsey che hanno un rapporto orale.
Non capisco davvero perché porre l'accento sulla componente erotica del libro quando non è per niente predominante, ma anzi marginale.
Passando agli MMC, devo dire che non mi entusiasmano, alcuni non mi dicono niente, altri mi dicono un pò troppo.
Penso che in questo libro siano stati, chi più chi meno, tutti introdotti.
-Gavin è il primo con cui la protagonista avrà una relazione sentimentale e assumerà la non invidiabile posizione del cornuto, quello che deve farsi andare bene che la sua ragazza vada a letto con chiunque la attragga perché " l'importante è che tu sia felice ".
-??? il secondo MMC con cui la protagonista va a letto in questo libro, non dirò chi è perché penso che la scrittrice volesse fare una specie di colpo di scena introducendolo, io avevo capito quello che stava succedendo, ma se qualcuno non dovesse intuirlo, allora immagino sarà una sorpresa.
-Wyatt è quello meno introdotto, al momento funge per la protagonista solo come valvola di sfogo, e non in maniera sessuale, spero tanto che prima o poi Charlie si scusi con lui.
-Reed e Ramsey li metto insieme perché sono una coppia affiatata e innamorata. All'inizio speravo che avrebbero fatto parte dell'harem, man mano che leggevo però mi sono convinta che no, non ne avrebbero fatto parte e che sarebbero stati per Charlie quasi delle figure genitoriali, tanto che nella mia mente mi immagino Reed con una lunga vestaglia di velluto color malva e le pantofole in pelo, e seppure non si sia mai combinato così non riesco a non raffigurarmelo così.
Quando verso la fine del libro hanno cercato di far capire a Charlie ( che non ha capito ) che non avrebbero avuto problemi ad inserirla nelle loro dinamiche sessuali ma anzi speravano che lo facesse, ho dovuto un attimo resettare il cervello e capire se mi andava bene quello che inevitabilmente succederà... non mi sono ancora data una risposta.
In generale comunque il libro è stato piacevole e mi ha abbastanza incuriosita, leggerò il seguito.

Just enough twists and turns
Not only is Charlie tapped to be in a known, but elite, government organization, she is then asked to join a secret society, the Ethos Society.
There were some surprises within the story that were nice add-ins, and overall a very enjoyable read. Highly recommend!

This story was phenomenal!!! I'll admit I was wondering how this was a rh story till I got towards end of book. HOT!!! Was not expecting that. Storyline was really good. Loved all the characters. Authors did great job writing this story. Kept my attention right in the beginning. Looking forward to book 2.

Crazy good mindflip of a book! Definitely something different than the typical tropes. Love the mysteries and curveballs thrown - felt surprise, betrayal and the excitement of something completely different. Totally will be reading book 2!

Amazing read
Wow, this book definitely had me hook, line and sinker.
I want to spill all the beans, but it's not easy to do so without spoiling an important part of this book, but I was soooo pleasantly surprised with certain twists and revelations in this book that I will undoubtedly continue this series. The author is entirely new to me and I have no regrets, her writing style speaks to me, the characters were all pretty damn great if you ask me and I loved being introduced to the idea of the institution they're working/training for.
As someone who is very much intrigued by non verbal communication, I adored the field of specialization the FMC works in. I can tell that the author pays attention to details in describing all these things, lifting the book to a higher level. Very well done indeed!

What I liked the most about this book was how the author did research on how a trained government official would react and dissect difficult situations. This book wasn't just thrown together like so many nowadays. She took her time explaining the situation and how her characters react in them. I loved that!
I really like Charlie, the FMC. She's smart, strong willed but kind. She truly cares for those she's come to love and will even make certain sacrifices for them.
The sexy scenes are passionate without being crass. I thought there was a good amount of sexy times without it seeming gratuitous.
The last test, or Rite, is emotionally brutal. I really felt Charlie's pain and conflicting emotions. The author does an outstanding job of describing all the emotions going through the main character.
It ends properly, with enough mystery to get you saying, "hmm! What's next?" But it's not really considered a cliffhanger, so don't say it is! Lol. I hate that; people claiming it's a cliffhanger when it's not a TRUE one. 🤦♀️
Anyway, REALLY well done and I look forward to future books on Charlie and her growing harem...😜

Wow! This was really interesting. I liked the mystery and suspense of this book, it really kept me on my toes. I liked the interesting take on secret organizations. The FMC was a great character. She was super intelligent, observant, kind, and curious. She had a great mind and was mature. This book was a slow burning RH. The harem wasn’t made until the end basically.
Harem: Gage and Gavin (identical twins)
Potential harem males: Reed, Ramsey, and Wyatt
Sexiness: 3.5 out 5. There is MM
There is also multiple POVs. But the majority will be seen through the FMC.

I really loved this book. The premise was unique, the pacing was perfect and the characters were likeable. I wasn't ready for the book to end. The only negative other than a few typos is that I didn't always understand the heroine's emotions, most notably, the depth of her anger after a particular occurence in the book. This left me feeling like I missed something in terms of characterization. This in no way diminished my enjoyment, however. I can't believe this was written by a new author because it in no way felt amateurish to me. I can't wait for the next book to see how things play out!

In “The Rights: Ethos Society Part One,” author Chloe Gunter gives us a world that on the surface seems completely normal…until it isn’t. Told in first person narrative, we follow the main female character in learning what exactly is behind the world of GRAVITAS, that secret government agency that is only whispered about. Charlie Dewitt is a badass female who can hold her own in a male dominated world, which is always a bonus to read. She doesn’t need a man to get by…but it sure doesn’t hurt to have one, or in this case a harem, in her corner.
*Gunter’s characters are three-dimensional with backstories of their own that I can’t wait to learn about. Rather than having bland, boring run of the mill badasses, she has clearly defined each character through their mannerisms, reactions, and thoughts. Charlie has a skillset that sets her apart and often on the outside looking in. Gunter paired her with the perfect guys to help her navigate this new world she is finding herself in. From the twins *hell yes!* Gavin and Gage, the Assistant Director Ridley (Who I seriously need way more of!), and the established couple Reed and Ramsey. It is going to be so fun to see who this strong capable female character ends up with!
*There are moments of humor throughout that had me snickering. My favorite was:
“You’re officially on my list.”
“And what list would that be, my dear profiler?” Oh yeah, he had me pegged. It must have been the reading I gave him on the field. Internally cursing myself, I made a personal vow to not give away my skills so freely again.
“One, The Trash Panda List. And two, I’m not your dear, darling.”
“So you wont be my dear, but I can be our darling?” I nodded my head, enjoying the banter. “Well, at least you find me cute and dangerous.” His smile brightened, making his cheekbones more defined.
“Yep, just like a trash panda. You think they’re all cuddly like some cartoon racoon, until they gouge your eyes out. I’m definitely not signed up for that.”
***I LOVE TRASH PANDAS and seriously, how accurate was this? Pretty sure we all have had a Trash Panda List at some point in time.
*The plot for the book kept me turning the page. There was no unnecessary information that was info dropped. It was woven seamlessly into the narrative and kept the book flowing. Rather than the book being all about the love-interests, it held my attention with the world that Gunter built. There was a nice mix of both and I can’t wait to read the next installment to find out more of the world that Charlie finds herself in.
*Overall, I really enjoyed reading The Rites: Ethos Society Part One. Chloe Gunter has done a wonderful job starting off this new series and it was an attention grabber, especially if you like a bit of intrigue, mystery, and of course some hot RH thrown in just to keep things fresh. Learning more about GRAVITAS and the world that Chloe has now found herself in is going to be an interesting ride.
I won an ARC of this book and am offering my fair and honest opinion of this book. Make sure you grab it! It is seriously a good read!

Whoa!!!
I had no idea what to expect with this book but what I got was awesome!!! I loved the whole secret society idea because those kind of things fascinate me. Everything in this book was well thought out, detailed, and the author did a phenomenal job with executing her ideas. The storyline flowed incredibly well and never felt rushed or incomplete.
I really liked Charlie as a female character except in the end when she found out about Whistler. I kind of understand why she was upset but at the same time, she made the choice to continue with the Ethos initiation and the 3 Rites. She may have been sponsored and nominated but she made the choice to see it through but she is blaming Whistler for getting her involved as if everything is his fault and I just don’t see that being fair to him. Besides that episode, I really liked her mannerisms, personality, and her intellect.
I can truly say I love all the men she has encountered and hope she gets them all! Reed is her roommate and it is obvious from her first meeting with him that he likes men. Specifically one man named Ramsey. I love the relationship she develops with Reed and Ramsey and I hope that it can evolve into something more romantic and less platonic as the series continues. Wyatt, the older and sexy assistant director for GRAVITAS. It is obvious that there is an attraction and connection between the 2 of them but it hasn’t been voiced quite yet.... soon please??? Then there is Gavin and Gage. I love their contrasting personalities and how they interact with Charlie...it’s swoon worthy I promise!
This book was advertised as a RH but we didn’t really start to see that developing until closer to the end of the book which was fine with me. I liked how the author has given the reader enough time to really get to know all the potential men in Charlie’s life before diving right in with 5 men and 1 woman concept. It’s a different approach that is refreshing to read. And I say “potential men” but in reality they are the men I want her to be with, doesn’t necessarily mean that they all will be involved romantically with Charlie.
This is an amazing start to a new series that I absolutely cannot wait to read more of!!! I am already hung over and now I have to wait until the fall for book 2 😕

This was an exceptionally good book, full of suspense and unexpected twists. This is the first time I was reading this author so I was not sure what to expect, but after this book, I will expect so much.
The author's writing is fantastic, the idea is original and well thought out, and the plot is brilliantly executed. It feels at first as a really good, intriguing suspense novel of a recruit joining a secret organisation, but there are hints of something more throughout the book. And although it is obvious there is something much more at play here, the surprise was great when it was finally revealed.
The main character is Charlotte DeWitt, an FBI profiler, who one day leaves home to go to work and ends up on a thrilling adventure of a lifetime. This adventure changes her in so many ways, and opens up a new world she never knew existed. This part of the journey is just the beginning and there is so much ore to come. I have no idea what, and I can't wait to find out.
During her stay in Gravitas, she meets some amazing people, first of all her roommate Reed and his boyfriend Ramsey, then Gavin, and many more. Charlotte is quite exceptional, but the other's are too, because Gravitas is not a place for average people, it scouts for and recruits only the best in a particular field or military, crime fighting, languages and culture, psychology, experts in their profession, so the collection of interesting and capable people in this book is impressive.
All the characters are well developed, interesting, intriguing, highly intelligent, and highly skilled. They all believe in a greater good and are do not shy from using questionable methods to achieve it. I really like this part, there is no hesitation, the characters do what needs to be done.
There is a lot of chemistry between and among the characters. The author managed to convey all kinds of interesting feelings, there is romance, friendship, betrayal, hurt, love, so much love and loyalty.
The ending itself was not a surprise but it did contain some very unexpected players. It is an open ending, but a very logical one, because it is obvious that a new chapter in Charlotte's life starts right there. Overall, this was a fantastic book that I enjoyed immensely, and I am so glad I found this author. I cannot wait to see what happens next.

Wow, this was a refreshing read. First off, you’re not really expecting the way RH is integrated into the story line, and it’s not overkill in the amount of romance that’s going on as it is done in a very tasteful way. You get just enough, and are even left wanting some more in a scene or two. The story is full of twists and excitement, and is refreshing that the cliché you’re predicting to be there are not.
Then there comes the ending and you’re like BOOM what the heck, I did not see this at all and I LOVE IT.
This is definitely one book that I would recommend to anyone who needs a twist on the techno-thriller genre. You will be left wanting more after reading this book as there are questions that arise along the way, and some do get answered, while others pave the way for a sequel that you’ll be craving after the book ends.

The characters are well developed, and you’ll find yourself having different attachments to the various players. One morning Charlie is interrupted from her daily routine in the FBI and is asked to join an elite group, which she accepts without a second thought. Charlie is excellent at reading people. It’s what she was born to do and this elite group proves that it plans to put her skills to the test. She begins to train and better herself, while also meeting and making new friends. Everything is going so well that she can’t seem to help waiting for the other shoe to drop. Just when she is getting in to the swing of things she starts receiving cryptic messages that make her paranoid. When she arrives at the time, place and location indicated in the messages she finds herself with an offer from a secret society that she simply can’t turn down. To become a member of the society, led by a sponsor she doesn’t know, Charlie must complete three trials known as rites that test her attention to detail, willingness to work with a team and her tenet of trust. Who is her sponsor? Will she complete the trials? And if she does what does that mean for her?
This book had so many twists and turns that kept me on edge the whole time. Just when I thought things were straightening out another plot twist was thrown in and I loved it. Charlie is a complete badass and I’m jealous of her confidence. I’m curious to see which of the guys in this book end up as part of her harem. I need the next book now!

There is just so much awesome in this book. This is the first book from this author that I have read and I cannot say enough good things! The mystery, suspense and drama along with the romance , with twists and surprises- mix in a secret society and bam! I was hooked! Oh so good! I was riveted from the very beginning. Charlie is recruited not once, but twice and her life just keeps getting more interesting and dangerous. I really like Charlie. She is smart and quirky, she thinks thing through, she’s very observant ( that’s part of her job!) she isn’t brash and she’s always thinking of others, she’s tested in so many ways physically and emotionally and I think the author did a fantastic job in putting just the right amount of detail throughout to story so that we really felt we knew Charlie. I think if there was any less detail, we couldn’t truly appreciate just how unique of a character Charlie is.
All of the characters in this book are really well developed. I think the book in general was really well written with the style and pace being perfect for telling this story. I am really curious to see how the relationships continue to develop. This story really focuses of trust and growth. This was a refreshing, captivating read that repeatedly surprised me with its twists and turns. I really enjoyed this read and I am excited to read the next installment!

As a warning, anything magical didn't obviously show up until the last chapter. The rest was pretty typical government agency academy + initiation shenanigans, and I felt everything was narrated pretty dryly.
The reverse harem setup wasn't super obvious, and any romance was pretty shallow and insta-love and not very satisfying. The housing and interactions tbh didn't make sense at all - why would a new FMC be housed with an instructor or interact so much with an Assistant Director. Characters were introduced very rapidly, and it was hard to keep everyone straight by the end. The secret society was very much over-the-top, and I didn't understand why there wasn't more resistance or skepticism going through the involuntary rites. In fact, the whole invitation to the secret government agency was accepted a little too easily as well IMO. The assigned missions for the new members were out of the blue and not particularly logical. Overall, everyone's morals seemed debatable, and I can't say I liked any of the MCs much.
I'm not interested in the characters or world enough to continue with the series.

Personally, I just couldn't.
I don't want to be that person comes on here yelling and nit-picking every factually inaccurate part of a book in an effort to make themselves feel more important. So I'm not going to be. I'm just going to say that I really struggle to read books where psychology plays a large role. It just really distracts me from the plot and prevents me from connecting with and loving the story.
I will confess: My fiance and I love Criminal Minds (which this book sort of reminds me of) and we love to point out and explain the inaccuracies to each other since his background is in law enforcement and mine is psychology. You can imagine we're real fun to watch it with...
Anywho, I did really enjoy how confident and capable the h was in this book. If I didn't have my own issues, I could definitely see myself rating this higher and continuing with the series.

I need to give a HUGE shoutout to Chloe Gunter for killing it with this book!!
I have such a hard time with finding books that keep my utmost attention. I tend to read books in a flash and then two days later I’ve already almost forgotten all of the finer details from reading so fast.
HOWEVER, as much as I couldn’t put this book down (and flew right through it), I am now two days and 2 books later with The Rites STILL playing through my mind.
Our FMC was so fantastic. She was strong, smart, and a total badass! She is the type of woman I dream to be like.
Plus she has the HOTTEST men in her life! Leave it up to Chloe for making me jealous of a fictional character.
Third, The flow and writing style of this book was exceptional. She threw in plot twists with such ease and I didn’t see a single one coming.

Mystery. Intrigue. Deception.
I absolutely LOVED this book. I'm not normally taken by mystery novels, but this one had so many twist and turns that never led to an obvious answer.
Focusing it's attentions around Charlie being inducted into a secret society, we follow along as she's put to the ultimate test of physical and mental extremes. I absolutely love all the little nuances that Charlie's personality & background picks up on, that a normal person wouldn't. This book is very detailed, and it needs to be to be able to portray Charlie's personality properly.
This story is all about the survival of the fittest, and how even knowing how to read other people you still can't judge a person by their outward mannerisms. Friendships may have been forged in The Rites (The Ethos Society #1), but will they be lost?

Amazing job, Chloe! You don’t want to pass this book up. I received this as an ARC copy and basically read it all in one sitting. It’s THAT good.

This is no simple secret society there are secrets and mysteries everywhere and neither Charlie nor myself was prepared for them all. The action in this story starts in the first paragraph and it doesn't let up closely followed by the intrigue. Every answer that was revealed only raised more questions and Charlie despite being skilled is now in a game where the stakes have never been higher. The men Charlie gathers in her journey aid but with everyone hiding secrets she questions whether she can trust them, despite her skills. Thoroughly thrilled to read this again and excited for the next book in the series ... which I desperately hope won't be long as I need answers!

At a loss for words
This book was amazeballs! I read it in 1 sitting because I could not put it down! The FMC is kickass - smart as all get out, ballsy, and really you just want to be her. The men, well there's only 2 added in this book and I won't get into it because I don't want to give away that unseen twist. Then there's her 2 besties that I really hope get added to her men because I freaking love Reed so much! Oh and I'm hoping the deputy director is also in the mix because I am beyond curious about him. The storyline is great - there's mystery and betrayal that sucks you in plus that ending....I mean that's just cruel...worth it though!

Surprise!
This was a surprising book. I loved the intruige and the fact that it kept you guessing till the last page.
It was well paced despite it being months around the heroines life.
The characters were great, their personalities were well developed with room to grow, especially with the surprise at the end.
I love that the heroine has a take no crap attitude and a drive to be better.
I especially appreciated that there wasn't a huge story line of denial but plenty of angst to keep drama lovers happy. All in all it was a great book.

Fantastic solo debut
This book was a fantastic solo debut for Gunter, and she really impressed me with her world building/storytelling, character development, and obvious research & work she put into her story. She gives us a strong and capable FMC confident in her abilities but that recognizes her own weaknesses. I enjoyed watching/reading the relationships development and definitely look forward to more from all parties. And she balances the killer steam with plot. Thoroughly enjoyed and will absolutely continue the series
