Two wizards, Jaldis and Rhion, had dared the dread Dark Well to answer the desperate call of a world without magic. Jaldis had not survived the dreadful Void. Now Rhion was alone in a world he could not imagine - the world of Germany in 1940. The four would-be wizards of the Occult Bureau welcomed him to their home in Schloss Torweg. They wanted his help desperately. But they would not heed his advice against calling up of dark magic. They needed magic to overcome the enemies they claimed were trying to conquer their fatherland. To that high mission, nothing could be neglected, however dark and ugly. They lied to him, claiming the Dark Well had been destroyed, removing his only hope of returning to Tally and his two sons. And soon he realized he was no more than a useful prisoner. But he knew the Dark Well still existed. And somehow, despite whatever they did to him, he must find a way back across the Void!

aka Barbara Hamilton

Ranging from fantasy to historical fiction, Barbara Hambly has a masterful way of spinning a story. Her twisty plots involve memorable characters, lavish descriptions, scads of novel words, and interesting devices. Her work spans the Star Wars universe, antebellum New Orleans, and various fantasy worlds, sometimes linked with our own.

"I always wanted to be a writer but everyone kept telling me it was impossible to break into the field or make money. I've proven them wrong on both counts."
-Barbara Hambly

I think I liked the first book, which was fantasy-adventure, better than I liked the World War Two plus magic hijinks of the second book. But I really, really like Rhion--just an average wizard guy trying to make his way.

I would read the implied next book where Rhion and Tally and the remaining mages struggle against the cult of Agon. I would totally read it. Hint, hint.

A combination of 2 books that would have done well with some serious editing. The story was OK if based too much on the holocaust and the inquisition. It consists of two adventures in alternative universes, our world and the mirror version where magic exists. Both suffer from intolerance and persecution by lies of minorities (wizard = jews.)
