This was one of the best things I have ever done! I was raised in the church, but never read the Bible through from beginning to end. This has impacted me in so many ways! Bible stories I heard in Sunday School and Bible verses taught throughout my life have come alive for me. Learning more about forgiveness and mercy in the midst of stories of heartache, betrayal, brokenness and sin has led to a deeper understanding of God's overwhelming love for us.
It’s divided into sections to help the reader read it in one year. Each section is preceded by a brief overview, areas of application and insight into what is about to be read.
I will specify that I’m giving this edition of the Bible one star. The actual religious text is great, historic, culturally relevant, etc, but while I liked the books and chapters being broken up by day and spread over the course of one year in this edition, I very much disliked the daily homophobic devotionals that encouraged me to call up my city council and ask how many incidences of homosexuality have occurred in my hometown. That is not okay.
This was the last Bible my mom read through before she passed away in 2024. I chose to read through her copy this year. It was so special. I discoverd little notes that she had written and verse she had underlined and commented on. It was like she was reading it with me.
NIV Bible with daily explanations of your reading. The introductions for each book of the Bible were the best I gave seen so far. Highly, highly, highly recommended.
This particular book divides the Bible into sections so that you can read it within a year. It also offers an overview of what the days section will contain, including a witty quote that goes along with the daily reading. Another interesting feature is that it takes that section & compares it with current times & offers a challenge to apply what you've read to your daily life. Historical facts are also presented.
I'm not trying to read it within a year, just reading it as I can. I actually began in 2008 & then allowed other things to take higher priority than reading the Word. I spend an hour on each section that I read (that's just ME), taking my time to look up definitions & trying to get my head around what I've just read. I also spend that time in prayer, seeking what the Lord would say to me through it. Many times I would get hung up on just one verse that would speak volumes to me, so I'd end up spending all my time in prayer over it. I thought I'd NEVER get out of Proverbs- but I was good with that :)
When I'm done reading this I will begin reading the Amplified version in my new Bible, from front to back :)
