The Women Who Ruled India: Leaders. Warriors. Icons.

Rate this book
‘People say that I am a quarrelsome woman...’
TARABAI, MARATHA QUEEN (1675–1761)

The history of India, more often than not, is a history of the men who were in charge. Largely forgotten are the women who, even centuries earlier, shaped the fates of entire kingdoms.
In The Women Who Ruled India, writer and researcher Archana Garodia Gupta revives 20 such powerful figures from the archives, offering us a glimpse of their fascinating lives. Among them are Begum Samru, a courtesan who went on to become the head of a mercenary army and the ruler of Sardhana; Didda of Kashmir, known for her keen political instinct and a ruthlessness that spared no one; Rani Abbakka of Ullal, the fearless queen who took on Portuguese colonizers in their heyday; and Rani Mangammal of Madurai, the famed administrator who built alliances at a time when going to war was the order of the day.
These women and others like them built roads, instituted laws and were generous patrons of the arts and sciences. Their stories of valour and diplomacy, leadership and wit continue to inspire today. Peppered with anecdotes that showcase little-known facets of their personalities, the accounts in this book celebrate heroic rulers who – ‘quarrelsome’ though they might have been – were iconoclasts: unafraid to forge new paths.

This book is a compilation of the stories of 20 fierce women who ruled India at some point of time and was able to make the name in history. The throne of the kingdom always goes to the son but many a time, women have to take the reign of the kingdom.

Many of the women were ahead of time and dared to break the rule, like the Begums of Bhopal who refused to follow the purdah system and managed to rule Bhopal for the 100 years. They built roads and provided better sanitation to the people. Shah Jahan Begum was a visionary lady and lived with modesty.

Begum Sumru, who was nautch girl and got married to Walter Reinhardt Sombre, even though having no royal background and training she managed to rule Sardhana with her political tactics.

There were also some women leaders who fought with the British and tried to evade their influence. The most famous among these was Queen of Jhansi, Laxmibai. She is an epitome of valor, which is still remembered by the people. The other woman leader was Velu Nachiyar, who ruled the kingdom of Sivaganga, Tamil Nadu. She is the first queen to fight against the British. The Attingal Ranis, Umayamma also fought against the British control in India.

As we have seen in the movie, ‘Padmavat’ Rani Padmavati chooses Jauhar and this is very hard to think in today’s world. However, On many occasion queens performed Jauhar but there is an exception as few queens decide not to follow Jauhar but to stand by their Kingdom and fight till the last breath, like queen mother Jawahirbai.

Each and every story of women leader given in the book fascinating to read and will make one think about the time when these brave women broke the stereotype and fight for the motherland.

Writing style:

As this is a non-fiction, history-based book hence the book is full of information which is not for all the readers. However, the authoress has put her effort to describe the thing easily.

My perception:

I loved this book; each and every women leader mentioned in the book has admirable tactics, knowledge with bravery. They were much ahead of their time and successfully protected their kingdom when there was need. I was totally unaware about many of the women leader mentioned in the book and I am really glad that I got to know them now. This book reflects hard work and tedious research of the authoress. However, I felt that the pictures were necessary in the book, which would have helped and attract readers more. The authoress has also given suggestion of good books for further reading. Overall, this was an enjoyable read.

Do give it a read if you want to know the brave women leaders of the past. A highly motivating and informative read!

India's fascinating history had witnessed many great emperors and kings expanding the length and breadth of their empire. They contributed immensely with their benevolent rule or plundered the land with their tyrannical rule. But this book made me realize about those talented and fearless queens and princesses who defeated all the odds and ruled their kingdom with iron hands.

Archana Garodia selected 20 such women rulers who left their mark on the history through their sheer fighting skills, diplomacy, courage, leadership qualities, welfare measures. And some are remembered even today.

The short biography of The Begums of Bhopal, Lakshmibai of Jhansi, Kittur Chennamma, Begum Samru, Velu Nachiyar and Ahilya Bai Holkar were interesting to read as the author has enough material to build their stories which was not the case for most of the other queens.

Information about most of the queens were scant and sparse. Often it happened that the author has to heavily depend upon the backstories, political scenario before and during the time of queen to compensate the lack of information about the queen.

Overall I would say the book could catch the fancy of history non fiction book lovers. Though it doesn't provide any analysis or deep insight about their rule.

Title: The Women who ruled India
Author: Archana Garodia Gupta
Publisher: Hachette India
Genre: Historical
Format: Paperback
Language: English
No. of pages: 299

The Women who Ruled India was a really inspiring read. I personally think that this is a great book to gift to the young women as well as men, in our lives. Reading this book at an impressionable age with be a great benefit.
The women here are brave and just, and that is a great lesson. It teaches us to understand that being brave and courageous does not necessarily mean that we do not fear anything, rather we overcome the fear. This book also shows so many instances when these wonderful, beautiful women always put their people and their subjects above their own lives. Being so selfless is another quality that is worth mentioning.
The manner that this book is written in – the inclusion of the history first as an introduction, the woman’s general life span history and a short story or instance at the end. This makes sure that you are not bored as you move through the amazing stories of such inspiring women.
The language used is standard without being too complex so I think that it will be understandable for pretty much everyone.

I am rating this book a solid 4/5 for its amazing inspiring factor.

Each of the 20 stories narrated herein detail the life and times of that era, sourced from the dusty pages of history. They highlight the bravery, sagacity, ruthlessness or sacrifice of these women. These stories have one thing in common, that these women were formidable rulers who refused to be cowed down. It is not only a chronological detailing of their lives but is inspirational in nature and will highlight the specifics that made them an icon. The language used is lucid and easy vernacular, which makes it a well-paced read. The transitions from one story to another are smoothly dealt with that makes it practically un-put-down-able.

Great account of women rulers of India since a time period when women didn't even have the right to even breathe freely. Although not an exhaustive list, it includes stories of the struggle of many women rulers unknown to me. The work is very well structured as it follows a timeline and sequentially walks the readers through Indian history of invasions, conquests and colonization.

A very interesting read about women who either rules or played significant roles in various Indian kingdoms.
This has stories about Tarabai of the Maratha empire, Ahilyabai of the Holkar dynasty, and of many other prominent women who ruled India.
The book is written in simple language and has well-researched content. The style of writing is not like a story, may feel a bit boring at places. This is a good read in general and a must-read for history buffs.

On the back cover of this book, there has a quote from Maratha Queen Tarabai says, “People say that I am a quarrelsome woman"... I literally loved that punch line. That quote defines the book perfectly. Because the era Author has described was all about Man’s ruling land, and every single Queen had to fight until their last breath to achieve the right they deserve as a Ruler of this country. Those kings were all in charge for their own land but those forgotten women who really helped to give a proper shape to those kingdoms but history rarely repeats their name. Those fearless warriors, Queens, Heroines who fought with the outsiders like Mughals, British, Afghans with dignity but still most of themselves are really unknown to us. If so-called historians really take a look at those incidents or the war, those Queens won, I hope Indians will be more knowledgeable about their country...From 2018-2019, I have read so many beautiful books based on Historical events or Characters. One of them was Rebel Sultans by Manu.S. Pillai, now this one by Archana Garodia Gupta has enlisted in my favorite Historical Novels. I just loved that small information about those places which was ruled by those particular Queens. Writing skill is an amazing, lucid flow, beautifully narrated with the proper phrase. Thanks a lot Hachette India for sending me this beautiful book.

We have only known a handful of Indian rulers like Rani Lakshmi Bai, Razia Sultan, Tara Bai, but this book 'The Women Who Ruled India' Archana Garodia Gupta, tell us about 20 women rulers of India, who either ruled willingly or the mantle of leadership was thrust upon them. Regardless they proved no less than a King of that time and Rose and shone like Sun in their people's heart.

Archana Garodia Gupta who is a delightful storyteller. Weaves the stories of 20 women who dared to change the course of history.

Archana unfolds the layers of history for us and brings forth the stories of these women Warriors, dating from 500 BCE to the recent times of war of Independence.

Each story in the book 'The Women who ruled India' inspire us, women, to be a warrior and never lose hope no matter the hardships and the struggle we face.

The author begins the chapter with a quote which describes the sheer beauty of those Warriors and their bravery.

What I really loved about these short stories is how each tale is full of treasures. Moreover, the author has put in every detail of that particular era and dynasty and yet managed to also tell us about the leadership qualities these women ruler possessed.

Archana's narration is very lyrical, lulling her readers into these stories with the smoothness of the flowing river and enthralling her readers with easy vernacular.

And the time spanned through the various dynasties is smoothly connected and amazingly narrated. Not once did these stories lose their pace.

I loved almost all its stories but among them, I really loved reading about: Raziya Sultan, The heroines of Chittor, The Rani Abbakkas of Ullal and many such amazing stories.

Do I recommend this book?
Trust me, when I say this book is a worthy read. History genre lovers are going to fall in love with this book.

This book has earned 5 stars its beautiful narration and lyrical prose and the vast amount of treasure it contains.

These women were brave, fierce and possessed great leadership qualities. They were great rulers of their times and continue to inspire future generations as well. Their stories of valour and diplomacy, leadership and wit make this book a very informative read.

The book features the stories of twenty powerful figures from the archives, offering us a glimpse of their fascinating lives. Each one of them ruled India during different time periods. It is a matter of great pride that such brave and powerful women are a part of India's rich history. From the Bhaumakara Queens, Didda of Kashmir, Raziya Sultan to Nur Jahan, and Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi, the women rulers who were often overshadowed by their male counterparts in the patriarchal representation of history; their true accounts are presented in this book. Authoress Archana Garodia Gupta in her book describes about 20 warrior queens throughout Indian History, offering us a glimpse of their fascinating lives, captivating stories, each one of them ruled India at different time period.

Each chapter starts with a quote which describes the bravery of these women as an introduction.
This book conjures vivid images of Rani Ababakas, Attingal queens of Travancore, Begums of Bhopal, Queen didda and also the warrior queens which we know such as Rani Lakshmibai, Tarabai, Razia, Nurjahan, Chandbibi etc.

At the end of each chapter one may find an additional interesting fact about that particular person or her kingdom. For eg- Naming of 'Sambar', the South Indian dal is credited to Maratha Chhatrapati Sambhaji !
The best part of the book is the writing and the content material.
The book is a outcome of tedious research and painstakingly efforts to compile stories of different time periods. These tales of heroines intrigues in a fashion that you flip pages and pages. The additional trivia which the authoress provides is interesting. However as 20 queens have been described in just 289 pages the content is less but the writing is in simple flowing language and makes you hooked to the book.

A book which every which every history afficandion and women of our country must posses.
So ladies make little space in your jam-packed book shelves for this book, order it now !

A book you should definitely read!
To be honest, Reading this book was no less than watching any well composed directory based on their life (and who needs that when we have a book).
The story of these fearless and wise personalities will enthrill you, their ways of living, their audacity and valour will definitely astonish you .Their stories continue to inspire us today.
I am glad that this book exists and is as per my expectations, I am not a pro in history and I am researching about the facts which were given in the book. But as obvious I cannot spend my whole time searching about all of them and verifying the facts, so I blindly believed in whatever was given. Honestly I don't have any doubts as the facts which I checked were appropriate and I believe that sincerity and responsibility is there, when I read the Introduction.
Somewhere I felt the need of proper narration and more clarity in stories which is expected when we know nothing about them. So it is a thing which I thought was important but was lacking as the readers are of different levels.
If you are crazy about knowing about them then it is a great book to give you an idea for what to search as unless you know what to search what will you?
The portrayal satisfied me. Not all the time well I guess still good job has been done. Now one thing to remember is that a glimpse to their lives is presented. So don't expect that you'll be given a lot of facts and stories of 20 women in just 289 pages which I guess is not possible unless the pages are big.

This book presents history to the readers in small, consumable pills. Containing 20 chapters, it provides concise accounts of the women who ruled our country. Not having read many books on history, it was difficult to spot what the author must have left out from each of these rulers' detailed historic records, which could be a lot considering the appreciable contributions by these women and the size of this book, a modest 300 pages.
However, the author's narration seems to give the story of each of these women a sense of completion and the book on the whole is quite engaging right until the final page. The author has also added anecdotes after each of the chapters, which are quite interesting.

The Women Who Ruled India by Archana Garodia Gupta was an accidental find and a page turner.

20+ women who had ruled various parts of India as Independent Rulers and Regents.

Warriors who led their troops in wars and also Administrators who led their kingdoms to prosperity.

Except for a few women rulers like Razia Sultana and Jhansi ki Rani and Ahilya Bai Holkar, I could not remember having heard the names of the other women rulers.

How many women administrators (CMs / Leaders of Political Parties) do we have today ? Only one, sad enough.

A must read for everyone.

Informative history on 20 such women in history. Due to the preponderance of dates and events and other rulers and their geographical conquests, the book was not a very absorbing read. And I wonder why no mention of Rani Gaideleu in the Eastern India. But still a decent read for someone who is interested in History.

Not completely a disappointment but not the perfect as expected as well(actually nowhere close).
Quick thoughts first, in order to cover as many possible (or maybe all of them, I hadn't heard or read about more than 4 perhaps) she seems to have dwelled on the surface only. Most of the stories are mere historical accounts of the kingdoms, rather than emphasizing on the woma(e)n ruler (which I guess was the main purpose of the book, as it acclaims).
The writing could use some flow.

Towards the end, the book actually started to seem to justify the title a bit. Some stories were actually well written, the Begums of Bhopal being the last one has the most impression.

Having said that, this books certainly told the untold tales, and that is worth it. The history I have read since childhood, hardly recognised 3 or 4 female rulers. I get reminded of a recent read, "The invisible women", where the author pointed out, how conveniently histories(or for that matter sciences or any other field) forget females when it comes to giving credits or giving examples. This one surely is an attempt to change that.

Very interesting read about not just women rulers, but dynasties that you might not have learned in your textbooks. The book does a good job in presenting the stories as it is, and the narrative does not feel like it is overly venerating the ruling class or jingoistic. At times, chapters about some women rulers seem to be more about the larger dynasty, and felt like a lot of pages were dedicated to detail about the men that preceded/succeeded the women rulers (which might be because of the lack of literature on the specific ruler, but still felt like it did not go along with the theme of the book).

📚My Take: No doubt this was a marvellous & a very fantastic read. The book features 20 women warriors who ruled india, who were brave enough to take the chances & charge of thier entire community. Hachette India, always surprises it's readers with such feminist reads & this is one of them. When you read you feel brave, you feel proud, you well courageous & you feel outstanding. In a society where women is seen as source of pleasures, Archana intricately talks about these amazing furious women who took the world with their bravery & courage. The book proves that, history has already witnessed the strength of women & there is no need to prove it anymore.
.
📚The writing is marvellous, the narration is amazing, as it falls in historical fiction, the author makes sure that she keeps the reader intrigued. The cover is mind blowing. The book is suchaa amazing & a motivational read, I loved it to the core. I wish the book had illustrations though. I highly recommend it to everyone out there.
