Harrietta Lee has a friend who can see the future, and she's just gone missing.
She's not the only one. There are too many disappearances to count, and Harry can't be everywhere at once--which is why she's enlisting the help of a fumbling, fedora-clad detective, a programmer who moonlights as a DJ, and your friendly neighborhood demon, Lilith.
Stephanie Ahn is a debut author and college student who tends to write about young-ish adults just trying to get by in life. Wonder where she got that idea?
After finishing Stephanie Ahn's debut and Book 1 of her Harrietta Lee Series, "Deadline," literally in a blink of an eye (novella length only), that left me wanting more (Harry's ongoing adventures plus a certain demon!), I had to read Book 2 right away! Plus, I was dead curious about Ahn's sophomore writing and storytelling skills. Needless to say, I devoured it at top speed and came out of it totally and completely entertained, satiated, satisfied, and more inspired and thrilled than ever! Ahn is most definitely a talented writer and tale-spinner of the wildest, most daring, uninhibited and imaginative kind in the world of urban fantasy!
"Bloodbath." Yes, that's the word Ahn used to title the 2nd installment of her Harrietta Lee series. And yes, it means what it means, literally and figuratively, and she made no qualms about it, whatsoever, in bringing that title to life in weaving the sequel to Harry's adventures as a disgraced blood witch earning her keep as an "unofficial" P.I. in the streets of New York! Ahn definitely nailed the "sequel" formula perfectly, imo: BIGGER. BETTER. MORE. Much, much more.
This was everything Deadline was and more. Again great writing and story-telling, and more Harry being a beautiful, beautiful moron. I was excited to see that Lilith featured heavily in the story, which I was hoping she might.
In general I really appreciate the way Stephanie writes people. The characters are all compelling, but they also feel really genuine and lived-in a way that doesn't always meet Harry or the readers expectations. It's a gritty, sexy story, and yet also a really empathetic one.
I really enjoyed this! I went into it knowing I was getting lesbian urban fantasy with some spicy BDSM, but it delivered that AND a really well done story.
The cast is beautifully diverse. And the ladies! All competent and powerful and unique. Everyone felt real and believable.
It was well paced out and kept me interested. Once I hit the titular BLOODBATH scene, I couldn’t put the book down. I’ll definitely be reading any more stories that follow in this universe.
Nowhere near as upbeat or lighthearted as the first book, Bloodbath lived up to its name and went to some dark places - darker than I was prepared for. While I still enjoyed Harrietta and her adventures, this book was much more brutal and well, bloody than the first, and it felt like a shift from the first book that I wasn't ready for.
This book. Oof. That was a rollercoaster of... Everything, really.
The suspense, the danger, the amount of times Harry surprised me by not dying. Thankfully not all of those were a big, red, glaring sign saying "PLOT ARMOR" but some of them were.
I liked the ending as well, as I thought this was the latest book in the series. So here Iam about to go find the next book! Can't wait to read more and see what Harry is up to, I hope to see her exploring her magic more, I also would like her to be welcomed back and mentored by Bautista.. These are my wishes but I will read and see. I would've liked to see more of Ahn's world building and character design, it is extremely interesting and fun to think of rhe possibilities when it comes to magic.
For example, the eye sigil Harry used in the clinic. I think that was among my favourite parts if not THE favourite. I would definitely like to see more fun magic.
On to the next book!

The title is definitely apt. There is blood involved, lots of it. This book picks up shortly after the other one, like a week or so later. Harry picks up a missing person case, but discovers more and more people are missing, including a close friend who can see the future. She pieces together the clues and finds a lot of trouble. Several characters help her out – a bumbling detective, a demon, friends, random people. Actions have consequences, and Harry’s actions, minor and major, have dire consequences for her. What she might think is harmless or playful can come back to bite her. We also get a glimpse into the magical government, its structure and its members. I was hoping to see a bit of Miriam in this novel but she’s largely invisible. Nevertheless, this was a fun, riveting read.
Blood Witch Harrietta "Harry" Lee has a lot on her plate; she picks up a missing person case and discovers a conspiracy, one that takes a personal edge when her best friend goes missing as well. She's also got a demonic sigil glowing on her stomach, a hapless actual-fedora-and-trenchcoat PI running around in his own noir lighting, and a seriously dangerous taste in dames.
I quite liked Bloodbath, pt 2 of the Harrietta Lee books, for being fast-paced urban fantasy detective work. Harry stands out (for me, at least) due to the sheer amount of uuuuh blood that's happening all around her. Her sister is a magical healer, and Harry, with an ill-judged sense of consequences, barrels into mortal danger (blood seeping almost dying type mortal danger), more than once.
So put on your vampire fangs and dig in!
oh ALSO it's queer and kinky these are things I forgot to mention but are, in fact, my favorite parts
This is such a wonderful book and I hope it's a series because two books is not enough. It's so well written, the visuals you get are as if I'm watching a movie. Every character, whether minor, main or just passing through has so much personality. It gives so much depth to the story. Stephanie Ahn, you have a gift for story telling and I'm happy you decided to share that gift with us.
A wonderful follow-up to the first, Ahn continues to prove her mastery of the urban fantasy genre. Henrietta Lee takes her licks, but won't quit, trying to unravel a mystery that'll keep you turning the page. Once again her world is both fun and delightfully diverse, a lived-in reality that remains hopeful, even when things get bleak. If you're a fan of urban fantasy, this is a must!
Well, despite my misgivings re the kink and brevity of the first book in this series, I decided to give it another go. This story felt fuller and was filled with interesting characters. It was well-written, and had a cast that was diverse in terms of race/nationality (as well as witch/demon/vampire/etc.). I cared about what happened to the characters.
Oh this is SOOOO good!! Harry Lee is a useless lesbian, with a demon (literal!) lover, and what amounts to a death wish, but isn't quite. She's fantastically persistent, incredibly dangerous (to herself as much as anyone else), and a terrific friend.
And it's oh so worth it! The first book set the stage for this one. The pace kept me riveted, Harry had me laughing out loud. Next book is just too far away for me!!!
I thought this book was overall super fun - Harry has so much personality, the new characters were great, and the mystery (and ways the magic was integrated) really worked. There were a couple of points where the pace kind of dragged and a few jokes that didn't quite land but overall great book.
If you like October Daye but would like something a little gayer, this is a good one. (Swap out fae for witches/magic users, and the Leather Pants cat king love interest for a dominant femme demon, but the same kind of detective vibes.)
This was just as much as the first book, and we get a bit more action all around with the added page length! I really love Harry as a character and am definitely interested to see how her relationship with Lilith progresses in the future. The over-arching 'mystery of the week' aspect was really fun and engaging as well and we get to learn some more about the magic system of this world and the people who govern it. I would definitely recommend this to other people like me who like things like Hellblazer in theory, but quickly get tired of all the misogyny.
Harry is back and better than ever! After loving Deadline, I had high hopes for Bloodbath and every hope was fulfilled. The snark, the heart, the kisses, the fun world and engaging mystery: all returned in full force for the first novel-length adventure. Ahn's work continues to be one of the best NA urban fantasy investigator series to date.
