Jessica Gleave writes love stories set in fantasy worlds. In other words, she’s a genre masher. Jessica likes building fantastical make-believe worlds where her main characters fall in love. When she’s not busy writing her latest novels, she’s a busy mum of two. She lives with them and her husband along the east coast of northern New South Wales in Australia. Jessica loves nothing more than a glass of bubbly, eating chocolates, and reading a good book. Preferably all together.
FTC DISCLAIMER: I RECEIVED AN E-ARC FROM THE PUBLISHER THROUGH THE QUIRKY BLIND DATE WITH A BOOK PROGRAM. I VOLUNTARILY OFFER MY HONEST REVIEW OF THE BOOK, THOUGH IT IS NOT EXPECTED OF ME! RECEIPT OF THIS BOOK IN THIS MANNER DOES NOT AFFECT MY OPINION OF THE BOOK OR THE CONTENT OF MY REVIEW!
I didn't know what I was getting into when this book was sent to me, but I'm actually really glad it was! This was a very interesting and engaging read!
I absolutely loved the plot concept of the different tribes of Merpeople! It was totally different than anything I had read previously, and gave the story a rich tapestry of peoples to engage with. I also loved the history of the Merpeople themselves! It was a wonderful story, and one I could actually believe in!
There were a couple of different romances happening in this book, and it was easy to picture the two sisters falling in love with two different men. However, my biggest complaint was that I couldn't tell the exact time period that the book was set in. Darren's speech patterns made me think of historical Scotland time frame, but then he'd do something like take a phone call or a shower and it jarred me into more modern times. I really wanted it to just have been clearly stated!
I was easily able to connect with the sisters and began caring about what happened to them and their world. I loved that Charisa actually got to meet the cause of the disaster of the previous alliance and interact with her! I appreciated having the extra insight of that story to weave into the current one!
All things considered, this was a very enjoyable and engaging read, and I would happily recommend it to others!
Love this story of merpeople! In this underwater world you will find that politics, war, love, trust and a slightly rebellious princess still take place (like us humans) and that merpeople even though they look beautiful and peaceful can be deceiving. Evelda, Queen of the Atlantic Ocean and her sister, Princess Charisa, had become noble leaders at such a young age, due to the early deaths of their parents. The Atlantic is at war and needs allies. Queen Evelda can only think of one solution and that is to invite the Pacific Ocean royals and discuss an alliance. Joining the king and queen is their son Thaine, who Evelda has noticed and taken a liking to. A marriage proposition? Unveiling of secrets? False intentions? Princess Charisa needs some alone time and asks to be excused. Charisa swims towards her place of quiet when a large boulder of sorts lands on her, only to find its a human sinking lower into the depths of the ocean. Charisa decides to help him which may be the wrong decision when there is so much at stake with the alliance. The Queens Alliance is the first book of the Kingdoms of the Ocean series, it is a fantastic book and introduces the characters amazingly. Their story is not over and I cannot wait to read book two, The Princess Mission. If you love made up worlds and an enjoyable read, this is a must! Onto book two I go!
Been a long time since I read a mermaid tale, and I certainly hope its a short time between stories in this series. A well crafted and beautifully scripted tale of love and hate, envy and sorrow mixed in with a little romance and some high intrigue.
An epic PNR story full of wonderful and diverse characters caught up in a world of political machinations, marriage alliances and forbidden love. I love the two young royal heroines and the characters surrounding them. This is the first book and I am looking forward to reading what happens next...I received a copy of this book from the author via the Quirky Blind Date with a Book
I didn’t want to put this book down. Jessica Gleave’s description of the Atlantic Ocean Kingdom was beautifully written. I absolutely loved Queen Evelda and her sister Daughter of the sea Charisa and the struggles they have to go threw to keep their kingdom safe after losing their Parents. Can’t wait to get my hands on the next book!
I received a direct to kindle copy from the Author and wanted to leave my honest review.
Thought this book was a good concept with some good ideas but was just executed poorly. Firstly, it was riddled with spelling and grammar errors, so many I considered giving up by Chapter 2. It needed a proof read, unless it was just the version I was reading. The description was quite sparse and the characters were pretty 2D. The worldbuilding was intriguing but I felt it could have been expanded a lot more.
I really didn't buy the Queen's romance at all. Instant love with nothing to back it up and it fell very flat. The princess' romance was even worse. Darren is such an extremely unlikeable character, thinking of nothing except of how hot Charisa is all the time. He went from feeling suicidal to being turned on in about 10 pages. He had very little character development. It also didn't help that for a few chapters I assumed Darren was either an old man or the story was set in the past because of the way he spoke. As a Scottish person, I appreciate the attempt to replicate a Scottish accent, but unfortunately his dialogue was extremely irritating. Very few people under the age of sixty say 'och' and 'lass' regularly, and certainly not in almost every sentence. I read those words more times in one page than I've heard them spoken aloud all year. The words 'didnae' (didn't) and 'doesnae' (doesn't) were also confused several times despite the fact they're not interchangeable. Also, the Scottish word for 'No' is not 'Nay'. That word hasn't been used in a good few centuries. I was rolling my eyes every time Darren said something like 'Nay, lass' or 'Och, I'm sorry, lass'. A man calling someone lass these days is also pretty condescending unless they're a child. The word 'bonnie' was also used far too much. It's quite old-fashioned and only used in certain contexts. In general, the Scottish dialogue was just not executed well at all and could have done with a beta read by someone who is actually from the same region of Scotland as the character.
It's a shame because I felt there was potential for this story and its set up. I tried the first few chapters of the next book, but the Scottish dialogue and characters got even worse (one character even using an Australian word which I had to look up) so I've decided to end the series here.
This is awesome start to the series. And another amazing read by Jessica. A great mermaid story with great characters and plot and storyline which definitely draws in the reader. The characters feel so real and relatable. You are going to be hooked on this new world that Jessica has created.

This is a really sweet story and concept but could have been executed better. If you're looking for a fun little read, you'll like it. Don't expect any sophisticated writing.
Spoilers below:
The story may have been better with the selection of only writing from both sister's POV. Having the POV of the male love interests removed the suspense of their true feelings and alliance towards the queen and her sister. Knowing how the prince felt towards the queen mermaid lowered the stakes and removed an additional layer of conflict. This story could have benefited from more descriptions of actions and interactions that showed the reader who the characters are, we do not need literal dots connected for us. You can learn more organically about a character's personality and values based on dialogue and how they respond to situations.
Something the author did well was including the story about what actually happened to the original king and queen of the Atlantic. That usage of Dramatic Irony, where the readers have knowledge that the main characters do not, added a great element to the story. I really thought that part was well done, even though it was chaotically written and the fight scene was hard to visualize.
Additionally, Some of the internal dialogue of the human man was really creepy and made me feel concerned for the sister mermaid's safety around him.

ONE AWESOME ADVENTURE!!! Double up! Jessica drops the bomb and lowers the boom, controls the passage, riding roughshod, wielding this jewel together fluidly. Mastering the ups and downs, weaving a cocoon so intricately and tight, drawing you deeper into this tangled web until nothing else exists. Struggling with the drama, fear, intrigue, turmoil and suspense spirals, thrusting this baby into the eye of the storm, blasting it into a tailspin with stunning impacts. Trudging through the trials and tribulations along with a slew of sleek twists and tight turns that thrusts this bad boy to whole new level. The personalities are well matched and blended with enough flaws for diversity. The characters and scenes are strikingly sharp with abundant details and colorful descriptions so rich and lively, they blend and flow magnificently. Remarkable job Jessica, thanks for sharing this little jewel with us.
I am going to start this review with I 100% judged a book by its cover, I bought the book as it was absolutely gorgeous, and I stand by my reasonings, and to be honest, that’s how I buy most of my books!
The Queen’s Alliance is a Mermaid romance, following the story of the Queen of the Atlantic Ocean, Evelda and her sister Princess Charisa. the story is set 10 years past the death of their parents. and goes through some of the adjustments of their lives.
While I didn’t LOVE this book, I didn’t hate it either. I really enjoyed the story, I think for me the constant jumping between characters perspectives with no indication of who it is made it slightly difficult. I also feel like it could have gone into a bit more detail, the book is small 230ish pages, but i just felt like some details were missing, or cut short too soon.
I will be reading book 2, as I said I enjoyed the story and I want to know what happens.
This looked interesting and the main character's colouring reminds me of Mera from Aquaman. Evelda is thrust into her role as queen suddenly at her parents shocking deaths. Known as the ice queen of the Atlantic, she has to prove her worth against the other kingdoms of the sea whose rulers have more experience. Her young sister, Charisa doesn't care for ruling and wants to be able to so what she wants.
The instalove felt jarring especially with how the hero, Thaine is so opposed to the marriage when he hears about it. But I liked how Evelda struggles with not showing emotions as she feels pressure to be the best leader she can be to her people and kingdom.
The story follows her sister, Charisa when she gives her kiss to a human, Darren which has significance for mermaids. The take on mermaids and how they function felt different then what I have seen and read.
The way the author wrote the words the Scottish people, including Darren spoke felt out of place for a story set in the modern day.
The LGBTQ rep was with Charisa's close friend Hans and his mate, Christian.
THE QUEEN'S ALLIANCE is the first book in the "Kingdoms of The Ocean Series". It is also the first book I've ever read that takes place completely underwater. Super cool.
This story is short at about 170 pages and I was able to read it in one sitting. It is a clean story that I think would be appropriate for my younger cousins.
I do not know much Greek Mythology so it was cool to learn about Poseidon and how the water world began.
I am absolutely invested enough that I will continue the series.

DNF. I just had a hard time getting into this book. It felt like the beginning was dragging, I wasn’t getting any character development, and I just was not pulled in. I was avoiding reading it and it was just not worth the time for me.
1.5 stars. Super boring, badly written and edited, and the author clearly does not know enough about politics, war and monarchies to have any business writing about them, let alone love and relationships.
