A celebration of natural hair, from afros to cornrows and everything in between, My Hair is Beautiful is a joyful baby board book with a powerful message of self-love.
Governor General’s Award-nominated author Shauntay Grant brings her unique spoken-word style to this fun read-aloud, featuring minimalist text and vibrant photos of toddlers sporting fresh dos.
A beautifully designed book that combines uncomplicated text with strong, cheerful visuals. Focusing on the many ways to wear and style natural hair, children joyfully show off beaded braids, updos, and afro puffs. A wonderful addition to library collections for increasing a diverse affirmation of beauty. This would also be a fun book to pick up anytime you need a lift from the vision of sweet young faces.
White backgrounds and bright photographs make this board book instantly appealing to little eyes. A mirror at the end helps to celebrate the beautiful hair of the child that's listening to the story.
My Hair is Beautiful is a cute little board book with beautiful photographs of children with different hairstyles. The author has a two-word spoken word description on each photograph that describes the hair in a positive and cute way. The book is colorful and ends with a mirror so the child can be included in the hair celebration. The one thing I wish was different is that there was a little more writing on each page to really put more positivity into the book.
The book highlights different natural hairdos of black children. The last page has an embedded mirror for readers to look at themselves. I might not be the target audience, but looking at the faces of these happy toddlers brought joy into my heart. Shauntay Grant is the award winning Canadian author of Africville and Up Home.
Oh, this book is gorgeous! Young children of color can be self-conscious of their hair. But this book encourages them to embrace all of the different style possibilities with quick, fun words and absolutely beautiful photographs of young children sporting the different 'dos. Each of these children are beautiful and so are all of their various hairstyles. I adored this book and would absolutely include it in my classroom library, where I know my kids would also love looking at it.
Thank you to the publisher for fulfilling my review request via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Love it! This boardbook celebrates the many styles for black hair, with a focus on female hair styles. All the photos are of young girls and baby girls. Not only affirming in nature but great for expanding vocabulary as each page describes the hairstyles with two word adjectives and eye catching fonts that are large and multicolored as you read from page to page. A recommended purchase for all libraries that have boardbooks.
I love that there's a "baby faces" board book (an excellent genre) featuring not just Black kids but Black hair specifically.
The kids all look happy, and there's a range of skin tones in addition to the various hairstyles represented. Great for Black kids to see themselves represented, but also great for non-Black kids to be exposed to this representation in a context of enthusiastic affirmation.
I was able to review My Hair Is Beautiful for free from Netgalley and Nimbus publishing for providing me with an advanced ARC in exchange for an honest review. This book is great. It encourages babies with natural hairstyles to embrace all of their different hair styles. The photos used in the book are nice and bright and toddlers will love them. My daughter enjoyed reading this book.
What a cute book. Very visual and bright with photographs. The language descriptions of the types of hair and the mirror at the end make this board book a hit with youngsters. Very affirming of Black children.
Brava to Shauntay. A wonderful boardbook for any child. Yes it speaks to self-love, to recognition of self but so too does it address a concept of self-acceptance and pride and individuality. All that in a excellent rhythmic cadence of descriptive text.
I love this book. The smiling faces show happy children with their different hair. In my school, young kids like to touch and feel each others hair because everyone is so different. This shows that. I will be buying this for the school library.
It's always nice to see afro hair celebrated that's why it reminds me of my book where I illustrated several hairstyles as well - https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
This is the cutest little board book I've seen in a while! Very simple pictures with text.. Two-four words, rhyming, alliteration. All african-american hair textures and styles common for little girls. I imagine a toddler would have a great time identifying with this book.
Beautiful bright photos. Wish that there would have been boys featured too (this is my only criticism), or that there was a companion boy book, because I loved this book so much and cannot wait to show it to my patrons!
no i was so excited when i saw the cover of this book bc this kids hair literally looks like mine. if i werent in the library i would have squealed hehe. the entire book is amazing i love that it shows different hairstyles on black kids!
This is a great diversity book to have in an elementary classroom. It is important to normalize our differences to kids at a young age so that they grow up knowing that they are unique and that is ok.
Pictures of joyful children with hair left natural or styled to celebrate are the focus of this book. There isn't much content, but this would be enjoyable for babies and toddlers.
December 2020 - great for babies and toddlers who like photos of other kids, highlighting Black kids with different hairstyles. A mirror at the back is always a hit with my 2 year old!
Honestly this is the perfect board book. Babies LOVE to look at babies, and it’s a great way to diversify the people my son looks at every day. And it’s so dad gum cute!
I love this beautiful board book that celebrates "natural knotty," "cutesy coily," and "beaded braided" hair. My little one loves exploring these colorful photos of babies.
Great board book depicting hair styles of young black girls and the book ends with a mirror for a child to see their hairstyle. Love the style names, fluffy frizzy, wavy wrapper, etc.
A short book full of beautiful black children wearing their hair in its full natural beauty. It warms my heart to see a book like this. As a kid, I wished my 4C hair was like Tia and Tamera's from Sister, Sister who both had a head full of long curly hair. Their hair is beautiful of course but I never stopped to think why I was so desperate to make my hair like theirs. It was because I didn't see enough of myself in the world, I saw very little to validate me and tell me my hair was also beautiful. My Hair is Beautiful is such a simple book but it's also hugely powerful, I'm glad it exists.
I read this book this morning and it was a quick read.
The photos used in the book are nice and bright and toddlers will love them – my daughter is 2 and she thought that they were great!
The book had a great way of showing some of the different hair styles that they may see throughout the day or week and it showcases how cool some children’s hair can be – a sweet read!
