Having obtained a degree in Journalism, but with an affinity for literature and creative writing, Olivia Bennet knew from a young age that her future lay in the romantic ideals of the past. With a fascination for the Regency era and a good romance, she started her career as a historical romance author the old-fashioned way: with pen and paper.
Born in rural Devon, Olivia draws inspiration from the vast farmlands of the British countryside and the people living in the surrounding villages. An avid artist, she takes her sketchbook everywhere with her and captures the beauty of nature, which she then incorporates into her books.
This is such a unique story and it grabbed at my heartstrings from start to end. Emanuel Beckett, Duke of Helmsfield, lost his leg when he was a young boy in a horrific highwaymen robbery that saw his parents killed right in front of him. He won't be happy until he can revenge their death and find the men who did this. I must say the one scene near the end where he lies down between his parents' graves and cries, had me bawling, it's such a touching scene.
His aunt decides to do some matchmaking and before he knows it, he's betrothed to Isabella Addison and although she's not too happy about it either, when they do meet, it's instant attraction. I so enjoyed their conversations and seeing them grow closer and fall in love. She is exactly what he needed to save him but.....can he get through what he discovers about her father!!!
A very well written story which I thoroughly enjoyed. Definitely recommend this book!!
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
This is a tricky review to write. I liked the main characters of "A Sinful Duke She Can't Refuse" and thought that Isabella and Emmanuel seemed like a good fit for each other. I also liked the plot for about the first two-thirds of the book. I thought that Isabella and Emmanuel's courtship was really sweet, the mystery was engaging, and even though we knew who the bad guys were, their motivations remained a mystery to me.
Unfortunately, the last third of the book seemed to fall apart very quickly IMO. These bad guys were just SO dumb! Their motivations became very clear, very quickly, and certainly greed has led to murder many times before, so that part was fine. However, I was really bothered by a number of things. First, there was the fact that Isabella's father decided to bring his steward, Chandler, along to the house party, and the steward then socialized with the others like he was any other invited guest. There was an obvious class divide problem that was not addressed; would a working-class steward really be allowed to socialize with not only his employer, but a duke and his family too? Also, my understanding is that one of a steward's duties was to look after an estate while the landowner was away. Lord Gefferton could possibly have justified bringing Chandler along if he needed his assistance in "conducting business" while at the house party, but even so, I can't figure out why Chandler would have participated in the social events. Additionally, if Gefferton and Chandler were so worried about Emmanuel recognizing Chandler from the events of his youth, it seems like they would have wanted to keep the two men apart, not keep putting them together. That just provided more opportunity for something about Chandler to jog Emmanuel's memory.
Then there was the "big confrontation" at the end of the book. I found it to be completely ridiculous and unbelievable that the entire family, women included, went traipsing along, unarmed, to confront the bad guys. Why would they want to give Chandler and his men the opportunity to take more hostages? Fortunately for them, they survived this encounter because the members of Chandler's gang made such terrible criminals. Not once, not twice, but THREE times they allowed one of the women to walk up to them and just snatch the guns out of their hands. REALLY?
Speaking of Chandler's gang, where did he find these men and what exactly did he promise them in exchange for their help? Was he hiding a secret stash of cash somewhere? It's tough to imagine that he would still have money put away from when Lord Gefferton paid him to steal the jewelry from Emmanuel's parents. The only "ransom" that was requested was a pardon for Chandler; the other gang members would not have received money or anything else in exchange for Isabella's safe return. If Chandler wasn't paying them, what was in it for the other men?
Overall, it's safe to say that this was not my favorite Olivia Bennet book. I would still give her next book a shot, however.

I loved this book! I found myself smiling from the start, particularly when Isabella and Emanuel first met, but even before that, just listening to how they conversed with others. Both seemed genuinely kind and good-natured. In fact, both characters were so free from guile and utterly lacking in artifice, it was refreshing. Although the plot required a great deal of suspension of disbelief, and at one point verged on ludicrous, the characters and conversations more than made up for that. On more than one occasion, I found myself smiling at a comment or shaking my head in agreement or dismay. I was absolutely immersed.
In chapter 10, there is a scene where Emanuel and Isabella are in the theatre together and she wishes to comfort him, but propriety will not allow physical contact. The wonderfully detailed description of how she overcomes this restriction is poignant and touching (pun intended).
In chapter 20, there is a part where Isabella allows Emanuel to kiss her. The description of the euphoria and weightless sensation that Isabella feels, akin to disembodiment, causing Isabella to question whether her body is even under her control anymore, and even whether her "floating soul" is, in fact, "free of earthly care or responsibility" is profoundly relatable. It brought me back to my first kiss and that almost overpowering temptation to throw caution to the wind due to the surreal nature of this new experience.
Finally, there was a section near the end, that made me burst out laughing. Emanuel was reading to Isabella from a risque novel which, apparently was no great work of literature. This was his impression of the writing: "One passage was so heavy on the metaphors that it confused Emmanuel into thinking that they fired an actual musket and killed both characters in the bloodiest version of coitus interruptus he had ever seen. Frankly, he shared Isabella's notion that an actual murder might improve the story." Luckily, the same cannot be said for Olivia Bennett's writing. It was thoroughly enjoyable and I highly recommend it.
Title: Nightmare from the past is awakened when the crippled Duke meets Isabella’s father.
SETTING: Isabella Addison, youngest daughter of the Viscount of Gefferton, is a ‘bluestocking’ and has shown no interest in the young men she has met so far. Her mother and her friend Helen, Lady Edric Beckett, plan a family dinner including Lady Helen’s nephew, Emmanuel Beckett, Duke of Helmsfield. It is precisely because the 2 young people have shown a similar lack of interest in the doings of the ‘ton’, that the women think they might be a good match. Isabella is told about the young Duke and his lack of a lower limb from an accident. Both are used to such intrigues and good naturedly, both young people attend the dinner. Surprisingly, they find themselves quite compatible! Thus starts the tender relationship between these 2 seeming misfits, who fit so well together! Isabella’s father, taken unawares by the appearance of the young Duke, is obviously uncomfortable and not friendly. Worse, he works behind the scene trying to get Sarah, a daughter quite close to Isabella, to try to dissuade Isabella from the relationship. Why is the Viscount so opposed to the match, when earlier he was eager for her to marry? Emmanuel is haunted by nightmares of the murder of his parents before his very eyes—the same murder that left him shot in the knee, causing him to lose his lower leg. He still sees the eyes of the murderer in his dreams, although he was only 8 at the time, and years have since passed. Why does the Viscount’s steward cause Emmanuel unease, and why does he accompany the family to Emmanuel’s house party in their honor? CRITIQUE: Explosive ending to what starts out as just another Regency Romance, albeit between a Bluestocking and a crippled Duke! All along, unanswered questions arise, leaving us feeling there is more to the story than we know—and it seems as if Isabella’s father has secrets to hide! The story takes a sudden and frightening turn that ultimately reveals hidden secrets leading to disaster for some, and elimination of nightmares for Emmanuel. Although somewhat mild initially, this story picks up steam and becomes a cliff-hanger I could not put down! Perhaps a bit more bedroom activity than I prefer, the story itself was the best I have read by this author. I look forward to her further work.
I didn't make it very far into the story. The prose is simple yet over the top. I slogged through the first chapter but didn't see any improvement so gave up.
I wanted to like this book so much. The layout and general plot wasn’t bad, a bit garbled, but had promise, I wanted to enjoy the characters, they had promise, but were almost embarrassingly naive. Lots of “fillers” that had minimal to do with story.
Also really confused as to why some things were extremely historically accurate, while the majority of the book took so many liberties that is was almost comical.
The book could have been an enjoyable read but for the unnecessary murder mystery. The romance aspect of this book was cute and it by itself would have been a good book, I don't understand the need to add the murder mystery aspect. It was also really poorly done, a child could have figured it out. I thought it was completely unnecessary and frankly it took away from their romance and made the story boring and lame.

Diana Addison, Viscountess of Gefferton sat down at the table to write to her dear friend Helen, who she had not seen since they were both debutantes 30 years ago. Their husbands currently served at Whitehall together. She had heard that Helen, Lady Edric Beckett, was in Town to find a bride for her nephew, Emmanuel Beckett, Duke of Helmsfield. Speculations on why he didn’t participate in the Season to find a bride himself led to rumors that he was hideous to look at or crippled. Diana likewise happened to need a groom for Isabella who, as a bluestocking, would be unlikely to find a husband if not pushed into it.
Emmanuel’s leg had needed to be amputated after an incident where his parents were murdered and he was shot in the leg and left to die at the age of 8. A subsequent infection necessitated the amputation. Since then, he keeps to himself, earning the “eccentric” label, and enjoys spending his time browsing his extensive library and reading his books. Isabella also enjoys reading far more than fancy parties, to her mother’s dismay. So when Isabella and Emmanuel meet, each feels an attraction for the other and, finding they have common interests, they decide a betrothal just might be acceptable to them after all!
There is much more going on here, as a mystery remains concerning the death of Emmanuel’s parents. Will the Duke learn the truth at last? Will he and Isabella marry? Grab a copy of this book and immerse yourself in the intriguing story line. The characters are memorable and you will enjoy their path to find happiness.
A Sinful Duke She Can't Refuse by Olivia Bennet was one of the better Regency romances I have read in a while. I totally loved both the Earl of Hemsfield and Lady Isabella. They both were such unique personalities. The Earl's condition was about as far from crippling as a situation could be despite peoples' opinions. The fact that he fell completely for Lady Isabella and didn't bother to hide it made him even more endearing. It was terrific that he wrote to her every day. That fact alone enhanced their relationship. Bluestocking romances and independent woman are some of my favorites and Lady Isabella certainly personified both of these totally admirable traits. The amount of forgiveness shown by both of these excellent characters was out of the norm and extremely endearing. The epilogue-taking place 17 years later was also unique; those are usually two months to three years after the end of the story.
This is quite a unique story, although I suspect it has some twentieth century values inflicted on characters 200 years earlier. That made it none the less heart wrenching. The fact the relationship was still going strong 17 years later added to the romance. I whole-heartedly recommend this book. Readers will love it!
I received a free ARC of A Sinful Duke She Can't Refuse. All opinions and ideas stated herein are my own.
Isabella💃💋, a bluestocking, meets Emmanuel Beckett🐺🍆⛲, Duke of Helmsfield. It's a result of a matchmaking scheme between Isabella's mother and the Duke's aunt. Emmanuel🐺🍆⛲ is a young, very handsome and charismatic man, but he lost his lower leg as a child in a shooting when his parents were attacked and murdered. He still has PTSD from the experience. Even though Emmanuel🐺🍆⛲ has the most modern prosthetic, it still rubs and is somewhat awkward. So, he doesn't dance much or attend ton functions. He also prefers the quiet life of the country. Yet he needs a wife and Isabella💃💋 needs a husband.
Both of them get along great from the beginning but Isabella's father doesn't seem that happy, and she overhears him planning something with two previous suitors she denied. Is there some sort of conspiracy? Is it criminal🔪🔫? Why?
ARC Received from the Author 📚. The Opinions Expressed here are my own.
This is a wonderful Regency Romance with a murder mystery included! The book is well written and the relationship between Isabella💃💋 band Emmanuel🐺🍆⛲ is well developed.
Diana Addison, Viscountess of Gefferton wrote a letter to Helen, Lady Edric Beckett to discuss marriage between Helen's nephew and Diana's daughter. Emmanuel Beckett, Duke of Helmsfield returned home and discovered that his aunt had invited company for dinner a Lady Gefferton. The next morning Isabelle asked her mother if she had a good dinner and her mother said yes she went back to reading Gulliver's travels. Then her mother told her she had some news that she hoped Isabelle would like Isabelle asked what it was and her mother told her she had found her husband. Emmanuel was told by his aunt that she had found him a bride needed one of the two of them were happy with their mother and there aunt over the good news. Emmanuel's parents had been killed when he was eight years old by robbers he had been shot in the leg and ended up losing his leg so he had to wear a prosthesis to get around. Isabelle decided that her mother had chosen and hideous man for her to marry her mother informed her he was not hideous he was very nice-looking and he was a good man. Now you have to read the rest of the book to find out what happens. It's a good book...
This was a truly enjoyable romance that I found romantic as well as intriguing. Emmanuel is very tortured Duke who lived through seeing his parents murdered and himself shot in the leg which had to be amputated. Emmanuel is an enigma to the ton and gossiped about often. Isabelle is a bluestocking, she loves to read which for a woman is something the ton doesn't approve of. Isabelle is more comfortable reading a book then going to ton functions. Emmanuel's Aunt and Isabelle's Mother are friends and they contrive to betroth them together which neither Isabelle or Emmanuel want but once they meet, that changes and they fall in love. When I figured out where the story was headed, I had to wonder how their relationship would play out. All turned out satisfactory in the end which romances always do but it was interesting how it was dealt with and I felt the author did a wonderful job doing that. The extended epilogue was awesome as I loved seeing how the couple fared years later. Definitely a thumbs up for me!

Lady Isabella Gefferton is a bluestocking, an outcast of the Ton. Society calls Emmanuel, the Duke of Helmsfield, an eccentric cripple. Isabella's mother and Emmanuel's aunt are best friends that have not seen each other in years. When they get together, they think their children will make a good match. They plan a meeting, Isabella and Emmanuel are skeptical. But when they meet? Sparks fly and they actually enjoy each other's company!
Emmanuel lost his leg as a child, when his parents were murdered. He has never found the men responsible. After meeting Isabella, he begins to have more nightmares about that horrible day. He remembers more details. Something isn't quite right with some of the people he meets, could they know something about that fateful day?
This was a great book! I'm not sure that the Duke was the sinful one! I think that was Isabella and her racy books, pushing the limits of propriety!
Loved reading this book. It is written with soul searching clarity that makes the story and the characters come alive. I especially liked how mature the H/h personalities were. Even though the h was about 19 or 20 she was not a simpering missish young woman. She knows herself well, what she likes and what she does not. She wants nothing more than to meet a man who will accept her for who she is. The H is a good man who had an unfortunate accident in his youth that caused him to lose part of his leg. Feeling that marriage was out of his life plans, his aunt and her longtime friend match him up with the h. While I love the way the two of them get to know each other the subplot was also interesting. The h's father and his steward were guilty of something horrible that had to do with the murders of the H's mother and father. An excellent read and I highly recommend it.
This is one of the best historical romances I have read recently. The heroine is a bluestocking right after my heart, but she is confident and without self worth issues. I absolutely loved the depiction of the hero who is a change from other historical romance heroes with disabilities. He is not hesitant to ask for help, knows his limitations, has come to terms with his disability without being full of self pity. Also, the theme of forgiveness that ultimately runs through the story rather than revenge is a breath of fresh air. I received a copy of the book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed this book very much, Emmanuel and Isabella are fun characters beneath their quirky exteriors. I really enjoyed the daily "love letters" and the humor they both brought to the story. Isabella is both shy and bold, and their common love of reading brings them together quite quickly. I love that Emmanuel is not afraid to show his emotions to Isabella, and that she is able to comfort him in his time of need. Solving the mystery of his parents' death ends in a very compassionate way, which was refreshing to read. Emmanuel and Isabella are two-of-a-kind in their souls, and I loved reading their love story.
Arranged marriages can be more than either ever expected. Her parents insist and his aunt arranges a marriage between Isabella and Emanuel. Can this work? However, Emanuel is instantly attracted to Isabella and while she finds him not to be old and decrepit, she is resistant to the idea of marriage in any form. How they work through it all and then find news of how his parents death came about is the icing on the cake.
I was having some trouble getting into the storyline for the first chapter or so, but once I got through those the story really started to pick up and the plot became more involved. There were few sexual areas, mostly smaller until later in the story. I really liked the hidden plot line and my only disappointment was the ending actually. I time lag this long left so much out. Good story all I all though. Thanks for sharing your gifts.
Although I do think the title could have been better, overall the book itself was a very good read. I found it well written, the storyline was a good one and different than the norm. I enjoyed the chemistry between Emanuel and Isabella. I would definitely recommend this Historical Regency Romance to those that enjoy this genre.
Indurence, discrips ,this story, of a young beautiful bluestocking, and a young tormented Duke.As there courtship begins, a tormented Duke, s past comes to light, that will change two families forever. This story will Crip your heart, and take you on a journey, as you read each page. Thank you!❤️
I really enjoyed this book. What a twist And turns. Murder, maime, dreams, finding the one to help you on with life , finding the one responsible for murder of your parents , forgiveness out of love. I so enjoyed the epilogue, I think they complete the story. Great read.
Emmanuel Beckett,Duke of Helmsfield & Isabella Addison 's story was quite unexpected. His life has been shaped by a horrific tragedy. She wanted more from life than what society had to offer. Despite all the odds being against them, together they are determine to proof everyone wrong. Enjoyed this story. Highly Recommend. Happy Reading.
Boring, impossible book. Skimmed to finish somehow. The courtship was too long and hero and heroine was irritating. Plot was not bad, execution was bad. Characters were so very young, especially hero and why every one kept wondering why he didn’t marry yet is beyond me 😨 For what ever things heroine did research, she went on and on about that detail, but everything felt to be wall paperish.
I would have given this a full 5 Stars if not for the errors an Editor obviously missed, which in many cases killed the flow of the story where they appeared. Despite that, it was an entertaining read and I found myself drawn to Isabella's character ever so much.
