Silver Screen Kisses is a collection of stories inspired by movies from everyone’s favorite list. My Fair Lacey by Janette Rallison Lacey Johnson has dreamed of opening a restaurant for years. All she needs is one little loan to make it happen. When Garrett Halifax, her roommate’s Harvard-educated brother, volunteers to change her image and teach her to speak correctly, she jumps at the chance. But she quickly finds she’s in over her head. Pretending to fit in with the town’s elite is harder than she thought, and despite her best efforts, she’s falling for Garrett. Could someone who is handsome, rich, and educated ever consider her as more than just a project? A contemporary twist on My Fair Lady, this is a story that is sure to please Echo Ridge fans.

She would be happy to focus on getting to know him better, but her two jobs and two sons keep her ridiculously busy. Then there’s her ex-husband’s bookie, who’s impatiently waiting for the last couple payments on his debt.
Bret can’t help but notice how hard the beautiful Maria works and the similarities she has with the Zoomama he’s been talking with online. Though he really wants to make things easier for her, Bret accidentally gets her in hot water with both of her bosses. Can he get Maria to give him a chance in the real world and not just online?
The Princess Bride of Riodan by Rachelle J. Christensen When a mysterious man offers to help Elise redecorate the old Bed & Breakfast, she gladly hands him a wallpaper steamer. At the same time, Elise’s old crush from high school wants a relationship and she’s forced to decide whether to chase after a fairy tale ending or stay grounded in reality.
My Best Man’s Wedding by Cami Checketts Jessica Mason made a vow to marry her best guy friend, Josh, when they turned thirty. When Josh calls with the news that he's coming home to Echo Ridge for his wedding, Jessica is determined to break up the happy couple and take her rightful place as his bride. Gentry Trine, a coworker, agrees to pretend to be her fiancé to stir up feelings of jealousy. However, Jessica didn't realize fake fiancés could kiss like champions, and make a girl smile nonstop. Can she figure out which is the right man for her before she loses them both?
While You Were Skiing by Lucy McConnell Mia Davis’s new job in guest relations at Ruby Mountain Ski Resort gets complicated when the gorgeous Ryder Montgomery falls off the ski lift, tells everyone they are engaged, and then loses consciousness. Worried about a head injury, Mia plays along, making him lunch, kissing in the front entryway and planning a future together; a future Mia wants with all of her heart. Things become all the more complicated when Ryder’s estranged family gets involved. Caught up in the fantasy and romance, Mia has to tell the truth or risk losing a part of herself and the man she loves forever.
Janette Rallison has five children who keep her well supplied with plot ideas, sometimes even making cameo appearances in her novels. She likes to write romantic comedy because there is enough angst in real life, but theres a drastic shortage on both humor and romance.
Playing the Field was named Society of School Librarians International Best Book Award Honor Book, and both Alls Fair In Love, War, and High School and Love, Life, and the Pursuit of Free Throws were included on YALSAs Popular Paperbacks for Young Adults list. Fame Glory, and Other Things on My To Do List, was just chosen for IRAs YA Choices list for 2007
*I received a complimentary copy, which in no way affected my thoughts and opinions*
My Fair Lacey by Janette Rallison -- 4.5 Stars Lacey is rough around the edges and Garrett takes it upon himself to refine her and help her get a business loan to open her dream restaurant. I love the modern take on this classic and thought that the characters were great. Lacey is sweet and tries really hard to change and help herself. I could see her falling for Garrett along the way, but wanted to see more of Garrett's feelings for Lacey, more of a connection. This rags-to-riches type story really warms the heart and starts this collection off with a bang.
You’ve Got Email by Heather Tullis -- 5 Stars It's so easy to be someone else from the comfort of your own home and while under a pseudonym. Maria is falling in love online, but her real life encounters with Bret leave her feeling a bit irritated. Maria is so hardworking and loyal, sacrificing much for her boys. Bret is almost too good to be true. The way the online conversations are woven in with these characters real lives is great. This story left a sweet feeling in the pit of my stomach and the gradual love story warmed my heart. What a great way to put an even more modern spin on this classic.
The Princess Bride of Riodan by Rachelle J. Christensen -- 5 Stars I've mentioned before and I'm sure I'll mention it again, I'm a sucker for royalty stories and this one delivered a swoony sweet love triangle. Elise is single and working hard to save her grandma's house, when suddenly, she has two options for love--a crush from the past and a handsome prince! I love the ties to this romantic classic and the movie quotes kept a smile on my face. For a short story, this one is full of decisions, romance, and self-discovery and I enjoyed every minute.
My Best Man’s Wedding by Cami Checketts -- 5 Stars A marriage pact from the past gives Jessica comfort--if she and Josh are still single by the time they turn 30, they'll marry each other. When he calls with the news of his sudden engagement, she's determined to make him jealous. Enter in one fake fiancé. The way Gentry feels about Jessica almost caused my pages to smolder. He's intense and swoony and with the chemistry between these two, I don't know why she didn't just bag Josh because..if Jessica is so sure that Josh is the one for her, why haven't they talked in years? Why does she suddenly want him now? Although she's trying to sabotage the wedding, I love how mature she is (for the most part) in the way she deals with his fiancée. This is one elegant couple.
While You Were Skiing by Lucy McConnell -- 5 Stars This is one of my all-time favorite romantic comedies and this new spin stole my heart. There are a few similarities that made me smile, especially the almost word-for-word dialogue in places, but there are enough twists to make it its own story. Mia saves Ryder and now everyone thinks they're engaged. Once again, palpable chemistry...*sigh*... I love Mia's interactions with the family and with Ryder and nearly swooned at their banter, as she helps him recover. A great ending to this set!
***Overall, I really loved this collection and loved the way each story was tied together to this fantastic fictional setting. I feel at home in this place and feel that these characters are real people and friends. I loved the connections to movies and thought each story was told in a creative and unique way, yet had enough similarities that they were comfortable. As always, I'm already eagerly awaiting more.***
I will always love my novels, but sometimes a quick novella is just a nice way to get some reading in when you don’t have a lot of time. I was beyond excited when I first learned of this anthology, which takes some of my favorite RomCom movies and retells them in book form. What a great combination and I hope they do this again with other great movies!
My Fair Lacey The movie My Fair Lady is my mom’s all time favorite movie, so it holds a special place in my heart. It really is a charming movie and this novella is a fun retelling. I loved the contemporary setting and how Ms. Rallison was able to bring a classic to life in our modern times. Lacey was a likable heroine, she comes from a poorer upbringing, but has very big dreams for her and her family. To achieve those goals she undergoes not only a physical makeover, but an educational one as well. Leave it to Rallison to fill the story with charm, embarrassing moments, and a sweet swoony romance. This is definitely one I will want to read again.
Content: One mild scene where her date wants to take things to the next level - she handles the situation with flare. haha
You’ve Got Email This is probably one of my very favorite movies, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve read it. This was a fun retelling. I liked that it was similar to the movie, yet did its own thing. I thought it was fun that Bret and Maria actually worked together and had no idea they were corresponding with each other on the side. Cute story.
The Princess Bride of Riodan Raise your hand if you’ve seen Princess Bride at least 100 times?? This Girl! I admit, I was excepting more of a contemporary retelling and was a bit surprised that the story wasn’t really all that similar. I did love finding fun quotes from the movie sprinkled throughout the story. Elise was a hardworking and kind character. She’s sacrificed a lot to stay in Echo Ridge and take care of her grandmother and all the bills. She’s a fun character and her first meeting with Weston was pretty funny. Weston was a likable lead, I have noticed theres a lot of “royal” novels coming out and I love it. It’s a fun storyline. This reminded me a bit of the movie The Prince and I or even Roman Holiday. Another cute story.
My Best Man’s Wedding I’ve got a small confession… I am not a fan of the movie My Best Friend’s Wedding. Please don’t unfriend me. I am a fan of My Best Man’s Wedding though! I thought this was an adorable read, much better than the movie. For one thing, Jessica and Gentry have killer chemistry. They’ve been friends for a long time and have flirted a bit, but the past few months their feelings have started to grow into something more. Now *this* is my kind of “friends first” troupe. Maybe because it reminds me of how my husband and I started out. I liked that this retelling was similar to the movie, but the tweaks made it a much better version, IMO. Anyway, this was a fun read, really sucked me in and I enjoyed it from start to finish.
Content: Very mild religious tones - nothing at all preachy
While You Were Skiing This was super cute! I liked that is was similar to the movie, but the tweaks really made it unique and fun. Mia was a fun and likable character, stuck in a difficult position she tries to make the best of it. I thought Ryder and Carter were fun. I thought the end was a tad rushed, but really enjoyed the story and it’s one I would read again.
Content All five stories are clean romances (just kissing), no language or violence
WHAT IT'S ABOUT Silver Screen Kisses is a collection of stories inspired by movies from everyone’s favorite list. Written by award-winning and bestselling authors, these contemporary romances take the reader back to Echo Ridge in the spring, when the promise of new love is budding just like the tulips around the Emerald Inn Bed & Breakfast.
MY TAKE This book, inspired by various films was a delight. The characters were so fun and recognizing the little familiarities was a treat. Each took their own path and the romances were swoonworthy.
Silver Screen Kisses is a collection of short stories inspired by everyone’s favorite romantic movies. My Fair Lacey by Janette Rallison is a story based off the movie My Fair Lady. Lacey Johnson wants to open her own restaurant. She has a big dream and a big desire to make it a reality. She only lacks on major thing-money. Her problem is no one will take her seriously enough (due to her poor speech and laid-back attire) to give her a loan. Garrett Halifax, her roommates’ brother, volunteers to change her image. Lucey jumps at the opportunity. Besides, Garrett needs a project. Could he see Lucey for more than a project? I loved this cute twist. Lucey is so fun and does not see anything “wrong” with how she is. I really enjoyed watching her painfully transform into someone more sophisticated. Garret is so patient and kind. I love he always treated Lucey with respect. Their banter is hilarious. A very enjoyable read for Echo Ridge fans! You’ve Got Email by Heather Tullis Maria is a busy mother with two jobs and two boys. Never did she expect to fall in love with a complete stranger-especially one she has never met. Her friend and co-worker, Bret, is taking notice of Maria. He soon realizes she has a lot in common with a woman he’s been talking with online. Will they discover they are not strangers after all? What a cute adaptation of You’ve Got Mail. It is definately of my all-time favorite movies. I admire Maria’s love to her boys and her dedication to providing for them. She learns to trust and find happiness in her life. Bret is a super nice who continues to look out for her. The author hit this story spot on to the film. A very fun read! The Princess Bride of Riodan by Rachelle J. Christensen In a short twist on the movie, The Princess Bride, Elise is hired to redecorate the old Bed and Breakfast. When a mysterious man offers to help her she gladly accepts. After discovering who this mystery man truly is she does not know how to proceed. Her heart is already involved. Plus, to make things more confusing, her old high school crush wants a relationship. Who will Elise choose? I though this story was a cute read. The author tied in many direct quotes from the movie into the story. Elise worked hard and enjoyed her work as a decorator. One thing I loved about her is her ability to ramble. I relate to that (as you can tell by this review). This story was not my favorite but I still enjoyed it very much. My Best Man’s Wedding by Cami Checketts Jessica Porter vowed she would marry her best friend, Josh when she turned thirty. The problem is Josh is now engaged to be married. Determined to break up the wedding, Jessica enlists her handsome coworker, Gentry Trine, to help her y pretending to be engaged also. Little does Jessica know Gentry wants to win her over for more than a pretend engagement. Can Jessica figure out who is the right man? I haven’t seen the movie; My Best Friend’s Wedding, for years! It was fun to be reminded how cute a story it was while reading this twist. There were so many times I wanted to smack Jessica straight! Gentry, a true gentleman, who really knows how to make a girl feel special and loved. A fantastic read! While You Were Skiing by Lucy McConnell In the twist from While You Were Sleeping Mia Davis is thrown for a loop. While on her last day as lift operator, her crush, Ryder Montgomery, has a major accident. Before heading to the hospital he tells everyone he and Mia are engaged. Concerned about his head injury she plays along with the engagement. Things become even more complicated when his estranged family, her close friends, become involved. This was my favorite of all the stories in this anthology. I was a bit surprised because I am not a big fan of the movie. I laughed and cried in this book. Mia really gets herself in a bind living in her fantasy life with Ryder. I loved Ryder. He has a great sense of humor and is full of charm. I highly recommend this anthology and look forward to reading more about this fun town. *Please note I received a copy from the author in exchange for a review. All opinions are my own.

My comments will be in italics after each story synopsis.
My Fair Lacey by Janette Rallison Lacey Johnson has dreamed of opening a restaurant for years. All she needs is one little loan to make it happen.
This fun take on My Fair Lady was a lot of fun with the modern take on the classic story. I’ll admit, listening to Lacey talk at the beginning was painful! So job well done for Rallison. I also appreciated that even though Garrett was strict and worked Lacey hard while she was practicing her grammar, he was always nice to her. You get these little glimpses of how he might feel even though he’s trying to stay professional. There were many great things to enjoy in this story, but I don’t want to spoil any surprises.
You’ve Got Email by Heather Tullis Maria never expected to fall in love with a man she’d never met, but she can’t wait to get to her laptop every night to chat with Bobwhite67.
Brett is such a sweetie! I don’t know if I’ve ever watched the movie You’ve Got Mail, but I enjoyed this story between two people who have developed a relationship online. They’ve been attracted to each other in real life too, but always stayed apart out of shyness, or something. Anyway, I really liked how Brett handled the situation when the time came to meet and everything fell apart. Wise man!
The Princess Bride of Riodan by Rachelle J. Christensen When a mysterious man offers to help Elise redecorate the old Bed & Breakfast, she gladly hands him a wallpaper steamer. After she discovers his true identity, she doesn’t know whether to curtsy or run and hide. Unfortunately, hiding isn’t an option because her heart is already tangled up with the handsome prince. At the same time, Elise’s old crush from high school wants a relationship and she’s forced to decide whether to chase after a fairy tale ending or stay grounded in reality.
Another swoon worthy story. Elise is so cute and quirky with her non-stop talking. She’s honest to a fault and in the end that’s what saves her heart. Wes is the island god who steals her heart without even trying. I loved the characters and how they fit into the classic royal falls in love with commoner, feels betrayed by something, but all is right in the end trope. I loved that Christensen had them go watch Roman Holiday. That movie does not end well for the romantic of heart! It makes the bumbles and worries all the more pertinent to Elise’s situation.
Ah, finally we get Jessica and Gentry’s story. They’ve been around since the beginning of the Echo Ridge collections, and I was even happier to see they were meant for each other. Jessica’s best friend is getting married after a 2 week engagement and she’s determined to save him from it. For herself. Gentry sees his chance to get as close as possible to the woman who stole his heart, and hopefully convince her they belong together. I love Jessica’s confusion as the story progresses. Being a “change is hard” kind of person myself, I understand how someone can hold onto an idea for years with no basis in it being real or right. The end and the scramble to right everything is my absolute favorite part of the story.
Okay, While You Were Sleeping is one of my favorite Rom Coms. I loved the way McConnell twisted this one around a bit. Mia is sweet and loving, Ryder every bit as swoon worthy as she thinks. I loved how she referred to him as her Black Dimond man and all that implied. Both have good hearts and they just needed a chance to get together. Two rambunctious boys are just the ticket they need. Favorite part? Leaning. :) Whoo!
Getting lost in Echo Ridge was a great way to spend my weekend! I give the entire collection a 4.5 and clean rating.
1-5 scale and what it means: 1: I couldn’t even finish it / just plain bad 2: I hope I didn’t pay for this / disappointing 3: I didn’t hate it, but it was still missing something / forgettable but inoffensive 3.5: On the line between good and ok / like, not love 4: Solid mind candy / worth reading 4.5: So very close to perfection! / must read 5: I could not put it down and I’m still thinking about it! / a true treasure
Movie Ratings in relation to my review: Clean--Hallmark movies, some kissing, no nudity, no sex on or off "screen" PG--Some innuendo but nothing kids don't hear every day, sex is all closed door PG-13--some language (swear words not related to sex), more talk about sex, heavy petting, removal of clothing on screen, but sex is closed door. R--swearing (can be related to sex), feels like the whole story is about the sex and not the relationship or some other plot
This fun collection of stories is loosely based on popular movies with a fun, modern twist. All the stories are set in Echo Ridge and we are given a glimpse into the lives of the residents. I loved these stories about hardworking women and the men who love and appreciate them. In My Fair Lacey, Lacey Johnson dreams of opening a restaurant. But without a fancy degree or designer clothing, she cannot impress the lenders. She often feels like an imposter trying to act a part. Garrett is cynical and focused--on Lacey and on his dissertation. “Never commit to something when you have no idea what it’s going to involve.” She is downtown and he is uptown. Can opposites truly attract? Laugh along as Garrett transforms Lacey into a successful businesswoman. In You’ve Got Email, fun and flirty online conversations bring two people together. They maintain two separate relationships until they decide to meet. With debts and danger hanging over her head, Maria works frantically to keep her life in balance. Drawn by the promise of friendship and possible romance, she lets down her guard. Her little boys are darling and are part of some fun scenes. Bret sincerely wants to help Maria but all of his good intentions backfire. It was satisfying to watch this kind, caring man make things right. The many movie quotes woven into The Princess Bride of Riodan make this one of my favorite stories in this anthology. Prince Weston wasn’t looking to lose his heart when he escaped the scandal back home. This tall, dark, handsome and did I say rich man with a heart of gold just wants to serve his people and his country. But after watching Elise work three jobs, help her grandmother, and frantically try to save their house, Wes can’t resist rescuing this maiden in distress. “Different fish—same ocean.” When Jessica’s best friend and longtime crush announces his wedding plans, she panics and schemes to stop the wedding before it’s too late. Co-worker Gentry has abandoned his life as a player and transformed himself as a man of God. Pretending to be Jessica’s boyfriend is his way to get close to this woman he desires in My Best Man’s Wedding. While You Were Skiing is a train wreck romance with Mia Davis caught in a tangled web of lies while her “fiancé” Ryder Montgomery recovers from his injuries. Mia finds herself lying to her friends and family as she is torn between her loyalty to her family and the man she secretly loves. His tragic accident forces her into his corner and has her evaluating her priorities. “Love isn’t a matter of life and death.” *I received a copy of this collection in exchange for an honest review. These opinions are uniquely my own.
All of these stories were so much fun. I loved all of them. I love the town of Echo Ridge and all of the great characters that live there. These stories were all sweet, clean romances based on popular romantic movies and I feel like they each were very well done.
You've Got Email- 2.75 Stars, I had trouble getting into this one; it was okay.
The Princess Bride of Riodan, 4 Stars
My Best Man's Wedding- 4 Stars, Cute!
While You Were Skiing- 4.5 Stars! Really enjoyed this one! By far, my favorite of the set. This book will having you grin throughout most of it and chuckling out loud a few times. A dose of fun!
Romance, clean This was a fun group of novellas loosely based on films. The titles reflect the titles of films, but slightly changed to represent the characters in the novellas and the story lines. Loved the novellas, very cute! Will post a more detailed review shortly!
Amate i film romantici?
Un My Fair Lady contemporaneo in salsa culinaria. Adorabile e soprattutto esilarante.
Divertente, dolce, romantico. Ne voglio uno così anche io! *w*
Consigliato!
My Fair Lady is my favorite classic story. I LOVED this modern twist it so much. What a fun read! It is amazing what some nice clothes, a good hair style and better speech and do to make you feel better about yourself. When you self confidence goes up people are going to notice and that is exactly what happened here. I loved the ending as well. That is a new twist to the original story!
You’ve Got Email by Heather Tullis
This was such a fun novella. I loved getting to read Bret and Maria's story! Sometimes it is easier to communicate in writing. With technology the way it is these days and most people literally carry a computer around in their hand so a story about online chatting is perfect! Sometimes it's easier to show ourselves better when we aren't face to face. I have some friends that met online and thing have worked out great for them! I am glad that did in this case too. I love a good happily ever after!
The Princess Bride of Riodan by Rachelle J. Christensen
This was such a cute story. I know a lot of people have a fantasy about finding a real Prince but I have never felt that way Haha. I couldn't live that kind of life but it was fun to read about for sure! And in all honesty I have never read or seen the Princess bride. I guess I should probably do that sometime...... I would love the excuse to move to a tropical island though, I am still trying to figure that one out! Great addition to the set!
My Best Man’s Wedding by Cami Checketts
This one was awesome! It's a twist on The movie "My Best Friend's Wedding" and the Author does a great job at making it her own. Jessica has so much going for her but I think her confidence is lacking a little when she is trying to use her past as a fallback instead f moving forward with her life. Gentry was my favorite in this story. A confident go getter that knew what he wanted! Loved it. Another great story!
While You Were Skiing by Lucy McConnell
*Sigh* This one was my favorite of the set. I loved that it was the same story line as While You were sleeping but that the author put her own twist on it. I don't want to spoil it but it was a really good change from the original story. What an amazing ending to a great book!
Note I was gifted a copy of this book, but all opinions are my own.
I found the audiobook of this on my local library's digital app--Hoopla. I'd previously read three of the stories, but didn't own the collections that contained the other two. All of these stories are inspired by movies.
MY FAIR LACEY by Janette Rallison--Lacey Johnson wants to have her own restaurant but the bank turned her down for a loan. Her roommate's brother Garrett Halifax needs to do a dissertation and helping Lacey get a better job by changing the way she talks and dresses is going to be the topic of his dissertation.
Lacey is from a family that's never had a lot of money, but she's a wonderful person who's a hard worker and cares about her family so much that she dropped out of college when her father got cancer. She's very rough around the edges as far as speaking properly and doesn't care much about what she wears as long as it's modest and clean.
The story reminded me a lot of the TLC show What Not to Wear except this also included English and grammar lessons. Garrett is super sweet and shows a lot of patience with Lacey. As always Janette Rallison has some hilarious scenes and funny dialogue. I loved the story of Lacey's date with an out-of-towner, and the conversation at the art gallery when she confuses the word neophyte with nympho was priceless. You can't go wrong with a rags-to-riches type of story especially when it all works out for everyone in the end.
YOU'VE GOT EMAIL by Heather Tullis--Maria's a divorced mom of two young boys, basically working two full-time jobs--one at the bed and breakfast and the other at the diner--so she can pay off her lousy ex-husband's gambling debts. She really enjoys her evening online chats with Bobwhite67. Little does she know it's a local guy Bret, who she sees at the diner and around Echo Ridge. Bret thinks Maria is beautiful and works way too hard. When he and his chat room friend Zoomama start sharing personal tidbits, he notices similarities to Maria.
This was a fun story that shows how easy it is to share things and get along with someone online. Maria's a better woman than me because there's no way I'd have paid off an ex-husband's gambling debts. I would've turned over the threatning notes from the bookie over to the police. I didn't know how Bret was going to tell Maria he was Bobwhite67 once she went off on him at the Tulip festival for not minding his business. I don't blame him for being afraid to admit he had figured out she and Zoomama were the same person. Cute story where it all works out in the end. It also helps that Maria had some cute kids too.
THE PRINCESS BRIDE OF RIODAN by Rachelle J. Christensen--Elise Gibson needs money to help her Granny pay the back taxes on the house so she's taken on another job (this makes 3)--this one's at the Emerald Inn, the B&B in Echo Ridge. She's going to redecorate the basement and turn it into a home theater. While stripping the outdated wallpaper she meets Mr. Tall Dark & Handsome who's staying at the B&B. Elise has no idea he's Prince Weston Montoya of Riodan, a small island east of the Bermuda Triangle. Weston is there to get some time away from the mess his oldest brother has made and to work on a project to help his people continue to be self sufficient.
I liked how hard Elise worked, and how much she cared about her Granny. Speaking of Granny--she was a fun character. One of my favorite lines was when someone in the county assessor's office came to talk to her about her overdue property taxes. "You're a dear." Granny patted his cheek. "Now go on and ruin someone else's day." I laughed out loud. Weston is humble for a prince and really cares about people. If I would've known that I could meet a prince while removing wallpaper I would've tried that a long time ago. 😊 This is a clean romance with a lot of heart and sweet moments.
MY BEST MAN'S WEDDING by Cami Checketts--Jessica and Ross made a pack that they'd marry each other when they turned thirty. She hadn't heard from Ross for quite awhile when he calls to tell her he's met someone, they're engaged and getting married in Echo Ridge in a couple of weeks!! This can't be happening; she's got to stop this wedding, but how? She'll make Ross jealous by having her own fiancé when he gets in town. Where's she going to get a fake fiancé? Her gorgeous co-worker Gentry of course. They're friends and flirt a little at work; it'll be perfect.
Jessica doesn't seem to know that Gentry has developed feelings for her the past few months, which is probably why he agreed to pretend to be her fiancé. When Gentry kisses her--engaged couples do kiss, so they have to make it look real, right?--Jessica's not prepared for the things Gentry's kisses do to her. I did want to Gibbs-slap some sense into Jessica a couple of times. Seriously, she couldn't figure out Gentry had feelings for her and that Ross really loved his fiancée until she almost lost the friendship of both men? She kept telling herself that she and Ross didn't really have anything in common and men don't kiss you like Gentry kissed her unless their feelings are real. Thankfully Jessica woke up, sorted out her feelings and was able to make things right before it was too late.
WHILE YOU WERE SKIING by Lucy McConnell--This would make a great romantic comedy. Mia Davis is a liftie at the Ruby Mountain Ski Resort and secretly has a thing for the gorgeous Ryder Montgomery. When he falls from the ski lift and tells everyone they're engaged Mia goes along thinking he'll clear things up when he regains consciousness, but he doesn't. A cute story about a couple who secretly have a thing for each other and get engaged before they start dating. Lots of funny dialogue. "She wasn't quite sure how to explain that when he went up the hill he was a near stranger and now he thought he loved her. Never mind the sense she had that she loved him too. They could get a two-for-one deal on head scans."
This is a series of short stories based on great chick flick movies. All are contemporary and clean. Some good some better. My Fair Lacey by Janette Rawlinson is 1st. Its the story of a makeover. Love these. This one starts out great and goes strong and has a great ending. 2nd You've got Email by Heather Tullis. This doesn't have a light feel and is a little unrealistic.. It ended abruptly but was ok. 3rd is the Princess Bride of Riodan by Rachelle Christensen. More a christen romance praying but not preaching. A bit cheesy but a fun read. 4th My Best Mans Wedding by Cami checketts This one was sweet. Much better then the movie. The set up in the beginning of the characters did not match to who they actually were and this threw me off a bit. It was a little odd. It ended great. 5th is While you Were Skiing. By Lucy McConnell. Nothing can top this movie so my excitement was low. I didn't really like it much:/ The characters had little interaction and it was unbelievable. And just a bit odd.
A delicious romp down memory lane with twists and turns that will keep you up until you finish this gem! I love the setting of Echo Ridge and the good people that live and work there. Each story was a fun and swoon worthy take on some of the best romance movies out there. It was so fun revisiting those great classics, that I think a binge movie marathon is in order ;)
My fair Lacey- Wow! Ms Rallison does it again. Spunky and determined heroine. Hunky and sweet Hero. She didn't need rescuing, but Garrett was there to perfectly help guide her through her My Fair Ladyish transition. A beautiful story about bettering yourself without losing sight of who you really are. Fantastic kisses and great chemistry that left me with a big smile and a little sigh...
You've Got Email- A hard working mama looking for love in all the right places. An adorable story about second chance love and going after what you truly want. A heartwarming story that reminds you to never give up on love, that there really are great guys out there, and that sometimes you need to look closely at what's below the surface:)
The Princess Bride of Riodan- Yum. What girl doesn't want her own handsome Prince? Fun and flirty retelling of one of the most quoted love stories of all time. It was genius the way those quotes kept popping up in the middle of a really great figure-out-who-you-really-are story. I'm thinking of moving to Riodan myself:)
My Best Man's Wedding- I LOVE a girl who goes after what she wants and a hunky guy who's willing to let her figure that out. Beautiful retelling without the pain inflicted by Julia Roberts, this story oozes with characters you grow to love and would want for friends. All the toe curling kissing scenes didn't hurt my love for this story a bit :)
While You Were Skiing- This is going to be a fan favorite! Who doesn't want a gorgeous man looking at them with that dreamy look of love? (that was rhetorical of course) What a day it is to have a girl be the Hero of her own story. I loved the way Mia kept plowing through day by day and tried to always do the right thing. Having to choose between love and a family is never easy. If only we could have it all. A romantic retelling with a twist that made me tear up and giggle all at once:)
Simply a solid five stars for this romance junkie:)
Silver Screen Kisses: Echo Ridge Anthology - PG Violence: no Language: nothing inappropriate Sex: none. Some kissing
My Fair Lacey - 4 stars You've Got Email - 3.5 stars The Princess Bride of Riodan - 5 stars but definitely needs proofreading help. My Best Man's Wedding - 3 stars While You Were Skiing - 3 stars Cute romance anthology with very vague tie-ins to movies. Good if you need a pick-me-up!
Silver Screen Kisses is the third installment to the Echo Ridge Romance series and is a collection of five stories.
The stories are inspired by movies and include: My Fair Lacey by Jeanette Rallison You've Got Mail by Heather Tullis The Princess Bride of Riodan by Rachelle J Christensen My Best Man's Wedding by Cami Checketts While You Were Skiing by Lucy McConnell
I like all of these stories in this collection. They are fun, sweet, clean, and romantic. I found several new to me authors that I will be looking forward to reading more of in the future.
Five stars
I received this book from one of the authors but was not required to write a review. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.
This is such a fun set! I love the way that the town of Echo Ridge seems to jump off the pages with all of it's inhabitants. I really loved the whole movie theme with this one. The authors did an amazing job of picking movies that everyone has seen and loved, making the whole thing even more amazing!
Let's talk just a little bit about each of the novellas that make up this set.
First up, My Fair Lacey by Janette Rallison. Oh my goodness, I loved this one! I loved Lacey. She's a young woman trying to do her best to achieve her dreams. She really wants to have her own restaurant. She's found one she can buy, but no one is willing to lend her the money for it. Enter Garrett Halifax, he's her roommate's brother and he's sure that he can help Lacey get the loan she needs. He simply needs to get her to dress better, and talk better. I loved the way that Garrett goes about helping her in this one. And I really loved the things that Lacey was thinking about him as he helps her. She starts off seriously annoyed at him all the time. But I loved the way he grew on her. And I really loved how he stood up for her when he didn't have to. Such a great way to start the set!
Next is You've Got Email by Heather Tullis. I really loved Maria in this one. I loved her sense of duty and honor, she's working so hard at two jobs to keep herself and her two sons afloat all while also paying back her ex-husband's gambling debts. Holy cow! There's no way I'd pay off anyone's gambling debts, but I can see why she felt she had to to protect herself and her sons. I thought it was so fun that she's emailing back and forth with a man she's never met, and of course, it ends up being someone she already knows. I loved Bret. I loved the way he tried to watch out for and help Maria out, especially after he found out that his online friend was Maria. This one is really cute too!
Then there's The Princess Bride of Riodan by Rachelle J Christensen. This one was so fun too! I loved Elise in this one. She is also a hard worker, she's trying to make it so that her grandma doesn't lose the house she lives in just because they can't afford to pay the property tax. So, as a second job, she's helping to redecorate the movie theater room in the bed and breakfast. This involves taking down the horrible wallpaper and that's when she meets a mysterious man, who turns out to be a prince. I love the way that Elise is conflicted in this one. She's not sure if she really wants to be princess of Riodan, everyone knows their family and she knows she'd spend the rest of her life in the limelight. She just needs to listen to her heart. This one might have been my favorite of the bunch!
Next is Cami Checketts' My Best Man's Wedding. I loved this one as well! I love Jessica and Gentry, we've seen them in other Echo Ridge books and I love that we get to see their story play out her. Jessica has been half planning to marry her dear friend Josh when they turn 30. But now Josh is getting married and Jessica has no idea what to do...except break up the wedding. That's where Gentry comes in. He offers to help Jessica by playing the role of her fiance and make Josh see that he really wants to marry Jessica. But we all know by now that that's never really what happens. This is such a cute story!
And last, but not least is Lucy McConnell's While You Were Skiing. This one is really amazing. I love the movie While You Were Sleeping, and I thought the author did an amazing job recreating this one with Echo Ridge in mind. Mia has been working as a lift operator at the Ruby Mountain Resort, it's her last day and her crush Ryder gets knocked off the ski lift by a couple of teenagers messing around. When the paramedics come to pick him up to take him to the hospital, he tells them that he and Mia are engaged and then promptly goes unconscious. I love that even though Mia is uncertain what to do about the situation, she works hard to take care of Ryder and make it look as though they really are engaged. This gets a little tricky when she ends up going on a few dates with his brother and his brother has no idea what's going on. This is a really fun book!
Make sure you grab this whole set, you'll love every page just like I did!
“Silver Screen Kisses: An Echo Ridge Anthology” examines the lives of five ladies in the town and follows them in their search for love, even when they themselves think they are looking for something else.
Each of the five novellas in this collection is inspired by a movie, which is a fun way of revisiting favorite movies with a fresh take.
My Fair Lacey by Janette Rallison Lacey Johnson is shot down when she tries to get a loan to open a restaurant. In exchange for being the subject of his dissertation, Garrett will teach Lacey proper grammar, supply her with a business-appropriate wardrobe, and help her do networking in order to increase her chances of getting her loan. But the more time she spends with Garrett, the more Lacey realizes she wants more from him than just to be her business coach. Can he ever see her as more than his project?
This twist on My Fair Lady is funny--everything I've ever read by Janette Rallison makes me laugh, and this story didn't disappoint. And (SLIGHT SPOILER), I liked how Garrett proves he doesn't like Lacey just because she has changed but that he liked her all along.
You've Got Email by Heather Tullis Maria has been instant messaging a guy that she really clicks with. However, with a super busy schedule (she's a single mom working two jobs to try to pay of her ex's gambling debts) and having been burned in the past, she's hesitant to meet her online pal. Bret is enjoying his conversations with Maria--and when he figures out that the online girl is Maria, who he's been interested in for awhile, he really wants to make things work. But Maria doesn't always seem to like him in real life, and he's not sure how to tell her the truth. Loved the premise, didn't love the execution. This one didn't feel as smooth to me. Still a good read, just not as entertaining as the other stories in the collection.
The Princess Bride of Riodan by Rachelle J. Christensen Elise is redecorating the theater room of the local B&B, where she meets handsome Wes, not realizing initially who he is--a prince from the island of Riodan. Once she does realize who he is, she can't believe that, despite the instant connection between them, that there's any way she and Wes can make things work, so when Billy, her high school crush, asks her out, she wonders if she'd be better off going for the local guy who won't have to return home to his kingdom someday. Elise is funny; I love how she just blurts things out. Wes is pretty dreamy. There were a couple times when I felt like the references to The Princess Bride were a little awkward but there were other times when they were really funny. It made me want to go re-watch the movie to see what other references I might have missed.
My Best Man's Wedding by Cami Checketts Jessica and Josh promised they'd marry each other if they weren't married when they turned 30, and Jessica wasn't expecting Josh to call shortly before they turn 30 to say that he's getting married. Jessica is certain Marcella can't be the girl for Josh--because SHE is. Her co-worker Gentry convinces her to have him pose as her fiancé to make Josh jealous--at least, that's what Jessica thinks the plan is. Really, Gentry is hoping that Jessica, who he's fallen in love with, will forget about Josh and see that Gentry is the one for her. I think this was my favorite of the collection. I just loved seeing how Gentry cared about Jessica and how he well he treated her. Marcella was funny, and this story was well-written and a lot of fun. I liked this version better than I liked the movie.
While You Were Skiing by Lucy McConnell Mia is running a ski lift when Ryder falls off and is injured. When he temporarily regains consciousness, he comments that he was going to marry her, and the rumor that she's his fiancee spreads. Mia doesn't know why he said that or what to do when he wakes up again and acts like he likes her, especially since she's good friends with his estranged family and he doesn't want them to know about his accident. Mia feels disloyal to his family and confused about what Ryder is doing and why. Loosely based on While You Were Sleeping, this was another fun story, with some plot twists to take it in a different direction than the movie. I liked seeing the developing romance.
I loved the idea that each novella being inspired by a movie; that was super fun and I'd love to see more of that in the future. It was a great way to revisit and re-imagine some favorite movies.
I received a free copy of the book. All opinions are my own.
I simply love reading adaptations. Although I usually focus on fairytales, I enjoy classic books and popular movies being rewritten in a new way. This Anthology doesn't disappoint.
Every single one of the stories are creative, entertaining, and definitely worth the read. They are not an obvious movie to book writing either. They each have a uniqueness all on their own that sets it apart from the movie they are adapted from.
I loved reading all of the stories. It was also fun to see familiar characters and/or locations pop up throughout the anthology. I don't usually read anthologies but this made me want to try them out more. Very well done! A must read!
My Fair Lacey by Janette Rallison
I found this to be an excellent adaptation. I have family members who hate "My Fair Lady" because of the type of man Mr. Higgins was in his actions and behaviors. This did not have that problem. I enjoyed the characters and their growth throughout the book. The ending was unexpected and a great laugh. Fantastic!
You’ve Got Email by Heather Tullis
I had to ask my husband about the movie because I thought I may have confused movies. There were elements that were different between movie and book, but I really liked this adaptation. It was wonderful to see the different relationships between the main and minor characters. I like how he worked to get into her good graces. Always a classic love story!
The Princess Bride of Riodan by Rachelle J. Christensen
This story really enjoys incorporating the popular movie quotes right into the characters' dialogue. And since I am a Princess Bride fan, I noticed most (of not all) of them. I would not call this an adaptation of The Princess Bride because it wasn't based off the plot of the movie. But it was a really fun read with the movie quotes. It had great characters that kept me reading to learn more about them.
My Best Man’s Wedding by Cami Checketts
I thought this was such a sweet story. Even though the main character kept saying she would break up the wedding, she never did anything about it. I don't know if its because of the character's personality or the author not wanting the reader to dislike her for any of the actions she could have done. It is just always nice to see the right people ending up together. This story did a great way of showing how some people just belong together and others can see it.
While You Were Skiing by Lucy McConnell
I enjoyed this adaptation! It was like the movie, but not like the movie. I think it had some of the great parts of the movie, but also had some wonderful parts that were unique to the book. It's always nice to be tricked when reading an adaptation. It's not fun to read a book if you know exactly what is going to happen.
My Fair Lacey--As always, Janette Rallison's writing cracked me up. I love reading her books for the tremendous humor as well as the sizzling romance. This My Fair Lady knockoff has great characters and a fantastically tight and twisty plot. Loved every minute of it.
You've Got Email was good set up and looked to be suspenseful. I wondered how the characters were going to get themselves out of the situation, but then it just...fizzled. Missed opportunity for great suspense and relationship building.
The Princess Bride of Riodan--Oh my. Such good characters! Elise, the heroine, was a little bland but I found myself rooting for her anyway. LOVED the inclusion of iconic Princess Bride lines and the fantastic way they were worked into the dialogue in situations that had nothing to do with the movie.
My Best Man's Wedding--So, the best man came out of nowhere, but the guy friend and the romance sizzled. Loved that the heroine got over herself quickly and followed her generous heart. Good read.
While You Were Skiing--This was a great story. Characters had depth, the plot was well done without being a carbon copy of the inspiration movie, and I actually wasn't sure who was going to get the girl at first. Loved the inclusion of the WYWS lines and actions (post it notes for important documents FTW!). Adorable story.
I loved how the stories tied each other together, but stood well on their own. They were all clean reads that still had smoldering romances. Well done anthology. I highly recommend it.
(The rating was based on the top rating for individual stories in the book)
First off, I want to say that the Echo Ridge anthology books are so fun. I love the way the characters in the stories interact with characters from the other stories by authors.
My Fair Lacey - 5 stars - What can I say? this was a fantastic retelling of the classic. Ms. Rallison did a great job of transforming Lacey via Garrett, who was just the best!
You've Got Email - 5 stars - Another sweet story. Bret was such a great guy, and I loved the way he was so persistent in pursuing Maria and how he was so patient and forgiving towards her.
The Princess Bride of Riodan - 4 stars - The story was pretty good - but it felt like it tried a little too hard to fit the movie, but didn't quite make it. The quotes from the movie, while fun, didn't quite fit in all the places they were used. I think I would have liked it better as a rewrite of Roman Holiday, which was alluded to in the story
My Best Man's Wedding - 4 1/2 stars - Gentry was amazing, Jessica was kinda blind. I'm glad he persisted despite that.
While You Were Skiing - 5 stars - When I started this story, I was very curious how in the world the author would be able to twist this one. She did a great job and wrote a very fun, touching story.
A very sweet collection of short love stories which borrow plots and iconic dialogue from our favorite RomComs.
The authors - Janette Rallison, Lucy McConnell, Cami Checkers, Heather Tullis and Rachel J. Christenson - are known for kisses-only romance writing. They each took a couple from the fictional Echo Ridge ski town in upstate New York. Main characters occasionally make cameos in one another's novels, but not in chronological order according to their own plot progression. The stories do share local businesses, festivals and a few secondary character.
I liked some of the books more than others. Coincidentally, they were based on a couple of my favorite RomComs, "You've Got Mail" and "While you were Sleeping." A close runner up was the story based on "My Fair Lady," written by Janette Rallison; I've read a few of her books lately and was searching my library for her audiobooks when I found this anthology. I didn't care for the books based on "The Princess Bride" and "My Best Friend's Wedding," which are movies I didn't care for enough to watch more than once.
If you're looking for clean audiobooks with notes of faith, I'd recommend this one, which is available for download at the King County Library System.
This was such a fun collection! But then, I'm nerdy and draw parallels to movies and other nonsense in my daily life anyway so... reading stories that follow a familiar movie plot line wasn't outside the realm of imagination. In fact, it was really exciting.
My Fair Lacey made me laugh out loud. It was so much fun for a long-time favorite of mine to be modernized. It also did a great job of sticking to the story line of the original without feeling like it was bound by the plot line. I enjoyed You've Got Email but I felt there could have been more to the story if the characters weren't constricted by trying to stick so close to the plot. That said, it was very cute and romantic. The Princess Bride of Riodan was fantastic. I personally have only see the movie once but hear it quoted constantly and so the familiar lines that were thrown into the book made me roll my eyes. It didn't stop me from enjoying the story, though. I really really enjoyed My Best Man's Wedding. It was familiar and playful and fun yet felt fresh and new. The same can be said of While You Were Skiing - a little different ending than what you'd expect but authentic and with great characters.
I would give this four stars just for the last story, "While You Were Skiing" by Lucy McConnell. "While You Were Sleeping" is one of my all-time favorite movies, and McConnell did a great job keeping the feel and humor and charm of the movie while giving it her own twist with a retelling. Other favorites were "My Fair Lacey" by Janette Rallison (based on "My Fair Lady") and "My Best Man's Wedding" by Cami Checketts ("My Best Friend's Wedding," which I've actually never seen). Anyway, this anthology was a fun idea--taking well-known and beloved rom-com movies and giving them a retelling. The community the authors developed and shared was fun, though I wish the stories had been arranged in chronological order; it was confusing that one story would be in June, then the next would be in March, or whatever.
This was a fun anthology of novellas patterned after some very quotable romance films. My Fair Lady, The Princess Bride, You’ve Got Mail, My Best Friend’s Wedding and While You were Sleeping serve as inspiration for the stories in this collection. While none of the stories follow the movies exactly, savvy readers and movie buffs will likely catch the references and quotes scattered through the novellas. Each story takes about as long to read as watching one of the films, and I would say they each have a comparable depth to them.
If you have enjoyed the movies I mentioned, you will likely also enjoy these novellas. The collection makes it a great value and a great way to explore these authors.
What a great group of stories! Loved them all. It has been a while since I visited Echo Ridge. I enjoyed visiting this wonderful town through the eyes of these talented authors. Thanks for the town updates!
This was a cute collection of romance novellas that all take place in the same town which fun because the characters weave in and out of the stories. This particular collections contained stories that were all retellings of popular movies which was also fun.
This was a cute book. I sort of spaced it out, reading a story in between other books, but each story was cute. My favorites were the two last ones, though... :)
