Schon zu Schulzeiten veröffentlichte er seine Comics in selbstverlegten Fanzines und Anthologien und begann nach dem Abitur ein Grafikdesign-Studium an der Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weissensee, wo er mit anderen Gleichgesinnten die Comicgruppe Monogatari gründete.
Während des Studiums entstand das erste längere Album “Strandsafari” (2002 bei Schwarzer Turm) mit Mawils Alter Ego, einem bebrillten Hasen. Ein Jahr später diplomierte er mit “Wir können ja Freunde bleiben”, einer tragikomischen autobiografischen Erzählung über Mädchengeschichten, mit dem er 2003 zu Reprodukt wechselte. Seitdem pendelt Mawil ständig zwischen beiden Genres.
Seine nachfolgenden Bücher “Die Band” (2004), “Das große Supa-Hasi-Album” (2005), “Meister Lampe” (2006) und “Action Sorgenkind” (2007) erschienen in den USA, England, Spanien, Frankreich, Polen und Tschechien, seine Kurzgeschichten in Magazinen wie “Strapazin”, “Stripburger”, “Renate” und “Moga Mobo”.
Mawil gibt Workshops, signiert und stellt auf den einschlägigen internationalen Comicfestivals aus und zeichnet monatlich einen grossformatigen Comic für die Sonntagsbeilage des Berliner “Tagesspiegels”. Und wenn dann noch Zeit bleibt, arbeitet er im BerlinComix-Atelier, das er sich mit den Kollegen Andreas Michalke, Reinhard Kleist, Naomi Fearn und Fil teilt, an einem neuen Buch. Nunca tinha lido nada do Lucky Luke, só sabia que era um cowboy que andava de cigarro na boca que, com o saneamento dos tempos atuais, foi substituído por uma erva/palha, o que, pensando bem não faz muito sentido, já que há ervas que se fumam. Assim, continua a incentivar ao tabagismo, não? :D
Esta história foi escrita por Mawil, um amante de bicicletas, daí não ser estranho este título. Eu, que sou uma turista de duas rodas, fiquei logo encantada. É muito engraçado ver o nosso cowboy a trocar o Jolly por um "burro de ferro". O Jolly é que já não achou assim tanta piada. Foi uma leitura muito divertida.
Esta história foi escrita por Mawil, um amante de bicicletas, daí não ser estranho este título. Eu, que sou uma turista de duas rodas, fiquei logo encantada. My first encounter with the famous cowboy, Lucky Luke, was through a story written and illustrated by a different author than the original creator.
This volume is part of a tribute collection dedicated to the legendary cowboy, and I must say, I enjoyed it more than I expected. The plot, though simple, is engaging, filled with humor, amusing characters, and entertaining interactions, all while weaving in some interesting historical facts.
I’m now hooked and eager to dive into the next volumes of the collection. Who knows? By the end, Lucky Luke might just have gained a new fan.

Cute. Yes there are cliches and stereotypes about the Old West of the USA. But cute all the same. Plus, a velocipede race! Probably my first exposure to Lucky Luke shouldn't be from this one, but so it goes.

This 2019 entry is quite a downfall on the artistic side of the long running 'Lucky Luke' series. The scrawls are more underground, untrained than competent in storytelling, which this struggles greatly. Why on earth hand a volume of this series to someone who openly declares he can't draw horses? Not only is, Luke's horse, 'Jolly Jumper' a co-star, but this volume includes pages of bison drawings that appear to be drawn by a 5 year old. The artwork is horrible. Especially compared to the rich illustration of volumes going back to 1946. The real blame of this goes to the publishers, who brought in the artist.
The story is good. Set in actual history, even better. The fictional turn of the history is a great devise that I employ myself. It's sad the artwork is so poor and, worse, the disastrous effort to relay the story artistically.
Bottom line: I don't recommend this book. 3 out of ten points.

Mein letztes Lucky Luke-Comic muss ich gelesen haben, als ich etwa so 14/15 Jahre alt war. Noch früher hatte ich ein paar der Trickfilme gesehen. Aber richtig eingestiegen bin ich in die Serie nie. Was wohl daran lag, dass diese Reihe mir bald ein wenig zu kindisch erschienen ist.
Dass ich mir jetzt doch wieder einen Lucky Luke-Band gekauft habe, ist allein dem Umstand geschuldet, dass er von Mawil gezeichnet und getextet worden ist. Wie schon bei Flix‘ Hommage an Spirou war das für mich ein Pflichtkauf, denn ich halte Mawil für den besten zeitgenössischen deutschen Comiczeichner.
Mawil gelingt mit seinem Band „Lucky Luke sattelt um“ eine gelungene Weiterführung des gewohnten Lucky Luke-Konzepts.
Die Geschichte ist schnell erzählt. Lucky Luke rettet Albert Overman bei einem Überfall durch das Gangsterpärchen Smith & Wesson (!!) das Leben. Sie haben es auf ein Paket von Overman abgesehen, dass dieser nach San Francisco bringen will. Wie sich bald herausstellt, handelt es sich dabei um ein neuartiges Teil namens Fahrrad, Tretrad oder Drahtesel. Über den Großteil der Geschichte sitzt Lucky Luke auf dem Teil, was wiederum Jolly Jumper in den Wahnsinn treibt.
Mawil macht aus diesen drei Handlungssträngen eine spannungs- und actiongeladene Verfolgungsjagd, die alles aufbietet, was man sich an Wild West-Klischees wünscht. An mancher Stelle überdreht er ein wenig, aber das stört nicht weiter.
Wie von Mawil gewohnt, sind die Zeichnungen bis ins allerletzte Detail herzallerliebst, so dass man jedes einzelne Panel lange betrachtet und sich an jeder noch so kleinen Anspielung erfreut.
Alles in allem eine gute Investition für eine kurzweilige Lektüre an einem Sonntagnachmittag.

'Lucky Luke Saddles Up' with art and script by Mawil finds our iconic and comedic Western hero in possession of a new form of travel.
When Lucky Luke takes a train ride, he meets Albert Overman who has invented a new type of bicycle that he is taking to the 1st Columbia San Francisco Bicycle Race. Lucky Luke is curious about the contraption and saves it from a couple thugs out to take it. Luke finds himself on a madcap dash across the West, much to the detriment of his beloved horse.
Lucky Luke has been around a while and the stories are filled with lots of stereotypes. Some of those start to feel a bit cringeworthy here. It's a fun story, but I miss the more classic looking Lucky Luke artwork.

Gostei da arte conceptual do artista, diferente dos desenhos de Morris e daquilo a que estamos habituados na série original de Lucky Luke (e é esse o objectivo desta colecção intitulada Lucky Luke visto por..., ou então não teriam sido escolhidos artistas muito particulares para ela, como é o caso de Ralf König, só para dar um exemplo).
No entanto, achei a história descabida. É óbvio que a BD é uma óptima plataforma de criação imaginativa onde tudo pode acontecer... Mas este argumento tornou-se a determinada altura disparatado demais. Talvez com uma outra economia narrativa fosse nse tornasse bastante melhor do que aquilo que acabei por achar... Em todo o caso, é divertido e não se perde nada em ler este livro...

I Lucky Luke sadlar om räddar vår sjungande cowboy den lätt nervöse uppfinnaren Albert Overman från att bli rånad av två hyrda småskurkar vid namn Smith och Wesson. Det visar sig att denne Overman är i desperat behov av att lyckas med marknadsföringen av sin säkerhetscykel eftersom den storkapitalistiske höghjulingstillverkaren Albert Augustus Pope effektivt sätter käppar i hans hjul (ursäkta ordvitsen). Overmans plan är att resa till San Francisco för att delta i en ny stor cykeltävling och där visa upp fördelarna med hans nya modell för allmänheten. Lucky Luke lovar att hjälpa till men är knappast förberedd på alla knasiga förvecklingar under resan eller exakt vad det är för ett märkligt transportmedel som Overman har med sig och det gäller inte minst Lukes trogna gamla vän Jolly Jumper som inte uppskattar att Luke verkar föredra en ”järnåsna” framför en ståtlig vit springare.
Mawli har skapat ett härligt äventyr tecknat i en personlig stil som kanske inte alla Lucky Luke-fans kommer att gilla men som jag uppskattar. Tanken med dessa extraordinära äventyr är ju personlig frihet med själva konceptet och karaktärerna och det lyckas Mawli med och detta dessutom med råge. Som kutym är så innehåller albumet verkliga ingredienser från tiden när det begav sig och både Overman och hans konkurrent Pope är högst verkliga personer som på var sitt håll kämpade för att göra cykeln oumbärlig för det amerikanska folket. Hela äventyret har glimten i ögat kryddat med en rejäl portion komisk timing och Lucky Luke sadlar om rekommenderas varmt till både cykelentusiaster och Lucky Luke-älskare.

I was so excited to see that someone made a remake of Lucky Luke. I loved the original Lucky Luke comics of Morris while growing up. Unfortunately this edition didn't meet my expectations. |
There are comics that are a totally different spin on the original, this is not such a comic. It is also not a new idea in the same trend as the original. This comic is trying to do the latter, but unfortunately missed the mark. The main issue I have is that is missing the essential parts of a Lucky Luke comic. Lucky Luke and especially Jolly Jumper are far apart from the original idea from Morris. It will not feel familiar for the lovers of the original comic, which is (I guess) the intended audience.
Besides that, the plot feels rushed through. The comic is fairly short but it feels like the author was just done with it and wanted it to end. Things are just rushed by, while things that could have been shorter are stretched.
I'm also not a particular fan of the art style, but that is personal taste and someone else can love it. In the end, it was just ok which results in 1,5 stars. The comic is not terrible, it was easy to go through but it was also not rememerable and not something that I would pick up again. Most of the originals I read about 10 times and every time I discover something else in the story.

Disappointing Old West road trip adventure.
Lucky Luke makes the acquaintance of bicycle innovator Albert Overman (a real historical figure) when he saves Overman from two outlaws named Smith and Wesson. Overman is on his way to San Francisco to enter a bicycle race hosted by competitor Albert A. Pope (another real person).
A series of blunders and mishaps results in a slapstick cross-country adventure featuring missed connections, mistaken identities, and silly situations. Luke, separated from his horse, makes the trek on this newfangled bicycle contraption with the two outlaws in hot pursuit. Overman follows along behind with Luke's horse Jolly Jumper and a mysterious stranger.
Two things I enjoyed. That there was an Apache brave named 'Downward-Facing-Dog' and when one character referred to the bicycle as a "wire-donkey". Other than that the whole thing was... entirely forgettable and underwhelming.
I didn't care much for the art or the plot. Just not for me.

Der Fortschritt macht auch vor Lucky Luke nicht Halt und so sieht er sich auf ein Fahrrad angewiesen. Ganz zum Unglück von Jolly Jumper.
Die Geschichte ist echt witzig und sie wird nur noch besser dadurch, dass Mawil einfach keine Pferde zeichnen kann.

(PT) Lucky Luke salva um homem de ser assaltado, e este tem uma misteriosa caixa nas suas mãos. Quando descobre o seu conteúdo, fica espantado com ela, mas está determinado em levá-la ao seu destino, contra todos os obstáculos, incluindo o mais inesperado: Jolly Jumper.
"Lucky Luke muda de sela" é mais um dos álbuns feitos em homenagem à personagem criada por Morris em 1947. Desta vez é o alemão Mawill que o desenha, e aqui, assiste-se à transição do cowboy do cavalo para a bicicleta, que no final do século XIX se tornou num fenómeno nas estradas americanas. A saga de Luke para levar a bicicleta para São Francisco, onde há uma corrida, um homem que quer fazer de tudo para que a nova invenção não lá chegue, contratando... um casal de bandidos para o impedir, e as paisagens do Oeste - os desertos, os nativos, as manadas de bisontes, o comboio transcontinental e um misterioso homem cuja identidade será descoberta no final e será um inesperado aliado - faz deste álbum, mais do que a homenagem a uma personagem, também é a homenagem ao Velho Oeste que entrou na imaginação de muitos ao longo de gerações. Como o próprio Lucky Luke.

Lucky Luke na siodełku jest dziełem, którym Mawil (scenarzysta) starał się oddać hołd komiksowej legendzie. Od pierwszych stron fabuła prezentuje się dosyć obiecująco. Przewracając kolejne strony komiksu, znajdziemy tam wartką przygodę, liczne zwroty akcji, groźnych bandytów, stróżów prawa, dzikich Indian i całkiem wyrazistą dawkę humoru. Czyli wszystko to, co powinno znaleźć się w albumie tego typu.
Można by było napisać, że jest dobrze, pojawia się jednak pewne dosyć duże “ale”. Twórca otrzymał całkowicie wolną rękę w procesie tworzenia swojego dzieła. Postanowił on to wykorzystać i podejść do znanego bohatera z zupełnie innej strony. W tym tkwi największy problem tytułu. Pod względem czysto rozrywkowym albumowi nie można niczego poważniejszego zarzucić. Nie znajdziemy tutaj jednak typowego ducha/klimatu znanego z klasycznych prac Morrisa. Równie dobrze głównym bohaterem mógłby być zupełnie inny kowboj.

Glimrende hyldest til Lucky Luke. Jeg er vild med, at han svinger sig i sadlen på en cykel som en cowboy i det vilde vest (ubevidst er det jo nærmest en hyldest til salig Povl Kjøller), og at Jolly Jumper bliver jaloux over det.
Hvis du mener, at kun Morris og Goscinny kan lave Lucky Luke, vil dette album ikke ændre din mening, da stregen er markant anderledes, men det er altså heller ikke en officiel Lucky Luke-historie. Det er en hyldest, og hvis du er bare en smule åben, er det en skøn historie!

Everything about this was bad. The art is terrible. I needed context clues from the story to realize one of the villains was a woman. The art was so goofy and poor I couldn't tell. The story is dumb. It's goofy wannabe slapstick about a cowboy trying to get the first bicycle across the Old West to San Francisco for a race. Meanwhile the whole time is horse is jealous and he's pursued by two idiot henchpeople. Every character in the book is a stereotype. It's just 100% awful all around.

Alles in allem ein gelungener Band mit zahlreichen guten Ideen und einer Geschichte, die zumindest in den Grundzügen historische Wurzeln hat.
Der Zeichenstil wiederum ist gewöhnungsbedürftig, besonders wenn Mawil seinen eigenen Stil bei den handlungstragenden Personen einbringt - siehe die Schurken 'Smith & Wesson' und Jolly Jumper.

Mawilova verzija zgodbe o Srečnem Luki :) Nisem nekej bral originalnih stripih, ma je mawil in je super zgodba :) Pismo, všeč mi je vse kar nardi!
Kok mi je všeč kako riše, prov res. Posebej pokrajine tko fino naredi, s čist preprostimi čačkami in hitro linijo, ma zgleda vse tko mehko in zaobljeno :)

Hab viel gelacht und die Zeichnungen gefallen mir besser als das Original! Das einzige was mir aufgestoßen hat, waren die racial slurs. Bei so einer modernen Hommage überraschend. Auch wenn einige Witze über das Verhältnis Siedler vs. Natives das auflockern (sollen?), hinterlassen die veralteten, abwertenden Begriffe trotzdem einen faden Geschmack.

Mai 2022. J’aime les dessins (d’où le 3 étoiles) et le scénario aurait pu être franchement bien mais il y a une certaine confusion dans tout ça.
Beaucoup de clichés. Quelques traits d’humour qui tombent à plat.

Une revisite du mythe de Lucky Luke en version grand public, qui se veut un peu "décalée", même si le vélo a été inventé à la fin du 19eme siècle, donc ce n'est pas complètement un objet moderne dans le far west comme on pourrait le penser de prime abord.
Luke doit donc traverser les états unis sur ce vélo, il y a plein d'aventures, c'est dynamique, plutôt fun sans être incontournable non plus. Pour les grands et les petits sans aucun problème, ça se lit bien, il se passe plein de choses et c'est agréable. C'est déjà pas si mal .. ?

A comic that was too out there for me. I don't mind a bit of knockabout humour, but this had too much, from talking horses to a completely convoluted plot involving a brand new style of bicycle. It tries to take some of the Asterix sensibility and put it in the American Midwest, but its rootin' tootin' wordiness and peculiar bits didn't look as if they'd gel with the target audience.
