My name's Heidi Rice, I'm a USA Today Bestselling author. I'm married with two sons (which gives me rather too much of an insight into the male psyche!).

I love my job because it involves sitting down at my computer and getting swept up in a world of high emotions, sensual excitement, funny feisty women, sexy tortured men and glamourous locations where laundry doesn't exist ...

I also tutor a 14-week in-depth online Write a Romance Novel course. So, if you have ever wanted to learn how to write romance from a bestselling author, check it out here: www.profwritingacademy.com/course/wri...

Now I believe wholeheartedly that readers should give honest and open reviews on Goodreads and Amazon and elsewhere. If you didn't like a book you are entitled to say so (even if it's mine! ouch). But you may notice that none of my book reviews are less than four-stars. That's simply because as an author myself I know how pathetically sensitive I am about bad reviews and with that in mind I prefer to spread the love among other authors — and don't do public reviews of books I didn't like. Just thought I'd clarify that!

THE RESULTS OF MY BEST IN HPLANDIA 2019, WILL BE REVEALED AT THE END OF THIS REVIEW.

Hint: This year, 3 novels tied for 1st place, because I couldn't pick one ! I really spent all day pondering, while doing chores, but I still couldn't find one clear winner.

And now, on to this review ! ...

...but every time she’d had a chance to assess his broad, muscular physique or that rakish, devil-may-care smile from afar, she would fantasise that every word was true—and want to be the next woman on whom he bestowed that smile, and so much more.

He’d been a myth to her then, an object of her febrile adolescent desires, who had been larger than life in every respect. But he was just a man now.

In this sweetly romantic, stand-alone sequel to Carrying the Sheikh's Baby, this reader's reunited with two characters who'd intrigued me so much, when I encountered them in Zane's and Catherine's novel, that I hoped they'd get a story of their own.

In Carrying the Sheikh's Baby, the H was introduced as Kasim, Zane's charming, illegitimate, rakishly handsome younger half brother who had fought his way, according to desert tradition, to become the Chief of the Nomadic Kholadi tribe. He had seemed to be just a sexy desert warrior, with his tongue in cheek humour and light hearted jests.

But, even in that novel, I'd sensed some hidden depths to this charming prankster, who had been such a dominant minor character, that he'd leapt out of the page and grabbed my attention. And in this, his own story, he definitely doesn't disappoint:

He’d been tall and arrogant and magnificent—part warrior, all chieftain, all man— https://bookshout.com/store/books/225...

Furthermore, we're told that he now prefers to go by his Kholadi name, Raif:

‘My name is Raif. Only my brother calls me by my Narabian name.’
https://bookshout.com/store/books/225...

In the first novel, the heroine Kasia had been Catherine's amiable, pretty, and sweet natured 19 year old maid/confidante. She'd been portrayed as a hilarious naif, with hidden founts of wisdom. Without Kasia's help, Catherine's adjustment to life in Narabia, would've been more difficult.

Kasim ( hereafter referred to as Raif ) and Kasia were never introduced to each other, in Carrying the Sheikh's Baby, but it's so wonderful to see them paired together as the MC's in their own story.

Their love story begins in the desert, where the stranded heroine is rescued, from an incoming sandstorm, by the rugged H and his trusty stallion. Raif emerged literally, out of the desert, as a larger than life and potent threat to the heroine:

The rider was a man. A very big man. His outline broad and strong, the fluid graceful movements powerful and overwhelming as he seemed to become one with the stallion as it galloped at full speed. He wore a headdress,... https://bookshout.com/store/books/225...

This is the H, Raif, in his desert gear:

She doesn't recognize him and ends up accidentally shooting him in the shoulder. What follows is a tale straight out of romantic desert fantasy...

A Kidnapping/Rescue.

A gruelling ride to his solitary oasis encampment.

Steamy mutual insta-lust.

And hot, torrid passionate lovemaking after she nurses his fever.

I'm not going to give a further blow by blow spoiler reveal, but it's important to note that Kasia has been enamoured of Raif, for years. She'd seen him when he visited his half brother and, like all the women at Zane's Golden Palace, she'd developed a major infatuation with him.

That's why she chose to lose her virginity to him, when they're together at the oasis encampment. She's no longer the sheltered palace maid, but a post graduate university student at Cambridge. She knows that she'll be returning to England and wouldn't have to deal with any embarrassing repercussions - should he turn up at the palace.

This is the heroine, Kasia:

She makes significant miscalculations, though, because:

1. He's not an impoverished, desert warrior who never travels outside of the Kholadi lands. He's actually a billionaire with numerous global investments and interests.

2. He's an upstanding man, who offers marriage after he discovered that she's a virgin. According to ancient Kholadi customs, it's dishonourable for sheikhs to ruin virgins and not propose marriage.

The conflict develops after the heroine, confused by his adamant declaration that they're to be married, runs away with his horse and then escapes to England !

The H's ego is bruised and he's determined to get an explanation for her OTT dramatic behaviour...

Raif follows her to England, after he's unable to get her out of his mind...

The besotted H even offers a PhD scholarship endowment to her college, in an effort to lure her back into his orbit. He's determined to have another chance with her.

This is the H, in western garb:

His mild desire for vengeance, is supplanted by all consuming lust when he sees her again. Raif becomes a little worried about the acceleration of his feelings for Kasia. He doesn't yet acknowledge it as love, but he knows that he needs to be with her.

Her pregnancy revelation almost ruined things for them, because he accused her of trying to hide it from him and was suspicious of the reasons for her supposed deception. But he rises to the challenge, tones down the temptation to wallow in alpha male assholery and puts her needs first.

He's sweet, tender, thoughtful and chivalrous in his attempts to offer up an acceptable compromise, giving them the chance to further their acquaintance, before proposing to her again. The heroine is already basically in love with him, but she's afraid that the sentiment isn't reciprocated:

No, the real stumbling block to a marriage between them wasn’t her feelings, it was his. His refusal to accept that love even existed. https://bookshout.com/store/books/225...

His backstory is an extremely torturous one, because he'd been beaten and kicked out of the palace, by his own father, when he was just a child. Plagued by his illegitimacy and by the sad, scandalous story that his late mom had been a whore, Raif has had to fight for everything he's achieved. Consequently, he depends only on himself and trusts no one - not even his half brother, who clearly loves him.

It's clear to me that he's in love with Kasia, even before he realizes it, because everything he does is predicated on what he believed was best for her and their unborn twins. He made one huge error in judgement, by assuming incorrectly that her health would be endangered if she returns to the Kholadi lands with him. But, with the intervention of Zane and Catherine, it's all sorted out and the MC's get their beautiful HEA with their twin daughters.

I enjoyed meeting Zane, Catherine and their 2 adorable, precocious kids in this story. It's always heart-warming to see beloved former MC's in a new guise, as a happy and settled couple. Zane will always have a special place in my HPlandia chronicles, as the uber sexy winner of 2018's Winking Pussy Award, since he's my favourite H for last year. This year's winner will be revealed, after the safety information.

Safety: No OW, no OM and no cheating. Both MC's are celibate during their separation.

Oh yeah, please note that NONE of the books I review, are ARC/request reviews. My Goodreads friends know that I never have and never will be an ARC reviewer, because it'll just seem like homework and that'll take all the fun out this process, for me 😂. I just needed to mention, again, in case any of my newer friends assume that I'm giving fab reviews to certain authors, in exchange for a free copy of the book. This is all just a hobby and it'll always remain that way, since I don't consider myself to be a book blogger.

Without further ado...

MY 2019 HARLEQUIN PRESENTS AWARDS.

🌟BEST HPLANDIA LOVE STORIES IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER - A 3 WAY TIE:

Abby Green's Awakened by the Scarred Italian

Heidi Rice's Claimed for the Desert Prince's Heir

Carol Marinelli's Claimed for the Sheikh's Shock Son

The book that just missed making this a quadruple tie, is Kelly Hunter's Untouched Queen by Royal Command. I know there are are some elements in that novel, that bothered some of my Goodreads friends, but I can't in all fairness, omit this from the list because I was really swept away to another world, when I read that novel.

Unlike last year, I'm not going to list all the runner's up, because this year I have maternal responsibilities and I'm really rushing to finish typing this. LOL. But my fav HPlandia authors for 2019 are: Lynne Graham, Carol Marinelli, Heidi Rice, Abby Green, Jennie Lucas, Sharon Kendrick, Pippa Roscoe, Dani Collins, Maya Blake, Caitlin Crews and Clare Connelly.

🌟 MY FAVOURITE HERO & THIS YEAR'S WINNER OF THE WINKING PUSSY AWARD:

Ciro, the H whose story literally made me cry, from Abby Green's Awakened by the Scarred Italian. I kinda knew, immediately after reading this book, that Ciro would be this year's guy for the Winking Pussy Award. He just touched a special place in my heart, because of his besotted obsession with Lara. But, if I'm honest, I'll admit that in the physical appearance contest, Zane ( last year's winner ) is more my type.

🌟 RUNNERS UP, WITH NOTEWORTHY MENTIONS, FOR THE SEXIEST HERO AWARD, IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER:

✳️All of Lynne Graham's guys 😍♥️💞! That oughta speak for itself 😉 Leo, from The Greek's Surprise Christmas Bride, was my favourite from her group.

✳️Sharon Kendrick's lustworthy Latin brothers in Bought Bride for the Argentinian and The Argentinian's Baby of Scandal.

✳️The smouldering, mysterious Dante, from Heidi Rice's Claiming My Untouched Mistress I think he's even hotter than Raif, who's also an obvious runner up !

✳️ Viktor Rohan, the stoic aristocratic hunk of Hungarian hotness, from Dani Collins' Innocent's Nine-Month Scandal. Many of you will disagree, cause Viktor was a bit of an asshole, but I enjoyed him.

✳️ Jennie Lucas' heroes, especially the brooding Stavros, from Christmas Baby for the Greek.

✳️Clare Connelly's H's, except for Thanos, that moronic former super manwhore, from Bride Behind the Billion-Dollar Veil. But, I really ♥️ Matthias, the H from Shock Heir for the King. The H from Spaniard's Baby of Revenge was hot as well, even though I never got around to reviewing that book, since I read it during my most hectic time of year.

✳️ Axios, from Maya Blake's Claiming My Hidden Son

✳️ Gabriel, from Abby Green's Redeemed by His Stolen Bride. He's a helluva lot hotter than his sexy brother, Lazaro.

✳️ All of Carol Marinelli's H's. 😍

✳️ Diego, the scorching bad boy H from Maisey Yates' The Spaniard's Stolen Bride.

✳️ Honourable mention to Michelle Smart. I started enjoying her books, for the first time, this year. But there was one doozy that I was just unable to finish.

🌟 MOST CONSISTENT AUTHOR FOR 2019.

Carol Marinelli.

This year was a better one, generally, for HPlandia. It was far more competitive and Carol Marinelli just turned up the heat, with hit, after hit after hit. Of course other readers will probably disagree. Special mention to new author, Pippa Roscoe. She's a promising talent.

🌟 BEST USE OF PROSE.

Caitlin Crews.

Caitlin Crews and I have a love-hate relationship, because I'm either awed by her writing style or pissed off at her characters and storylines. LOL. But, I adored Secrets of His Forbidden Cinderella, just as much as I loathed The Italian's Twin Consequences. And, her novel Unwrapping the Innocent's Secret with the former novitiate heroine, was really enjoyable. Out of all HPlandia authors, CC makes me think a lot, when I'm reading her books. Sometimes that's a good thing...

I'm not gonna list the authors who disappointed me, this year, because it's the same old group as last year, except for Lucy Monroe since she didn't release anything this year. And, I'm honestly not in the mood to start bitching about the same old authors, writing the same mind numbingly boring stories. My friends already know who I'm talking about 😂.

And, I know I still need to write reviews for this month's books by Melanie Milburne and Rachael Thomas. But I've finished reading both and they honestly didn't affect the outcome of my HPlandia year in review.

And to all my Goodreads' friends, Merry Christmas and I hope you share the joy with your loved ones and your favourite furbabies !

Oh my god a Sheikh book with a virginal heroine and not one but TWO babies! Totally my kind of book. Our heroine Kasia spends one night in the desert with Prince Raif. She was a virgin which shocked him so he proposes marriage. But Kasia doesn't want a marriage based on duty so she disappears. She returns back to London and her academic career but Raif is right there and once he discovers she is pregnant he is determined to convince her to marry him. Kasia ends up agreeing to a marriage of convenience for her child but Raif has a lot of issues.

I love, love, love everything about this book! And I loved Raif! I can say that he's the most swoon-worthy sheikh hero I've ever read! He is dark and passionate and sexy. Poor guy the abuse he suffered at the hands of his father broke my heart. Still he was not a cruel hero. He was an alpha but caring hero. I liked that the heroine had a PhD and that she was strong but vulnerable. Kasia and Raif are incredible together. The love scenes are scorching and passionate. The epilogue with their twin baby girls was adorable and super romantic. Finally an author who wrote a really detailed epilogue! If you are a fan of sheikh romances you should def read this book.

Safe: Heroine is a virgin, hero is experienced, no other man, no other woman, no cheating.

4.5 - "What is your choice..?" Stars!

Give me an arrogant, brooding, slightly over the top Desert Prince, and a naïve, studious virgin whose flight instinct is 100% stronger than her fight is and I am a happy girl. Add in the fact said brooding male is also an absolute sweetheart behind the scowl and I am a goner. It may not be PC in this day and age of sexual equality, but I love this sort of story, hence the reason I pretty much read Kasia and Rafe’s story in one sitting.

"Why are you here..?"

"…I still want you… And I can’t make it stop."

You know what you are getting with a Mills& Boon/Hqn title, to be honest that’s half of the charm, but Heidi took me back with this one, a classic story-line, plenty of sexy shenanigans, drama that’s appropriate to the plot, and a couple that you can’t help but root for.

Loved it, and I look forward to reading more from Ms. Rice in 2020!

Heidi Rice sweeps us into an exotic and vivid fantasy with this lush and gorgeous romance. When Kasia gets stranded in a sandstorm in the desert and is confronted with a dangerous(ly gorgeous) bandit on a horse, she does what any sensible academic would do...she shoots him! And so begins a rollercoaster of drama, emotion, lust and love as Kasia and Raif's red-hot chemistry blows up the pages and sets them off on a cat and mouse adventure.
Raif is larger than life, literally. A true embodiment of the most fantastical Alpha Sheikh hero. Kasia is the beautiful, fiercely passionate heroine, who is awakened in every way by Raif's masterful touch. But she guards her honour and independence just as passionately.
Unfortunately what happens in the desert can't stay in the desert and the consequences of their actions follow them to England, and then to Paris and New York as they work out what exactly they want from each other.
This is an escapist fantasy in the best tradition of Harlequin Presents. Curl up and enjoy a break from the real world for a few hours. Loved it!

"Claimed for the Desert Prince's Heir" is the story of Kasia and Raif.

Absolute heartwarming tale of blooming love between an illegitimate king and an orphaned companion. Our H rescues the h, a PhD student and best friend to the queen when she gets lost in the desert. She shoots him instead! Nursing him back to health at a remote oasis, passion ignites and the couple give into their lust. But as the H discovers her hymenated state, he demands marriage, having realized the shame of being a bastard all his life. The h is freaked out and runs away. But the H would not let her go.

Strong, passionate, scarred MC's make this really well written book a fabulous read. Their is a lot of angst, romance but I liked how the couple communicated and were honest with one another. The sex scenes were super hot and the ending was totally awesome.

Heavily recommended!

This was a very good book. It was a follow up to Heidi Rice's 'Carrying the Sheikh's Baby.' It is not listed as a series, though. It is more of a duo. Book two happens four or five years after the first book and is about two people we meet in the first book. That is why I feel it is necessary to read the first book. It gives you a good lay of the land.

I thought it was quite enjoyable, more so than book one.

I definitely recommend this!

Enjoyable. I didn’t love the book but liked the main characters. Raif’s over protectiveness of Kasia was sweet, for now. But I was glad to see her hold her own against him and not allow him to bully her.

Overall a good read.

Hero was a horn dog

From the first moment to the last, that man had a raging you know what? I kept picturing in my head of this guy walking around with a tent pole in his robes. Lol. It was kind of off putting really. Casia didn't seem to mind though. She was just as zealous! I originally thought about not reading it because it was just to porny for me. A cross between porn and corny. I was like meh. But it really wasn't as bad as all that. They are trapped in a sandstorm, she shoots him, and when he finally wakes up, he's horny. He says you want it, she says yes and there you go. When he finds out she's a Virgin, he says now I must marry you because I spilled my seed in you. It was just too weird. She runs off, leaves him there and he almost dies. He then goes looking for her but she's in England so he follows her there and they end up getting married. she's of course pregnant, isn't that a big surprise for an HP novel?! Lol. Its got a very sweet epilogue too.

Sweet story of a tribal chief and a graduate student who meet cute in the middle of the desert with a sandstorm approaching.

Heroine tries to shoot him. He takes her on horseback to his camp. They have sex and hero proposes marriage because she was a virgin.

Heroine refuses him since she wants love with marriage. She runs off to England and continues her studies. Hero follows her after he recovers from an appendectomy.

Heroine discovers she’s pregnant with twins. Their last big block to the HEA is the hero being afraid to have the heroine live in the desert with him since his mother died in childbirth.

This is a low-angst story with a caring alpha hero and heroine who leads him on a merry chase but isn’t bitchy about it.

This was a mild, lightly written romance book. The writing style did not appease me and I found it to be a hot mess. The Arab names used in the book were all made up (and given that I understand a bit of the language) they did not even present the people/geography the writer could’ve wanted to talk about. I find this a very lazy attitude from the writer to write about an Arab prince and do zero research. In fact I find it rude..!

The mc’s were mechanical. Kasia was cold and unfeeling despite her humble upbringing. Her placement in the castle was also vague. She was the daughter of a kitchen help and then got to be best of friends with the acting princess and also got a scholarship to go to the UK for school. Not sure how she learned English prior to that to make it to the university of Cambridge...

She seemed to be deeply dependent on her friendship with the princess who I assume was funding all her expenses. Including Kasia’s return flight to England to escape a confrontation with Raif.

My grievances will not end any sooner. Raif also turns out to be a billionaire/bastard/ other brother who’s also a tribe chief.

In my opinion this writer brain stormed a couple of ideas to use for her Arab inspired novel and bs’d her way through it. Well here I am. Calling her out.

2 stars I will leave for Raif’s extremely hot love making. Also, Kasia lost me at the beginning of the book when she made light of her two phenomenal orgasms with Raif that she laughed over with the princess (who’s also her best bud— don’t know how you climb that kinda social ladder). That was it. Holy crassness.

Companion/ sequel to "Carrying the Sheikh's Baby".

Kasia, from the first book, has been at Cambridge University but has returned home. Unfortunately, her vehicle breaks down in the desert when she returns home for a visit. Fortunately, she's rescued by Prince Raif, half-brother to Sheikh Zain (from the first book). Unexpected consequences cause a lot of angst for them in light of their childhood traumas.

4 stars. This ticked all of my boxes. Surprise baby, emotionally damaged & stunted hero, likable heroine, exotic locations. It had it all. I really, really enjoyed this and blew through it so fast. It was paced really well which made reading through this a breeze. I liked the writing a lot.

Kasia and Raif have been through so much in their lives so they really have to work to get to their HEA. Raif especially is extremely jaded and closed off because of his awful childhood and my heart hurt for him. Kasia was awesome because she really gets things rolling in terms of their relationship and getting him to warm up to the thought of love. It was beautiful and I loved the way their relationship developed. The ending was wonderful and I loved the epilogue as well. This was a great read and I definitely will check out more of this author’s work.

That’s it...I am taking a break from Heidi Rice...at least for a few hours. Many things in the house have been neglected over the past couple of days as I have been reading back to back books. But seriously I had to read this because it is tied to two other books...but can totally stand alone. I would suggest reading them in this order though:

Carrying the Sheikh’s Baby
Claimed for The Prince’s Heir
Innocent’s Desert Wedding Contract

I started unknowingly with the last one(which is still my favorite if I had to choose). In the last one we get a glimpse several years into the future of the protagonists in book 1 and 2. Even though they do not figure prominently in book 3, Heidi Rice did just enough coverage of them to make me immediately look to see if they had their own stories. To my ever loving surprise and my cats dismay, there were books about them!!

This book focuses on Kasia and Raif...it is 5 years after the first book. (I love that it wasn’t a simultaneous romance and that we get to revisit the characters in the first book.)

The action and loving starts pretty quick!

Just look away Kasia, just look away...(insert giggle)

The story begins with the sex, and the love develops over time. Our hero has to overcome a damaging childhood which has left him fearful of love...yet without knowing it he shows love for the heroine every step of the way even though it is misguided at times. Like all HR heroes, he has been blessed with a substantial endowment, and I’m not talking money😉although he has that too! The h’s bio parents are absent by choice causing abandonment issues for her. However, she at least had a grandma to teach her the finer points of love and cooking! Where the HR heroes are abundant physically, the heroine’s are abundant in their capacity to give love and feel empathy. Yet, once again they won’t settle for less than love and they stand up to the hero so he takes notice!

This book was a great way to escape for 3 hours...it had angst, and no evil ow’s or om. There was no cheating and a super satisfying epilogue. The book is sexy, funny, and loving. There is also adventure and of course an unplanned baby. There are some great reviews if you want to know more about the in’s and out’s of the story, but I am finding with this author’s books that I’m really enjoying the unknown aspect!

Let me start by saying that I am an Arab girl who never liked the Sheikh/Arab prince trope because it was -and still sometimes horribly written with grave mistakes about Arabs and Arabian culture or at least ,streotyped .. but Ms Rice nails that trope in a modern well written way to a T..Shukran Lady author for your hard and unbiased research in the Arabian culture .
P.S I think I may write a longer review with imagined pics to the H *sigh*..as I imagined him like a celebrity Arab I know ;)

My first time reading a book from this author and how lucky I am that I came upon a winner. Definetly worth the read. If you are a fan of books with virgin heriones, no previous relationships and commitments as well as other men/women like I do, then I highly recommend giving this one a try. I just love how Raif/Kasim treat Kasia. He would be boiling hot with anger because of what she did at one moment but when he sees her he burns hot with desire and consideration for her. I love how overly protective and possessive he is of her and let us not forget their cuddles and cute domestic life that we caught a glimps of. Will definitely look for other books from this author starting with Cat and Zane's story who I believe have a book of their own as well.

Sometimes you just need a hot Desert Prince!

My first time reading Heidi Rice and this was just a stunning romance! Admittedly the beginning made me a little apprehensive and I wasn't too sure about it but I gave it a chance and I'm so glad. Kasia and Raif have passion like I haven't read in a while. These people could not keep their hands off of each other! I love when a story steady gets better as you read and I was enthralled until the end. Kasia and Raif have lost both their parents and have to learn to love and trust each other. Raif is so possessive and obsessed with her and I just loved him!

Another awesome read!

I really enjoyed reading this novel. It literally made my heart ache for Kasia and Raif. It was another emotional read. I kept going back to a few favourite scenes one of them being that Raif is a polyglot...WHOOPS! I think I've said too much. Please read this novel to find out more about these two awesome characters.

I will be finding more of Heidi 's novels. I am enjoying them so far.

I am going through a difficult time and could not settle on any of the books I have. So to jump start I always go back to the tried and true. The fantasy romance and it helped me little by little to get into the habit of reading again. I have always been able to find solace in my most diffucult of times.

Quick read. Kaisa didn't know it was the Prince coming towards her during the sandstorm in the desert, when she shot him. She thought it was a bandit, boy was she surprised. Would her teenage crush be her future?

I wrote this book! So clearly my rating is biased... But just wanted to inform readers this is the 2nd book in my series The Khans, which are linked books about neighbouring (fictional) desert kingdoms, the Princes who rule them and the women who they cannot live without!

The last book in the series, Stolen for His Desert Throne, which released in May 2023, is my first 2nd generation romance and features Princess Kaliah, the daughter of my first Khan couple Zane and Catherine in Carrying the Sheikh's Baby...

Princess Kaliah, is in fact the baby in that book. Here is the series in order, if you want to read the rest of them and catch other glimpses of Kaliah along the way..

#1: Carrying the Sheikh’s Baby – Zane and Catherine

#2: Claimed for the Desert Prince’s Heir – Kasim (Rafe) and Kasia

#3: Innocent’s Desert Wedding Contract – Karim and Orla

#4: Banished Prince to Desert Boss – Dane and Jamilla

#5: Stolen for His Desert Throne – Kaliah and Kamal
