The old eddas speak of dreki—fabled creatures who haunt the depths of Iceland's volcanoes, and steal away fair maidens.

Freyja wants none of such myths. Dreki seducing young ladies? Ha. They probably eat such foolish girls. But when the local dreki steals her last ram—costing her any chance of feeding her ill father through the winter—Freyja intends to confront the fearsome myth.

Sentenced to a life of exile from his clan, Rurik is fascinated by the furious woman who comes to claim her ram. She reeks of mysterious magic and challenges him at every step. He intends to claim the passionate firebrand, but to do so, he must take mortal form.

It's the only time the dreki are vulnerable, and with a dragon-hunter arriving on the shores of Iceland, he can barely afford the risk—but lonely Freyja, with her elf-cursed eyes and pragmatic soul, tempts him in ways he's never felt before. Is she the key to reclaiming his heritage? Or will she be his downfall?

“To dream of something more is the greatest gift one owns. Without them, there is nothing to strive for. No reason to continue breathing. We might as well become the rock and stone beneath our feet.”

I haven’t had the best of luck with dragon shifter romances but Heart of Fire was compelling from beginning to end. This was my first Bec McMaster book and I’m already kicking myself for not having read her books sooner! I started it around midnight, and do not regret the hours of sleep I lost to complete this book.

The plot is a lot simpler than I would normally prefer, but the sexy romance and kick-ass action totally made up for it. The world-building was fantastic, completely believable and not at all cheesy!

I feel like I’ve said this a million times, but I’ll say it again. Fierce heroines are usually a hit or miss for me because authors often give heroines a temper and call that a ‘strong heroine’ (insert eye rolling). I am SO GRATEFUL that the author doesn’t do that here. Freyja is a strong heroine because she manages to push through each day despite her dire situation and the hardships of her life. She’s fierce and bold even when she’s hopeless. But most importantly, she knows when to be vulnerable. And that, is how you write a strong heroine! (Thanks for coming to my TedTalk...) I loved Freya so much, and I couldn’t help but root for her!

"...We all need a little bit of romance in our lives. A little bit of magic. You shouldn’t trust all of the stories, but you should believe some, Freyja..."

If you’re done with rapey heroes, may I present to you: Rurik. A dreki living in exile and also the most gentlemanly hero I have ever come across in a shifter romance. I loved everything about him – from the sacrifices he made for his kingdom to the way he treated Freyja, he was just so suave and sexy. I also appreciated that he was an alpha without being an asshole. He’s a man of honor and a fierce and protective mate through and through.

Freyja and Rurik were perfect together, the sexual tension was so HOT. Every moment between them had me sitting on the edge of my seat. Rurik’s attempts at wooing Freyja were so endearing and I love how he never once tried to force her to do anything she didn’t want to do. He was so patient with her and was willing to do anything to let her know she could trust him. As much as I enjoy a bit of dub-con here and there, a gentleman who cares about consent will always have my heart!

“I intend to have you in every way possible, Freyja. I intend to discover every last little secret you own, to know you… in every manner. This is a game of seduction, and I will not harm you nor make your choices for you. I speak of courtship only. But I think you would enjoy what I intend, very much so.” At her swift intake of breath, he leaned back. “And I am not ashamed to admit I intend to chase you. Fair warning, fair maid. You will be mine.”

Another side of their relationship I loved was how Rurik was a such a romantic compared to Freyja's pragmaticism. They really balanced each other out. I also love the way the fated mates’ aspect was presented in this book. There was a strong pull between the two, but nothing that would take away from their autonomy… if you know what I mean.

The secondary characters were all very interesting and it’s always great see a solid cast of characters, each with their own motives and dreams. This book sets up the next few books very well. Although Rurik is an exiled dragon, I’m glad we got to see a glimpse of the dragon court and a few other dragons like Andri.

The reason I couldn’t give this book 5 stars was because it was lacking in certain areas, and I know many readers will be disappointed at the lack of closure the ending brings. It’s not a cliffhanger by any means, there were just a lot of unanswered questions.

All in all, Heart of Fire was a great blend of historical fantasy, action and fated romance. All the characters were well rounded and interesting. The story was straightforward while having depth, and I can’t wait to continue with the series!

This was a really fun and easy fantasy romance! I thought I would give Bec McMaster another try after being disappointed initially and I am glad I did

THE BOOK WAS REALLY SHORT and straight to the point, which I enjoyed because it meant the plot was fast-paced and there weren't any lulls

IT WAS A GOOD INTRO into this new series - I enjoyed the world of the Dragons and the Dreki and the small pieces of information we learned left me wanting more

FREYJA'S REACTION TO LOSING her virginity was iconic 😂 This book was quite steamy considering how short it was!

description

🆗 RURIK WAS KIND OF obsessed with tying or restraining Freyja's hands above her head. I feel like he did this in almost every intimate scene they had, and even some other random scenes. I guess he knew what he was into lol 😆

Overall, this was a really enjoyable book and it was quite short so I was easily able to finish it in one sitting. I will probably continue with the rest of the series, but not anytime soon since this was mostly standalone and didn't have a cliffhanger or anything. I recommend this if you're looking for a short but entertaining fantasy romance book involving awesome dragons and a steamy romance!

This!

How?

What?!

How does this even exist?

The last time I ran out of words for a book was when I read The Wall of Winnipeg and Me. And I mean both times. That is one book I will never be able to review, no matter how many times I read it or how old I get. Words can't describe it.

That was in 2016. And once again I'm blown away.
About 40% in I started thinking how this book made me feel and if it would qualify for my reading challenge prompt, "A book that shatters your soul". And I'm still on the fence on that one but I know for sure that this book made my soul ache with so much yearning I'm flat out surprised I'm not a bawling mess right now.

It wasn't a slow burn but it feels that way. The writing was so effortless. Every word filled with such deep meaning. Like every alphabet had a reason behind it.
*shakes head*
I'm just sitting here right now and sort of laughing at myself cause I'm this hot mess, close to tears because of a combination of words written on pieces of dead trees.

I have to say. This. This is how you write a Dragon Shifter book.
I am hooked on Bec McMaster.
Appalled people don't know this gem exists.
Horrified how long it took me get to it.
And Devastated there are only two books in the series for now.

Heart of Fire is about Freyja, a young woman who lives on the edge of her village with her ailing father trying her damned hardest to just get through the bitter winter against all odds and challenges, when the local Dreki steals her last ram and all her hopes of survival.

I loved how you could literally feel her stark hopelessness and that moment where she'd just had enough. It was raw and so real. It was like flipping a switch. One thing. Just that one thing and you stop caring.

That's what happened with Freyja. The lamb stealing just pushed her over that ledge she'd been hanging on to by the skin of her teeth. She'd always played by the rules, paid her tithe when it was her turn, even when she couldn't afford to pay it, in exchange for the Dreki to leave them alone. So the ram? Yeah.

And that's why we next see her when she's confronting the beast.

When the humans settled in his territory don't pay the tithe he rightly deserves, Rurik decides to take matters in to his own hand and takes the ram off of one of the settled humans. What he didn't expect was the fierce little woman chasing after him for revenge.
A human.
A teeny tiny itty bitty of a mousey shepherdess of a human challenging a Dreki?
ANND, she reeks of magic?
How can you not be intrigued?!

In Rurik's words,
For the first time in decades his interest, long dormant, stirred. The male in him had looked and seen a creature of flame and shadow, of mighty power, utterly bedazzling. A treasure beyond any he owned. He wanted her. Therefore he would have her, and together they would burn the world until he tired of her.

Now the ending left much to desire in terms of closure and unanswered question but I have a feeling there will future books to remedy that and the truth?

I'm in a world of my own.

And

“You’re mine,” he growled out, and there was nothing to say to that, no means with which to misunderstand him.

Freyja tilted her chin up stubbornly, aware the ground was shifting beneath her.

“Of course it’s because you challenged me.” His voice turned gravelly. “You’re beautiful, but I have seen beautiful women before. No, what captured my attention was your fierce pride and stubbornness. Your determination. The storm brought me a warrior in female flesh, and I knew then that I wanted you. You were utterly glorious that night. Because you challenged me. Because, in all my long years in exile, I have never met a woman who dared.”

This author is becoming one of my favorites with her inventive and imaginative books.

“I intend to have you in every way possible, Freyja. I intend to every last little secret you own, to know you… in every manner.

This was such an original dragon story. We are taken aback to 1880 Iceland when a dragons exists and everything seems possible.
We meet Freyja, a young woman trying to survive taking care of her ill father and their farm when a dreki steals her last ram. Facing her despair of starving she decides to confront the beast.Once in his lair things change and she discovers than maybe he is more than a beast, and the derki himself is being quite hypnotized with this fierce, mysterious and full of magic woman .
Rurik is very gallant and charming either in derki or human form. He has lost a lot , choosing exile from his clan and was in a hibernation until he meets his challenge.
Freyja is a strong woman, both in powers as in mentality. She is intelligent and fierce and thought she tries to hide her loneliness , in the moment she meets Rurik she feels the strong connection between them.
I loved their interactions and what they felt for eachother was genuine and touching.
The world building is fantastic, the writing still got me hooked from the beginning again and the plot is very engaging like in other series by this author.
What I was disappointed in was the closure. It was very rushed. So many questions left unanswered, but then I ll read the next book hoping I will find them.

“And what happens when you’ve conquered me?”
“How does one conquer a storm?”

Update:
Reread it in 2024 and still liked it. Getting back into this world was like returning home and even though some moments weren't perfect, there is still a place in my heart for these characters.

My original review:
4,5 stars

It was everything I didn't know I needed.

Fantastically strong, fierce and not-taking-any-shit heroine; intense, but hot and funny alpha-hero. Dragons. Mystery. Magic. Action. Delicious slow burn.

"Oh, precious Freyja." his breath shivered over her skin. Rurik copped her face, callused thumbs stroking gently against her cheeks. "You are a fascinating contradiction. Barely afraid of me when you should be, but frightened of me when I am at my least dangerous."

The author built a beautiful world with colourful characters, her words pulled me in and did not let go. Several big questions were left unanswered at the end, and I really hope we do get to know more later in the series, but I'm already at the second book and can't stop.

What an utterly splendid tale! *insert posh British accent

Captivating, lush, strangely compelling, and lovely.

Loved the Dreki “lore”, the world building, and the magic.
Lovingly stubborn characters and engaging plot. And the inter-connected plot twist. Amazing! This series held such a captivating storyline and I can’t wait to dive in👏

And as a Dane, I love the added Scandinavian mysteries☺️

What I loved about this:

- The heroine (beautifully characterised)
- The writing (very atmospheric, almost put you there, in the space the characters lived in)
- The dialogue and chemistry between the leads.

What didn't work:

- The plot was weak or perhaps, a better word for it is underdeveloped. (considering the potential there was in the folklore and setting)
- It didn't feel as if there was a clear HEA and there were many unanswered questions (I suppose the next books - which focus on other couples - will set some light on the mysteries left behind in this book - but to me that's not good enough. I didn't read this in order to have to read the other books to get my answers, it was very much promoted as a standalone within a series of interconnected stories)

This is by far the best dragon book I have read since Dragonbound by Thea Harrison. In fact, its one of the best fantasy romance books I have ever read. In fact, it's one of the best books I have ever read. I just cannot wait for March for the next book in this series. There were a lot of open issues left at the end of this book I need resolved ASAP! No cliff hanger - but the story definitely continues for the H and h and other characters as well. Its been a while since a book really grabbed my attention and left me wanting more. So looking forward to more books in this series.

I was excited to read this book since I’ve never heard of dragon-shifters and wanted to discover a new genre, but I had to dnf at 38%.

The book was good, the problem is that I was zoning out the whole time.
It had too many “intelligent words” like vexatious, boggy moors, or sentences that were phrased in Old English(?) “I need not remind you your intentions had best be pure?”
That stopped me from getting into the story, it was giving me war flashbacks of when I had to read El Quijote in school.

When the local dreki steals her last ram—costing her any chance of feeding her ill father through the winter—Freyja is more than a little peeved, and decides to confront the feared beast. When she does confront him, both she and the dreki who ate her ram, find their lives forever intertwined. Now they just have to deal with a dragon hunter, a village with fools, and the arrival of family members of Freyja’s dreki, who are out for his blood.

I enjoyed the byplay between the main characters, it worked well overall. Freyja is no cowering maiden, and all the better for it. I do wish the ending hadn’t felt so rushed, and I wanted to gain far more insight into Freyja and where her , it seemed like her father knew and yet I was left hanging.

I didn’t know what to expect but this as a nice light read on a night, where I found myself unable to sleep. I did want some more worldbuilding, but hopefully if there is a second book the author will add more.

4 stars because dragons! But really, this was unexpectedly good. I've never read anything by this author and I will definitely be checking out her backlog. The world building could have been fleshed out a little more and I had several questions about Freyja, her origins, and her powers that didn't really get answered. However, the plot itself was unique and the steam between Freyja and Rurik was delicious. There was a great push and pull between them and when they finally did come together, it was hot. Freyja was a very strong woman but not to the point that she was annoying and Rurik was enough alpha male without it being too much. I liked that she set the stage for future characters and their stories. I'm hoping we see more of Freyja and Rurik. Overall, a solid read.

i truly forget why i didn't write a review for this book? i think i was teasing it for something and then i just plumb forgot, but I LOVED IT. Absolutely wild - he's a dragon, she's the virgin sacrifice, it all goes awry. it is in ICELAND (or at least somewhere very akin) there's a volcano, sheep, etc. He is SO growly, and wow it is steamy.

i need to re-read

As you can plainly see, I’m on a little bit of a Bec McMaster kick. After devouring her Dark Arts series, I plan on going back and reading all of the other books she has written. I was intrigued by this series because it’s a Fantasy series, something totally different from her.

It’s clear that McMaster is able to dabble in quite a lot of different genres. Her voice matches the genre well and I like how she is so readily able to customize her words/voice for this genre.

The beginning of the book moves at a very fast paced and to be honest, I was a little surprised by this. Usually with Fantasy novels, the author takes their time to explain the world a bit more, but since the action makes up for it, I can’t really be too mad.

The heroine, Freyja, is a unique one. She’s fierce and independent and I love the fact that she wasn’t afraid to confront Rurik at all. McMaster always writes really strong heroines, so I guess I shouldn’t have been so surprised to see her running headlong towards the dreki.

Rurik has a superior vibe to him, making him feel much more otherworldly and kingly. You truly get the feeling that he is something else entirely and I really loved that. However, the author also does a great job of bringing these two together. There’s a lot of tension at first, but then it turns into something else entirely. I really enjoyed watching it all unfold.

3.5 stars ARC Review

Bec McMaster writes the best heroines. Freyja is fearless as she struggles to hold onto what little she owns to protect herself and her ailing father, even if it means confronting the menacing dragon terrifying her countryside. Except he is not a dragon, he is a dreki - an dragon-like creature with magical powers.

The world building in this story is complicate and rich filled with mythology, family feuds, and ancient creatures. Her characters are bold, especially Freyja. She is fierce as she defends herself against not only the dreki, but also the towns people who are wary of her different colored eyes. Rurik is a great balance of grumpiness and vulnerability. He is infused with a noble nature that cannot stand for injustice. My kind of hero.

However, curiously enough, what works less for me is the relationship between the main characters. There is just something missing in the chemistry. The narrative is strong enough that the story is still compelling. I just missed that little extra zing. Nonetheless, this is a strong start to a series and I'm looking to seeing what the author has in store for us.

DNF @ 47% 1.5 stars

And yet again, Bec McMaster fails to impress me.

At least this book is free so there's that. This is my third McMaster book that I've attempted, and all of them have just been meh. Kiss of Steel had cool world building but a subpar romance, and Heart of Fire and Promise of Darkness were both DNFs for me.

Honestly, I wasn't expecting literary genius but I was expecting some entertainment. This was just really boring and basic. The only thing I liked about it is that it takes place in Iceland and there are dragons. Everything else was bland.

Freyja is Basic Heroine A who is too nice for her own good, only wants to care for her sick father, and cares about nothing else. But alas! Freya has ~weird eyes~ and magical powers that should make her super cool and not boring but nope, she's still boring! Of course everyone in her small village is scared of her because, you know, witchy shenanigans.

Rurik is Possessive Alpha Male B who, upon laying eyes on Freyja, insists he must have her and that he will go to great lengths to smite her enemies, defend her honor, and get her alllll sorts of gifts. All in the matter of about 5 minutes. And OF COURSE there's Irredeemable Asshole C who is only there to make Freyja's life miserable and threaten to rape her, so we can really root for Rurik when he wants to 'destroy' him. I'm no stranger to possessive paranormal MMCs, but I just think Kresley Cole does it better. Rurik is a shapeshifting dragon who.... kills people? fights? is scary....? Nope! Rurik would never hurt anyone (except Irredeemable Asshole C, and I mean really- who wouldn't beat that guy up?) because since he's the MMC, he needs to be made into the #worldsgreatestfeminist even though he's a freaking fire breathing dragon. Rurik has the most boring moral framework ever: the one in which he's just too perfect.

It was SO eye-roll inducing. Instead of getting with a girl who would be less painful to court, Rurik throws in his lot with Freyja, who of course is trying to rebuff him... but her body won't let that happen! Pesky body- Freyja just can't control herself around him! Even though this guy is really insinuating a LOT about their future and just being way too presumptuous, Freyja can't stop thinking about him, despite her better judgement.

Anyway, there's nothing new to see here. It's boring, it's bland, it's a soggy bun in book form.

Utterly amazing. Original and compelling take on dragon shifters. But I love everything McMaster writers, so it's no surprise.

Freya lives in a small superstitious village. One evening, Freya meets the mighty, fearsome dragon beast that roams their lands. The Beast falls in love with the stubborn, mortal woman. The Dragon works hard to win Freya’s heart.
This book is full of twists and turns with dragon hunters and an ancient family feud involving a great dragon battle.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book- and fell absolutely in love with these characters (Rurik I'm looking at you).

I'll keep this relatively short and vague so here goes:
I feel like the best way to describe this book is that it was a really simple and quick story to read. It was a very-easy to get into story with some nice writing and amazing characters.

I mean Rurik and Freyja were absolutely amazing. I loved how BMM managed to make Freyja bold and independent in a way that didn't feel overbearing but instead felt really admirable. And in relation to Rurik, I fell absolutely in love with him (I mean how could you not?) . I loved the chemistry and tension between the characters- their banter was everything. I really enjoyed the way that their relationship developed, and thought that they as a pair, really balanced each other out.

I mean having said all that, the characterization and development were very pretty vague at times- as we barely got any insight into the character's past/ origin (Freja in particular). I would've loved to know more about them and their pasts, as at times the story was a bit too simple for my tastes, and just left quite a lot of unanswered questions- however, I did appreciate the simplicity of the story as it led to a very fun, straightforward read.

The general storyline and plot, were very easy to follow and were genuinely pretty interesting. I mean again, I would've loved to see more depth and development- but it wasn't too much of a problem, as the chemistry and action in the book made up for it- and because I'm also pretty hopeful that the next books in the serious will further develop the plot.

Overall I just really enjoyed this book. For my first ever read by Bec McMaster, I have to say it went pretty well. This was just a really quick and simple story to get into. There was a nice flow to the writing, and some really cute/thoughtful scenes (Rurik had me swooning at times). And even though I would've loved to have seen more from the story, I still enjoyed the book, and can't wait to read more.

Iceland, 1880

Freyja lives with her ill and blind father on a farmstead. She also lives in a world where people have to pay an offering each new moon to the winged creatures they share the Earth with to keep the truce between them and humans. Dreki were created by a goddess when she tore her soul into pieces and gave them powers from the Earth, Air and Fire and they can also take human form. They're sensitive when being call dragons (because they're more like the cousin of dragons) but they still look like them. When one of the animal necessary for her survival is seized by the dangerous beast living near the volcano, Freyja decide it's enough and goes to retrieve it. Only the brave would dare enter the dragon's lair but only the special and mysterious who intrigue the creature with her fierceness and spirit could get out of it alive.

By now I probably said it in every reviews of her books but Bec McMaster have the knack to create amazing fantasy world-building. This one comes with a glossary, which I'm not a fan of but some of my favorite series comes with a lexicon so it's only laziness on my part ;p Some scenes reminded me of Beauty and the Beast (expect with a smooth hero instead of a broody one) but it's not attempt at a remake or something like that. I absolutely adore Loki the adorable... I'll let you discover for yourself what kind of animal he is but it's not a dog and it's not a wolf but it's a canidae ;p

The ending left some things unresolved (but the HEA we all expect is there) but you can see there's more to come in this universe.

I feel like I lack the words to describe this book properly and to express how talented this author is so I invite you to try any of her books. I've never read one that I didn't like so far and I think I must be close to a dozen now.

I'm not really feeling this one.

It had a very promising start. The setting is beautiful. A 1800s Icelandic village that has a magical feel without being flowery. The writing is clean, the dialogue is great, Freyja is lovely.

But I don't personally like the direction the romance and plot is going. The romance is based off the "ohh finally an interesting female, not like the others" trope from the hero/dragon man's pov. Because she has a backbone and is smart. And Freyja has had such a lonely and restricted upbringing that she just seems to confuse lust and decency for real feelings. And I don't blame her for it, but she falls too easily. I'm sure it will deepen later on. But it's an easy and cliche romance.

And the action plot that is being set up also bores me. Dragon politics always have so few players that it gets boring. The dragon hunter plot is going (slowly) in a very predictible direction.

I'll try to come back later.

I am less of a paranormal romance and more of an urban fantasy genre kinda girl, but there are exceptions of course. Bec McMaster is one of them.

Since I read her Kiss of Steel, I never looked back. Her characters are vibrant, sexy, full of backbone. Her world-building is rich and concise. And the romance is scorching hot. Heart of Fire might feel a bit short, but delivers all that.

Freyja is a tough, fierce maiden with unknown magical powers which she doesn't dare to explore. Something to do with her mother's secrets, but the plot does not reveal it to the fullest.

Rurik is a dragon prince in exile, depressed and apathetic, until meeting enraged Freyja ignites a spark in him and gives him something worth fighting for.

The secondary story of the dragon hunter's quest and underlying political intrigues in the dragon court is fascinating and made me wish for a longer story, however, as it is only the first book in the series I expect it'll go into more depth in later books.

I loved how the matter of consent and courtship was handled here. Rurik is patient and wise enough not to push Freyja into anything. She suffered from a wrong kind of a man before, and he sees the importance of her being in control of her pace and desires. All good characters here treat women with respect, actually. And the scumbags who abuse and demean them, get what they deserve.

There are also no stupid misunderstandings or irrational decisions. The protagonists think of what they need to do to help each other. I loved how reasonable Rurik could be or how cold with rage and badass Freyja could become. You go, girl!

Fabulous, short, easy read. Recommended!

This awesome dragon (well, dreki) romance would have received an enthusiastic 5 stars from me if not for the HUGE cliffhanger ending and the fact that the one major question that played a large part of the plot - that of what exactly Freja is - was left completely unsolved. SO, absolutely no resolution in the main storyline OR the secondary one. Ugh. AND... it looks like the next book in this series is about two completely different characters! Double UGH!!! Finish this storyline and tie up these threads first!!

Until then, though, it was awesome storytelling at its best!
