First off, I loved book 1. It has the ebb and flow of a great PNR, with mystery and tension to match. This one stumbled, though it tried to push forward the narrative. I’m disappointed, and that hurts a bit because, like I said, I loved book 1.
Pros: - Finally get somewhere with her relationship. - Certain questions are answered. - Her skills are explored a bit more.
Cons: - Too rushed. - New tidbits are dropped with like explanation. - Fade to black scene. Really??! - Often confusing. - Ending is abrupt, yes it’s a cliffhanger, but they build up felt false and far too fast.
This book picks up soon after book 1 ends. I listened to an audio book version of it. The narrator did a great job giving different voices to the characters.
This book confused me a bit though. While it revealed some information on the story and the world, it also added more confusion for me. To me, the flow of the story wasn't as great as book 1 though. It jumped scene to scene couple of times and the flow felt forced. The world building isn't huge but it gives enough insight into what is going on. I would still like to know why and a bit more though. We do find out about the 4 major powers/gifts of some shifters and how Remi's brother is part of it as well.
I liked that Remi and Laith's story moved ahead a bit. They are still pretending to be fake couple and eventually, it turned into a real relationship. Victoria's role in this whole thing was a surprised that I did not see coming. Same goes for Dean Mardone's part became clearer as in, why she acts the way she does. I wasn't expecting that and it sort of made it tolerable. However, it felt like the book jumped weeks after that scene.
I am surprised by Winter's turnaround and definitely want to see where it leads. Remi finds out more about her brother and it is definitely heartbreaking for her to see how her brother truly was. Of course, the book ended at a cliffhanger but it sort of ended abruptly for me. I am not sure where the next book leads and I do want to find out.
Remi is still reeling from her first semester at Gladwell Academy. Not only had she and Laith discovered a list of students to be ‘culled’ on a dean’s desk with Victoria’s name among them, she also found out that the Gladwell’s had lied to her about the whereabouts of her missing twin, Rahm who had in fact been admitted at Gladwell Academy a year earlier and been culled for bad behaviour.
For the past five nights, Remi’s sleep has been interrupted by visits from the spectre of Rahm, urging her to follow him. But is he real or a figment of her imagination?
With Ms. Shirley’s health deteriorating, the Gladwell’s are searching for a replacement for the gift of scent-sight in order to locate new shifters. Having been warned by Ms. Shirley to keep her gift a secret and the Gladwell’s already suspecting her of having the gift, Remi is finding it difficult to maintain an act.
Tragedy strikes - or was it murder? - when Remi attempts to find answers over her twin’s disappearance. Will a message left for Remi at the time of their death provide answers?
Meanwhile the arrival of three new bear shifters stirs up animosity between the wolves and bear which threatens the fragile peace between both species. Is something more sinister at play? Just what secret is Rahm trying to reveal to his long sister and most importantly, can he be trusted?
Tooth and Claw Society is the second explosive instalment of the Academy of Shifters series. Once more the author has concocted an enjoyable suspenseful plot powered by adept character development and relentless pacing. There were so many jaw dropping and surprising twists of events that it’s become apparent that nothing and no one at Gladwell Academy is what they seem.
I was impressed with the author’s world building in which she has introduced four gifts/curses in the shifter world; That of Manips, Beserkers, Kinetics and Scent-Seers. While Manips have the ability to get inside someone’s mind without them ever knowing, Beserkers can selectively share their emotions and influence others. Kinetics, like Rahm, have the ability of projection. They can use someone’s mind like their own personal projector to make themselves appear to them in living colour. Sight Seers are not only able to sniff out a persons true intentions but can steal the memories of the dead.
The character development was exceptional. Remi and Laith’s relationship grows leaps and bounds and I loved her banter with Winter Davenport who has oddly taken it upon herself to look out for her. Ms Shirley’s backstory was heartbreaking as was an incident from Dean Belhollow’s past. I was shocked by the new development in Dean Mardone’s arc as I didn’t anticipate it at all. With so many doubts cast on the good guys, it’s hard to know who to really trust at all and I wonder whether Belhollow is on the level too what with the bear shifters suddenly acting rebellious.
As with the first book, it’s the author’s infectious sense of humour that continues to charm and thoroughly entertain. All in all this was a well crafted, thoroughly entertaining instalment with another cliffhanger that has ensured that this reader will be diving into the follow up book.
I received an advanced free audible copy of the Tooth and Claw Society and I am voluntarily reviewing it. The narrator did a good job in bringing the characters and story to life with her clear, concise delivery.
This book is really just a development of the overall series arc and definitely not a standalone. A little loose on the plot, the crisis and climax are a bit early in the novel and fizzle out without any real closure. Then there's a twist and cliffhanger. So a bit disappointing, but there's progress on the romance that is both genuine and realistic. So while this novel isn't really spectacular, I'm still enjoying the story and definitely moving on to the next novel.
The first book left us on a interesting note with s lot of directions to go. This books feels comparatively super weak. The plot is scattered. The romance is sudden and not built up well and the climax and conclusion dont feel satisfying instead theyre jsut big old ???. I will read the next and hope it improves. The book isn't bad but it was a letdown compared to book 1.
This is not a standalone, but book 2 in a paranormal series that needs to be read in order. There is no recap, instead the story picks up just a few weeks after the end of the first book and we are thrown right back into the action.
I feel like this was a slower story pace-wise from the last book Up until the craziness of the last few chapters, that is!). In book 1 we were thrown into the world, a whirlwind of action and world building with no pause until the story ended. This book took a slower pace, getting into more character development and world building, filling in all the holes that were missing. And creating even more to the mystery, giving me just enough hints to completely hooked and then leaving me hanging with a shocking ending! I need the next book now...but I kind of want to wait until it is available on audio since I love the audiobook.
I love this narrator. I listened to her bring Remy to life in the first book and then again in this one and I think she is just about the perfect voice. The narrator has a voice for all the characters so there was never any doubt who was speaking. This was a fun listen and I hope I get the chance to listen to the rest of the books in this series.
This series is everything. Yes there is more drama, yes we get a little unrequited love and yes the cliffhanger in the end is killing me. This book starts off a little after the last one. Remi faces so many challenges in this one including the untimely and wierdly mysterious arrival of her brother. Yes, the culled one..or maybe not culled...so much has happened in this story. A new alliance and a rival that turns the entire school against each other. There's also a bit of betrayal mixed with a ton of I didn't quite expect that. This book is life, definitely worth the read.
Things are getting real at the academy. Everyone and everything are not always what they seem. There are many surprises, twists and turns in this book that I found fascinating, although one was a bit disappointing. It doesn't take anything away from the story; that being said, I was hoping for a little different outcome for one situation. On the other hand, I enjoy being surprised by the wonderful things a talented author comes up with to confound us. I am hoping there are many more books in the series! Thankfully, the author has many more books for me to enjoy!
What just happened here??? 😱😳 Remi's journey continues, strengthening her bonds with her pack members and starting a real relationship with Laith, finally!!! 🤗❤️ Strange things start to happen in the bears shifters ranks, which leads to a fierce confrontation between them and the wolf shifters. 😰 Also, Remi is having these strange hallucinations regarding her lost brother, which lead her to a secret place where she discovers a terrible truth. 😱😳🤯 Can't wait for the next book, I need to know what will happen now!!! 😫
I kinda forgot about this series and was a little hesitant to purchase this since I wasn't a huge fan of Remi in the first book; I'm glad I did though! The second book in this series was great and I read it pretty quickly! Characters were fleshed out a little more and I just started the third book and already am half way through. I've grown fond of Remi and Laith, I do wish we got to see more of Remi' pack but 🤷🏼♀️ if you enjoy paranormal stories, especially shape shifter ones, and mystery check this out!
I really enjoyed the world that the author has created within this book. There are so many academy books out there right now but this one didn't disappoint. The main female is great. I love her snarky and sarcastic attitude! The witty banter between the two main characters kept me laughing. The romance is there in small doses with slow build which is one of the reasons I really enjoyed this book. There is also some intrigue in wondering who and what this secret society is that the kids are being culled for. The whole book had a steady build that definitely kept me turning pages. Good book!!
Well the plot just get more weird as Remi continues to get calls from her "lost" brother, but no one but her can see or hear him. He keeps disappearing, causing every one to think she is dreaming and sleep walking since he only appears at night. He succeeds finally in enticing her to an underground grave site and answers to a lot of her questions are made clear, but it poses more dangers ahead. We have to read the next book to see how she copes with it. I can't wait to read on.
Wow what a read!!! 2nd book of the series and it blew the first one away!! The first one was excellent but this topped it. I finished it in 2 reads. The plot thickens, the characters are evolving and overall I cannot wait to see what happens next. Only bad thing about this book..... it was too short!!!! I wanted it to go on and on! Another great book by a fabulous author.
This book was given to me for free at my request and I have provided this voluntary review
The questions about the Tooth & Claw Society increase, along with who is involved and who can be trusted. The second semesger starts, with new pupils, new threats and shocking revelations. I really loved the snark that Remi & Laith throw at each other, and the way they fight together to protect their new pack. I hope it won't be long until book 3 is out, this series is becoming one of my favourites!
A good continuation from Academy of Shifters Book 1. We get to see the love-hate relationship completely bloom, betrayal, and a little more explanation of what happened to the twin brother. The ending is pretty abrupt, but it’s a well-written cliffhanger ending.
The narration by Brittany Goodwin was done just as well as in book 1. I look forward to hearing her narrate book 3, if/when it gets produced.
An exciting, paranormal & urban fantasy. Remi is back for another adventure at the Academy of Shifters. This time her brother regularly attempts to lure her into following him. Because of this, she learns about the existence of the Tooth & Claw Society. The end of the story brings some closure as well as the expansion of future possibilities.
Easy-to-read. Entertaining. Great world building. Romantic. Scary. Tragic. Twisted. Unpredictable. Whimsical. Wonderful characters.
You would think with 2 editors we wouldn't have to deal with bad grammar. The story is good but with errors like which there\their\they're to use, trying to read the story gets difficult. I don't know what's with modern authors. Get it to get her if you want people to continue reading your stories.
There was a brief mention of the other academy so I feel like I am being spoon fed but in a good way. Also totally getting into these endings that cement in the need to keep going. Between the unexplained or suspicious deaths and the disappearing characters I just can’t help needing more! Onto book 3. All my reviews are always voluntarily written.
Definitely more romance here, which I’m a fan of. Being book 2, I had a better understanding of what the academy was like. And there is still plenty more to learn. There are still far more questions than answers. The end was a bit frustrating for just that reason. Luckily I’m diving right into book 3. Hopefully it will clear up a few things.
I really enjoyed this book and loved the characters and how they came together. Well it sounds like her brother killed that women's son and now she is the head master in charge of the Academy. Can't wait to see what will happen next for them.
I can’t believe they sold their own souls and ones of Innocent people. Money really does talk. I really enjoyed reading this book and I need the next one.
Another great adventure in this exciting series. Remi learns more about who she is and what happened to her brother. Things heat up with Laith and shifting becomes easier. Can't wait to read more.
This is such a great series, there is plenty of action and suspense wrapped around the mysteries that are happening at the school. The narrator does a wonderful job making you feel like you are there watching what is happening and I can not wait to see what happens in the next book
This second book in the Veiled World series brought home the bacon. The character development continued to be smooth and intriguing. The discontinued to twist. New drama, old drama, mystery and suspense, and romance. Loved it all. Especially the cliffhanger ending.
A lot going on in this book.Remi wants nothing more than to see her boyfriend and trying to find out about her brother. The shifters in this school seem to be disappearing.
Book two finds Remi in her 2nd semester at the academy. She has her own pack and her own friends, but she still needs to find her twin, Rahm. This book is edge of your seat riveting from beginning to end. Keep your tissues handy, because Remi has so far to go, and just who can she trust?
