Nala Damayanti
(8/10)
I was always looking for books from my culture and it always felt like no one was writing about us or our culture. And when I find these books, they are either wrongly told or boringly written.
It is the first time in all this time that I have felt connected to my people and my religion. Mainly because the book is not too thick and is written in simple language.

'Nala Damayanti' is an engrossing romantic tale of couple - Nala & Damayanti. Nala ruled kingdom Nishada and was generous, handsome but dejected. His father had retired to a forest. His jealous cousin Pushkara had left him. That's why he used to feel dejected. Being alone most of the time, he used to roam outside his palace. His wish of being married to Damayanti was fulfilled by an elegant swan with golden plumes. Damayanti was the daughter of King Bheema of Kundanpur. She was beautiful, loyal and possessed the curse to burn the hunter who had treated her inappropriately. If you're looking for a short comic featuring long - lost love story, then this one is for you.

Almost a 'Romeo/Juliet' feel to this story. I continue to be impressed with this series; would very much like to see a company in America try to replicate the historical comics as does ACK. The way these books introduce you to Indian culture really is fantastic; you get the basic storyline and can look for more works on the subject if you wish.

A beautiful story to get back into the habit of reading/ listening to books.

While the book I read was Nala's Damyanti by Anand Neelakantan, this story from Amar Chitra Katha was the closest available on Goodreads.
