As an art dealer, I’ve learnt that everything and everyone has a price. Months away from my fiftieth birthday, I’ve resigned myself to being alone: I need nothing more than my work to be happy. At least I thought I didn’t want anyone in my life... until a fortuitous meeting with a young artist has me questioning just how happy I really am. And now I’m craving things I thought I’d closed my heart to. Charlie is so full of light and possibility, it’s as if he was made for me. There’s just one problem: he’s half my age.
Charlie Delaney:
As an artist, I’m used to running out of things: paint supplies, canvas, food, money, and patience. The life of a starving artist has turned out a little more real than I would have liked. As if being broke wasn’t bad enough, now I’m practically homeless. But nothing can deter me from my dreams. I just need to get a lucky break. Running into a wealthy art dealer was beyond serendipitous. With Alex’s help, my career might finally take off. But when sparks fly between us, business is the last thing on my mind. Alex is so stoic and strong, it’s like he’s the safe place I’ve been searching for. There’s just one problem: he’s twice my age.
Alexander and Charlie live in different worlds, where more than age separates them. Can a wealthy art dealer and a homeless artist make a life together?
The Heart Dealer is an Age-Gap MM Romance which is part of The Individualists series. Featuring one silver fox, one young and idealistic artist, and the deal of a lifetime.
Solid 4 star book for me. Over the years, may/december romance has become one of, if not my favorite, trope. I just adore the age difference between two men, and all of the drama that can bring with it.
Alex is almost 25 years older than Charlie, which is definitely a major issue for him and is the contributing factor for the conflict throughout this story. I absolutely adored Charlie, how sweet he was and how much he wanted to make it as an artist, rather than give in to his parents' hopes that he would go back home.
I do think this story would have been a bit more impactful for me if it had 15% less melodrama with Alex being SO worried about the age difference. It was definitely one step forward, two steps back with him and a lot of mixed messages sent Charlie's way. Having said that, however, what really helped keep the story moving along for me, was the emotion between the two MC's, their connection was just instantaneous and powerful.
Although this is listed here as the second story, it works very well on its own. I also can't WAIT for Alex's friend to get his story - Neil's book is going to be wonderful!

“Love knows no age, when you find true love, you will not care about age difference. All you count is spending forever with him.” ~ unknown
When Cupid shoots his arrow into some unsuspecting soul’s heart, he doesn’t care about age or anything else. Cupid’s intent is to inspire love in his target. Alexander, almost fifty, is settled in his life. He has experienced true love in the past and lost it. He has given up on finding love like that again. Yet, when he meets art student, Charlie, feelings he thought were long gone begin to resurface. Alexander’s orderly world is thrown into chaos and he is not sure what to do about it. One thing he does know, now that he has found Charlie, he is not willing to pass up the opportunity to spend some time with him.
Charlie is a struggling artist. He is an exceptional painter, but it is a tough business to break into. His chance meeting with Alexander leaves him a little stunned, not only by the fact that he finds Alexander so appealing, but that he happens to be an art dealer as well. It is an amazing coincidence, one that seems too good to be true. They have wonderful conversations about art and life. Alexander finds himself not wanting it to end. Charlie tells him that he is often at a nearby gallery and hopes Alexander will come, but doesn’t really expect to see him again. To his surprise, Alexander comes the next day. Alexander invites Charlie to lunch and he accepts. They begin to learn about each other and, even with the twenty plus age difference, they find that they have a lot in common.
After spending more time together, Alexander invites Charlie to his home for the weekend. There’s a celebration there that he wants Charlie to see. It seems the simplest thing to do is for him to stay at Alexander’s. Alexander makes it clear that the invitation is purely platonic and that he doesn’t expect anything physical to happen between them. The thing is, they are both hoping that something does. Alexander wants a relationship with Charlie, but the age difference keeps holding him back. Alexander confides in his friend, Neil, who, after meeting Charlie, tells Alexander that he should go for it and not let the age thing be a problem. Alexander is still hesitant, but he can only resist Charlie’s charms for so long; they become intimate and it’s marvelous.
Charlie goes alone on a hike in the mountains in order to take photographs for paintings he wants to create, when he gets too near to a ledge and falls. Fortunately, he’s not hurt too horribly, but he can’t get back to Alexander’s. After a while, they organize a search party. Alexander panics. The anxiety he feels from the fear of possibly losing Charlie overwhelms him. He can’t bear losing another person he loves, like he did his partner who died of cancer eight years ago. Alexander goes to the hospital but, instead of comforting Charlie, tells him that it just won’t work between them and that he is ending their relationship.
This is a touching and romantic story. I adored Charlie who was incredibly patient and understanding with Alexander whose head kept interfering with his heart. They were an incredibly well-matched couple with wonderful future potential, but Alexander was so hung up on the age difference that it almost destroyed them. I wanted to smack him more than once and tell him that he should not be trying so hard to throw away such a beautiful gift because of his stubbornness. Fortunately, Charlie was incredibly forgiving. Thanks, CS, for the endearing read.
This is such a beautiful story! You are in fluffy heaven from start to finish and It will leaves you ALL happy afterwards. This is a book you don't want to miss, I highly recommend it!
One of my favorite tropes is age gap. I absolutely love it. This one is a good one. The MCs have a 20+ age gap. Alexander just needed to get out of his own way more to see Charlie was it for him. Charlie was such a lovely character. I am glad he had patience. This is a fun series. I wonder who the next couple will be in book 3 I hope it’s Neil!
I enjoyed this May to December romance. Things that mostly happen in the movies or books. A struggling Artist by chance meets a successful Art Dealer. The writing flowed and you just wanted to turn the page to find out what happened next.
Alex is living a lonely life...as an art dealer, travel is a way of life. His partner passed away, and he’s at an age that he believes is too late for another relationship.
Charlie is the epitome of a starving artist. Couch surfing and no regular income has him second guessing his chosen profession.
A May-December romance, this has a bit of angst and a ton of chemistry!
I'll be honest: Alex and Charlie are just, well, perfect. This is my first Joyce novel. I already downloaded another. I'm probably going to become an addict. From the cute meet to the conflict to the slow burn sex ... yup, this is some grade-A romantic fluff, and you need it in your life.
3.5 stars. I overall liked the story, I just had a couple of issues. As in a lot of age gap books, the older MC goes through the whole, he's to young, I'm to old, it's not going to work, he really doesn't want to be with me, etc. It just drives me nuts that the younger MC is portrayed as he doesn't know what they want. A little doubt is fine but for the majority of the book he kept inner monologuing this. I can understand why he ran when what happened to Charlie happened. After Edward I can see why he was afraid. My other issue is, if I hadn't been told & reminded they were in Ireland, I wouldn't have known. Everyone spoke perfect English. There was no slang, no one spoke Gaelic. I understand that Alex had been traveling and not been around for a long time, but his brother James & sister-in-law Isobel, their kids & best friend Neil live there & I would expect them to have an accent. I know when I go home to Southern Kentucky, I fall into the Southern speech & come home with it for awhile. And in my every day speech there are some words that I just normally pronounce as a Southerner would. I did enjoy the walks and description of the village and them going to the auction. The bench brought tears to my eyes. I did love watching Charlie help heal Alex's heart and show him that he could love again. The epilogue was a perfect wrap up to the story. This is a new to me author & if I can find the first book in this series, I will be reading it. I also will be continuing on should more books be written.
ARC provided by LesCourt Services in exchange for an honest review.
i read this book as part of an arc program. This is a great emotional story about finding love after a loss and being able to move on. Alexander is a very successful art dealer and one day while at a cafe, he meets Charlie, an artist when Charlie strikes up a conversation from the next table. Alex and Charlie have an instant attraction to one another, but there is a big age difference. Alex is about to turn 50 and Charlie is 27. Charlie is also struggling to be a success as an artist and is currently crashing with friends. When Alex and Charlie meet again at a gallery, Alex asks Charlie to go with him the next day to buy some art. They spend the day together and eventually Alex asks Charlie to go to his country home for the weekend. Charlie has a crush on Alex, but thinks he is out of his league and he could never be interested in the artist. Alex is attracted to Charlie, but he is conflicted because he always thought he would be alone after his partner died from cancer. Alex is also unsure about the age difference. They get along very well and they are very attracted to one another, but there is something holding Alex back. I really loved this story. I wanted to cry and then laugh. I loved how Alex really loved Charlie, but he was so conflicted about being happy. I think they were meant to meet and Alex was meant to find love again. I think they had amazing chemistry and the age difference didn't matter. Great one and i look forward to reading more of this series.
You never know who you are going to fall in love with. Our heart dictates who to love, it is out of our hands. When our main characters met, it was in an unexpected place under unexpected circumstances. Nothing in their relationship is conventional, serendipitous you might say. Alex is older, feels older while Charlie is younger than him, vibrant, full of life, but the attraction and the desire is very strong, and things just started happening for both of them that they seem to have no control of. Their story will take you on a journey that will give you all the feels of falling in love all over again. It is sweet, and lets us see how an older man navigates through his feelings and his apprehensions while being totally attracted to someone less than half his age. It tells us how someone so young totally knows what he wants in his life, but that sometimes you are in doubt because of what society might think and the current circumstances you are in. It tells us of how a person goes through grief and the lengths they go through in order not to feel the pain again; but it also tells us that sometimes we have to risk our heart in order to find the love meant for us. CONGRATULATIONS Ms. Joyce, for a story of love and second chances, your stories make me feel that risking our hearts in order to find our happily-ever-after is totally worth it!
I knew I’d like this book early on as Alexander’s character emerged through his narration. His outward quiet contentment with his life, but underlying, half-buried even from him, feeling of something missing was so well done. He feels like a kind, generous jigsaw puzzle missing an integral piece.
It took me longer to get a read on Charlie. I love him as an artist, and his relationship with his parents - well, mother - though we see little of it is well done. I felt like I could easily pick her out of a crowd! But him having no friends whilst actually living on a friend’s sofa felt weird. We only get a few texts from his mate Sean and it feels a bit more friendly but I’d love to know more.
Alex’s friends and brother, however, are a Class A trip and a half. So funny, and such s great dynamic. Can’t wait for the next book (Neil??!).
This was sweet and perfectly timed out, not too fast and unbelievable, not too slow and “just say you like him already!” frustrating. Just lovely.
I received this book as an ARC. The above is my honest review.
A great read from C.S. Joyce. We are introduced to two lovely characters but I completely fell in love with Charlie. As described by Alexander, he is full of light and wonderful to read. Two very different men come together and though their circumstances are vastly different, it's easy to read the connection between the two. There are great characters right alongside the MC's, though all from Alexander's world. They easily accept Charlie and it's Alexander who has to fight his own thoughts and ideas as to what is possible for the future. This is a lovely read, involving and at times emotional as they get to know each other. There are several great friendships that offer much needed support and guidance, along with acceptance to the newcomer in their lives. I really enjoyed this story and am looking forward to the next in this series. Definitely recommended. I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.
My heart is all kinds of happy after reading this book. If you want to enjoy a true romance without all the angst and crazy drama this is a must read for you. 💋
A middle aged art dealer has a serendipitous encounter with a twenty something artist in a small cafe in Dublin.
What makes this story so great is its simplicity. The couple does have a few bumps to work through with the older one, Alex, still having issues over the loss of his partner and the younger man, Charlie, being quite literally a "starving artist," along with recuperating from a fall he took from a cliff.
Even with their baggage to sort through, this charming couple make you fall in love with them while you watch them fall in love with each other. Such a sweet story. I loved it. 💕
I received a free copy of this book via LesCourt and am voluntarily leaving a review.💋
This is a delightful story with a great storyline and wonderful characters. The setting is beautiful and I love Charlie and Alex together. Alex does have a lot of angst about their age difference but Charlie is just happy to find someone that is so perfect for him. They have an instant connection but they take their time getting to know each other. They are also at very different places in their lives as Alex has a very successful established career and Charlie is struggling to support himself as an artist. They have to decide what they want and need from each other if they want their relationship to have a chance. The secondary characters are a lot of fun as well and I look forward to reading the next book in this entertaining series.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
This book was lovely! Everithing in it spoke to me: the age gap, the fact that there's an older character (as I am in my 40s it gets sometimes a bit frustreating to only get MCs in their 20s or early 30s), the job connection, everything! Charlie's spark and enthusiasm is refreshing and a breath of fresh air. I got sometimes frustrated at Alexander's unsureness, or reluctance to go all in and the therefore mixed signals he sent to Charlie, thogh I guess it's all to be expected given his past hurt. CS Joyce is a new to me author, thogh some of her books were already on my trl, and I can't wait to read more from her already (I am particularly looking forward to Neil's book!)
A sweet and enjoyable read that sees two very different but the same souls connect through a love of art, chemistry and chasing their dreams and finding that HEA.
Alex is older, wiser and stuck in that part of his life that he is unsure of what will complete his life. Until a gorgeous young man sits next to him in a cafe and something ignites in him that he hasn’t felt in a long time.
Charlie is a struggling artist. He’s quirky and cute, but he has no home, no real job and nothing to offer this beautiful man, so would he really have a chance at building his HEA with him???
Charlie - “Trust me. I'm like popping candy rolled in sherbet and dipped in fizzy pop. I'm beyond refreshing."
This is a sweet, slow burn, age gap story. It is such a treat for me, as an Irish woman to read an MM book set here and I particularly loved the descriptions of Georgian Dublin. Alexander is a wealthy art dealer who is reluctant to get involved with anyone, let alone a homeless artist over 20 years younger than him. However, there is something about the young man that gets completely under his skin. Charlie also feels the intense connection they have but gets very confused by the mixed messages that Alexander is sending. When we get Alexander's tragic back story his hesitation makes sense, but he just needs to realise that some things are worth taking a chance on.
A sweet May to December This is a May to December book set in Ireland. It is funny and sweet with characters that you could almost have as your friends. It was engaging from the start with Alex realising that work is all he does, but it is no longer filling the void left by the death of his partner, he finds himself being attracted to and intrigued by a young artist 20 years his junior, Charlie. Charlie is so optimistic full of life despite what is thrown at him. This book does come with some angst, as Alex struggles with the age gap and his insecurities which was totally believable and understandable, the secondary characters are well rounded, I have high hopes for more from this series.
I love the writing in this book, the words are beautiful and it reflects the characters of both Alex & Charlie.
From the beginning it’s obvious these two characters are meant to be together, the chemistry and anticipation is brilliant I found myself feeling all the emotions they did and even screamed at the characters a few times 😂
I loved the setting of the book and the details that are included to show the reader the gorgeousness of their surroundings.
There is very little angst and a truly beautiful love story - can’t wait for more in the series 😍
This is an unashamed old fashioned love story, barely any angst but a Lot of FEELS. There were the tear jerker moments. Also some laugh out loud moments too, especially the kamikaze chicken. I know some May/September couples and some 20+ years on are still very happy. I could understand Alex’s dilemma but admired Charlie’s optimism. The secondary characters were well written, the backdrop of one of my favourite places, Ireland, made this a hugely enjoyable ( and quick) read. I’m so looking forward to following this series
This sweet age gap romance had just the right amount of angst to tug the heartstrings without overwhelming the the feel good vibes of the story. The age gap verges on May to December (my feeling on this is 25 to 30 years, YMMV) at 22 years but there is more than just the age gap to concern these guys. Social standing, money, homelessness, and the ghost (not literally) of a dead lover all stand in the way of their HEA. This is the first book I've read by this author but I'll definitely read more.
The Heart Dealer was sweet, sensitive and very romantic in an unorthodox way. Alex has been passing through life not really living after the death of his husband from cancer. When an young man makes his acquaintance his life becomes fuller and brighter. Charles is a simi homeless artist, living on friends couches and barely getting by but he still keeps a sunny disposition. From the beginning they click and what ensues is a story that grabs you and holds onto your heart until the end.
This book, although an insta love for the May/December couple, was a slow burn to get there. I would call this book romantic. It was so sweet and very low angst. The couple has to get past the age difference and realize the depth of their feelings in a short time period is okay. Love is love and this couple, is too sweet. I love that Charlie is so genuine. And Alex is so supportive. If you are looking for just a happy book, this one is for you.
This was a really sweet story. Alex is an older man, 50. He's an art dealer. He's been on his own for a while. He meets Charlie, 27. A struggling artist, he feels like he has nothing of value to offer a man like Alex, worldly and sophisticated. Together, they have to decide if they are brave enough to take a chance on love. I completely fell in love with the description of the Irish countryside. I felt as if I were living and breathing the beauty of the small, warm cottages and farm life.
Alex and Charlie meet by chance. Their attraction begins.
Alex is older and not ready to be in a relationship with a man almost half his age. He is hesitant to open his heart.
Charlie is sweet and vibrant. He is just starting out. He's an artist who is having trouble making ends meet. A bright moment in his life was meeting Alex.
I enjoy a slow burn romance and the realization that they are meant to be together. Both were sweet characters.
I really enjoyed this book. A nice story, without much drama and with lovely characters. We follow Alex and Charles from strangers to lovers, and all in between. I just wish the story was a little longer, there was a lot to be discussed in their relashionship... specially with the way it developed. Looking foward for the next book ❤
I really enjoyed this May/December love story. Charlie and Alex are perfect together. Each giving the other what they didn't even know they needed. This story is rich with wonderful secondary characters that add so much to the journey. I found this to be a sweet, quirky love story with a wonderful HEA!
KU. May/December. 3.5 rounded to 4. Sweet, cozy, fairly low angst story. Alex & Charlie were adorable, but I do wish we’d come to *know* them a little better. Especially Charlie. They had 6 weeks together and it only felt like small glimpses into either of their lives/history was shared and that was almost all Alex’s.
I’m hoping they’ll show up in other stories in the series though.
